president's podiumWithin this copy of our Newsletter you will read accountsof our Annual Rally which was held in Wanganui. For Annand I the weekend was one not to have been missed.Neither of us heard one word of disappointmentthroughout the weekend. I put this down to all the sterlingwork put in by the Rally Committee who provided aweekend where motorcyclists could just simply relax andbe themselves. You will read further on in the Newsletterthe reporting on the A.G.M.

As you will read in the A.G.M. minutes Bruce’s remit todisestablish the role of Editor from the Executive wassuccessful. The position has been replaced by a positionof General Member. If you are willing to serve your Club inthis position please make contact with me.

There is finally good news for those of us riding in theSouth Island. In February, Avon City Suzuki took over the

reigns as Christchurch's latest BMW Motorrad dealer and Authorised Service Centre.John Glasswell, After Sales Manager for Europe Imports, has been busy moving newstock and technical gear from Hampton Motorcycles to Avon City's facilities in EpsomRoad, Sockburn as well as bringing Michael Larson, Service Manager up to speed onthe latest BMW diagnostic software.

The Epsom Street site includes ample parking, a great showroom, with a large purposebuilt workshop with full facilities and the friendly, qualified technicians are able to do onsite warrant of fitness and registrations.

Avon City Suzuki is also the only 5 Star Dealer for Arai Helmets in the South Island. This means when you buy an Arai Helmet from Avon City Suzuki you get standard shopprices, lower than the RRP that other shops sell the helmets for, as well as free lifetimeservicing on the helmet. So if you are living in Christchurch or passing through why notstop off and introduce yourselves.

Have to run now the Editor is waiting for this month’s Podium so he can put theNewsletter to bed.

Wewelcome your contribution.

ApologyAs we now combine the AnnualGeneral Meeting and rally at the oneevent, there is a massive amount ofmaterial presented for the next issue ofthe Newsletter after that weekend.

Of necessity, I have had to prioritise.

I have included all the Minutes andFinancial reporting from the AGM.

I have included all the Area Reps'reports that I received.

I have included all the text I got fromRangitikei relating to the Rally.

And I have included all the advertisingthat has been paid for (and we shouldall appreciate and support ouradvertisers for helping to fund ourNewsletter.)

I've included as many photos as I couldfit at a reasonable size and resolution.

I'll be including further images andstories spread over a few more issues. Iapologise to all those contributors Ihave had to leave on the spike thismonth, but a quart into a pint pot won'tgo.

Bwucie,

rangitikeiThe Rally was the big ticket item for ourarea in January. We saw up to 94Register friends sit down to a sumptuousmeal at the Infusion restaurant at theWanganui Raceway. A separate reportdetails the highlights of that weekend.

In various ways, 21 members from theRangitikei area contributed to what wehope you regard as a very successfulRally. We now pass the Rally mantle tothe organisers of the Hanmer Springsevent.

And of course we still have ourprogramme of rides and meals to lookforward to.

Our first non Rally meal for the year is setfor 24 February at Ashhurst. Great foodand great company is anticipated and weknow that it will exceed expectations.

We have rides and meal meetingsplanned right through to June this year.Feel free to join us.

Introduction:

The BMW Owners Register is an organisation whose members join together for rides tonominated venues and for other social occasions. The organiser nominates thedestination and regrouping stages along the way, but otherwise has no influence uponthe way that riders behave on the road. There is no element of organised competition inthe rides.

Riding Code:

1. All register members on register rides shall do so as individuals responsible for theirown safety and shall take into account the safety of others they encounter on the ride.

2. Register members are responsible for ensuring that their motorcycles are in a safe andlegal condition, the minimum being to Warrant of Fitness standards.

3. Riders, pillions, and sidecar passengers where required, shall have as a minimumStandards New Zealand approved motorcycle helmets, and stout footwear, gloves andclothing that will be capable of protecting their body in the event of a mishap.

4. Register members are to go to the aid of any others suffering a mishap.

5. Ride organisers shall nominate the destination for the ride as well as any regroupinglocations or other stops. The organiser is not responsible for other riders' behaviour orsafety.

6. Riders shall ride at a speed and in a way that is comfortable for them. Do not rideoutside your personal comfort envelope.

7. If a rider is unfamiliar with the route, they shall arrange to follow another rider who doesknow the way and who travels at a comfortable pace.

8. Riders who decide to travel as a group shall adopt a staggered riding formation suchthat there is an accepted following distance to the rider immediately in front. A reasonablefollowing distance is indicated by a time of two seconds between riders for dryconditions, and longer for inclement conditions and on loose surfaces.

9. The Organiser and or the Register are not responsible for participants' safety, and allparticipants participate at their own risk. All participants are aware that they are travellingon open public roads and are responsible for their own safety and compliance with allRoad Rules and Laws.

Park on 28/29 March is less that 2 hoursaway. While we are in the rally spirit itwould be good to see lots of Rangitikeimembers show up even if only for a chaton the Saturday afternoon.

This is my last Area Report. I step downas Area Rep on 1 March. For those whotook the time to read my monthlymutterings, thanks. This is aufwiedersehn, sayonara, farewell, haere ra,so long, as your Rangitikei Area Rep.

We will miss helping keep our widerregister family up with our busy localschedule, but we will still be a part of theBMWOR.

Combi-Ride with East Coast, V1.0

I offered to lead a ride to the Hawkes Bayback in 2014 and was contacted by NormNichol who offered to meet us atWaipukarau and show us some of theirterritory.

We arranged to meet at the servicestation in Ashhurst for a 9.00 amdeparture.

There were 5 bikes and 9 members readyfor adventure.

Barbara and Barry, Karen and Mark, Annand Peter, Lance, and Sue and Don madeup our party.

The plan was to head through the gorgeand take Top Grass road toDannevirke. From there it was Makotukuand Ormondville with a stop at Takapauto remove some layers of clothing as theday was heating up.

I didn't get the timing correct as we werenot going to be in Waipakarau for ourscheduled meeting time of 10.00. Ithought about a phone call to Norm butdid not have his number nor did any ofour party.

In future the tour guide will be in my topbox for just this eventuality.

We arrived about 20 minutes late and ourhosts were most understanding.

Dan was to be our leader and wedeparted at 11.00.We were led on aninteresting tour of farm land betweenstate highway 2 and highway 50.The landwas parched and brown with theoccasional patch of green where a farmerwas able to irrigate crops. The land closerto the Ruahine range was noticeablygreener.

We then headed up a valley where theroad got progressively steeper and cameto the top of the Raukawa range withmagnificent views over the valley below.Cars on the highway seemed to be smalldots in the distance. The only greenpatch was the wet lands of LakePoukawa.

It was now time for our lunch destinationat the Paper Mulberry cafe which is in anold school.

We enjoyed conversation with our hostsover eats and various drinks.

By now it was 2.00 pm and time to hit thehighway. A fuel stop in Dannevirke beforewe said our farewells and headed forhome.

We all had a fantastic day out with specialthanks to the East Coast members.

When we read in the BMWOR newsletterthat Rangitikei members were planningon riding into Hawkes Bay on the sameday as our February Club ride, we felt itwas too good an opportunity to misscatching up with them. After somecooler weather, a cloudless day dawnedwith the promise of temperatures in thehigh 20s.

The East Coast contingent met inHastings and rode down to Café Latitude40 in Waipukurau. We had a lovely chattytime over coffee waiting for the out oftown riders from Palmerston North andfurther south. After coffees, Les fromNapier and Lance from Wanganui headedhomeward, while the rest of us followedDan, our tour leader for the day, into thehills. We were led along some interestingand scenic country roads, that in our fouryears here we had not travelled on. TheHawkes Bay plains are very dry at presentbut we found there was some greencloser to the hills. As we have come toexpect, there was very little traffic. Wedetoured up Burma Road to admire themagnificent view from the top and thenheaded back to the Paper Mulberry forlunch. There we found some TriumphStag club cars, and some MX5 club carsparked up - probably something to dowith it being Waitangi weekend. We hada bit of a wait to be served, but the foodwas good and the chat even better.

It was great catching up with membersfrom a neighbouring area and we hope todo it again. Our thanks go to Dan forscoping and leading this very successfulride.

bay of plentyIt was great to have 18 members from theBay of Plenty come to the annualBMWOR rally. We enjoyed a great groupride down via the railway café at NationalPark for lunch. The weather was hot as

ever, but this place provided a welcomereprieve with a lovely shady garden areaand cool breeze. It was dodgems with thewet tar thru the Paraparas, but what agreat time we had at the rally and wellorganized rides. Our highlight being animpromptu swim in the cool Wanganuiriver to evade the 30 degree heat! We allmade our own way home, some with newfriends and routes. We (Mike & Geri)hopped the ditch to Picton, Benheim andthen went for a great ride up French Passwith Bob who later ventured off south tothe Molesworth. We carried on to Takakafor a few nights and rode up the AbelTasman National Park to Totaranui.Clearest water ever here for a welcomeswim! Home via The Criterion at Bullsand only a few spits of rain after 10 daysof sunshine – well ridden and rested.

February we enjoyed more sunshine andgreat country roads for our monthly ridewith 8 bikes out from Tauranga toKawhia, picking up another two bikes onthe way at Wharepapa (13 membersincluding pillion riders total). KawhiaFresh fish and chip filled us up for variousroutes home, several enjoying the gravelroads through to Raglan en route!

Looking forward to upcomingevents….See you soon….

wellingtonWe had our Monthly Club Night last nightand we are going to use the localmembership to talk about their Careerexperiences where they had interestingcareers, recent travel experiences, andexperiences from other organizationsthey may belong to. This is an attempt toget more members along to Club Nightmeetings as at present I am loathed toask members to approach people aspossible guest speakers to come alongand then only have 10 or 12 membersturn up.

otago/southlandEarly in January five of us converged onthe Lazy Dog cafe near Wanaka. The dogwas indeed lazy, the food and companyexcellent, the headwind built up to bequite intense by the time we got to thelunch stop. Some of the Nenthorn gravelwas sampled on the way home, and I wasintroduced to an impressively hairpinnedbit that I'd somehow overlooked in all theyears I worked up that way. As I write thisI'm just back from our relatively lazy ridearound Otago Peninsula. A collection ofboth new and familiar faces took invarious sights (and sounds, thereseemed to be Haka being practiced inthe Marae when we stopped outside toadmire the carvings.) So that's one longday and one relaxed meander under theOtago/Southland banner since the NewYear. Both floated my boat (that, apparently, being what boats do).

With the absolute support of the weatherGods, the 2015 Rally was blessed withthe best summer weather most of us canremember. And that weather patternexisted both before and after the rallyitself, giving Rally goers fine ridingweather to and from the event.

The first to arrive were there the nightbefore, and when the Rally opened at 2pm on the Friday, a steady numberarrived. They booked in at the Top TenOffice, and “clocked in” at Rally HQalmost next door to the office. Committeemembers greeted everyone at Rally HQwhere several display boards displayedupcoming events and times over theweekend. Rally packs were distributed.Tea and coffee were available at HQthroughout the weekend. The minibusran trips to the supermarket throughoutthe weekend for those needing to stockup on provisions.

The first gathering was the 7.00 pmfinger food meal. The food was deliciousand plentiful. That was the cateringpattern set by Infusion cateringthroughout our time together. In fact, upto 94 meals were served in one sittingduring the course of the weekend.

That evening Editor Bruce provided atutorial about the role of the Tail EndCharlie (TEC). It culminated in a stageproduction: crashed bike borrowed fromJoe Lett, car driver (Roger) injured, rider(Folker) hurt and pillion (Jeanette)missing in action. This drew a big crowd!

Breakfast was available from 7.00 am onSaturday and those wanting to beconsidered for the Concoursed'Elegance lined up their bikes from 8.00am. Most riders seemed to haveentered. Judging as completed by 930am and ride briefings were given foreach of the two rides. Before the ridesbegan, Neville provided a tutorial aboutskilful dirt road riding in anticipation ofthe day ahead. Sealed rides were led byRoger (Don TEC) and the unsealed werein the hands of Peer (TEC John).

The sealed ride visited the Bruce Ardellmuseum at Fordell en route toHunterville, and the unsealed ridecompleted the somewhat remote loop toKai Iwi from the Top Ten. A flat tyre heldthem up briefly but Garry had the skills, tools, and spare tube to get a fellow riderback up and running.

Todd Crighton of Motomart and Nick andMichael of Europe Imports brought along4 new demonstration bikes for Rallygoers to admire and try. Several did both.

Some who stayed at the Top Ten duringthe day took advantage of the Minibusservice and visited the local Market andtook a trip upriver on the Waimariepaddle-steamer.

Riders were away on time on Saturday, and back in time for a shower and cool-down, before the two big Tranzit buses

pulled up to whisk them off to theWanganui Raceway at 4 30pm . A featureof the whole weekend was the way thatRally goers kept to the time frames, making catering and scheduling workwell.

The AGM began at 5.00pm and was allover by 6.20pm. By providing all Rallygoers with the Area Rep reports in theirRally packs, there was time saved forother business and an earlier arrival at thebar. A group photo was the last task ofthe AGM.

The meal was served at 7.00 pm. Afterthe meal we celebrated the 2015 rally bycutting the celebratory cake provided bySue and Don (from Levin). That honourwas given to Ron Rutherford, our onlyRangitikei Life Member #18, and theyoungest person attending (12 yo Ethan).

Raffles have always been a significantpart of each Rally. We were impressed bythe generosity of sponsors (AON, EuropeImports, Motomart, Horizons, I-SiteWanganui, Don & Sue Cross, Robert Joe,Barry & Jeanette Hawthorn, RallyCommittee Heather & Lance Nixon,Allied Concrete, Henry Plowright) andRally goers who supported the ticketsellers. The prize draw was triggered byPresident Peter and successive winnersdrew the next prize until we hadconsumed the 31 prizes on the table. The major prize of the night was a $500voucher from AON insurance. Thehonour of drawing that went to our localLife Member Ron. The winner was Rallycommittee member Neil, whoimmediately offered the prize back to themeeting and it was redrawn. This was anexceptional offer. The eventual winnerwas Graeme Duncan.

The buses were right on time at 9 50 pmand the Rally goers were driven back tothe Top Ten. Security person Jeffreported no problems during the eveningwhile we were away enjoying the AGMand Rally dinner.

Again, breakfast began at 7. 00am and at9 15 the Gymkhana was under way onthe large grassed park area near the TopTen office. There were 15 members whotested their skills against the clock. Therewere no major incidents, and there wasan appreciative crowd watching, including some members of the publicand the Wanganui Chronicle reporter andphotographer. Kevan W had a star role inthe paper the next day. A large team of 11lady Rally goers were asked to help withthe judging and did a fine job. The winnerwas of the Rick Kirkman trophy wasannounced at dinner that night.Congratulations Graeme for the quickesttime without faults.

The two organised rides set off at10.00am and 10.30am. The sealed roadriders went to Ohakune for lunch via thenow sealed Wanganui River Road, and

the unsealed road riders had lunch at theGumboot Manor in Taihape aftertravelling along the Turakina Valley Road. All were back by 5.30pm, and it wasobvious which bikes went on theunsealed roads.

During the day some Rally goers went ontheir own exploration of the area, andsome explored the city of Wanganui.Others took one of the two guided minibus trip around the city and suburbs.

All riders came back safely from theirlong, hot rides and many took to theheated on site pool to freshen up. Dinner, this time a barbecue, was served at7.00pm and was followed by theawarding of the Kirkman trophy. A veryhelpful talk by BMW's John Glasswelltold us about the successful sales ofBMW motorcycles during 2014, and thework being done by the BMWorganisation to increase the distributionof service centres, especially in theSouth Island.

The announcement that all had waitedfor all weekend was the venue of the2016 Rally/AGM. President Peterannounced that it would be at HanmerSprings during the Auckland anniversaryweekend. This was greetedenthusiastically.

Chef de Mission Barry thanked allmembers for their attendance andwished them a safe journey home thenext day.

The next day saw breakfast from 7.00am, with the Rally goers beginning to driftaway until the last person to leave rodeout the gate at 10 15 am.

Barry, Jeanette, Neil, Brenda, Roger,Liz, Peer, Lis, Neville, Kay, Paul,Heather and I thank you all for your greatcompany and hope that you all have lot ofexciting memories to share with yourfriends.

Peter,

Several years ago, I joined your club andhad the good fortune to meet thenmembers Philip and Judy Meyer ofPukekohe. They had answered my ad inyour publication to buy, rent or borrow abike for a NZ adventure. They loaned metheir K75C which allowed be to tour mostof your great country and I wrote a follow-up report on my travels which youpublished in 2000. I want to do it againand hope to ship my 2011 R1200GS toNZ and leave it there when donetravelling on it with my wife. What isthe chance that someone in your clubmight want to own such a greatmachine?

This is still very tentative and we mustexplore the cost of shipping the bike but

it just might be a good thing for all. And ifthat does not work out, who would yousuggest for bike rental for four weeks forour own self-touring as I have riddenmost of your roads and tramped 2,900miles from Cape Reinga to Stuart Island,Big Mercury, Tiri Tiri, etc. and want tocome back. The clock is running and atage 70, the bucket list grown!!!

May all be well with you and hope yoursummer has been comfortable.

Cheers,

Steve Shauger (Col. USAF Ret)

Hi David – I hope you are well.

I see that your annual R.A.G. at Pokaka ison the weekend 28/29 March. By purechance I have organised a R90S get

together in Taupo for the same weekend. With the 90S being produced from 1973to 1975 this year is 40 years on from theproduction midpoint – especiallysignificant as we go onto cheap rego! Afew 90S owners had the idea of a gettogether and we have planned this for the28/29 March and I hope we will reel inabout a dozen bikes. It was then that Irealised you also had your rally then.

Not sure if you are planning a ride thatgoes anywhere near Taupo but if anyoneis passing they are welcome to come inan check us out or if you are going on aride from Pokaka we could do the sameand meet up at some midpoint.

We will be staying at: ChelmswoodMotel, 250 Lake Terrace, State Highway1, Taupo, New Zealand | Ph: 0800 238238 www.chelmswood.co.nz/home.html

Membership Secretary Annual Report

In this report, more than anything else, Inote the poor renewal response weachieved again this year and I would liketo see a change in the notification part ofthis process.

Membership has again decreased a little. We now have 564 members includingpartners. I note that there are severalcases of members not renewing themembership of a partner, who hadpreviously been a member. And, no, I amnot talking about relationships fallingapart. These are members renewing theirmembership just for themselves and yousave yourself $4.50. I have enrolled justthree new members since returning fromoverseas in early October, two indicatinga partner, but only enrolling themselves.A sign of our times, perhaps withadditionally a plethora of motorcyclebrands and models to suit riders.

The renewal process of your membershipto this club is what I would call a passiveone. It depends entirely on whether youread the exhortations made on a coupleof prominent notices in our newsletterpreceding the renewal cut-off at the endof June, to either go on-line to renewyour membership, probably pay on-lineas well or accomplish the process viasnail mail, paying with a cheque.

This depends on members to actuallyread their newsletter. I would like to thinkthat most members would read somepart of the newsletter. The yellow

highlighting of the renewal noticecertainly stood out.

After the renewal date passed, some 280members had not renewed this time. Oureditor then sent emails to these people, about 15 % of which were found to benot current. These members received asnail-mail reminder. As a result weachieved a reasonable recovery.

I also note that several memberscomplained about not being included inthe bi-annual Touring Guide. It is up tomembers, when renewing, to tick the boxof the renewal portion which relates tobeing included in this booklet. Thisprocess, too, is made either on-line or onthe paper renewal form. I have, on severaloccasions felt like being piggy-in-the-middle for not including members in thisguide, but I will not second-guess amember’s intentions where a tick/no tickwill do the trick.

The monthly delivery of newsletter labelshas mostly gone without any hiccups.Membership cards were printed promptlyby Nicholas Baker as were name tags byApex Trophies.

I put myself up for re-election.

Editor Annual Report

I made myself available as Editor for thepast year because there just didn’t seemto be a sniff of another volunteer, and Ibelieve the Newsletter is a very importantpart of the “glue” that holds the Registertogether. I did this not withoutmisgivings, because it also required that Ibe part of your Committee.

It has been an absolute privilege to beyour Editor. I get first sight of the storiesand images you contribute, includingmaterial which I have had to leave on thespike because of lack of space. Theamount of material generated by AreaReps and members has been such that Ihave had to use very little filler materialsourced from outside the Register.

I have benefited from the relationshipbuilt with our printers, Printing.com,Wellington CBD, and our advertisers, bymy predecessor, Garry Williams. All ourexisting advertisers have continued theirsupport into the new financial year, andwe have also received support this yearfrom Compass Expeditions: RobHargreaves and his South Americanfellow travelers contributed to that, Ibelieve.

In response to a problem that AdobePageMaker was creating for the printers Ichanged the software used forNewsletter and Tour Guide editing, to theOpen Source program Scribus. It’s beena bit of a learning curve, but it produces

files the printers are happy with. I alsochanged the paper weight from 100gsmstock to 80gsm. This has had threebenefits; it makes the Newsletter easierto fold, and it keeps the folded size below6mm thickness so we are not beingpenalised by NZ Post, and it’s cheaper! Ithas led to a slight increase in colourbleed through the pages, but I think thepros outweigh that slight con.

I’m not available for the Committee nextyear, so this may well be my last hurrah. The editing has been fun.

Treasurer Annual Report

Once again it gives me pleasure topresent to our members the TreasurersReport and Statement of FinancialPosition for the twelve months ended30th June 2014. As is the case withsimilar incorporated societies theseaccounts have been prepared on a ‘Cash’rather than ‘Accrual’ basis and thereforedo not take into account any outstandingdebtors or creditors as at balance date. However, for the record as at 30 Junethere were debtors of $4,665 (magazineadvertising) and creditors of $1,771(printing and stationery costs) due. These debtors and creditors have sincebeen received/paid.

Operational Income & Expenditure:

Income:

Total operating income for the year was$26,152 down from the previous year by$1,456. Subscriptions at $20,737 weredown by $236 and interest income wasdown by $208. Main decline howeverwas in advertising revenue, down by$1,040 from previous year.

Expenditure:

Total expenditure this financial yearamounts to $24,321. This is down amassive $12,462 from the previous year. You may well ask how was this achieved.I can assure you that it was in no partachieved by a frugal, miserly and/orpenny-pinching attitude adopted by theExecutive!

It was in fact a $10,148 reduction inprinting costs. Members will rememberthat the previous financial yearsStatement of Financial Position reflectedan overpayment to our printing supplier. At the time the accounts were closed offfor that year a full reconciliation of ouraccount with the supplier was still inprogress. It was eventually establishedthat we had overpaid them by $3,659.This was subsequently credited to ouraccount. During that year we also paid fortwelve magazine print runs (instead ofthe usual 11) pushing the costs up byapproximately a further $1,400.

Other major variances were Postage –down by $831; Stationery/consumables –up by $1,883; meeting costs – down by$1,886.

Surplus/Deficit:

Operating result is a healthy $1,831surplus and that, along with net surplusfrom Event activities has seen anincrease in members’ funds of $2,992 to$49,792.

IRD-Tax Status:

Further to the remits passed at the lastAGM we have succeeded in nowqualifying as a ‘Not-for-profitorganisation’.

What does this mean you may ask -Essentially it means that provided our netincome after expenses is less than$1,000.00 in a financial year, we are notrequired to file an income tax return.

It also means that we have been granteda ‘RWT Certificate of Exemption’. A copyof this certificate has been lodged withour bankers and we no longer have RWTdeducted from any interest we receive.

I can see some of you are about to say‘hold on – you have just told us all that theRegister made a healthy surplus inexcess of $1,000’. Well that is absolutelycorrect but for taxation purposesmembership subscriptions and/or leviesare classed as exempt income. So, if weignore this income then our surplus isturned into a significant deficit and weare therefore not required to furnish a taxreturn.

Capital Expenditure:

No capital purchases were made duringthe year.

Cash Reserves:

At year-end we held $35,000 on TermDeposit and that is essentially our cashreserve. This is some $5,000 more than2013-year-end but I would expect thiswill be eroded during the current year asfull year’s magazine and Tour Guide coststake effect.

Regalia Shop:

Sales amounted to $790 and afterpurchases and some write-offs the resultwas a cash surplus of $168 with a closingstock of $4,997.

Treasurer’s Recommendations:

1. Subscriptions: I see no reason toincrease subscriptions andrecommend that they be held atcurrent levels for a further twelvemonths.

2. Budget 2014/15: In terms of ourConstitution I also present for yourinformation an estimate of Income &Expenditure for the current financialyear.

I table this report and move that it, alongwith the Statement of Financial Positionas at 30th June 2014, be accepted as atrue and correct record of the financialposition of the Register.

Vice President Report

I unfortunately won’t be attending thisAGM. The planning for my annual NorthIsland trip this year got messed upthrough my being on a public healthwaiting list for some surgery. I have nowrecovered, am back on the bike but won’tbe making it to the meeting. Brucehowever has kindly offered to read thisreport for me.

When I was asked to take up the role ofVice President until the next election, itwas explained that the vision was for allmembers, from Kaitaia to Bluff, to havean equal chance of their voice beingheard and their needs addressed by theExec Committee. I was told that I wasbeing asked as the South Island hasnever previously had any directrepresentation on the Exec. I soon setabout trying to establish what it was, thecurrently “not heard” members wantedexpressed and found that there were verysimilar things originating from most ofthe areas that no longer had establishedArea Reps. In subsequent meetings, Ifound myself attempting to representperhaps more actual North Island thanthe South Island members in number. Igave it my best shot, and at least gotmany of the things said even if not heard.

Unfortunately I found myself in a positionwhere I was not able to be saying enoughof the type of things wanting to be heard,to be able to gain enough cooperationand support from within the Exec to bringabout much actual change. Whether theWebsite becomes more welcoming, friendly and used remains to be seen butI can’t honestly say that I see much moretransparency around the activities of theExec or any decrease in the proliferationof new handbooks, policies orconstitutional changes. A more positivething I can report on, is that there are folkout there who appear to be enjoying thepictures posted on the now nationalFlickr photo site. Over 122,000 in totaland at least 51,000 photos have beenclicked on and opened up to view since itbecame the national site. (Not muchincrease in people’s readiness to sharetheir pics and send them in to be put upon the site however.)

I see a serious and growing rift in themembership of the BMWOR to the pointwhere we will either see the club splittingor we see further increases in the passionfor the marquee being expressed and thegetting out together and riding of of thebikes being done through activities nolonger linked to or associated with theRegister. It is my sincere hope and wishthat the incoming committee makes agreater effort to address this sad but

growing trend. I thank you for theopportunity to at least attempt to make adifference.

AGM Report for 2014: President PeterTibbs

It has been another busy year this pastyear starting with a very enjoyable andmemorable time spent at the AnnualRally based in Nelson. Thanks to Revtiand Sue along with the Rally Team. Theyall put together a great Rally their effortsguaranteed us all an event to remember.

Other events

To take part in a six day tour of theLower North Island with members ofthis Club some coming from as far awayas Alexandra was a great way for Ann andI to spend six days on the road enjoyingthe company of fellow members. Irecommend you all try a tour of your own.

The North Island Rag Rally was onceagain well supported. The chef should begiven a special mention. To see him turnup on his trusty K 100 loaded with heapsof cooking gear plus food for a small armyis a sight to behold.

It was especially pleasing to see the lifebought back into the Hot August Night.Mike and Geri put in a sterling effort andproduced a result that reflected theirefforts.

The South Island Rag Rally sawmembers make their way to Haast for aweekend get together. I am told that oneor two got a little damp on their way toHaast. It should not go unmentioned thatTony and Andy’s timing of the Rally madeit possible to take part in the Rally thenmove on to the Burt Munro event.

Now when you couple these eventstogether with our weekend rides, midweek rides and social get-togethersthere is always plenty to do for anyonewho chooses to take part in Clubactivities.

BMWOR is very fortunate to have heretoday two dealerships and they arerepresented by Henry and Todd. We alsohave here with us Michael, Nick and Johnfrom Europe Imports. Many of you willremember mid 2013 when EuropeImports took control of BMW motorcycleparts from BMW Aus / NZ. This processtook place at the same time as BMWchanged their parts distribution systemsworldwide. To say it was a smoothtransition would be far from the mark. However I am pleased to tell you thatEurope Imports have worked through thedifficult times and now have on hand inNew Zealand more spare parts thanBMW ever had. That’s really good news.

I am aware of changes coming up withsome of our Area Reps, one of thosebeing Wellington, where Peter Nash willtake over the role from Stephen Oatleyand as we have quite a few Reps heretoday you might all like to take thechance to have a word with Peter. Overthis weekend would be a good time totouch base with each other before ournext Area Rep meeting.

However going forward I have two majorconcerns at the moment:

First is the lack of an Area Rep in someof our Areas. The importance of ourArea Reps should not be underestimated. They are the glue that holds an Areatogether. The role of Area Rep does nothave to be a lonely one. It is just asimportant that we make sure our repsdon’t become overloaded. We can allmake sure this doesn’t happen byoffering a helping hand once in a while.Make it team fun in your area and you willall spend plenty of good times together.

Another concern is the shortage ofAuthorised Service Providers. ManyMembers have to travel long distancesthroughout the North Island in order tohave their bikes serviced and that has tobe a concern. However the situation inthe South Island is simply unacceptableto all those riders that ride BMW’s. That’sright unacceptable to all of us. Just thinkabout it. If you live in the North Island andare planning a trip south and your tyreshave 2 or 3000kms left on them and yourbike is 2000km away from its next servicewouldn’t it be great to be able to bookinto an authorised BMW service providerfor those new tyres and that service inthe South Island. What about that for anoption?

But first things first! The situation in theSouth Island in regards to authorisedBMW service providers is absolutelyunacceptable to me. As it stands nowRick at MCR in Dunedin has just recentlyreceived the latest diagnostic servicingcomputer gear. That leaves us in theSouth Island a long way from anAuthorised service centre if we don’t livein Dunedin. In order to remedy thissituation it is going to take a lot of efforton the part of all of us. Your support isbest expressed by resisting thetemptation of going on line to sourcesubstitute parts off the internet.

Now if you are unable or unwilling toresist the temptation of going on line andyou want genuine BMW replacementparts or to upgrade accessories then atleast contact your nearest dealer andhave a word with them. Give them thechance to compete on an, apples forapples basis while bearing in mind we areall in this Club for the long game. Thiscould well turn out to be a David andGoliath encounter whilst the Executivepush the boundary’s on all possibleoptions with all party’s that could assistin our endeavours to see theestablishment of service centres in the

South Island. After all anything worthhaving is worth the effort as far as I amconcerned.

Put simply: no importer; no dealer; noservice centres. Where does that leaveus as a club? At the end of the day wemust all work together as a team in orderto ensure a long term future for us all.

Now on a lighter note I would like tothank you all for sharing in this weekend.Your presence makes all the work thatthe Rally Team here in Rangitikei, put intothis weekend worthwhile. We are veryfortunate that we have so many peopleworking away in the background for thewellbeing of our Club. Some of thepeople we don’t see so much of forexample are our Archivist, Webmaster,Gear Shop Manager and The FoldingTeam who prepare the Newsletter forposting out to you. Dave Morris is alsohere this weekend. Most of you know bynow that Dave is compiling an overviewof the Register’s first forty years. Tocomplete this task Dave needs your help. Why not take the opportunity thisweekend to have a word with him, after allyour story matters.

Let’s not forget the Executive Team whoworks away at preserving our past whileplanning to safeguard our future. Whileon the subject of the Executive we havetwo members standing down this year. One being the Vice President and theother being our Editor. When Bruce tookon the role as Editor he had a set ofmassive boots to fill. I would just like tosay Garry you can stop looking for yourboots Bruce has been wearing them.

In 2016 I would like to see a V.P. with yoursupport take over the role of President sowith that in mind it is my intention tostand down in 2016. My enthusiasm forthis Club has never wavered and Ann’ssupport for me in this role as Presidenthas been solid. It is for these reasons thatI put myself forward for President for2015 and ask for your support.

Bay Of Plenty Area Report.

We took over the reins as Area reps fromBay of Plenty from Peter Lyner in March2014.

It has been a busy year with a good yearof mild weather bringing many successfulrides. Monthly Sunday rides havebrought out many different types of ridersand bikes, great to see some new and oldfaces turning up, and also to connectwith members in Whakatane andRotorua. Generally attended by 6-16bikes we’ve had short and longer rides

with plenty of coastal scenery, gas stopsand photo opportunities to enjoy. Willinghelpers for ‘tail end Charlie’s and cornerman systems all working have made forrelaxed riding. Mainly sealed routes forthe organised ride, however a shortgravel alternative route was added to ourlast ride for interest. We are trying to syncour rides with Mt Motorcycles who alsohave some great rides/overnighters andencourage members to join these also.

Breakfast or coffee venues for meetingand hour before the rides (9:30-10:30am)have been popular, as this has providednon-riding partners with an opportunityto come and socialize before the ridersleave. We’ve been fortunate to havemembers offer their homes for pot luckdinners alternate months and a Xmasparty which have been well attended, although we have not had many newmembers come to these. This year werevived the Hot August Night which wasattended by 55 and seemed wellreceived as a good overnighter for thosefrom out of town.

We had our first weekend away – a 2-nighter to Ohakune and over the GentleAnnie to Napier with 11 attending andgood camaderie and positive feedback,so hope to have a few more of these in2015. Membership numbers havedropped and it appears many membersdo not realize they have lapsed theirmembership fees, or their paymentrecords and current details have beenlost. We email our members regularlywith updates on rides and events;encourage new members andconnection with members from otherAreas.

Mike Long & Geri Goodman.

Waikato

Due to life changes Mike Amphlett hashad to resign as your Waikato’s area repand has passed the reins onto me. I wishthank Mike for volunteering me to replacehim and wish him all the best for thefuture, I hope to see him on a few rides inthe further.

For those of you that don’t know me myname is Chris Talbot (AKA Chocky). Mywife Michelle and I have been married for15 yrs now and we have an 11y.o.daughter Arabella. I am totally motorcyclemad and will ride anywhere, anytime, nomatter what the weather gods throw atme. It is my therapy and the best way tofind peace in the hectic life we lead.Unfortunately my wife and daughter don’tshare my madness although they can bepersuaded to come out for the odd day'sride.

I have been riding for 33 yrs now andhave owned 9 bikes in that time from50cc to 1200cc. Bought my first bike (aYamaha 100 2 stroke) at the age of 16and did not get my first car till I was 29.Could not carry the hang glider or whitewater kayak on the bike, so had to buy acar to transport them on.

I joined the register in 1992 when Ibought my first BMW, a shiny new RoyalBlue K 1100 LT. I instantly fell in love withmy little beemer and we had a beautiful11 yrs love affair travelling everywheretogether before she divorcing me for anew owner, a police man fromChristchurch. Hurt to see my bluebeemer going down the road without mebut had to put family first and you can’t fita newborn baby on a bike (needed asecond car).

In 1996 I took a break from the register asI was in two other clubs and did not havethe time for a third. Deciding it was timeto put a little trill in my life I took up hanggliding and white water kayaking. Thetwo sports worked well together as hanggliding was very weather dependant, so ifI could not fly due to bad weather, I wouldgo kayaking instead.

In 2011 after 8 hard yrs with no bikedecided my daughter was old enough soraced out and bought my current bike, a1999 K1200LT (I’m in love again) and re-joined the register. I am enjoying my rideseven more the older I get, although mybody seems to be complaining more thanit did when I was 16 but I guess that thesame for all of us.

I would love to meet the rest of theWaikato members (or any other BMWORmembers) so come along for a ride withme next run, your all welcome. The doorsalways open for a coffee and chat if youcan’t make it on a run.

Till then happy riding and keep therubber side down.

East Coast

The year began with the annual rally inNelson, which a number of membersfrom our area enjoyed. Sadly, BarbaraEnnor died while touring in the SouthIsland after the rally, and many Registermembers met again in Napier, early inFebruary, to pay their last respects. Wecontinue to enjoy the company of Les onour rides.

During the year, we socialised at ThePuketapu, meeting for dinner on the lastTuesday of the month. The Puketapuwon “Outstanding Local” in the 2013Hospitality Awards. The group numbersaround 20 each month and enjoys agood pub meal, although in August anumber of members were overseas andthe group numbered just eight. We alsomet for Mid Winter Christmas Dinner atScholars Training Restaurant, EIT on oneof the coldest nights of the year.

There were two overnighters for ourmembers during the year. In June werode up to Morere, staying Saturdaynight in a lodge at the hot pools. Then inAugust a number of our group enjoyedHot August Night at Omokoroa, organised by the Bay of Plenty Area.Winter is the ideal time for a hot swimand the East Coast people enjoy sometime in the pool.

Rides have been organised each monthduring the year, and in addition to theabove we have ridden to Wairoa,Waimarama, Waipawa, Tutira,Porangahau, Maraekakaho and Waiouru. The September ride suffered from theannual migration to the northernhemisphere, and those still at homecycled the Hastings Blossom FestivalRide, instead of going on the scheduledBMWOR ride to Tarawera.

Robyn and Warren hosted members forour end-of-year barbecue in December.Unfortunately, it was an overcast coolday, so we all drove our cars and saved aswim in the pool for warmer weather.Robyn and Warren were terrific hosts andwe all had a very pleasant afternoon.

During the year we have welcomed newmembers Wade and Jamie, andfareweled Colin and Diane who havemoved to Hamilton, and Miles andChristine who recently moved to MtMaunganui.

Rangitikei Annual Report

At Nelson a year a ago we offered to hostthe 2015 Rally & AGM. So Rangitikei rantwo parallel programmes throughout theyear: one was business as usual, and onewas the Rally event maintained by Chefde Mission Barry Hawthorn.

Our Area has a pattern of a meal on thelast Tuesday of the month and a ride onthe second Sunday. Each event ismanaged by a member who has offered(some say empanelled) to be eventleader. Apart from sharing the loadamongst the membership, it also giveopportunity to practice leadership andorganisational skills. In short, itstrengthens the BMWOR.

Our meals have been deliberately held atLevin, Foxton, Ashhurst, Marton,Palmerston North, Hunterville andWanganui. This shares the travelamongst our widespread membership.Rides have generally started at 10 00 am,and invariably include a great deal ofchatter at the lunch stop. Only one ridewas postponed due to unsatisfactory, and unsafe, weather conditions. That ridehas been rescheduled in 2015.

All of our events are scheduled sixmonths in advance, and our 2015calendar is already drafted to June 2015.

The BMWOR held an Area Rep gatheringduring the year. The idea of regularlygathering Area reps together is highlycommended. They will be even morevalued as the programme, purpose andexpectations of attendees is refined. Theability of the Register to remain a strongand connected motorcycle groupdemands of itself full attendance from allareas, and for every area to have anenthusiastic and focussed AreaRepresentative.

My role as Area rep comes to an end on 1March 2015. The new rep will inherit a

stable and structured infrastructure, withevents planned to June 2015, and allobligations for the March Newsletter met.Of course I remain a loyal adherent of theRegister so they are assured of asympathetic ear nearby. My sincerethanks are extended to the RangitikeiArea membership for all of their supportand tolerance throughout the past coupleof years. Remain strong and grow.

Wellington

Following my ceasing paid employmentin July, I’ve spent almost four months ofthis year in Australia. Initially touring inVictoria and South Australia in July &August aboard a DR650 and latterlybeing with my wife here in Melbourne asshe gives support to her daughter whohas just given birth to her third child.

I took on a ‘Coordination’ role in Februarywhen no one else was willing to comeforward as Area Representative.

From my perspective, there have been anumber of enjoyable rides, riding withRegister members and their friends thisyear:

• In March I organised a Saturday Rideto Pohongina Valley with an ascent into the Ruahines via Takapari Road. This attracted several GS ridingmembers who would not normallyattend Register rides. Also we werejoined by several Register membersfrom the Rangitikei

• In April, Dave Morris convened a rideto Pureora Forest - with the objectiveof enabling those hardy camperswho took part to enjoy the bird songof a dawn chorus.

• This was a great event - albeitattended by only a few includingHawkes Bay ‘Coordinator’ - Wutsie.President Tibsy impressed us all withhis hard man act of sleeping beneatha ‘fly’ - the rest of us favouring tents.

• The Pureora Forest trip was aprecursor to riding on to the everpopular Rag Rally held at TaylorMemorial Lodge - for those thatwent, the Rag Rally was its usualsuccess

• Together with Selwyn Meaclem, Ijoined with Back Road Riders led byNeil Wood formerly of the Register toride Fisher’s Track and the 42Traverse. Selwyn bravely and ablypiloted his 1150 GS Adventurethrough these tracks - no small feat.Myself, I was not game to take my1200GS on these two tracks optinginstead for the lighter weight of myDR650, even then I was grateful forthe assistance of younger oneshelping to make it up the steepestrock face encountered as you exit astream crossing.

• May saw a number of hardy soulsventure out on another Saturday ride,a Ride to Tui Brewery at

Mangaintinoka - complete withtasting and brewery tour - anotherevent where Hawkes Bay memberswere able to join us should they wish- Folker took up the offer. This rideincluded some excellent gravelbetween Mauriceville andEketahuna. It was great to seeseveral members who we would notnormally see on Register Rides - folkwith a passion for sports bikesaboard BMW S1000RR’s andDucatis - (no they didn’t join us onthe gravel sections).

• July saw a small group travel fromMana to the Short Straw Cafe inWhiteman’s Valley for lunch

• August September and October sawrides organised and led by others - Iacknowledge Dave Oldershaw hereespecially along with others I’munaware of who stepped forward tolend a hand.

• In November I organised anovernighter to Whangamomona -catering for folks whose tastesinclude a preference for sealed roadsand those who prefer gravel. Wetravelled together from Wellington viaJerusalem and Pipiriki in theWhanganui National Park (the RiverRoad is now fully sealed) on to Ratehifor a late lunch and out on theForgotten World Highway toWhangamomona. On the Sundayseveral of us opted to return via Kiwiand Moki roads (gravel) whilst otherreturned via sealed roads

Other popular tried and true ridedestinations throughout the year haveincluded

• Castle point

• Lake Ferry Pub

• Gladstone Pub

• Wild Oats Cafe, Carterton

An innovation initiated by Peter Nash hasseen the launch of an email list of thosemembers (and potentially their friends)with the latitude to venture out for a ridemid week. Peter has initiated several ofthese. In October, I joined him andseveral others on a ride up the PohonginaValley out of Ashhurst and on to Apitireturning to Kimbolton for lunch. I was abit naughty in that I left the ‘tar babies’and took a large gravel loop rejoiningthem at Apiti.

• Monthly Social Evenings at thePetone Working Men’s Club havebeen supported by a core group ofmembers who clearly enjoy thesocial aspect of these meetings. There has been a range ofinteresting speakers. Special thankshere to those members who haveaccepted a ‘speaking’ slot andPresident Tibsy who has organisedseveral guest speakers throughoutthe year.

• I’m stepping aside from the

Page 19: newsletter - BMWMC · the Area Rep (details on rear cover) or ride organiser (if noted) for assistance. On most rides there is a rider briefing 5 minutes prior to departure, at which

temporary Coordinator role I took onearly last year and am to be replacedby a willing member who hasgenerously agreed to formallybecoming the Wellington AreaRepresentative. I’d hope to providesome assistance to that member inorganising rides - especially those to‘roads less travelled’

• A huge debt of thanks to NationalSecretary Dave Oldershaw who hascheerfully picked up the ‘baton’ ofevent organisation / notification whenI’ve been absent overseas. Also,President Tibsy for his ‘leading fromthe front’ in attempting to ensure thatthe Wellington Branch of the ‘OR’, ashe fondly refers to it, remains vibrantand attractive to existing andprospective members

Nelson

We had an exciting start to 2014, with atotal success in the Rally and inauguralcombined AGM.

Briefly, to remember and a few highlightsabout the rally, firstly it was well attended. We met a lot of good friends from all overthe country. None other than Dale, aNelson rider on his non-GS, won theGymkhana award. This broke theemerging trend of GS bikes dominatingthe field.

Both Sue and I are very grateful for thesupport we received from local riders andfrom other parts of the country to makethe rally a success.

As for the rest of the year it just followedon in the same direction as the rally. Verygood turnouts at each ride, no majormishaps in fact no mishaps except acouple of riders getting a ticket or two forminor speeding charges.

As far as the rides were concerned duringthe year, I am not going to elaborate thenames or the places we travelled throughas these were in the monthly reports, butwe had fantastic rides both locally andfurther afield.

We managed to grow the club a little witha couple of new members joining. Ibelieve this occurs through our relaxedattitude to what bikes riders turn up onand whether or not they are members. We have a large group of riders whoreceive emails of planned rides etc.Through them joining members on rides, they have decided to join the Register.

We would also like to acknowledge PeterTibb’s support in this approach.

For me personally I did the longest dirtride on a motorbike since 1967, mainlylistening to other local riders like Tony,Nigel, Peter and Mathias about howmuch fun they have off road. Since thepurchase of a GS both Sue I are lookingforward to more gravel rides.

We do have some issues with the lack ofmaintenance and servicing facilities inNelson. I have had discussions with the

President and the BMW dealership inAuckland but it seems that at present itbelongs in the too hard basket. Severalowners of BMW bikes have contacted us(some not even members) about thisproblem and we hope it will be sorted outsoon.

Looking forward, I wish the Wanganuimembers a huge success for the rally. Wehave several Nelson riders attending.

We wish you all a very prosperous andsafe New Year.

Revti and Sue

Otago/Southland

There were a series of relatively low keyweekend ride-ins during last summer andautumn. The Otago Museum motorcycleexhibition, Clyde, Kaka Point andLawrence spring to mind, and I'm notsure that list is exhaustive. We alsoexperimented with post-work "thirdThursday" brief evening rides in Dunedin, but I think it's fair to say they've beentried. With the large size of the area theywere only ever going to be an option for aminority, and early evening coincideswith relatively heavy traffic on theinteresting roads around the city.

This spring and summer has so far got offto a slow start, both in terms of weatherand rides. Organising effort that wasavailable mostly went into the recentSouth Island RAG Rally, which was wellattended by Otago/Southland and othermembers. Yesterday I was at the Levelswatching some fine classic motorcycleracing, in an attempt to hook up acontingent from the south with someCanterbury folks. It was an opportunity tocheer on one of our members as hecampaigned a Manx Norton and 350Gold Star, although he's sometimes seenon a BMW S1000RR.

Upcoming plans are for a pre-Christmasride down into the Catlin's, repeats of theClyde, Kaka Point and Lawrence rides inthe new year, and an Otago Peninsulawander timed to allow the out of townfolks to ride to Dunedin and meet upbefore heading out for lunch. And someother destinations that might spring tomind or be suggested.

Andy Hutcheon,

Non Executive ReportsWeb Admin

After carrying out the role for a number ofyears, I have now been replaced. ArneRohde has volunteered for the position. His slotting in to the role was in factdelayed for some months while decisionswere made about the future role of theWeb Administrator. That was eventuallyresolved as sticking with what has been.Bold initiatives had been proposed toenhance the website to attract moretraffic, but help required to facilitate thatwas not forthcoming: people leadincreasingly busy lives running hard tostand still in our brave new world, whohas time for extras?

Arne is a real computer man: he had alook at what I was doing and made acouple of suggestions that I took up –stuff I should have worked out for myselfyears ago. His aim is to get the computerto do the work, whereas in my ignorancejust getting things to happen “somehow”has been sufficient.

Far more importantly, Arne is still a BMWmotorsickle owner, and retains aninterest in the marque that I can nolonger pretend to. I think that is veryimportant to the Register, that your WebAdmin is being done by one of your owncohort.

I will remain in the wings as Arne’sbackup person for when he wants/needsa break. I know what a pain in the butt it ishaving to be tethered to a Netbookwhenever I leave home for a couple ofdays. I’m very happy to spare him that. The space in the luggage I’ve kept for myNetbook I can now put my handski in. Ican strap my fins on the outside if needsbe and revert to Body-Surfer-Bwucie, notBwucie-da-Geek.

Bruce Crowther.

Regalia

Sales were steady early in the year buthave slowed since September.

Total Sales for the year were $541.00,offset by the writing off of $281.00 dueto the Time Expiry of some items in theFirst Aid Kits, this along with postagecosts of $19.50 meant an income of$240.50 for the year.

Attendance at the Hot August Nightgathering netted $206.00 which was aworthwhile exercise.

There are a number of “old stock” items,Polo Shirts and Fluro vests that I intendto sell cheap at the Rally in Whanganui tomove them on.

I will have the full range of regalia Itemsfor sale at the Rally, terms of sale beingCash only.

Comment:

This budget is purely concerned with the Operating Income andExpenditure and does not take into account any 'Event'transactions. Events should be self funding and any resultantshortfall/surplus will be reflected in the funds held in the EventA/c. Budget shows a deficit of $1.8k which is consistant withthe usual 2 yearly cycle (i.e. Tour Guide years). To cover this weare holding $5k more on TD than at this time last year.
