From the Principal…

School Plan: Our Strategic Directions (SDs) and their focuses remain for 2019 as:

SD1: Teaching – Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting, Performance Development

SD2: Learning – Personalised Learning, Positive Behaviour for Learning

SD3: Connecting – Communication, Community Engagement

The leaders of these areas for 2019 are: SD1 – Mrs Field and Mrs Berwick; SD2 – Mrs

Forrester and Mrs Jinks; SD3 – Mr Atkinson and Mrs Berwick. The 2018 Annual Report is

currently being written. It will be published by the end of this term and access will be via the

school website.

The school Executive are currently in the process of planning our milestones (expected markers

of progress) for 2019, which will be used to guide our actions as we move through each term.

School Funds: The school has budgeted to utilise some allocated funds to subsidise

and pay for target programs that all students will benefit from

participating in. This term, the school is fully funding a music

incursion so that all students can experience a performance from a

band who are visiting the Blue Mountains as part of the local music

festival. In Term 2, students in Years 3-6 will be participating in an

Athletics program as part of PE and students across K-6 will be

invited to attend the Life Education program as part of learning in

PDH (personal development and health). These programs will be

partially funded by the school.

There have been a number of major projects planned in 2018 which

are still running, including installation of an LED message board for communication, installation

of a shade shelter in the primary playground, installation of new interactive whiteboards in

classrooms and renovation of the canteen. These projects require approvals and supervision

from School Infrastructure NSW, so the funds remain committed although not yet spent. We

will continue to work through the required processes to make them happen for our school. In

the meantime, we will not be holding a whole school fundraiser this year, instead opting to

consider this as a bi-annual event to allow us time to complete the projects still remaining and to

limit the financial burden that fundraising can have on families.

Events Overview We are continuing in our efforts to minimise the impact on classroom learning of extra-

curricular and external commitments. The current planner for 2019 events was presented at

the P&C meeting last week. There are some important events on our calendar including our

traditional Book Week Parade, Great Book Swap, Art & Music Showcase and Newcombe Ball Gala

Day. We are also incorporating some revisions to other events such as Education Week and

Parent-Teacher Interviews. Excursions, incursions, competitions and class sport programs will

continue to be offered with links to specific focus areas for student learning. Important

upcoming events will be communicated on the school website ‘Home’ page, through the weekly

Skoolbag message ‘The Week Ahead’ and also via notes sent home to parents.

what are we busy about?”

COMMUNITY REMINDERS

Please be mindful of our student safety when using the road spaces on

Mount Hay Rd, near the hall pedestrian gate. The school has received

complaints about drivers ‘double parking’, which is illegal, or stopping

next to a parked car to pick up or drop off students. Allowing children

to cross paths of traffic is extremely dangerous. We ask that as

adults, we model and encourage safe pedestrian behaviour and follow the road rules.

At our school, dogs are not permitted in the grounds. There are several

reasons for this related to maintaining the physical and mental wellbeing of our

students, staff and visitors. We ask that you abide by this request. If you would

like to walk your dog to school for drop off or collection of your children, please

wait with your dog outside the perimeter fence.

Reminder that the student toilets on the school grounds are for students only. An adult

bathroom is located near the school office. Please see office staff if you require the use of a

bathroom.

ZONE SWIMMING

CARNIVAL The Zone Swimming Carnival will be held tomorrow, 22nd February at Glenbrook pool.

We wish our Zone team all the best for a great day – Elke, Kasiah, Elise, Fabian, Ellie, Anna, Hayden, Kaylee, Thalia, Aurea, Ewan, Tarik, Madelyn, Lauren and Elka.

CLEAN UP SCHOOLS DAY – FRIDAY 1ST MARCH Clean Up Schools Day is a national event to inspire students to learn about the

impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their

community. It’s a day when students and teachers work together to clean up an area

of the school that may be collecting rubbish. Leura School will be involved in Clean

Up Schools Day on Friday 1st March.

NO WASTE LUNCHBOX – FRIDAY 1ST MARCH We are combining Clean Up Schools Day with a 'Waste Free Lunch' day. Waste

free lunches enable students to play a part in decreasing the waste we

contribute to landfill. What does this mean exactly?

‘Waste free lunches’ means packing items that can be composted or recycled

and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. That means, for example no single use plastic and no

packaged foods. Students and families at Leura are already very knowledgeable in this area and

many students already bring waste free lunch boxes. We look forward to seeing the majority of

students with a waste free lunch box on Friday March 1st. Thank you to parents and carers who

assist their child to participate with a waste free lunch.

Congratulations to our very own P&C Joint President Vikki Willmott-Sharp for being nominated as a finalist for

NSW P&C Volunteer of the Year 2018 in the West Sydney Electorate!

The winner will be announced at the awards dinner on Friday, 1 March.

Stay tuned!

Our next Swampcare session will be Thursday, 21 March from 1.00–3.00pm. 4-Clownfish students will be joining us that day. Everyone is welcome at any session, but parents of 4C students might particularly like to join us that Thursday for some bush regeneration and exploring. Sturdy footwear required. Please be reassured, we work in the bushland surrounding the swamp, not in the swamp itself! To RSVP or for further information, please contact Lisa Scott-Smith – [email protected].

The Canteen will be re-opening on Friday, 1 March. Yay!

Look out for the note in your child’s bag by the end of this week.

Tuesday, 12 March 2019

P&C AGM 6.30-7.00PM

P&C General Meeting 7.00-8.30PM

Venue TBA

Our next meeting on Tuesday, 12 March will include the P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM). All P&C positions will be vacated and we would love to see some new people join the Executive Team. New people means fresh ideas and re-energises the P&C, which is really important for the school. Roles include President, Vice-President (x2), Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Officer and Fundraising Co-ordinator. Positions also exist for Assistant Treasurer, Uniform Shop Manager, Social Media Coordinator and the Canteen Committee. If you're interested in any of these positions, please contact the current President at [email protected]. Position descriptions will be explained over the coming weeks, or you can check them out at our website:

http://leurapandc.weebly.com/pc-position-descriptions.html

If you’re not interested in a position on the P&C, you are still more than welcome to come along to the general meeting afterwards. We’d love to meet you!
