In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive. Families on the land are suffering and they need our help. Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers’ Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief.
. 100% of donations goes to the farmers and is tax deductible via Ro-tary and RAWCS. Every dollar counts.

PRESIDENT ROB CHAMBER’S DESK
Combined Semaphore Carousel 80th Anniversary and "World End Polio Day"
Event Planning Update The proposed day for the celebration at the carousel falls on Sunday, 7th October which coin-cides with the school holidays, and falls in the same month as "World End Polio Day" (the 24th). The response from western suburbs Rotary Clubs involved in the carousel has been very posi-tive, and a meeting with club representatives to plan the details is scheduled for the coming week. Initial suggested activities include a BBQ, Walkathon, public image promotion by displaying our activities as well as actually refurbishing wheelchairs, assembling "hands" or birthing kits for the public to see or even participate. (We could find a few potential members). Collectively we could sponsor a face painter or free rides on the Carousel which would encourage children to line up, leaving the parents and caregivers with time to walk around our Rotary displays. I see this event as a Rotary Public Image day, promoting "End Polio" and "People in Action" ra-ther than having a purely fund raising focus, however money will be raised and we could pool our resources for the best outcome on the day. Finding potential members would also be a priority as it goes together with "Public Image". This could be a great opportunity to invite a television weather reporter, for example, to an-nounce the weather from Semaphore thereby promoting both the Carousel and the merits of Rotary. Rotary Australia has partnered with The National Farmers Federation on Channel 9 to assist drought stricken farmers. I am suggesting a donation of $100 per member from our club funds to assist some desperate Aussies would be a good idea. This Monday, the 6th, Channel Nine are focusing on the im-pacts of the drought on farmers during the morning show - "Today".
From President Rob in the Gold Coast.

On Tuesday evening , RCKP member, Tina Murray, spoke about the ‘AFRICA SUNRISE
FOUNDATION’, the grassroots NGO she founded in 2014, and about her recent trip to
Ghana.
The Ghanaian people, especially in remote areas face many challenges including a lack
of clean water and inadequate, if any, toilet facilities. In
2014, the widespread practice of open defecation contrib-
uted to 249 people dying of cholera; 3000 kids die each year from diarrhoea. Tina
revealed that 3000 schools are without toilets.
Educational supplies are also very limited. In one
school the Foundation supports, ‘Abundant Grace’,
computer lessons consisted of cardboard cut-outs of
a monitor and keyboard, and a stone for a mouse.
Tina emphasised that that many of us don’t realise that providing toilets is critical
for girls and their education. In many cases, girls who are menstruating won’t
attend school, as they have nowhere to change. That potentially negatively im-
pacts 1/4 of their education.
As the people in Ghana are accustomed to paying for water and community toi-
lets, the ‘AFRICA SUNRISE FOUNDATION’ is working with the Abundant Grace and Proud Academy to develop
free toilets for their schools, with attached community toilets that would
be user paid. Profits generated should cover for the cost of the mainte-
nance, and excess profits for the school to manage for their own
needs. Each roof will collect rain water in a tank. One builder is exploring
bio fill waste management where the excrement can be converted to safe
fertiliser that can be given, or sold, by the schools to the local farming com-
munities.
‘Together we are working to provide a 3 tiered effect: community health,
education and sustainable income for the schools through these toi-
lets.’ Tina Murray.
