Ilkeston born actor Robert Lindsay, star of the popular BBC sitcom ‘My Family’, has joined a growing list of well-known personalities in pledging their support to this year’s D.H. Lawrence Festival, which will take place in the writer’s hometown of Eastwood in September.
Now in its ninth year the annual D.H. Lawrence Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the writer D.H. Lawrence’s hometown of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire for a fortnight long festival which celebrates the life and work of the writer in his hometown of Eastwood.
Born just a stones throw from Lawrence’s hometown, Ilkeston-born Lindsay has always had a strong connection to the writer. Speaking about his new role as Festival Patron, the actor said:“I've always felt closely linked to D. H. Lawrence, not only because my home was only four miles from his but he also taught in my secondary school, Gladstone Boys – though, I hasten to add, I wasn't a pupil at the time!”
“His novel, Sons and Lovers, resonates with
the early period of my life but mostly it's Lawrence's quest for knowledge as he travelled the world and yet his most memorable work came from his roots and there I feel we have much in common”.
“I am proud of where I come from and I'm proud to be a Patron of this year's Festival. Long may it continue like his works.”
The ‘Citizen Smith’ actor will lend his support and champion the annual
celebration alongside Nottinghamshire-born screenwriter Billy Ivory, long-standing BBC Radio Nottingham presenter John Holmes, MP for Ashfield Gloria De Piero and Professor Christopher Miles, Director and Producer of D.H. Lawrence’s film adaptation ‘The Virgin and the Gypsy’ and ‘The Priest of Love’.
The Festival’s diverse programme of events brings together lectures; reading groups; film screenings; workshops; exhibitions; guided walks; theatre performances and music, as well as a range of family activities. The 2012 programme will take place from Wednesday 5th to Wednesday 19th September 2012.

After the overwhelming display of community spirit shown as the Olympic Torch passed through Nottinghamshire, I am convinced more than ever that there are people out there who care about their neighbourhoods and want to give something back to their community.
So why not join Nottinghamshire Police as a Special Constable?
Specials not only play a signifi cant part in assisting with the policing, they also help us resource public events such as fairs and carnivals.
There are nearly 400 Specials currently working across the force. Not only did they play a signifi cant part in assisting with the policing of the disorder in August last year, they also work in neighbourhood policing teams and help police public events.
As a Special Constable you will work with a diverse range of people, make new friends, learn valuable new skills, which are transferable to the workplace, and challenge yourself with new experiences.
You will learn fi rst hand about policing in Nottinghamshire and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to police the local community - hopefully your community.
We welcome applications from people who have lived in the UK for a minimum of three years and we are
actively recruiting people aged 18 to 58 – although, we are particularly interested to hear from anyone who is between 30 and 50 years of age or from ‘Black and Minority Ethnic’ backgrounds to ensure we represent the diverse communities we serve.
Successful applicants receive training before starting on the job and are asked to work a minimum of 16 hours per month.
We are holding Specials Pre-recruitment Awareness events throughout the year at various locations where you will be able to discover in detail what the role involves
During the events, attendees will hear from the Specials recruitment and training team about the expectations Nottinghamshire Police have of their Specials and what those who join us can expect from the role. Potential applicants will also learn about the recruitment and selection process, training programme and the vetting process. A number of serving Specials will also be there to chat about their experiences in the role.
To fi nd out more, please call us on 101, extension 800 2429 or visit the force website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and visit the recruitment section and follow the ‘Specials’ link.

A special Bowls match in Coronation Park, Eastwood celebrated its new Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields status and marked £86,000 worth of improvements to the park.
Councillor Margaret Handley took part in the match, along with Town Mayor of Eastwood, Councillor Brian Griffin and members of the resident Greasley Miners Welfare Bowls Club to celebrate improvements to the 1960s sports pavilion.
The pavilion has been redesigned to make better use of the space and provide modern, more energy efficient building with facilities for people with disabilities and will now be known as the ‘Coronation Park - Queen Elizabeth II Sports Pavilion’.
Other extensive improvements at the popular town centre park have also been completed including upgrades to the children’s play area, a new multi-use games area and resurfaced pathways and car park.
EASTWOOD BOWLED OVER BY £86,000 PARK
IMPROVEMENTS
Broadgate Park, Beeston; Hall Om Wong Open Space, Kimberley; Coronation Park, Eastwood and Queen Elizabeth Park, Stapleford have all been awarded special Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields
status to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The award offers each of the four sites, nominated by Broxtowe Borough Council, protection as areas of green space for the public to enjoy and enables the Council to bid for funding to further improve the sites. To mark their designation, commemorative plaques donated by the Fields in Trust were unveiled at each site.
Cabinet member for Environment, Councillor Stan Heptinstall said: “Broxtowe Borough Council is committed to protecting the environment for future generations and the nomination of four local green spaces as Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields represents part of that pledge.“The Council has been bowled over by local people’s desire to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and we’re confident that the special designation these parks have received goes some way to matching residents’ commitment.”
For more information about the newly-designated Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3643, email: [email protected] or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/jubilee
FOUR DIAMOND JUBILEE PLAYING FIELDS
UNVEILED
Councillors have welcomed a proposal to make over £85,000 worth of improvements to parks and open spaces within Broxtowe Borough in the areas of Eastwood, Greasley and Nuthall.
A Skate Park in Basil Russell Playing Fields, Nuthall is just one of the accepted proposals, after the idea was promoted by a group of young children who submitted a petition with over 200 children’s names to the Parish Council. The children will be actively involved in the design of the new Skate Park, with work due to commence in September 2012.
Greasley will also see improvements to Beauvale Park, including better access across the park by widening and resurfacing sections of the existing path, as well as the creation of a new path around the edge of the site. Additional seating will also be installed.
Broxtowe Borough Council’s contribution towards a new skate park at Coronation Park, Eastwood was also accepted together with path works in the park following consultation with over 100 park users. The improvements have been made possible due to funding from Section 106 developer contributions from the Giltbrook Dyers and Cleaners site. Section 106 Developer Funding provides financial support to develop public open space in areas close to the development. Town and Parish Councils are consulted and applications are made to the Borough Council for funds to be allocated as well as the Borough Council funding its own recreational developments.
For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 9173643 or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk.

BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2012 UCI BMX World Championships is the biggest annual event in the BMX racing calender. This year Great Britain was the host nation. The event was held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham where a bmx track was constructed in 7 days especially for the event.BMX racers from all over the world competed for the coveted world titles. Among them was 9 year old Ewan Towle from Watnall. Ewan has been racing for three years now and trained hard for this event. There were over 100 riders in Ewans age group. Riders have to complete 3 motos (races) and then the fastest riders go through to the knockout rounds where only the top four riders go through. The competition from other countries was extremely tough but Ewan was on top form and managed to go through to the semi finals. Ewans dad Mark said, “we are so proud of Ewan, he’s ranked 11th in the world which is amazing, all the hard work and training paid off,”Ewan is a member of Derby BMX Club based at Alveston Park, Derby. In Kimberley, there is a surprisingly long history of people borrowing library books. They must have taken them back when they were due, because the system has kept on working for almost five generations.
The first public library didn’t open in the town until 1942 so what was going on before that?
With so many chapels and so many pubs in the eighteen-hundreds, it’s pretty obvious how a lot of people spent their spare time. But reading was very popular, too, so back in 1874 Kimberley Literary Institute provided a Reading Room for their members.
They stocked it with a regular supply of magazines and newspapers. Getting to know the news was no easy matter in those days. There was no radio, no TV either, and no internet. Daily papers were so much more expensive than nowadays that many ordinary people couldn’t afford to buy one for themselves.
But mainly the shelves in the Reading Room contained hardback books to borrow in great quantity and variety. So there were a lot of happy book-worms in Kimberley back then.
I’ll put my hand up and say that I’m a book-worm too. I can’t claim to have been using the library for 138 years (although some days it feels like it!) but reading books has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. More recently, I’ve been writing them.
When my book Cassie – The Story of a Rescue Dog won an award last year, I was so thrilled that I wanted to do something big to celebrate. I decided to set up ‘The Great Kimberley Book Read’.
Everyone I suggested it to was enthusiastic and I’ve received a fantastic amount of support. Launched on 14th July, it is a 12-week event at Kimberley Library. You go along, borrow a book from the special fitment, and when you bring it back you give it a score from 1-10 for how much you enjoyed it. It’s as simple as that.
On 29th September all the votes will be counted and the one with the highest number will be the winner. On 6th October Kimberley’s MP, Anna Soubry, will come to the Library in the morning to present an award to the winning author.
During the first week in October local Kimberley traders will take part in a Shop Window Display Competition, based on the theme of books and reading. Anna Soubry will present the cash prizes for this competition, too.
On 6th October the children from all eight local primary schools will take part in a fancy dress parade to the Library and sing their ‘Book-Worm’ song for the winners. It’s going to be a big fun event. Check out the web site www.greatkimberleyread.com to see everything that’ll be going on. There will be dancing in the street and I promise it won’t rain!!

Soil, especially in raised beds, benefits from being enriched with compost. It contains essential nutrients to help the plants grow. Whilst you can buy ready made compost - making it yourself is cheap and very eco-friendly by reducing the amount of household waste going to landfil. Even the smallest garden can compost.
There are loads of different options for composting - however if you have a small garden like mine you are more limited. A great idea is a wormery. Worms eat lots of kitchen waste like used tea bags, vegetable peelings, stale bread and crushed egg shells. They also like shredded paper and small amounts of garden waste. The worms then convert
the waste into a rich fertilizer. A basic wormery costs around £60.
A ready made composting bin is another option. These are good value, starting at around £16, and easy to use. You add garden waste, shredded paper, vegetable peelings etc. through the top and after a few months you can remove the compost via a door at the bottom. There are products available to add to the composter to accelerate the process but left to its on devices nature will take its course. Always remember to place the bin onto bare earth to encourage the
worms and microbes to do their magic. Although these plastic bins are not very attractive to look at you can screen them using evergreen plants, trellis with a climber growing up it or a willow or bamboo screen.
During the spring and summer months we have loads of grass cuttings which are great for the compost bin, however to produce good compost layer with other waste. Grass can compact and fail to rot down if it is piled together in a big heap.
Leaf mould is also great for the garden. A cheap and easy way to cultivate it is to collect the fallen leaves in Autumn in black bin liners. Once almost full, add a small amount of water, tie up and shake. Then pierce a few holes in the bottom and sides of the bag and put away somewhere (ours are behind the garden shed). After a year or two you should have a good quality leaf mould.
Most local authorities have composting schemes. The best thing to do is check out their websites or go to www.getcomposting.com. This website works in partnership with local councils. You simply type in your postcode and you get a list of products available in your area at reduced rates.

Hundreds of flag-waving residents who lined the streets of Eastwood to show their support for their local Armed Forces heroes back in May are being encouraged to share their memories of the day by submitting their images to a special online image gallery.
Local people turned out en masse to show their support to 170 (Infrastructure Support)Engineer Group Royal Engineers on their return from Afghanistan, as they exercised their Freedom of Entry to the Borough of Broxtowe by marching through the town.
Residents are now being urged to share their memories of the day by enjoying a special
image gallery of the event online at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/imagegallery, as well as submitting their own pictures using the easy-to-use online form.
The Freedom of Entry parade saw veterans from the Royal Engineers Association join the Group in marching through Eastwood town centre, led by the Nottinghamshire Band of the
Royal Engineers (Volunteers).Following the parade, wreaths were laid at the newly rededicated war memorial on Mansfield Road during a short ceremony led by Reverend David Stevenson of St Mary’s Church, Eastwood.Visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/imagegallery to enjoy a special image gallery of the event.

Grab a Kebab!Kebabs are easy to prepare, quick to cook and healthy. You can cook them over a bbq, under a grill or using a grill pan on the stove. Skewers can be wooden or metal. Wooden ones need a good soak in water first. Metal skewers can be re-used and also conduct heat, helping to cook meat through.
Halloumi and Veg Kebabs200g halloumi cheese1 or 2 courgettes2 red onionscherry tomatoes2 yellow peppersmarinade2 tbsp olive oiljuice of 1/2 lemon1 tsp dried oregano
Spicy Chicken Kebabs450g chicken breast2 red onionscherry tomatoesmarinade2 tbsp olive oil1 tbsp red wine vinegarjuice of half a limepinch chilli powder or flakes2 cloves garlic finely chopped
Fruit Kebabspineapplebananas x21 x ripe mangostrawberriesmarinade2 tbsp honey1 tbsp brown sugarjuice of half a lime
Seafood Kebabs190g uncooked king prawns200g scallops - (king are better but I could only get queen)1 fillet of white fish like monkfish6 rashers of streaky baconmarinade2 cloves garlic - finely choppedpinch of chilli powder2 tbsp olive oiljuice of half lemon Cut the fillet of white fish and add along with the rest of the fish to a bowl. Mix the marinade and add to the fish. Stir to coat and leave for at least an hour. Cut each rasher of bacon into 3 strips and use it to wrap around the scallops. Thread the fish onto skewers and bbq until all the fish is cooked through. Lovely with couscous.
Prepare the fruit into bite size chunks and thread onto skewers. If you are cooking on an outdoor bbq it might be an idea to lay the fruit on foil. I used a grill pan and melted some butter on it first. Place the kebabs on the heat and brush with the marinade. Turn and cook until the fruit starts to go brown and caramelise. This should only be a few minutes. Delicious served with ice cream, creme fraiche or chocolate sauce.
Cut chicken into chunks. Mix marinade and add to chicken. Cover and leave overnight. Thread chicken, red onion and tomatoes onto skewers and cook until chicken is cooked through. Make sure it is thoroughly cooked.
Cut the cheese, courgettes, red onion and yellow pepper into bite size chunks and place in a bowl with the tomatoes. Mix the marinade ingredients and add to the vegetables. Mix really well and leave for as long as possible. Over night is good. Thread the veg and cheese onto skewers and grill until browned & the veg are cooked.
