Some of ABATE’s accomplishments over the years:

• Successfully lobbied for legislation that created the Georgia Motor-

cycle Safety Program (GMSP), our state’s rider education program that is available to all.

• Lobbied to have legislation passed to modify the existing manda-

tory helmet law to allow adults age 21 and older freedom of choice as to the wearing of a helmet.

• Successfully lobbied for legislation leading to the repeal of the

Georgia law prohibiting use of speakers or headphones while riding a motorcycle.

• Fought and stopped legislation introduced in the 1992 Session of

the Georgia General Assembly that would have made it illegal for kids age 10 and under to ride as passengers on motorcycles.

• Established May as “Motorcycle Awareness and You” month

through a proclamation signed by the Governor and through resolutions passed by the Senate and House each year. This is an annual effort that raises public awareness of motorcycles.

• Successfully lobbied legislators to approve increased funding for

the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program, in the amount of $170,000 after the license tag rate was raised on all vehicles to $20.

• Successfully stopped proposed legislation that would have in-

creased the size of motorcycle tags.

• Successfully lobbied for handicapped tags for motorcycles without

further enabling legislation, by bringing it to the attention of the Department of Revenue that the code section was written in such a way that it was already authorized.

• Successfully lobbied for antique tags for motorcycles in the 1998

legislative session.

• Established a 15 District organization that has led to more partici-

pation locally, while raising our membership statewide. The more members we have, means the more clout we have at the State Capitol.

• Sponsor and promote the largest Swap Meet/Bike Show in Geor-

gia, 5 times a year.

• Successfully forced prosecution of a trucker who, while making an

illegal turn, killed fellow motorcyclist Mark Bonner.

• Successfully lobbied to pass the “Frank-Lee” (ROW) bill to enhance

penalties to those who cause death or serious injury to a motorcy-clists by failing to yield the right of way.

• Successfully lobbied to pass the “Tag/Title” bill SB-437 that allows

for registration of kit/assembled bikes. Signed by Governor Purdue May 14, 2008.

• Successfully lobbied to pass “Enhanced Penalties for Right of Way

Violations” SB-196. Signed into law in 2009. WHAT IS

ABATE OF GEORGIA, Inc.?

The letters “ABATE” stand for American Bikers Active Toward Education. ABATE is composed of motorcyclists from all ar-eas of the state, from all walks of life, and who ride all makes of bikes. ABATE is not a club, it is a non-partisan politi-cally active organization working on mo-torcyclist’s rights. We are affiliated with national rights groups like the Ameri-can Motorcyclist Association (AMA), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). Our main focus is to keep motorcy-cle legislation in its proper perspec-tive. Many restrictive laws are enacted by uninformed legislators. ABATE’s goal is to keep our lawmakers informed of our members collective position on Motorcyc le re l a ted leg i s l a t ion. Preventing unfair legislation from be-coming law is easier than fighting to get the law repealed. Rider education and public aware-ness of motorcyclists are goals of ABATE. We are not against the wear-ing of helmets, and we encourage all riders to ride safely. An informed and educated rider is a safer rider. Helmet laws do nothing to prevent an accident, and a helmet only provides the illusion of safety, while rider education is proven to prevent accidents and save lives.

Dan Forrest, Your State Director Summer is fast approaching and the riding season is well underway. Your Executive Board has been busy setting into motion several changes that will pave the way for a stronger A.B.A.T.E. of Georgia. The advisory board had approved the addition of an Ex-ecutive board seat for Education Director. Dr. Sue Duggan has been appointed to that po-sition. She will work to provide to public and private schools the tools needed to make students aware of motorcycles. She will develop plans to work with law enforcement agencies in distributing programs geared to educating citizens about the issues of awareness. The Advisory Board has also approved 3 at large positions for Regional Directors. The appointees for these positions are Northern Regional Director, David Norman. Central Regional Director, Ricky Jordan. Southern Regional Director, Jerry McDaniel. These individuals will work closely with the Districts and Chapters in their areas on behalf of the state office. Their duties will include assisting with events, dealing with membership issues, covering for the DC’s as needed and unifying the programs and mission of A.B.A.T.E. I have asked our Legislative Director to pull together various bills that we would like to have sponsored in the next legislative session. These will include Anti Discrimination and Profiling bills. We also need to look closely at the bill involving mandatory training before receiving a Motorcycle endorsement. We must also seek a way to be sure penalties are properly applied to motorists that injure or kill a motorcyclist. Summer gives us the time to meet our law makers face to face as they are back home in their districts and they are available to you. Use this time to talk to them about our needs as motorcyclists. Identify those that seem receptive to listening and working for us. Please remember to support those events that are organized by the other A.B.A.T.E. Districts when ever possible. Set up a membership table at any event in your area where you are allowed to. Sign up everyone even if not in your district we will put them in the correct one.

ABATE of Georgia, Inc. HONOR ROLL 2011

Members, Districts, Businesses & Supporters with your donation of $100 or more you become an Honor Roll Member of ABATE of Georgia! As always your generosity and support is appreciated.

I am getting ready for a long ride, 4000 miles to be exact. I am leaving Georgia on May1st and riding out to the National Coalition of Motorcy-clists Conference in Albuquerque New Mexico and traveling on to Wash-ington DC for the Bikers in the Beltway and the Motorcycle Riders Foun-dation’s Beast of the East in Baltimore May 12-15 and then back to Geor-gia. Solo. I am looking forward to traveling the road and clearing my head after a hard legislative session. A lot goes into preparing for a trip such as this. I decided to ride instead

of flying about 6 months ago and then suddenly I was 1 month out and began looking at my bike. My bike is a 94 Custom Sportster with over 100k miles. I guess for too long I have been putting band aids or should I say packing tape on her to hold her together. As I started digging deeper I found that I had to replace the tires, brakes, fork seals, windshield, gas tank etc, etc, etc, to make her road worthy. Thank goodness for friends such as Darryl Redd and the crew at Atlanta Harley-Davidson. This trip will either kill her or give her new breath. I think the trip will give both of us a new lease on life. My Sporty likes a long hard fast ride as much as I do. It has been hard to make the decisions to change her. I like my tank, even though it was scratched and devel-oped a leak. I remember each scratch and lovingly caress her as we go down the road. Each bump and bruise and scratch is a badge of honor that we both wear. My sporty doesn’t mind the grey in my hair and the wrin-kles forming around my eyes and I don’t mind her imperfections either. We are comfortable with each other. But change can be good. My bike will look better, feel better and perform better once all of the adjustments are made. My bike is a lot like ABATE. ABATE has been around a long time- since the 1970’s. ABATE is comfortable and worn and predictable but sometimes you have to make changes and you have to modify things for the good. ABATE has been glued together and band aided for too long. Changes and modifications have been put off and covered over. Sometimes we have to make adjustments and modifications to carry on and move with the changing environment. ABATE is making adjustment and changes. Changes can be hard and sometimes are unwelcome but they are needed for the overall good. We are listening to our members and the riding com-munity and addressing your concerns. We are improving our communications, we are developing new posi-tions and focusing on anticipation and being pro-active versus reactive. We are positioning ourselves for the future. If you are a current a member of ABATE we need you. We need you to help train the next generation. We need your expertise and your wisdom. Know that ABATE will be there for you as you have been there for us. Bear with us as we develop and test new strategies. Know that our mission, vision and goal remain the same which is to represent all bikers, to protect our rights and to educate the public and motorcyclists on motorcycle safety and awareness. If you are not a member- think again. ABATE is the only motorcycle rights organization in Georgia. We are here to serve you. Instead of bitching about the problems and injustices be part of the solution and join us. ABATE may never be quite the same, but like my Sporty she will be better equipped to handle the road ahead of us. Come join us on the journey.

CONGRESS ACTS TO REINFORCE BAN ON NHTSA LOB-BYING May is Motorcycle Awareness Month across the country, and Congressional lawmakers are introducing a resolution on May 2 to continue current restrictions on NHTSA that prevent the federal transportation agency from lobbying state and local governments to enact helmet laws. The lobbying ban was originally amended into the Transportation Equity Act in 1998, but U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and his House colleagues want to reinforce the prohibitions on NHTSA lobbying and focus the agency’s ef-forts on crash prevention and rider education. According to the resolution, the U.S. House of Representatives "supports efforts to retain the ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Admini-stration's ability to lobby state legislators using federal tax dollars, encourages continued growth in the motorcyclist community, and encourages owners and riders to be responsible road users." The resolution, similar to a version Sensenbrenner introduced last ses-sion, goes on to say that the House "recognizes the importance of motorcycle crash prevention as the primary source of motorcycle safety (and) encourages NHTSA to focus on motorcycle crash prevention and rider education as the most significant priorities in motorcycle safety." “KIDS JUST WANT TO RIDE” COMPANION BILL INTRO-DUCED IN U.S. SENATE U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) has introduced an amendment to exempt youth motorcycles and ATVs from the “lead law” that will effectively ban the sale of these machines. Senate Amend-ment 264 would exempt youth off highway vehicles from the overly-restrictive lead-content provisions of the Consumer Prod-uct Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008, which has deci-mated the youth motorsports industry and will ban their sale at the end of the year unless the CPSIA language is changed. Meant to protect our children from imported toys with lead-based paint, the CPSIA prohibits the making, importing, distributing or selling of any product intended for children 12 and under that contains more than a specified amount of lead in any accessible part. The unin-tended consequences were that, because some parts such as brakes and battery components contain lead, dealerships were barred from selling motorcycles and ATVs intended for young riders, as

well as replacement parts. The Klobuchar amendment is similar to H.R. 412, the Kids Just Want to Ride Act introduced in the House by Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT), and would amend S. 493, the Small Business Innovation Research Reauthorization Act. You can contact your Congressional representatives through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to urge their support. BIKERS PROTEST MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS Hundreds of motorcyclists from around Georgia rode to the Capi-tol to rev their engines in protest of a federal grant the Georgia State Patrol is using to conduct motorcycle-only checkpoints. The crowd denounced the overly-invasive and discriminatory road-blocks as unconstitutional and chanted “No more profile stops” and "Education, not checkpoints!" The protest rally came two weeks after the state patrol conducted motorcycle checkpoints on Interstates 75 and 95 during Daytona Bike Week, during which troopers stopped motorcyclists at roadblocks to check for proper paperwork, approved helmet, and properly functioning equip-ment. “The roadblocks are a violation of our rights and are a pure attempt at profiling,” said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. “Having a registration, proof of insurance and an en-dorsement on our license does make us safe. Loud pipes never killed anyone.” Georgia is the first state to conduct such check-points under a federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of a $350,000 pool of funds avail-able to as many as five law enforcement agencies nationwide to test the effectiveness of a New York State Police pilot program. Several motorcycle organizations are urging riders to call on Gov-ernor Nathan Deal to cancel the remainder of the checkpoints, which will be scheduled over the next 20 months at undisclosed locations during unannounced times. Some in Congress have also questioned NHTSA’s grant and called for Transportation Secre-tary Ray LaHood to pull the plug on future funding for motorcy-cle-only checkpoints. Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), who recently co-sponsored legislation to prohibit such grants, called the check-points “outrageously intrusive.” Indeed, many of the protesters at the March 23rd rally held signs in support of US House Resolu-tion 904 which would prevent the US DOT from providing funds to states which would be used for motorcycle roadblocks. In the meantime, motorcyclists are also awaiting a court ruling on the constitutionality of the New York checkpoints, being challenged by N.Y. Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitch Proner on behalf of his clients as well as representing the interests of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition of Motorcy-clists (NCOM). MOTORCYCLISTS COME TOGETHER FOR JAPAN The 2011 Japan Earthquake and subsequent Tsunami last month has affected the motorcycle industry in a big way, especially since Japan is home to the "Big Four" motorcycle manufacturers: Ya-maha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki. As the disaster relief efforts continue in Northeastern Japan, American motorcyclists are doing what they can to help those struggling through the cleanup and rebuilding, with U.S. motorcycle industry groups, racing series and even the American division of Japanese manufacturers raising funds in various fashions. Three U.S. powersports industry asso-ciations announced that they are joining forces to provide finan-cial assistance to the relief efforts underway in Japan. The boards and members of the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America are collectively donating $10,000 to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund,

and each organization is encouraging its members and individuals in the riding community to make their own contributions via a link on their websites (visit MIC.org, rockmoto.com, motorcy-cles.org, MSF-USA.org, SVIA.org or atvsafety.org and click on the “2011 Japan Relief Fund” tab). All donations will go to ex-perienced non-governmental disaster relief agencies in Japan that have a proven track record of emergency humanitarian relief and restoration work. To provide support to those affected by Japan’s worst natural disaster; the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami that caused widespread devastation and crip-pled nuclear power plants, the presidents of all of the U.S.-based Kawasaki entities are collecting donations from employees under their matching gift program and forwarding the contributions to the Red Cross. The Kawasaki Good Times Foundation is contrib-uting $50,000 to initiate the charitable giving campaign. Even iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has reached out to the disaster zone with a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross aid effort in Japan, and has established a link on their website to the Red Cross (www.RedCross.org) to make it easier for employees, customers and other riders to contribute. EUROPEAN STUDY YIELDS INSIGHT INTO MOTORCY-CLE ACCIDENTS European researchers discovered some interesting facts about the common causes of motorcycle accidents. The Motorcycle Acci-dents In Depth Study (MAIDS) was based on 921 motorcycle accidents, which included 103 fatalities, across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. While some of the findings were expected, others were unanticipated. Not surprisingly, the study indicates that the motorcyclists most often collided with passenger vehicles. Surprisingly or not, 70% of passenger vehicle drivers involved in accidents with motorcycles failed to perceive the mo-torcyclist. And while 73.1% of riders attempted some form of collision avoidance, 32% nonetheless experienced some form of loss of control during the maneuver. While all this may seem dis-heartening to riders, there are steps that can be taken to maximize safety; other findings from the study indicate: Over half of the accidents occurred at intersections - Although 90% of those in-volved in crashes were wearing helmets, 9% of helmeted riders lost their helmets in crashes due to improper fit, fastening or dam-age - Younger riders -- those between 18 and 25 years of age -- crashed at a higher percentage and riders aged 41 to 55 crashed less frequently - Riders wearing dark clothes were more likely to crash than others - Modified conventional street motorcycles were over-represented in crashes in the study, but engine size did not appear to be a factor - Unlicensed bikers were more likely to crash than properly licensed bikers - Weather was deemed to be a factor in only 7.5% of accidents. VIRGINIA LAUNCHES “RIDER ALERT” CARD Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) and Bon Secours Vir-ginia Health System, in partnership with Motorcycle Virginia, Inc., have launched a new program designed to save the lives of injured motorcyclists. The program provides free identification data cards that will help first responders provide rapid and accu-rate medical assistance to riders involved in accidents. Motorcy-clists who participate are provided a free Rider Alert card that contains their personal emergency contact and medical informa-tion in the event of a crash. The cards are kept inside the lining of riders' helmets and come with a 1-inch round sticker placed out-side the helmet to alert emergency responders of the card. The sticker also warns bystanders not to remove the rider's helmet,

which could prevent further injury. RAA officials say the Rider Alert card program is the first of its kind in the United States, and said that they modeled their program on an initiative in Great Britain known as "CRASH Card", developed two years ago by that country's Ambulance Motorcycle Club. On a national level, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) was founded on a similar premise over 25 years ago by California attorney Richard M. Les-ter, issuing free Emergency Medical cards to bikers across the country that are linked to a database of their important medical information and emergency contact. A.I.M. has notified ambu-lance companies and first responders across the country to look for the yellow A.I.M. Card in a downed rider’s wallet. “We ap-plaud Virginia’s Rider Alert program and can appreciate their organizers’ level of commitment to implement such a life-saving project,” said Lester, whose A.I.M. program also networks with biker attorneys in every state to represent the interests of injured motorcyclists. “When a rider is down, they need all the help they can get as fast as they can get it.” More than three million A.I.M. Cards have been issued since 1985, and you can get yours free by calling (800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. Free “Do Not Remove This Helmet” stickers are also available. WEIRD NEWS: HONDA WORKING ON MOTORCYCLE SEATBELTS Yes, you read it right…Honda is working on a system of seatbelts for motorcycles. Seems crazy, but it appears to be a serious pro-ject judging from the patents Honda has filed for the system, and images posted on BikersPost.com. According to the website, the belt arrangement is designed for larger touring bikes like the Gold Wing where the rider won't be moving around much in the seat, and the belt can work with the airbag to more effectively reduce injuries. However, Honda apparently has recognized that in a lot of accidents it's better to be away from the bike rather than at-tached to it, so their new seatbelt system also has elements of ejector seat: When the computer senses that the bike is irretrieva-bly tipping over it releases the entire seat, with the rider still at-tached, and inflates an airbag backrest. “The idea is that having ejected you slide down the road in a sitting position, with the seat betwixt your hide and the asphalt. Sort of extreme tobogganing.” Of course, nobody envisioned airbags on a motorcycle either, before Honda’s R&D team put one on their Gold Wing as a fac-tory option. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sym-pathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.” ~ George Washington Carver, scientist (1864-1943)

Motorcycle Fatalities Drop in

2010

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation

has been informed of a report

that will be released at midnight

April 19th by the Governors'

Highway Safety Association. The

report takes a close look at pre-

liminary highway fatality data for the States. The

report which examines data for the first three quar-

ters of 2010 shows motorcyclists fatalities dropped

two percent. A similar report released last year had

motorcyclists deaths down ten percent.

It is not known what the fourth quarter will bring

but the first two had significant drops and the third

had a slight increase.

The same report also indicated that overall use of

DOT helmet use had risen by thirteen percent.

On a call with journalists, MRF Vice President of

Government Relations said "if you want to increase

DOT helmet use, abolish mandatory helmet law,

forcing helmets onto motorcyclists against their will

pushes them to purchase the lightest, smallest hel-

met that can be found and are often times not DOT

compliant." "Furthermore most helmet law States

do not require a DOT helmet."

The MRF will publish the full report when it is avail-

able.

Our new letter regarding the Motorcycle Safety stops, please copy this, sign it and mail it to your new Governor: May 1, 2011 The Office of the Governor State of Georgia 203 State Capitol Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Re: NHTSA Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstrations Grant Dear Honorable Governor Deal: I am writing to voice my concerns over the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Motorcycle Law Enforcement Dem-onstrations Grant Program and ask for your assistance in disrupting the program in Georgia. The program blantantly discriminates against motorcyclists and fails to address motorcycle safety. The NHTSA recently announced a grant program to supposedly address Motorcycle Safety issues. The recipient of the money for the demo project was the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The Georgia State Patrol is conducting a series of roadside motorcy-cle safety checks in accordance with what was outlined in the Request for Applications. The amount of NHTSA funding is $70,000.00. The motorcycle check points do not address nor decrease motorcycle accidents and instead “profiles” motorcyclists and discriminates against citizens based on their mode on transportation and clothing. Motorcycle Safety is an important and growing issue in Georgia. Over the past several months Georgia has lost several motorcyclists to inattentive and distracted drivers. The Motorcycle Only Check Points do not address the issues that are killing our motorcyclists. A strong research based motorcycle safety awareness program is needed to ensure our safety and reduce crashes not police check points that target the victims of crashes. Members of the US Congress recently urged US Transportation Secretary LaHood to suspend the grant program and to concentrate on crash causation and education programs. I am asking for your help in suspending the demo program in Georgia. I am one of 800,000 registered motorcyclists in Georgia and am counting on your help to redirect and redefine motorcycle safety in Georgia. Thank you for time and consideration. If you have any questions or need further clarification please contact Linda Allen, Legislative Director, ABATE of Georgia, Inc. at 770-949-3426. Sincerely, Member A.B.A.T.E. of Georgia

23 May 2011 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER

Each month it seems that there is someone somewhere that wants to supposedly make our lives better by making new rules. It seems that our law makers know how to protect us without so much as getting to know us or even asking our opinion. They seem to be sup-posedly looking out for our welfare by protecting us from ourselves. Hopefully you have felt that way at some point in your life. The problem is what do we do about it? By being part of an organization that will voice our opinions and also step out for us on those critical issues that are important to us. To help us protect the fact that we love to ride. It also saves fuel as we cruse down the highway to that next destination. Around that next curve and over that tallest mountain! How much could we save if all rode bikes but even better how many lives could be saved if all motorists had to go thru motorcycle classes? If time and energy was spent trying to educate all drivers that we are there and to be watching for us. I spend most of my time watching and waiting for that next person that will pull out in front of me even while I am looking them in the eye. Or meeting that vehicle that will make that turn in front of me and never even see me even with my lights on! Most drivers are looking for something as big as a car and or not looking for anything smaller. I like those lonely roads that no one rides just so I do not have to worry about meeting those that do not see me. Instead I can worry about those deer that are on the side of the road or even the wild hogs that I see occasionally. Where I live that is definitely a possibility at any given time and can happen within a mile of my home. There are other things to worry about on the road without having to think about other drivers. Education would go a long way to help keep us safe on the road. We need to remember that we are invisible to other drivers and ride accordingly. I say this to tell you that we also need to continually learn what hazards that we face on the road each and every day. Whether big or small we need to know what is in our path, that rock that has washed down in front of us or the gravel that is in the curve, or maybe the oil spill that has been deliberately put in our path because they do not like all the bikes on the road over the weekend. Could be that speed trap just over the next rise! As we ride we are going to face obstacles in the road but we also will face them in our lives. As we go thru life we face all kinds of disappointments from the ones that we love and trust the most and usually they are family members. They are the ones that are closest to us and the ones that you would not think that would hurt us in any way but they do and they sometimes do not even realize that they have done it. Unfortunately we cannot see those things coming and cannot prepare for it as we can on the road. We can however control our reaction but it comes not from us but from someone that know us better than we know ourselves. Someone that knows us from the inside out! Someone that looks at our heart rather than what they see on the outside. Someone that loved us even before we were born and who will always stand by our side, so much so that he sent his son to die for us that we might have everlasting life. If you do not him personally talk with a CMA member he can introduce him to you. Here if you need us

District News

Hello from District 2! We held our fourth meeting at the new El Jinete Mexican Restaurant 345 W. Louise Street (Historic Hwy 441) Clarkesville, GA 30523 We are also looking into another venue for our meetings that might be willing to offer discounts to our members for food and drink along the lines that Confettis does for District 4 east (they offer a 15% discount for ABATE members ALL of the time!) Anthony brought the meeting to order at 2:12PM. Brother John was going to be an hour late, so we began with the Pledge of Alle-giance. David Norman was right in the middle of his big move to Dawsonville and couldn’t make the meeting so Anthony gave us a Treas-ury report, and we still are doing OK. He told the group that we are all paid up with the state office and that he issued a check for our $50.00 dues the day before at the BOD meeting in Austell. Also he reported on District 4 East’s DC Michael Collins being sworn in as the interim Activities Director for the State as well. He also stressed the importance of the use of A.B.A.T.E as an acronym to make people aware that it stands for “American Bikers Active Toward Education”. He then explained that the new event insurance additionally covers all officers at events up to three million dollars. He also told us of the proposed State Regional Directors, one for the North Districts, one for the Middle GA Districts, and one for the Southern Districts. This position will be for relieving DCs at meetings that they cannot attend, and also acting as a liaison between each district and the State Director. He then introduced Dustin Amerson, our new Assistant Sergeant At Arms to the group. He will be assuming David Wright’s duties when David is on the road working. Thanks for stepping up Dustin! Anthony then gave us a Legislative update including the Protest Ride to end Motorcycle Only Checkpoints in GA that we and Sam participated in. He then called attention to the April Newsletter that he had available at the meeting. He also announced that we would be offering ABATE products such as Yard Signs, Car and Bike Flags and Bumper Stickers (they being offered free to mem-bers and $1.00 to non-members). Anthony then showed us a flyer for the District 4 East Easter Extravaganza being held on Sunday April 24th at Confettis on Spalding Drive in Norcross GA and he urged us to support their event! Anthony told us then of his meeting with Chip, the new Motorcycle Programs Manager at North GA Technical College, David’s successor, and his idea to have our May swap meet at the college. There will be a bike show judged by D2 members as well as Dyno trials. We are also holding a Poker Run to benefit the state office, the cost being $10.00 or $15.00 with a passenger with prizes for Best, Worst and Second Best hands. More information coming soon to abatega2.org as well as abatega.org. He also reminded us of ABATE D2's Annual "Chicken Ride". When: Sat, May 28, 11am – 3pm Where: Ingles, 55 Helen Highway, Cleveland, GA Description: We'll meet at the Cleveland Ingles ready to pull out at 11:00 a.m. for a ride to the Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville to visit Alan "Chicken" Johnson. We will be eating a 'sandwich' lunch there. As many of you know, Alan was hit on his motorcycle and is a quadriplegic. He has called the Union County Nursing Home "HOME" for the past 28 years. Alan is still a biker at heart and a lifetime member of ABATE D2. We then took a 15 minute break at 2:40pm When we came back Anthony proposed an “Aid” fund for D2 to help pay some bills for D2 members injured on their bikes. He then spoke once again about how to approach businesses to sell ads for the newsletter and website. Brother John then said that he leaves his newsletter at local businesses, and waiting rooms when he’s done reading it and said that we all should try to do that, great idea! We then had our 50-50 drawing and Chris won again…$32 this time, two meetings in a row! Anthony then opened the floor for open forum questions and conversation. We thanked the El Jinete for the use of their private room for our meetings, discussed our having ABATE booths at the North GA. Wingman MC Swap meet on Saturday the 9th and at Desti-nation Helen and the HHI SPRING BLING on 04/16/11 10:00am at 389 Lumpkin County Parkway, Dahlonega, GA. Anthony and I would also like to thank Stephanie for riding all the way up to Gainesville to work her butt off in our membership booth all day long on Saturday the 9th ! Thanks Steph!

Brother John closed the meeting at 3:25 with a prayer.

Our May meeting is on Sunday the first.

See you then!

District News District 9-2 April Meeting Minutes April 18, 2011

The meeting began and 7:00 p.m. Derrick Lewis gave the invocation and Dan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The meeting began with our legislative director, Dil-lon, reporting on the red light bill moving within the house, but stated we’ll have next year to move it forward. Washington State passed the no profiling bill and suspended the motorcycles rules when having a parade, etc. These are the kinds of things we’d like to get accomplished within our own state. Federal legislation regarding the NHSA – National Highway Safety Administration – has bills introduced to keep them from lobby-ing for the helmet bill. A bill has been introduced requiring a mandatory safety course in order to receive a M endorsement on your license. Dan is asking all Legislative Directors from all Districts to be at the Board of Director’s meeting at the Harley Davidson in Tifton on July 9th, to be updated about present and future bills for our state.

Michelle, our membership director, reported we have 80 members, which included 14 new members and 4 renewed. The new members signed up at Xtreme Rider’s Anniversary Party on April 9-10th.

Sue read the minutes from March and they were ap-proved as read.

Bridget, our treasurer, reported we have $1009 in our account and $223 of that will be sent to the state as a direct re-sponse to the 50/50 draw during the Xtreme Rider Anniversary Party.

Dan shared info regarding Thunder Roads and their latest issue with an intense focus on ABATE of Georgia. We do appreciate Jerry Mc (Thunder Roads) and Randy Snyder (Full Throttle) for their efforts and support of ABATE.

Old business included changing the date of our Swap Meet from May 14 to June 4th. The location is now downtown LaGrange and we’re excited to be part of Biker’s On Main that weekend. We need volunteers to set up. Tables are $25 and a 10 x 10 spot will go for $100. He urged all of us to reach out and find people who want to purchase tables and sell their wares. Derrick also stated he needs help with setting up Biker’s on Main starting Friday evening around 4:00 p.m. and continu-ing Saturday from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Please make ar-rangements to come to the event and take a little time out of your day to volunteer. Bands will be setting up and tearing down. They also need to secure T-Shirt sponsors. If you know of someone who would be interested, contact Derrick and let him know.

The Ronald McDonald Tab Run Ride, sponsored by Southside Riders of Griffin, will be going to Riverbend park at Cusseta in September. District 9 will handle the end of the ride this year.

Dan discussed our state Junior ABATE program and that it cost $10.00 to be member. There is an application to complete and we’d love to see more children signing up.

Visibility is the key and yellow yard signs are avail-able to place in your yard for $10 each. You may purchase bright yellow and orange t-shirts for only $15.00 . The pro-ceeds go to ABATE.

New business began with Dan sharing new positions filled within the state. Sue Duggan is the new Educational Di-rector. She will be working on educating the general public and

ABATE members on motorcycle safety. There are also 3 new Regional Directors who will work with their districts regarding public speaking, helping District Coordinators, and assisting the districts to be in compliance with ABATE of Georgia. David Norman has north Georgia, Ricky Jordan has central Georgia, and Jerry McDaniel has south Georgia. We had 1100 ABATE members statewide in January and now we’re up to 1640 mem-bers. We welcome these new positions as we continue to grow in numbers.

We have a new insurance company for ABATE of Georgia. We have deleted the $100 event fee, but continued the monthly $50 fee required from each district. Now the officers have coverage, should anything happen at meetings.

ABATE of Georgia has joined forces with Air Evac out of LaGrange. The benefit of $10 off a single or family membership is now offered to ABATE members.

May 14th is a day set aside for a statewide membership drive. We are to find a local event and man a membership drive that day. There is a DAD ride that day leaving the White-tail Pub and we need volunteers to man the tent and bring in new ABATE members. Let Dan know if you have some time to donate that day. We need your help!

We’re not sure when the next Motorcycle Only Safety stops will take place, but we think the next checkpoint could be North of LaGrange at the weigh station on Interstate 85 South. Keep an eye out for a large yellow sign stating the checkpoints will take place and let Dan know if you see one. The Georgia State Patrol has to disclose information regarding the results of these checkpoints and we do request the information, which is available to the general public. Also, if you do get stopped, shut up and stand up. Tom McGrath, an attorney from South Carolina, suggested you be polite, keep your mouth shut, and let his office know if you do get stopped. Stand up for your rights! There is something you can do. On page 20 of our last newsletter, there is a letter regarding checkpoints. Sign this letter and send it to the Governor. We need the state of Georgia to hear your voice and opinions. Future Rides Include: April 23 – Great South HOG ride to the Great Wall (located in Newnan for a short time) May 6 – International Female Ride Day – Women make sure you ride this day! May 13-14 – Rally on the River in Cusseta, Georgia May 21-22 – Renaissance Festival Motorcycle Days – show your motorcycle endorsement on your license and get $4 off a ticket. May 21 – Untamed Cycles Ride for Beth Walker, a photogra-pher who has taken many photos of motorcyclists – Registra-tion at 10:00a.m. and KSU at 11:00 a.m. June 4 – Biker’s On Main – ABATE 9-2 Swap Meet June 10 – District 6 – Grove Bar and Grill to Atlanta Motor Speedway - $10 donation

Glenda won our 50/50 for a second month in a row! Go Glenda! She also took home a hat from our door prizes. Dillon won a hat as well. Kenny Vowell won a $5.00 gift cer-tificate donated by Hog Heaven. There were 29 members in attendance and 5 guests. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
