1 Newsletter No. 30 - Term 3 Week 10 21 September 2017 END OF TERM NEWS We have reached the end of a very busy term but what an exciting night we had on Tuesday night at our Performance Showcase. What wonderful and talented performers we have in our student community! We certainly enjoyed the Strings Group, which are expertly trained by the lovely Holly, as our opening performance. The evening just flowed after that with performances by our Choir, 3/4 Dancers, Kalinda Band, Drama Group, Wonnies Band and Highland Dancing. The acts were varied and kept us entertained all night. In fact, we were so busy and entertained, that we never took any photos if you have any, please share them with us. Along with the performances, there is a great deal of work behind the scenes. Paul T and Cheryl H W have put in tremendous amounts of hours putting the Showcase together. Our staff who readily give their energies to the many activities around the school. Many parents also support the activities for our children and we could not do without their support. I would like to thank our wonderful Canteen Manager, Justine for opening the Kitchen in the stadium las night for the yummy treats to ward off the hunger pains if you had not had dinner. She also allowed students to order an item for their dinner. Thank you Justine and your team. A terrific innovation for the event. All had a great night. CRT TEACHERS As with most businesses, we have many staff away from work with the flu, and this has put pressure on the availability of Casual Relief Teachers. Your child may have a few different. WORKS OVER THIS HOLIDAY PERIOD During these holidays there will be some work on the school grounds. This will involve fencing and work around the Prep playground. Please DO NOT use the playground if and when the workman are around. Steve Harvey will keep you updated on Compass via Newsfeeds. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

LEVEL 4 INCURSION

Positive behaviour! Self-respect! Empathy! Just some of the topics covered in yesterday’s performance by Brainstorm Productions. The student wellbeing performance ‘The Magic Words’ was presented to our Grade 5/6 students. ‘The Magic Words’ is a live educational theatre show of comic adventures, which helped students discover the true meaning of using magic words – “sorry”, “thank you”, “please”, “excuse me” - and come to understand that having good values and showing respect is an important and essential part of growing up. Students learned the value of using their ‘magic words’ online and how to safely share information about themselves and others in an increasingly digital world. ‘The Magic Words’ charmed and captivated students while revealing the magic and power of kind and gentle words.

SUNSMART TERM Just a reminder that Term 4 is a Sunsmart Term. Please ensure your child has a labelled hat to wear whilst outside during Term 4. Kalinda uniforms can be purchased from RHS Sports in Ringwood. Details for RHS Sports are on our website.

MATHS DAY

Our first Sports Maths Day was a huge success and the buzz around Kalinda Primary School was certainly infectious. The morning was spent investigating Number problems using the numbers on our outfits. We also participated in a whole school challenge to try and estimate the total of all numbers in the school. Classes identified important information for solving a problem and then used a range of strategies to make a reasonable estimate. Congratulations to Darcy and Gabe who won the Foundation competition, and to our total of FIVE winners who were the closest to estimate our whole school total. This year our total was 10,997…. I wonder what next year’s will be? After recess classes held Measurement activities – from how far we can jump, reach and throw to how many times we can bounce/kick/skip in a minute. Some classes even investigated circumference and diameter of various sports balls! After lunch it was time for Chance and Data and there were lots of games and challenges happening around the school. It was a really fantastic day and so thrilling to see students (and teachers!) really challenging themselves and building mathematical persistence and creativity. Well done everyone!

LITERACY NEWS At Kalinda Primary School our approach to writing is not just about teaching genres, we teach the characteristics of writing and aim to establish a clear vision of what good writing looks like. The 6+1 Trait Writing Model of Instruction along with daily Writer’s Workshop sessions provides a common language for teachers and students to communicate about the characteristics of writing and establishes a clear vision of what good writing looks like. The 6+1 Traits

Ideas, the heart of the message;

Organisation, the internal structure of the piece;

Voice, the personal tone and flavour of the author’s message;

Word Choice, the vocabulary a writer chooses to convey meaning;

Sentence Fluency, the rhythm and flow of the language;

Conventions, the mechanical correctness;

Presentation, how the writing actually looks on the page. The 6+1 Traits are based on the following tenants for teaching writing:

Students learn by reading aloud and discussing samples of writing

Students learn from seeing writing modelled

Sharing writing is important

Revising our own and the work of others has great instructional benefit

Writing frequently is important The Writer’s Workshop The Writer’s Workshop is a teaching method based on the idea that students learn to write best when they write frequently, for extended lengths of time, on topics of their own choosing. Instead of spending the majority of class time on spelling tests, grammar worksheets, handwriting practice, and other isolated sub-skills of writing, Writer’s Workshop is designed to emphasize the act of writing itself—students spend most of their time putting pencil to paper, not just learning about it. Over time, students learn to choose their own topics and to manage their own development as they work through a wide variety of writing projects in a sustained and self-directed way. In Writer’s Workshop classrooms, full class lessons are short and tightly focused. As in professional writing workshops, emphasis is placed on sharing work with the class, on peer conferencing and editing, and on the collection of a wide variety of work in a Writer’s Notebook. Teachers can write with their students and share their own work as well. The workshop setting encourages students to think of themselves as writers, and to take their writing seriously. I was so excited yesterday when I sat in on a part of a Grade 5/6 Writer’s Workshop session, and listened to the following pieces of writing being shared, they really are evidence of how effective our Writer’s Workshop sessions are:

The fresh breeze wraps around your body as you fall asleep in your sleeping bag. Flames from the fire just reach your tent with the faint showering of warmth. Awakening to ice cold mornings, with shivers down your spine. All your friends around you keeping that same safe vibe as though you’re at home. Using the tomahawk you chop through thick logs to create firewood. Everyone chips in their time to help out, making sure every scout is feed. Once you hit the car seat in a big slump, you can finally relax, feeling all the rough road making the wheels send a chilled vibration through the car. The motion and the warmth makes you fall into a quiet slumber. Molly L 5/6

The Holidays A forest full of gum and acorn trees looked over me. I could hear the faint whistle of Puffing Billy in the distance. Strong metal chains were tightly tied between trees. Kids and adults flew through the air with huge smiles on their faces. Laughter echoed through the giant hills. Aiden.S 5/6

FOUNDATION NEWS This week in Foundation, the children were given the challenge to build a tower from newspaper and masking tape. The tower had to be free-standing and at least as tall as the tallest team member. The intention of the challenge was to develop the Foundation students' problem-solving and collaborative skills, which is an ever-increasing focus within the Australian Curriculum at all levels. All the students were highly engaged in their challenge and worked hard to use their cooperative skills. There were many creative designs, with students rolling, twisting, scrunching, folding and stacking their newspaper to create an array of unique towers. The winners of the challenge were Tate, Joshua and Ollie. Well done boys!!

THE GREAT BIG 1/2 PUBLISHING PARTY PLEASE NOTE NEW TIME The Grade 1/2s have been learning lots of new skills in Writer’s Workshop all year, and this term they are publishing their very own book! In acknowledgement of their efforts, they will be hosting The Grade 1/2 Publishing Party on Thursday, 21st September at 2:45pm and we hope to see as many families along as possible to celebrate the students’ achievements and growth in Writing. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Mel Tattersall Grade 1/2 Teacher

LEVEL 3 NEWS

Today, the Level 3 and 4 students held their CBL Expo. After visiting the Zoo earlier in the Term, the students learned that the Corroboree Frog, the Lord Howe Stick Insect, the Australian Fur Seal, the Helmeted Honey-Eater, the Tasmanian Devil, and the Philippine Crocodile, are all animals that range from vulnerable, to critically endangered. The challenge was to “tell their story” in a way that raised awareness of their situation. Each student had a ‘Passport’ where they received a stamp once they had answered questions on each of the animals, correctly. This encouraged peer teaching and learning. Well done to everyone involved, it was a wonderful celebration of your work and understandings!
