Dear Parents,

Happy Springtime to one and all. As the end of the term fast approaches, our

students and teachers continue to be as busy as ever. As there is a lot to report

on this week, I’ll get right into it.

Club Grants

On Thursday 23 August, Mrs Dyga, Miss Mair and myself attended the Clubs

NSW Function at St Johns Park Bowling Club. We were very fortunate to be

presented with funding to support three very important programs at PPS into

2013.

We would like to thank:

Cabravale Diggers for supporting our Homework Club

Smithfield RSL for supporting our Transition to school through

Literacy Program

Club Marconi for supporting our Breakfast Club.

Their generous support will help many of our students here at school.

Premiers Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the 199 students who completed this years Premiers Read-

ing Challenge. Not only was it a fantastic effort but it is also great to see how

many of our students are enjoying reading! A big thank you to Mrs Rajapakse and

the teachers for organising and supporting this fantastic initiative.

SASS Appreciation Week

This week is the time that we get to say a big thank you to our School Admin

staff who do a great job helping to run our school. We appreciate everything that

they do!

Thanks to Miss Jan, Mrs Culmone, Mrs Jonson, Mrs Clifford, Mrs Cash, Mrs

White, Mrs Bucci, Mrs Warda and Mr Allan!

Parks Festival

Just a reminder that Parks festival is on next week. All choir and dance group stu-

dents must bring in their permission notes as soon as possible to avoid the disap-

pointment of missing out.

Parents wishing to buy tickets to the evening performance should also return the

note to the office this week.

Stage 2 also received notes to attend the matinee performance. These need to

be returned as soon as possible.

Child Protection and Safety

Just a friendly reminder that we ask that any parent who comes to school during

the day between 9:30am and 2:30pm approach the office for a visitor’s pass.

Even if you are dropping lunches off or picking up your child for a sporting

event, please sign in (and back out) at the office. This will help us meet both

Workplace Health and Safety and Child Protection requirements. We thank you

for your support in this matter.

Gardening Day

On Wednesday 19 September we will having a school garden

working bee. All classes will be asked to bring in gloves to

help out as we aim to tidy up the front garden of our school

(on the Mimosa road side). We will be sending out further in-

formation in the coming weeks.

Kindergarten 2013

If anyone has a child or knows of a child who lives in our area - mainly

Greenfield Park, Bossley Park (some streets) and Prairiewood (some streets)

who is due to start Kindergarten in 2013, we encourage them to contact the

school as soon as possible to arrange enrolment.

Places in our Term 4 Transition to School Literacy program are also filling fast.

So this would be an excellent opportunity to also put their name down for this

new and exciting program.

Finally, I’d just like to say thank you to our parent community who continue to be

proud supporters and advocates of our school. I often have a chance to chat

with parents before and after school and it is great to see how much they value

our home school partnerships. No wonder we have such great kids here at PPS!

Great writing!Great writing! 6A have been learning to write descriptions using onomatopoeia, similes and metaphors. We wrote these descriptions about the watertower. . .

As I was walking up the dead quiet hill, I felt like I was shivering. The mysterious wind whoooed across me. I walked up a little more and a small wind whistled across as if it was a ghost. It was as scary as an old demolished mansion.

Looking forward, there was the old, rusty watertower. It was as tall as Centrepoint Tower. It was older than the oldest person in the town. When I finally walked in front of the tower, I saw that it was very rusty and snails were slithering all over it.

As I was climbing up the old tower, the smell came closer and closer. It smelled like the salty sea but it was not fresh. Every step I took there was a clank to the side of me. Around the tower there was a garlic smell whirling from the wrecked wheelbarrow. It smelled very odd. It was as odd as a goat inside a house.

Soon I settled down, sitting on top of the dirty, dusty tank. All around I could hear the bump from the water pump. I could also hear the clank from the metal bars hitting each other. There was a clunking sound from the bottom of the ladder with half-fallen metal bars.

Bubba and I walked up on the hill. Climbing to the watertower seemed like climb-ing the stairs to the king. I heard a loud noise and the noise sounded like blop, blop, blop, then SMASH. Water was dripping from the ceiling and Bubba was scared like a cat that saw a dog.

Raad Letondeur

Bubba and I walked to the old-looking, rusty watertower. We heard a loud, roaring noise. As we reached the watertower, we saw a barbed-wire fence — it was as sharp as a chainsaw that could slice through your skin when you touch it. When we looked up in the sky, all we could see were clouds that looked like cotton wool. We still didn’t know where the noise came from.

We believe that dogs are better than cats because dogs guard you, help blind people and play with you. Firstly, dogs are fun because they play fetch and play balls and play catch. Cats lay down and be lazy. Secondly, dogs guard you and bark at robbers and bite robbers and keep you safe. Thirdly, they help blind people when they go into the shops and help them when they get stuff. So as you can see, dogs are much better than cats.

Why should we play sports? By Matthew 2S

I believe that you should play sports because it helps develop your physical

activity self esteem and promotes lifelong health.

Firstly, it is great to do physical activity. It builds your strength and it helps you

become fit. Physical activity gives you an opportunity to keep your body in shape and healthy.

Secondly, it builds self-esteem. Self esteem is important because participation in sport can

have a huge positive impact that can deliver confidence to the human body.

Thirdly, sports participation can promote health and wellness. “Lifetime” sports such as golf and

swimming are especially beneficial because we can continue to play these sports as an adult.

So you can see that we definitely need to play sports because it develops your physical

activity, builds self esteem and promotes lifelong health.

Gorillas are in Crisis By Nancy and Maggie 2S

We believe that gorillas are in crisis because the hunters are hunting them and

eating them and the loggers are chopping down the trees where they live.

Firstly, the hunters are hunting them and selling the meat to get money. The hunters are also

cutting their heads and hands for trophies. How would you like it if someone hunted you and cut

off your head and hands?

Secondly, the people that live near the African rainforests eat gorillas. How would you like it if

people wanted to eat you? The gorillas are not being harmful but they are eating them. The

experts predict that in the next 30 years, the gorillas will be extinct.

Thirdly, the loggers are cutting down the trees. The gorillas spend most of their time on trees.

The loggers are cutting down the trees that they hide in. Would you like it if people cut down

your house?

So as you can see, gorillas are definitely in crisis because the hunters are hunting them, people

are eating them and the loggers are chopping down the trees they live in.
