Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, Staff and Students,

Term 2 has commenced

students. Despite the challenges that our new school environment brings, I am pleased to share with you

students attending school, however, if the current situation in WA with COVID-19 continues, this number is expected to grow over the coming days.

Learning from Home For our students learning from home, the online Connect Classroom platform was launched, with families using this resource to support their child’s learning. Our teachers have appreciated the positive feedback from parents (and the students) as they engage in the learning activities provided. A reminder to parents

that queries should be directed to teachers as your first point of call. This can occur through Connect Classroom itself or using email. Some classes also use Dojo for home school messaging and therefore, please use the mechanism that works best for you.

I am also available to support parents and encourage you to ask the questions and we will do our best to find the answers.

New learning content in Connect Classroom will be released weekly (fortnightly for Kindergarten and Pre-primary). Class teachers will be given some additional time each week to assist them in managing the workload around preparing two forms of content delivery, however parents should be aware that the complexities around managing these requirements may mean that your child’s teacher may take some time to respond to your communication. Class teachers will also be communicating with families learning from home each week through a range of mechanisms including email and the Connect Classroom platform. They are also happy to speak with you on the phone, so please contact the teacher or school office if you would like this to occur.

Learning at School My sincere thank you to families for your support of the new procedures that are in place at West Leeming. These constraints are very different to the way this school currently operates and on behalf of the staff and the leadership team, thank you for ensuring the first few days of term 2 were as easy as they could be.

Start of day procedures All students will continue to enter from the administration entrance of the school only. Parents and carers are not permitted to enter the school grounds. Please deliver your children to the front of the school

through the Kiss and Drive facility or by walking them to the grassed area at the school’s entrance. Children who ride bikes to school will also enter through the administration and walk their bikes through the school to the

bike racks. The school gates (administration entrance only) will be opened for students to enter the school from the following times:

Gates are closed at 8.55am. If your child is late to school, please ring the school office if a staff member is not present to open the gates.

End of day procedures: Years 1-6 Three gates are opened at the end of the school day so that the congestion that occurs with students leaving at the same

time can be managed. The following three gates will be opened at 3.05pm:

Administration Oval Community Hall

Once again, parents and carers are not permitted to enter the school grounds.

End of day procedures: Kindergarten and Pre-primary Students in Pre-primary and Kindergarten will be dismissed from the grassed area at the front of the school by staff at the

following times: Kindergarten 2.50pm Pre-primary 3.05pm

Parents and carers are not permitted to enter the gates into the early childhood area.

LEARNING FROM HOME – CONNECT CLASSROOM We are aware that many parents are unsure what to expect when it comes to students learning from home. As a school, teachers have been working hard to establish their Connect classrooms and they are mindful that there will be varying circumstances in the home. So whilst they are planning, they are also keeping in mind:

Families may only have one electronic device Not all households have printers Some children will be working on tablets and others

computers A lot of parents will be working from home so lessons

should be directed at the students as much as possible.

Furthermore, we are cognisant that children will not get the same amount of work from home that they would in a school

our expectations for the approximate times of:

K/PP: 45 minutes a day of English and Mathematics activities and mini projects/activities across other learning areas that can be done over time;

Year 1-6: 1 hour a day of English and Mathematics activities and mini projects/activities across other learning areas that can be done over time.

resources provided or that you stick rigidly to the suggested times. The lessons will contain videos but not live streaming

at times which best suit them and where devices can be shared.

MUSIC BUZZ WEEK 1 TERM 2

To all the wonderful students of West Leeming PS:

Connect this term so look for the MUSIC content button and keep up your musical learning. There will be songs, rhythm and beat activities, note name and value games, work to be done if possible, and wonderful websites to visit. There is a Whole of School song already on Connect that we would

together again. It’s When the Lights All Shine and we know that some of you have already been learning it.

At this stage, instrumental lessons will begin in Week 2 but not the ensembles, so students need to keep the practice up and be ready to go. Online sessions for those not at school will be arranged via the instrumental teacher. Choir, String Ensemble, Rhythm Percussion Group and Band students just need to practice singing, playing rhythm patterns and learning note names. We will let parents know when the ensembles will begin again.

Looking forward to a great term 2 in the music and remember-

Keep the music playing, Mrs Mathie and Ms Hall Music Specialists

Every child will still have the opportunity to access their Book Club catalogue. The same carefully selected, best-value books will still be available, so the

enjoyment Book Club is known for will not change!

We ask that you continue to work with us to maintain our unique distribution

costs back into offering the best prices and the best selection of books!

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently.

Doing things differently does not change our goal, that goal is more important than ever!
