PRESIDENT’S PAR
With our CAMC year approaching its close, we can look back at
another successful year and forward to 2019.
I would like to thank all Club Committee Members for their great
support of the CAMC this last year - it
certainly makes the job of President much easier. Special thanks
are due to John and Joan Collins, Lynn and
Barry Gavin, Paul Ballard, Alan Thompson (and his deputies),
John Simpfendorfer and John Milnes for their
generous contributions to the administration and promotion of
our Club.
The friendship and camaraderie shown by all members is obvious,
no more so than when one of us suffers a
problem on an outing - an almost inevitable event for those of
us driving older vehicles. Such was the case on
our recent Gundagai Run when several of our more knowledgeable
gentlemen came to the aid of Tim when
his Triumph Spitfire experienced an electrical component
failure. Everyone’s instinct is always to stop and
assist, which is neither practical nor safe (especially with 18
cars on the run), so most of us pressed-on in the
knowledge that if Tim, Malcolm, Alan and Ken could not fix the
problem, it was extremely unlikely that we
could. Alan brought the ladies on to Gundagai, and Malcolm and
Ken went back for a trailer and delivered
Tim and his car home.
A small anecdote from the Gundagai Run. While leaving the town,
I noticed a young couple ‘dressed to the
nines’, frantically tapping on their mobile phones. They were
clearly going to Gundagai Snake Gully Races
(hay burners not motor), so I turned the Armstrong Siddeley
around and offered them a lift. Both were
delighted to arrive in style, and alight in front of the entry
gate ! They took video and pictures, but I didn’t.
The CAMC Calendar really does provide ‘something for everyone’
at most events during the year, whether
they be public events, our own special days, inter-club outings,
weekends away, weekday runs or coffee
mornings. This year I was able to attend more weekday runs,
which I found very enjoyable.
Thank you to all members for supporting me as President over the
last two years. I will not be standing for
any Committee positions for the 2019 year but look forward to
enjoying as many CAMC events as I can.
For now, safe and happy motoring to all, and best wishes for the
festive season and 2019.

2018. Meeting was opened at 8.00 p.m. by President Hugh
McMinn.

Showground Users Committee Delegates’ Report: John
Simpfendorfer attended the October Meeting. The next
Meeting is Wednesday 21 November.
SWAP MEET REPORT: Barry said he handed out
flyers for our Swap Meet at the Junee Swap Meet yesterday.
And he will get more flyers printed. . . . . .( so we can
all give a hand at distributing them. )
PLATES REGISTRAR’S REPORT: Registration Inspection
Day is Sunday 2 December Pay $30 Membership Fee for 2019 when
your car is inspected. John Collins added that at the same time you
could book for the Christmas Party Lunch (at Stockinbingal Bowling
Club) at a cost of $30 each. WEBMASTER’S REPORT: In John Milnes’
absence, Paul said the Website is working well. Additional
information about Coming Events can be on the Website. Very useful.
EVENTS CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT:
Don’t forget that our Christmas Party will be Lunch at
Stockinbingal Bowling Club - Sunday 9 December - @ $30 per head. We
need you to pay at December Meeting or at Registration Inspection
Day - Sunday 2 December --at Cootamundra TAFE Workshop. Paul
ascertained support for Saturday morning coffee runs. See Coming
Events in Coota Hoota. Mal Chaplain advised of an - unfortunate -
Events clash. Friday 17 May -- Some Members of our club intend to
attend the Bush Council Rally at Griffith, while other Members
intend to attend the Historic Races at Winton. Paul apologised that
he can’t attend the next Meeting, so refer to the Coming Events in
Coota Hoota. And he can’t be Events Co-ordinator next year. A fresh
nomination is needed . . . .
CLUB CAPTAIN’s REPORT: John Simpfendorfer advised that there is
a Ulysses Christmas Toy Run for motorbikes on Saturday 8 December –
10.30 a.m. from Family Hotel. Even worth spectating. He awarded
trophies: Mug of the Club to Tim O’Keeffe for aiding Mal’s V12
Jaguar to get a heart transplant. The Wheel to Ken Harrison who has
put an antique trailer onto Club Plates. And the Bugger-Up to Mal
Chaplin because his Jaguar suffered a heart attack..

GENERAL BUSINESS Ken Harrison reported on Classic Yass – 400
vehicles on
display. John Simp. won a prize for his 1924 DOUGLAS.
Look:
Mal Chaplin reported on the Weekend Away to see the
sights of Millthorpe, especially a Gardens Ramble.
Ken Harrison reported he would like to take his home-made
Monza Racer to Historic Winton next May.
Paul Ballard reported it takes 4 hours to exchange a battery
into a 1985 Citroen. (The headlight has to be removed?)
Hugh Closed the Meeting at 8.45 pm. reminding members
to get the Nominations for next year’s Office Bearers in to
the
Secretary. All positions are now vacant.
Membership Fees for 2019 are best paid
on Sunday 2 December at Registration
Inspection Day.
PAST EVENTS 2
nd - 3
rd November: The Milthorpe Gardens Ramble proved to be a very
pleasant weekend.
Tretheweys, O’Keeffes, McCarthys, Chaplins, and Ballards
travelled via Boorowa, Crookwell, Binda,
Blayney to visit many Gardens in and around Milthorpe.
After a visit to the Crookwell sock factory, a very interesting
experience, we headed north. The road is in
good condition, windy, hilly and picturesque. We crossed the
Abercrombie River via the old wooden
bridge. After an enjoyable drive to Blayney, we experienced a
violent thunderstorm during dinner at
the Chinese restaurant.
Next morning - a short drive to Milthorpe, a very pretty
village, had 6 open Gardens to visit, all quite
different to each other.
The village had many visitors, including some from other car
clubs.
Lunch was an enjoyable experience on the old Railway Station
platform.
Outside the village were 6 other gardens from 2 to 20 acres in
size ! which we explored into the following
day. We admired the use of the local Blue Stone in the older
homes and in garden rockeries.
Milthorpe Garden Ramble next year will feature a new selection
of gardens - a weekend well worth
revisiting.

THE GREAT AMERICAN TRIP In late September and early October,
Jill and I together with son Dean and his wife Fiona left Australia
for a motoring
trip around the USA.
Direct flight with Qantas to Los Angeles (14 hours) pick up our
vehicle (Hyundai Santa Fe), and after a look around LA
and a nights rest, head north to San Francisco. Our plan was to,
as far as possible, to keep off major freeways and stop in
smaller towns.
In San Francisco we rode the Cable Tram (keeping an eye out for
Steve McQueen in that green Mustang), and drove
over the Golden Gate Bridge to start heading east.
We drove through and stayed at many interesting places, but
these are the highlights.
Bonneville Salt Flats where we were lucky enough to be there
when speed trials were being held. Mount Rushmore
where the rock sculpture of American Presidents is truly
spectacular. Then on to Iowa to visit the “American Pickers”
shop on the banks of the Mississippi River.
I guess that it is no surprise that the next major interest was
at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend Indiana where I
left details of my ’60 Lark Convertible, and have now received
the Production Order details – very interesting!
We then proceeded on into Canada, and Hamilton, where Fiona has
a relative (distant cousin) where we stayed for 3
nights.
Back into the USA and heading south to New York where we just
had a drive through visit. Then onto Washington
which was also drive through, but with a couple of hours stop to
see the main sights. (Did not go to the White House
‘cause Donald wasn’t home!). Next stop was Maggie Valley and the
“Wheels Through Time” museum. This had
mostly motorcycles but some cars and was very well laid out.
Next city was Memphis where we saw Elvis’ home of Gracelands.
Then on to Nashville – Johnny Cash museum and
American Pickers second shop. From Nashville we were starting to
head west, through sparsely populated areas with a
mixture of open scrub land and craggy hills.
It was at this time we had the opportunity to see a lot of the
US Rail system. Most trains had 3 or 4 locos pulling 160+
wagons double stacked with containers and with a pusher loco on
the back. They know how to move their freight, but
there were still many large trucks on the highways.
Next visit was Tombstone – “Gunfight at OK Corral” etc.
Interesting place but very commercial. As Tombstone is close
to the Mexican border, we had to pass through 3 random
immigration checks. Thank goodness none of us looked
Mexican, so we were allowed straight through.
We next headed north west, passing Phoenix, towards Las Vegas
via the Hoover Dam. The Dam is an amazing structure,
but it is now overshadowed by the spectacular road bridge which
has been built across the canyon adjacent to the Dam.
When the Yanks build something, they build big!
Then on to Las Vegas for 2 nights among the glitz and glitter
seeing many people spend and, no doubt, lose their money.
Heading west again to have one last night before our flight
home. At our motel we had a taste of what life in America
can really be like – many police on foot and in cars on patrol
plus low flying helicopters with spotlights shining down.
We didn’t know what was going on, but our motel room door, was
well secured!
Returned our hire car which had taken us through 22 states,
(twice in two of those states) for a total of 8000 miles
(approx.12500 km). Fuel was cheap – from $2.68 to $4.00 per
gallon (do your sums to compare with us).
The Hyundai was not the most powerful thing, but averaged about
30 mpg and did a good job carrying the 4 of us and
our luggage in comfort.
Our flight home left LA at 10.30 on Sunday night, and landed in
Sydney at 7.30 on Tuesday morning. What happened
to Monday?

The Vintage Motor Cycle Club’s 63rd Annual Rally On Friday 9
th Sept, 2018, Craig Golden and myself loaded up our bikes and
camping gear to attend the V.M.C.C. Rally that this
year was again held at the Cowra Caravan/Camping Park. This is a
great facility to hold it with good easy access to the Rally
routes
out of town.
Friday afternoon was a Short Ride to Canowindra and return.
Start time on Saturday was 10.30 a.m. for a 148 km (Long Ride)
or 108 km (Short Ride) to Goologong for Lunch. Then return to
Cowra with Dinner at the Bowling Club. Approximately 150 bikes
were on this run. We were well directed by local riders from
Cowra.
Excellent variations of Veteran, Vintage and Classic pre-1948
bikes were to be seen: B.S.A., DOUGLAS, TRIUMPH, RUDGE,
WOLSELEY, PEUGEOT, INDIAN, HARLEY DAVIDSON, to name a few.
Riders came from the Sydney area, Central Coast, Muswellbrook,
Parkes, Orange, Queensland, and all places in between.
This was another great, well-run Rally. Congratulations to all
involved including the local marshals and back-up drivers.
The 64th
Rally will be held in the Morphet, Muswellbrook area next year
.
I was lucky enough to scrounge a Gas Tail-Light for the Douglas.
