As our term continues to progress I find myself excitedly anticipating our community
‘Colour Fun’ event, being held next Friday afternoon. This event has been two years
in the planning, with Mrs Hoile and myself working with a small committee last year to
begin the planning. This has evolved over the course of this year, with the assistance
of our ‘Family, Friends and Staff committee’. As we draw closer to the event, we are
working collaboratively with our Governing Council, staff and parent helpers to
finalise details. We have also had wonderful community support for the event and
raffle. We have publicised our business supporters on our Facebook page, and will
acknowledge them again in our next newsletter. Next Friday should result in a
wonderful community celebration and we hope to see many students and families
participating.
As we move through the term, we are beginning our planning for 2019, in particular
around class numbers and configurations. To assist our preparation, I would like to
request that any families who will not be attending Loxton Primary School in 2019,
please notify me. Likewise, if any one knows of possible new enrolments for next year,
please encourage them to book a time to meet with me for a tour / enrolment
meeting. Please notify of families leaving or make bookings for school tours through
our Front Office staff.
With the warmer weather and the work of our students, the school garden continues
to flourish. Please remember that we have fresh vegies from the garden regularly for
sale in the front office. We currently also have a variety of seedlings for sale. Planting
a vegie garden at home makes a fantastic weekend family activity in this mild spring
weather. Gardening also provides a good opportunity for conversation in regards to
learning from our garden and cooking lessons.
Our Year 7 students have been out and about today exploring the town on a
‘German History’ tour. This has seen them visiting some significant locations around
the town.
Today we also celebrated our JP Grandparents and Special people. This provides a
wonderful opportunity for our students to invite their special people in to share their
school experience. We were overwhelmed to see so many people in attendance
today and we are very grateful for the support it receives from our families and
community. We were able to finish our celebration with an amazing morning tea.
Thank you to everyone who supported this event and made it possible.
Once again I marvel at our school and community and think what a privilege it is to
be part of it. Don’t forget to bring your raffle books back and pop in to the office to
purchase your ‘Colour Fun’ tickets, if you haven’t already. We look forward to seeing
you there.

Students from our school will be soon undertaking an
educational tour of our national capital.
Students will be given the opportunity to participate in
a variety of educational programs with a focus on
Australia’s history, culture, heritage and
democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the
importance of all young Australians being able to visit
the national capital as part of their Civics and
Citizenship Education. To assist families in meeting
the cost of the excursion the Australian
Government is contributing funding of $30.00 per
student under the Parliament and Civics Education
Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is
paid directly to the school upon completion of the
excursion.
We thank the Australian Government for this
rebate, which has already been deducted from the
camp costs charged to parents.

On Tuesday 28th August Reception Voigt travelled
to the Chaffey Theatre to watch the live
performance of The Very Cranky Bear.
• I loved listening to the music played in the
Jingle, Jangle, Jungle. - Isobel Miller
• I enjoyed eating lunch at the park and playing
on the playground. - Levi Ashton
• My favourite part was when the sheep and the
bear danced together at the end of the show. -
Isla Walkington
• I loved going on the bus with Mr Kruger. -
Jarvis Biele
A big thank you to Mr Kruger, Mrs Raynes and Mrs
Schwarz for accompanying us to the performance.
Have you ever had a child who was obsessed with a
particular activity or thing? Maybe, they will only
take the same sort of sandwich everyday to school.
Maybe, they will only watch the same DVD on
repeat. Maybe they can't put their book series down.
Maybe there is a video game which they are always
getting drawn back to. No matter what the interests
are in your family there are likely to be things which
if not kept in check, could get out of kilter.
In our family we speak often about keeping things in
balance. A bit like the old fashioned scales which are
used to represent justice. No matter how good a
thing is, the old saying remains true: "too much of a
good thing can become a bad thing". Even
something like exercising (which apparently I should
do a lot more of!) can become an obsession and get
in the way of other healthy activities. Some creative
pursuits, although fun and healthy, can become so
brain consuming that it is difficult to move onto
other things which need to be completed.
As adults we can often recognise when there are
areas of our life which need to be trimmed or put
back into balance. However, children are very much
on the early stages of this learning journey and will
need parental guidance. Recently, I have heard a
number of people talking about a 60 minutes article
featuring the game Fortnite. I have heard people
raising concerns about whether this video game is
violent and also asking if it is addictive. I have since
watched the 60 minutes episode as well as listened
to a radio interview and a pod cast on this topic with
Dr Justin Coulson, who is a Psychologist specialising
in family relationships.
In the 60 minutes article, the focus was more on the
addiction that these boys had to the game Fortnite,
rather than any particular concerns about that
game. It is worth remembering that although
Fortnite and other video games might be the
concern at present, there are many other things that
can also cause imbalance in life. Having said this,
Dr Coulson warns that there is evidence that some
video games are created to encourage the user to
become addicted. As parents we need to help our
children to maintain a healthy balance in the midst
of the many distractions they will encounter in their
life.
Keeping things in balance is a difficult but necessary
role for us as parents and caregivers. We need to
keep these conversations open with our children and
we need to start them early. That way our children
will understand the importance of balance and will
not be taken by surprise by sudden boundaries.
In my next newsletter article I will write more about
things to consider when navigating this difficult area
of discipline in your family.
Until then, may you be Blessed

STEM SPECTACULAR As STEM Ambassadors for Loxton Primary, one aspect of our role has
been to represent Loxton Primary in STEM. We also organsied a ‘STEM
SPECTACULAR’ day for Loxton Primary and Kingston On Murray
students.
The purpose of our ‘STEM SPECTACULAR’ was to help people get more
involved, understand and learn more about STEM and to help students
with possible future career choices. We planned and organised our
day with help from Miss Cass.
We held our STEM day on August 22nd. Some of the activities were a
presentation by ‘SciWorld’, that was about liquid nitrogen. This was
really incredible and enjoyed by all students. The other activities were
making balloon cars in teams and racing them, building the tallest
tower, creating a pop-stick bridge to hold the most weight and
building a castle.
Overall the day was heaps of fun. Students had a great day and
accomplished a lot. The nitrogen show was incredible and everyone
thoroughly enjoyed the day.

HOTSHOTS TENNIS "On Thursday 30th of August a group of 18
Year 3 and 4 students went to the Hotshots
tennis competition at the Loxton Tennis
Courts. We had two teams of 9 students called
the Supercats and the Tigers. The Tigers team
did well and finished the day 5th, while the
Supercats came 10th out of 13
teams. Unfortunately it was a very windy day,
so it was tough going and it was called off early
before we had the chance to finish all the
matches, but we had lots of fun."
