Terry Stafford and His Lime Rock Articles Way back in 1992, Terry Stafford of theLong Island Corvair Association wrote a series of six articles about preparing Corvairsfor the Northeast Corvair Council (NECC) time trials at Lime Rock.

Although Corvair Days at Lime Rock are just a memory, Terry's articles are still rele-vant today because they provide good advice for putting Corvairs in tip-top mechanicalcondition. Perhaps you’d like to drive with NECC this year at, say, New York SafetyTrack or New Jersey Motorsports Park.

SO YOU WANT TO DRIVE AT LIME ROCK?PART 1 OF A 6 PART SERIES, by Terry Stafford

Getting ready to drive your Corvair to the 2015 CORSA Convention in Knoxville? It may be time to start shopping forthose odds and ends that make your Corvair go. You should pick up a used Corvair shop manual, too. Grimy is OK!

gas cap (per original), new brake pedalcover, shocks, etc. Second would beparts for any repair you intend to makebefore August, i.e., new plug wires,carb rebuild and tune-up kits, front endparts, etc. Third and only third are up-grades to improve performance, i.e., hiperformance tires, engine upgrades,quick steering arms, etc. Fourth isthings to make you look better (for thecrowd around the winner's circle), i.e.new emblems, seat covers, quarterpanel trim, white scarf, nice sunglasses,CORSA T-shirt, etc.

Why February? Now you may havewanted to ask, “why have Lime Rockon your mind in February?” You willnot find these parts this cheap again,and besides, it's nice to have twenty tothirty knowledgeable consultants withyou when you are shopping.

A Word About Safety Belts. Stock lapbelts may be good enough for autocrossand drag racing, but you'll need ashoulder harness to drive on a roadcourse like Lime Rock. All roadcourses now require a minimum of ashoulder belt with your lap belt, calleda “3 point belt”, because there are 3points where it is bolted to the car. Goto the web site at www.neccmotorsports.com to find details,and several suggested options.

This will require modifications to astock Corvair, but provides additionalsafety for street use too. Or you caninstall a high back racing seat just forthe day. If the seat back is higher thanyour shoulders you can buy a “4 pointracing harness” that can be mounted tothe stock front and rear seat belt bolts.And this kind of racing seat with 4point belt keeps you straight up andright where you want to be in all cor-nering and braking circumstances.

If you have to add rear seat belt mount-ing bolts because your car never hadrear belts, these are under your rearseat. They will never show once theracing seat is removed and regular beltsreinstalled.

More to Come. Next month, we willstart going over the car. This serieswill cover car inspection and safetyitems, touch on classification regula-tions (what you can change and what itwill mean), performance upgrades, reg-istration information, what will be ex-pected of you at the track, what youshould expect on the track, and any-thing else you ask me to cover.

Now, for your homework assignment:Clean anything you can on or off thecar, and watch the Daytona 500!

I've never written a series of articleslike this before so first I'll lay out a planfor preparing for Lime Rock. But be-fore we can start I have to ask you topick a car. Yes, you have to bring yourown car or plan now to borrow one. Bychoosing the car now you can put allyour effort in one direction and get fur-ther along.

And if you “tell the car” about LimeRock, that car will want to be taken onthe track and will bring you to the racetrack in August come ____ or high wa-ter! (That thought is not widely be-lieved but I know it to be true.) Myonly caution to you is that I was"normal" before I ever drove at LimeRock.

$100 per Month Plan. Now for theplan: Let's call it the $100 per monthplan. (Or $50, or $25, or $10.) Thismonth, bring your $100 to the NJACESmall Parts Auction. That's right, bringLime Rock money. It's easier to spendbecause it's not yours, it's Lime Rock's.And bring a list of things that you coulduse. (Also bring things that you don'tneed that you can sell, to raise moneyand help with this whole effort.)

Making a List. Here are some ideas foryou list: First is safety and mechanicalneeds, i.e., seat belts, mirrors, vented

Driving a convertible ‘Vair on the track? You’ll need a roll bar like this one.

buy a new Otto fan belt or Clark's Ulti-mate fan belt or equivalent. (I don'tknow of an equivalent.) Buy it nowand install it now. The good used beltyou remove will make a perfect spare.The Otto and Clark's belts are narrowerand ride deeper in the pulleys and don'tride up at high speeds. By putting it onnow, it will break in (and stretch a lit-tle) and hold the final adjustment betterthis summer. Contrary to what youmay have heard, Corvairs can be toughon belts....

Hard-Harder Test. This weekend, goout to your Corvair and do the LimeRock brake test, a.k.a. the "hard-harder" brake test. This test will beperformed during tech inspection at thetrack, but you want to do it now too.Sit behind the wheel and step on thebrake pedal very hard. Hold it and pullthe steering wheel toward you and pusheven harder on the brakes, as hard asyou can. If the pedal suddenly goessoft under your foot, then you need todo some brake line repair. Just lookunder the car for the puddle. Betternow than at trackside. (But do not dothis test in your driveway/garage if you

can’t lift the car and change the steelbrake line over the top of the gas tank.Instead, take the car to your mechanicand do the test there this month.)

First Walk-Around Inspection. Nowlet's look further ahead with a brief in-spection. Tires on the right side of thecar must be the same size as the tires onthe left side of the car. They must havelegal tread depth (on all sides), theremust be no missing studs on any wheel.The battery hold-down must be secure.The throttle return spring must not beready to break. Un-hook both ends andlook for a warn groove where it hasengaged over and over. The enginemounts must not be sagging so the en-gine should sit level. And the brakelights must work. Test the shock ab-sorbers by putting both hands on a frontfender, above the headlights. Pushdown with all your weight, and thenrelease quickly. The car should comeup and then settle down all in one mo-tion. If it bounces more than once be-fore settling down, shop for shocks. Dothe same all around the car. Sometimesyou might only need fronts or rears.

Driving on a Road Course Race Track.What's it like to drive on the LimeRock track? Well you know your fa-vorite exit ramp close to your house,the one that you know how to take veryfast? When it's late and you're in ahurry and no one is on the road, youknow just when and how much to turnthe wheel and just when to tap thebrakes, and it feels great to go thru thatturn perfectly.

At the race track, we will take away thetraffic light or stop sign at the end ofthe exit ramp. So you re-acceleratesmoothly onto the next straight andstring 10 to 15 of those turns together.That's an even greater feeling. Now it'sgoing to take some time, and maybe afew trips to any track, to learn everyturn on that track like you know yourfavorite exit ramp. But that challengeis what makes it so much fun.

Begin to Invest! Remember our $100-per-month plan? This month's "plan"dollars are going to be spent differentlyby everyone.

To run on any road course race track,your Corvair will need to be equippedwith shoulder belts. If you don’t havethem, you’ll need to invest some ofyour money there. Necessary parts andinstallation tips have been posted on theNECC website, Corvair Center Forum,the Corvair Society of America Face-book page, and other Corvair blogs.

Convertible owners, you are going tohave to put some money toward a rollbar, which is mandatory for Lime Rock(and all other road courses. Ed.) It willconform to SCCA regulations, extend2” higher than the driver's helmet, havepadding, and, get this, it will be com-pletely removable if you want it to be.Read details on www.neccmotorsports.com

lock since we did not experience thatsymptom. (Look for the one remainingclothes pin in the picture).

This same person repaired the existinggas line from the tank to the engine bayby running a rubber hose the entirelength. The rubber line was dry-rottedand cracked. The repair of the gas lineswas a relatively easy fix becauseClark’s Corvair Parts has pre-bent linesthat are a good fit.

While working in the engine area, I de-cided to correct the PCV piping sincethere was oil all over the engine. Aquick look in the manual and I foundthe problem. The engine was a ‘1965’95 HP and the tubing and hoses wererun like it was a ‘1961’ 80 HP engine.The fix for this was to install a hoseconnection in one of the air cleanersand reverse the original setup so that itwould work properly. Problemsolved – no oil on the engine now!You can see in the pictures the differ-ence between the engine when westarted working on it and how it lookedwhen completed.

Another problem found in the engine

area was the wiring. Several majorwires had signs of an electrical short.(Burnt insulation and frayed wires). Italmost looked like it caught fire. Mostof the bad wires had been repaired withwire nuts or held together with electri-cal tape and (again) clothes pins. Manyother minor wires where damaged, bro-ken or disconnected for some reason. Isay minor wires but in fact I shouldconsider them major because only onetail light was working and the licenseplate lights did not work either.

I purchased a new harness and repairedall of the wiring that was damaged. Ialso corrected the grounding system atthe battery and now all of the lightswork great including the dash lightsthat did not work. I have since installedLED’s in the taillights. Oh, I almostforgot; the turn-signals didn’t work ei-ther. I installed a wire coat hanger toactivate the turn signal mechanism.Pull up for right and push down for left.The Corvair Ranch supplied new partsand the turn signals work like new now.

I installed a new stereo/cassette/radio,four speakers and antenna so that thetruck would run better (LOL).

Donna purchased her 1961 Rampsideon February 18, 2006 in South Carolinaand we have been enjoying it eversince.

The day after we got home with theRampside; Donna and I thought aboutwhat we should do first to have thetruck run and stop safely. We felt thatit might have to sit for a couple ofweeks (or months) until I completed my66 Corsa Convertible project. Asthings normally go, it was going to takeme a lot longer than a couple of monthsto complete the Corsa, so Donna and Idecided to tackle the items that wererequired so that we could use the truckas soon as possible.

When we picked-up the Rampside inSC it would not start (long story) andwe had to pull it onto the trailer with acome-along. So the first thing we didwhen we got it home was to install anew starter. It now started but ranpoorly.

The second obvious item that neededrepair was the muffler. We knew it wasbad since it was falling off and had tobe held up with a bungee cord. I defi-nitely dislike the sound that a Corvairengine makes without a muffler (unlessit has headers like a race car) so thesecond thing that we completed was theaddition of dual exhaust. It has a verynice sound with the duals in place.

The next important thing to repair wasthe gas lines from the tank to the enginebay to the carburetors. The previousowner had replaced the fuel pump andin the process of disconnecting the fuellines made them look like twisted dishrags. The existing gas line repairs con-sisted of a small piece of rubber hose -held in place with clamps and a clothes-pin. I kid you not; there were clothes-pins at several different locations on thefuel lines at the repairs. I do not be-lieve that it was done to prevent vapor

We cleaned up the interior and the bed tosee how much damage there was - not badat all. Still looks good today consideringthat this is our Pick-up Truck and is usedas such.

The next project was the most difficultproject at the time - the brakes. I replacedthe master cylinder with a dual set-up, allnew brake lines from front to back (steeltubing and flex lines), wheel cylinders,brake springs and brake shoes. Stops goodnow!

We bought new tires and put on a set ofwire wheel covers that came with thetruck.

When we filled the gas tank we found thatgas was dripping on the ground. Therewere several holes in the tank fill and ventlines plus holes in the top of gas tank. Allitems pertaining to the fuel system havebeen replaced (including the gas tank).

Since the engine had not run for years Ichanged the plugs, installed an electronicignition and new plug wires.

After several weekends of intense work,we took the Rampside out for the day todo some antiquing and it ran and stoppedgreat. We were literally out for hours inthe truck stopping at many antique shopsin the area and we didn’t have even a hintof a problem.

Since that time we have improved manyother items on the truck such as a completerebuild of the front and rear suspensions,hi-stall speed torque converter, rear slidingwindow, all new door & window seals/gaskets, mirrors, tachometer, alternator,NOS speedometer & cable, seat belts &shoulder harnesses, lots of detailing(polished metal) and a 140 HP engine. Atthis time the 140 HP engine is disassem-bled getting head work completed.

As I mentioned above the Rampside isused as our Pick-up truck. We haul furni-ture, appliances, mulch (1,200 LBS), pel-lets (1,000 LBS) and everything else thatis required for work around the house.What a great truck!

items, only. Typically we have up-wards of 200 lots to get through, so weare not able to deal with items outsideof this parameter.

Also, we ask that you not bring morethan one of the same item to sell. It isdifficult to sell, in an auction setting,multiples of the same thing. You can,however, sell multiple items in a "lot."You could offer, say, one lot of six oilfilters, instead of six individual oil fil-ters.

Remember that only quality items selleasily. Greasy, rusty, bent and brokenpieces have limited appeal.

The club will deduct a 10% commis-sion on all sales. You may also donateitems for the full benefit of the club.

Did we mention that lunch is includedat no charge? Again, the doors open at9:00 AM for setup, on Saturday, Febru-ary 21, rain, snow, or shine!

NECC PERFORMANCEEVENTS FOR 2015

The Northeast Corvair Council("NECC") announces an excitingschedule of performance-orientedevents for 2015, encompassing threetrack days, two drag races, and oneautocross.

It all begins on Saturday, June 6, at theNew York Safety Track located inHarpers field, New York. This trackday will feature grouped practice ses-sions, driver training and individualtimed laps.

The fun then moves to Tennessee as theNECC in conjunction with the V-8Registry presents drag racing on Tues-day, June 23, just before the start of the2015 CORSA International Conven-tion. The action will take place at theKnoxville Dragway, just 17 miles fromthe convention host hotel.

The month of July sees the fourth Cor-vair Olympics in the Indianapolis area.

This not-to-be-missed spectacular be-gins with a track day at Putnam ParkRoad course on Thursday, July 23 , fol-lowed the next day by drag racing atthe famous Muncie Dragway. On Sat-urday, July 25, the Olympics concludewith the always popular autocross.

Rounding out this exciting summer ofCorvair performance is a return to theNew Jersey Motorsports Park's Thun-derbolt road course on August 10,where we'll again be conducting prac-tice sessions and individual timed laps.

JANUARY LVCCMEETING NOTES

After years and years of doing businesswith us, PNC Bank decided to chargeLVCC for depositing our money withthem! That’ right– they decided tocharge us a service fee of $14 a month.So Treasurer Dick Weidner did the pru-dent thing. He withdrew our money andclosed down the account. The accountwas opened in 1977 when clubs likeLVCC did not need a tax identificationnumber. The account has survived allthese years without a tax identificationnumber, but it will be necessary to ac-quire one to open a new account. Thiswas a topic of discussion during ourJanuary meeting.

Various suggestions were submitted bythe members. For example, RichGreen, maintains the Philadelphia Cor-vair Association checking account un-der his own tax identification number.No decision was made how to proceed,but members agreed to think about asolution.

NJACE SMALL PARTSAUCTION - 2015

The New Jersey Association of CorvairEnthusiasts (NJACE) will be having itsannual indoor Corvair Parts Auction onSaturday, February 21 at Ashley's AutoBody. All interested persons are invitedto attend. There is no admission chargeand lunch is included! Ashley's addressis 274 Hillside Avenue, Flanders, NewJersey.

At this event, new and used Corvairparts and accessories are sold at auction,with a 10% commission of the sale pricegoing to the club treasury. You maybring parts to sell, you may buy, or youmay do both, or you may just come toenjoy the fun.

Here is what you need to know to fullyenjoy the day:

First, plan on making a day of it. Due tothe nature of how the auction operates, itis not possible to process any buyers orsellers until the auction is completed.Doors open at 9:00 AM for set-up, webegin the bidding at 10:30 AM, take apizza break at 12:30, resume the biddingat 1:00 PM, and finish up typicallyaround 2:30 PM. Only at that time canwe tally the sales, collect from the buy-ers, and pay the sellers.

Second, plan on getting there early.We'll open the doors at 9:00 AM, to al-low time to tag and display any partsyou are selling, and to allow you to pe-ruse the parts being offered. If you'reselling, you will need to fill out a LotCard for each part or group of parts be-ing sold as one, so please allow suffi-cient time to do this before the start ofbidding. The lot card form is includedas part of this newsletter, so you canprint what you need and fill them out inadvance. But you can also get blank lotcards that day. If you are buying - oreven if you think you are not buying -you will be issued a Bidder Number bywhich the auction desk will track allpurchases.

Scott Oberholtzer related problems withhis Corvair. It has developed a miss andis making a tapping noise. Attendeessurmised that a lack of ZDDP in the en-gine oil may have contributed to thecondition.

Bob Weidman also talked about his Cor-vair. During the past month or so, theelectrical charging system began to fail.Bob used a multi-meter to identify thecause of the problem. It turned out to bea faulty connecter at his voltage regula-tor. This turned out to be an easy repair.

Dennis Stamm stated he has sold the1967 Corvair 500 he was advertising inthe last edition of The Fifth Wheel. Ithas found a new home in StroudsburgPA.

Dick Weidner brought several ChevroletCustom Features Catalogs for the mem-bers to peruse during the meeting. Thecatalogs displayed all of the specialitems available from Chevrolet for ourCorvairs.

Dick also gave the Treasury Report.The club currently has $1,374.71.
