Even though the leaves haven’t yet fallen off the trees, plans for next year’s Netley Marsh Carnival are well under
way. The date will be Saturday 18th June and the theme will be “Festivals”. Whilst the Carnival procession will follow its usual format we are planning to make the Church Fayre a little different with more opportunities for local people and
groups to get involved. Look out for more info in the next “Outlook”. Following its success this year the fun will again
continue into the evening with a Barn Dance.
If you are interested in helping with the carnival or fayre please contact Ian Sims on 07811964725, and make sure you
put this date in your new diary when Santa brings it.

Parish Council News
After a number of years serving on the Parish Council, Natalie Noke has resigned due to pressure of other commitments. We would like to thank Natalie for her help and support, and wish her all the best in the future. However, we’re glad to report that she will continue in her role as a School Governor, and will also remain involved in the production of our Parish Newsletter.
This month we are pleased to welcome two co-opted Councillors, Councillor Michelle Cain, and Councillor Terri Stromeyer. We hope that they will find their time on the Parish Council worthwhile and enjoyable.
It only remains to wish all our readers A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ‘The Outlook’ will be back in the Spring 2011.

The Annual Cricket Match vs St.Matthew’s Church & Bartley Cricket Club—June 2010
Bartley Cricket Ground, nestling in the tranquillity of Buskett’s Enclosure, was bathed in brilliant summer sunshine for
the 17th encounter of this historic local fixture.
The teams assembled with the usual mix of anticipation and fun, and the coin was spun and the game began. Bartley
elected to bat and were soon on the back foot with some devious leg spin, tempting half trackers, and the odd
unplayable delivery trimming the pitch just nicely. St.Matthew’s bowlers to a man – as well as a boy – bowled tightly
and with some success. The Bartley total of 88 from 18 overs was
enough just to make the church team believe history could be made.
Once again the Bartley bowlers looked to have done enough to
dowse any lingering dreams of a first church win, but just as hope
was dwindling an innings or two lower down the order sneaked St.
Matthew’s past the target total with a couple of balls to spare.
For the first time in the history of this particular fixture the ancient
Suffolk bat (the trophy for this game) – presented by Mr and Mrs
Pringle all those years ago to the winning team – has finally returned
to its home – it hangs proudly in the Church Room… but for how
long we hear the question. The date is already set for the 2011
encounter : Monday 27th June 6.00pm – same glorious place as
always.
Thanks go to both teams who make this such a memorable occasion.

The giving of gifts can be raucous, thrilling and bursting with excitement – all rolled into one! “What can it
be...?”… “Is it what I hoped for..?” “Are the parcels labelled correctly..?!”
The brightly coloured wrapping paper, the tinsel and decorative bows all add to the unfolding drama, and with the
presents simply sitting there under the tree the anticipation can reach fever pitch. Christmas – it’s just once a year –
perhaps this is a good thing, the body probably couldn’t take it any more frequently!
The thrill of the season is most keenly felt and experienced in our churches. The weeks preceding the celebration
are given over to Advent – where the church is dressed in purple and no flowers adorn the pedestals. No Christmas
carols are sung in this season – but we are reminded to give time to penitence and self reflection as we prepare for
the night of Christmas Eve. Also during Advent we are encouraged in Church to slow down, to tread
more gently so that – come the season – we are ready in heart, body and soul to celebrate. So on
Christmas night the carols are sung, the lights sparkle and the candles flicker – Christmas is upon us.
Christmas is the celebration of the gift of God Himself to the world. God given in Jesus. This is truly
thrilling. The God in whom we all have had our beginning and the God in which we all will have our
end – has come to us as a baby, born in a manger, worshipped by ordinary shepherds just down from
the hills. It’s this we celebrate… and my, oh my – this is thrilling beyond belief.

NETLEY MARSH INFANT SCHOOL
It’s hard to believe that the children have already been back at school for half a term and it’s been a busy autumn period for our three classes.
If you need to learn anything about bread and how it’s made, then ask anyone from Reed Buntings! They have enjoyed learning of how the grains are transformed into flour and then bread. They visited a local garden to collect apples, followed by a cooking session which transformed the apples into apple crumble.
The Kingfishers have been looking at the fruits of the earth through Art and the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, creating some masterpieces of their own.
The Ospreys are coming to an end to the Forest Schools Project. It’s been a fantastic experience for the three schools in our federation where they’ve learned new skills and made new friendships. As a result we’ve seen some wonderful writing on the rainforest.
The federation of the three schools is now well established coming under the banner of “The Oaks CE Learning Federation” and plans for a suitable logo are well underway.
PPPParish Plan arish Plan arish Plan arish Plan –––– Update and onwards! Update and onwards! Update and onwards! Update and onwards!
All parishioners and business should have by now received a copy of the Parish Plan and if you have not call 023 8081
3118 and let me know). I hope you have enjoyed reading it.
The plan was launched on 11 September at St Matthews Hall. In addition to collecting their copies of the Parish Plan,
residents had the opportunity to meet the various community groups and charities that exist in the Parish, including the
Scouts, Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show, Probus and the Woodlands Gardening Club. In addition, staff from
Netley Marsh Infants and Woodlands Pre Schools attended and we also had exhibitions from Tools for Self Reliance
and Testwood Lakes. Entertainment was provided by members of the Gamekeeper Music Sessions and refreshments
provided by Lyn Loades and Caz Littleton-Gray.
New Forest East MP, Dr Julian Lewis (pictured left) and Bob Giddings (right),
Chairman of Netley Marsh Parish Council, gave speeches about the value of local
community and Dr Lewis was particularly impressed with the Plan document itself.
The launch was enjoyed by all who attended.
Now I expect that there will be some who might say, the plan doesn’t mention the
value of local community, or no-one seems concerned about that. The plan was
based on the 25% of questionnaires that were returned, questionnaires having been
sent to every household and business in the Parish. The committee was made up of
volunteers who went to great lengths to accurately reflect the views expressed.
However, a plan has been formulated and it is now time to implement it. This means getting more volunteers to help
achieve the various tasks identified in the Action Plan at the rear of the Parish Plan document. It is time for the current
committee to disband and make way for people who will achieve the Action Plan goals. For this purpose it is proposed
to hold a public meeting for all people who have already volunteered their time and also to enable others the chance to
volunteer who did not attend the launch. A notice is printed in the Outlook.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank more than a few people who have contributed to the plan. Firstly, the
volunteers on the committee and particularly Brian Loades, the steering committee Treasurer, and secondly Gifford,
who have provided meeting facilities for the committee. They also did all our printing for both surveys at a time when
we had no funding. I can without any doubt say
that without Gifford’s logistical support this Plan
would not have got going. Gifford also print the
parish newsletter as a service to the local
community, and their community spirit is greatly
appreciated. Also the District and Parish
Councils who have provided funding for the
project and to Councillors Mans, Tipp and
Puttock for dipping into their discretionary funds.
The project wouldn’t have got where is it without
some guidance from people who actually know
what they are doing and I’d like to thank Penny
Velander and her team from New Forest District Council, for all the assistance they provided. Finally, I’d like to thank
Keith Godwin, who spent a lot of his spare time converting, manipulating and checking text and photos.

ST MATTHEW’S CHURCH RESTORATION PROJECT
To alleviate the rising damp problems in the Church, we have completed a drainage trench and the laying of pipes along
the north side of the church into which the rainwater from the north side roof and the surface water from the land behind
the church can now be channelled. In the past couple of weeks we have had the entire roof guttering either replaced or
re furbished and an extra down pipe fitted. We now need to excavate a further trench down the East side of the Church
and lay pipes all the way down to the Car Park where a large soak away will be installed after connecting the down
pipes from the roof guttering on the south side of the Church.
The stonework around the West Window is urgently in need of repair. We have accepted a Quote
for this work and are just waiting for permission from the Diocese to proceed. All the above work is
being supervised and agreed by our Church Architect Mr Tim Sage.
If anyone would be kind enough to volunteer to help with the digging of the trench then please contact either myself on 02380 870648, the Reverend John Reeve on 02380 80663267, or any
member of the Church.
Malcolm Bonning, Church Warden

Parish Plan—Parishioners’ views
We’d like to thank Richard and Phyllis Barrett of Woodlands Road, who have written to
express their views following the launch of the Parish Plan:
‘Phyllis and I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to all of those involved in the construction of the Netley Marsh parish plan. We just wish that more parish-ioners would have responded to their questionnaire, the lack of replies was disappointing, as was the number who bothered to pick up the plan on the launch day. However, the plan was beautifully produced and a number of very succinct comments were observed by us and duly noted! We do hope that a little more enthusiasm for the future will follow!
With thanks and all credit to those who worked so hard and for so long to produce the parish plan.
Yours in anticipation of a ‘furtherance of the cause’ Phyllis & Richard Barrett Woodlands Road residents
PS Perhaps it would be appropriate to have a ‘follow up’ meeting of parish-ioners to see if there any are interested in coming forward with ideas and proposing them to the working group?’
… No sooner said than done– don’t miss important information below!
A public meeting is to be held on 30th November 2010 at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Road,
Netley Marsh, at 7.30 pm for the purposes of accepting volunteers to
progress the Netley Marsh Action Plan. ALL WELCOME

WEDDING FAYREWEDDING FAYRE
A Wedding Fayre is to be
held in St Matthew’s church,
Netley Marsh
on Sunday March 20th 2011
from 2pm – 5pm.
OOOOnce upon a time, somewhere in deepest Woodlands ...nce upon a time, somewhere in deepest Woodlands ...nce upon a time, somewhere in deepest Woodlands ...nce upon a time, somewhere in deepest Woodlands ...
… digging began to create six raised garden beds for the children of Woodlands Pre-school
to cultivate. The Pre-school was able to purchase gardening tools sized just right for little
hands from donations received, and seeds from the Morrison’s ‘Lets Grow’ scheme and so,
back in April, the youngsters set to work.
They planted strawberries, tomatoes, beans, courgettes, and herbs,
to name just a few, and they nurtured them through the summer
term. They watered them using water collected in our water butt,
learned about making compost from the weeds and fruit peelings
from their snack time and, of course, enjoyed eating their grown
efforts.
This term the children are planting daffodils, and collecting and drying the sunflower seeds
to feed the birds over the winter. Next year they are going to grow apples in addition and if
the Pre-school can collect enough vouchers, they would like to purchase a wormery or a little
plastic greenhouse.
The children have thoroughly loved tending to the allotment and the Preschool would like to
thank the Parish Council for use of this plot for such a fun, exciting and educational
opportunity. We would also like to thank the Gardening Club for their support – and
plants! – and to all the Preschool parents and neighbours for their help and donations.
NETLEYMARSH NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH BBQ
The neighbourhood watch held it’s first summer BBQ in July this year. Lavinia Newman, Treasurer of the Watch, came up with the idea after a successful Christmas drinks event in December.
Around forty-five members attended on the beautiful, warm, summer evening at the local Community Hall in Woodlands Road.
Steve Thomas, chairman welcomed the members and Steve’s wife Pam excelled herself yet again in the kitchen, while Allan Mechen manned the BBQ keeping hungry
neighbours full to the brim with sausages and burgers. Other committee members, Jan Walker, Marion Mechen and Annie Vincent ensured that everybody had sufficient
wine and beer to wash down the treats hot off the BBQ.
Thanks to those who attended a great evening shared by neighbours. A good time was had by all and many new acquaintances were made at this neighbourly event.

PPPPetsetsetsets————What not to eat at Christmas!!What not to eat at Christmas!!What not to eat at Christmas!!What not to eat at Christmas!! At Christmas it is tempting to feed our pets rich and unusual food scraps but too much will cause stom-ach upsets, so do avoid giving them foods high in fat, sugar and salt. The main dangers are:
♥ Chocolate poisoning, potentially fatal, even if relatively small amounts! If you suspect that your dog has eaten ANY chocolate, please contact your vet immediately for advice.
♥ Grapes, sultanas and raisins, so Christmas cake and mince pies are off the list too.
♥ A chicken or turkey carcass may be an easy source of sharp bones for a peckish dog or cat so please avoid leaving food where pets can find it.
♥ Less obvious, but tinsel, toys and glass baubles can be potentially lethal if animals swallow them.
Finally although not food related, take great care your dog or cat does not lick up any spilt antifreeze during winter - this is very dangerous.
Please remember your animal’s health will benefit far more if they are not given any festive food.
