Down on Spring View Farm……. Loads to report this month! We sold our batch of 29 store cattle in Thirsk and they averaged just over £600 each before deductions so we were very happy with that. They were 7 months old and comprised of 24 bullocks and 5 heifers and were ideal “farmers cattle” to turn out to grass this spring. Just a load of mucking out to do now! The muck is going on to some land we have at Wigginton (I know it’s a long way to cart it) as we are going to grow fodder beet on it this year and its “hungry land” so will benefit from a good mucking.

We also bought 2 Highland cows this month, in calf to the Saler bull and both due at the end of April. We turned them and the Whitebred cows out on Sunday 19th March as it is very dry and the weather is good. We are still feeding them silage though as there is no grass yet. Our Whitebred Shorthorn cow, Elizabeth, has been leading us a merry dance for the past 10 days or so as we were sure she was going to calve. Anyway, last Saturday she produced a fine healthy HEIFER calf!! Whoop! This is very special as Whitebred girls are rarer than the Giant Panda!

We named her Spring View Lady Kathryn (Little Lady Katie) and she has real attitude already running around in the “cow and calf” paddock we have. However, we were brought back down to earth with a big bump the following Sunday morning when we found that one of the newly arrived Highlanders had “slipped” her calf. She seems OK but the calf was fully formed and it looks like it was just one of those things that happen every now and then. We are waiting for the vet report to make sure there wasn’t any disease issue. Livestock and deadstock eh?

Question: Hello Sue its nearly time to turn cattle out and I lost 2 animals

last year with grass staggers. What do you recommend to prevent it please?

Answer: Grass staggers can be a killer as you found out last year. So many deaths can be prevented by using a suitable magnesium supplement like our OPTILIX Cattle magnesium licks. These are very palatable with highly available magnesium. They also supply essential trace elements, including chelated zinc to maintain good health. Feed these buckets pre-turnout and until the staggers risk has passed. They contain copper so don’t offer to sheep! We do a mag extra bucket for sheep and both….. And finally…. Nicola Sturgeon is touring Perthshire, in the First Minister’s chauffeur driven car.

Suddenly a cow jumps out into the road. They hit it full on and the car comes to a stop. Nicola in her usual jaunty manner, says to the chauffeur: "You get out and check - you were driving."

The chauffeur gets out, checks and reports that the animal is dead. "You were driving, go and tell the farmer," says Nicola, ”I can’t afford to be blamed for anything.”

The chauffeur walks up the drive to the farmhouse and returns five hours later totally plastered, his hair ruffled

and with a big grin on his face. "My God, what happened to you?" asks Nicola.

The chauffeur replies: " When I got there, the farmer opened his best bottle of malt whisky, the wife gave me a slap up meal and the daughter made love to me."

"What on earth did you say?" asks Nicola.

"I knocked on the door and when it was answered, I said to them, I'm Nicola Sturgeon’s chauffeur and I've just killed the cow!!
