Summer spells a time when most people will be relaxing and going on holiday. But this year, as we look forward to a summer of sport with the World Cup, don’t let car crime kick off.

Failing to keep your car secure is an own goal you won’t want to make, so reserve this summer for scoring a win against thieves by making sure doors, windows and sunroofs are shut, locked and secure at all times.

Give car thieves red cards this season by ensuring valuables are out of sight. Even something as simple as a coat or lunchbox on the backseat could be enough for opportunists to make a tackle that you won’t see coming.

I’m sure that sat-navs are one of the most valuable things you keep in your car, but you can score a hat-trick against theft this season by: making sure not to leave them in the glove box, keeping them secure and on your person, and making sure to wipe suction marks off the windscreen.

But doing this is only enough to call half-time on thieves. Make sure you’re a point up at the end of play by taking your keys out of the car at all times, otherwise you could be sitting out the next match because thieves have taken you for a ride. I’m sure

that losing your car wasn’t part of your game plan.

And if you’re travelling to an unfamiliar place this bank holiday, revise your defence strategy and read up on the Park Mark approved car parks which are an estimated 50 times safer than parking on the street. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of those odds?

Blow the final whistle on car thieves by having an alarm fitted as well as investing in a steering lock. Don’t let thieves make you their next target, after all, it’s worth taking the time to secure you vehicle to stop losing the match in the long run.

Remember to catch us at road shows events across the county this summer, where you can get the upper hand on car crime by picking up some crime prevention advice from our officers. Visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ for details of where we will be and more crime prevention advice.

It’s a Wrap!At around £1 for a pack of 8, wraps are a regular on my shopping list. As well as an alternative to bread for pack-ups they can be used for some delicious hot family meals and snacks. Here are some of my kids favourites...

Chorizo & Cheese Quesadillas4 large flour tortilla wraps2 tbsp olive oilFor the filling2 tbsp tomato ketchup150g grated red leicester cheese16 slices chorizoMethodSpread the ketchup over two of the wraps, place 8 slices of chorizo on top and cover both wraps with cheese, then place the other wrap on top so you have two large round sandwiches. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large non stick frying pan, when hot, add one of the quesadillas. Fry for a couple of minutes til golden, using a fish slice flip and fry for a couple of mins on the other side. Add the other tbsp oil and repeat with the other quesadilla. Remove, slice and enjoy!

SamosasMaking samosas out of flour tortillas couldn’t be easier. The 7” size works best. A pack of 10 wraps will make 20 samosas. Before you start, make some glue out of 1tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water. Use this to stick the edges down. When you are ready warm the wraps up for 10 secs in the microwave (2 at a time is fine). When pliable - cut each in half. Using your finger put some glue down the flat side and wrap into a cone shape. Press the seam to make sure they are stuck. Spoon in your favourite filling leaving enough room at the top to seal with the glue. Now you can brush with oil and bake on a tray in the oven (200˚C) for 10 mins. Or you can shallow fry for a couple of minutes each side until golden brown. There are loads of different fillings you could use: traditional spicy potato and pea, beans and cheese, spicy rice and mince, even chocolate buttons and sliced banana!!

For the topping150g cheddar - grated2 tbsp sour cream (optional)MethodHeat oven to 180°C. Grease a square oven proof dish. Make the filling first. Heat the oil in a large pan, cook chicken, remove with slotted spoon & place to one side. Fry peppers, onion, garlic & chillies until just cooked (add more oil if necessary). Put chicken back into the pan and season to taste. Now make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently for 10 mins. Check seasoning and adjust accordingly. Now to put it all together...add 3 tbsp of sauce to the chilli chicken mix, spread 2 tbsp of sauce on the bottom of the dish. Warm the tortillas up to make them easier to handle. Split the filling between the 4 wraps. Place the filling in the middle of the wrap, sprinke a bit of cheese on, tuck the sides in and roll up. Place the four wraps in the oven proof dish. Use the rest of the sauce to cover the wraps, dot the sour cream over and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 20 mins until golden and sizzling.

transformation was most impressive, now with an upstairs

area, too. Le Bistrot Pierre has created really popular

dining, focusing on French cuisine and offers great value

for money. Two and three course lunches (£10.95 and

£12.95 respectively) have ample selections. Evening menus

include Prix Fixe, À La Carte and Dine With Wine, where

each selection for every course is paired with a different

wine. Two courses are priced at £22.95 and three courses

£27.95. Soirée Gastronomique, a 6 course Set Dinner for

£22.95, is extremely popular, also.

Just answer the following question:What year was Le Bistrot Pierre established?

County shows are a celebration of British farming and the countryside. These events are packed with interest, for the whole family. Thousands of visitors, from those ‘just down the road’, to foreign tourists, perhaps holidaying in the UK, enjoy our county shows – very much so. With hundreds of trade stands, a county show is a fantastic day out. The Nottinghamshire County Show is held at Newark Showground, with show jumping, horse competitions, livestock, events for dogs, plus other animals and pets. The magnificent Grand Parade shows off the prize-winning animals from the dairy and beef cattle, plus the sheep classes. The dog agility is always great fun. The superb displays of flowers and plants will interest many, too. Some of the attractions and displays vary each year, so visiting the website will give all the information required and make planning a great day out, most worthwhile. This year’s event is Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, 2014. www.newarkshowground.com

The Lincolnshire County Show is held at the Lincolnshire Showground. This splendid event provides a fun-filled, action-packed day out for all the family. Spread over two days, the show attracts many thousands of visitors, each time. This venue has a purpose-built events' centre, with interlinked exhibition halls, meeting rooms and suites, all having the very latest technology. This year's event is Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 June, 2014. www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk

The Derbyshire County Show is held at Elvaston Showground. A great number of events involve horses and all types of cattle, plus other animals. The Most Elegantly Turned Out Horse and Carriage, and the Ladies’ Hunter Side Saddle events are really wonderful sights to see. The vintage tractors, cars, engines and motorcycles, hold much interest. With dog shows attracting a lot of interest too, plus other animals and the feathered section, there really is something for everyone. This year’s event is Sunday 22 June, 2014.

Remembering Eric….

William Eric Woodward

With the centenary of the First World War approaching one way we can contribute is to take a closer look at our war memorials and ask ourselves who were the men behind the names?

I chose a name at random from one Nottingham war memorial and set out to find out something about the life behind the name - William Eric Woodward.

Through researching the census records, I traced his nephew living in Derby. War records, Scouting and other archives gave me a wealth of information allowing me to piece together much of Eric’s short life. Born in 1899, William lived on Gawthorne Street, New Basford. His father, a house decorator, died in 1908 and his mother

took up this occupation to support Eric and his younger sister Agnes. Eric was a keen scout, joining the 1st Caledonian troop in 1909. The troop met at Blackwood camp close to the newly built Nottingham prison. A Memorial Gateway still marks the entrance to Blackwood commemorating all Scouts who died in the First World War. Eric’s sister, Agnes, later became Akela of the scout troop.

Corporal William Eric Woodward, Durham Light Infantry died on the 29th June 1919 in Leicester Military hospital and is buried in Basford cemetery. He is one of 15 names commemorated on the memorial windows at St Andrews with Castle Gate Church in Nottingham. The charity War Memorials Online (www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk) seeks photographs and details of all memorials to assist them in compiling a lasting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps you can assist this project or uncover some details of the lives behind the names on your local war memorial?

Eastwood celebrated its mining heritage with the launch of Dr David Amos’ new book ‘The Miners of Nottinghamshire: A History of the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Trade Unions, 1980-1985’ at the D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre.

The book delves deep into the mining history of the local area in the 1980s and focuses upon the effect the 1984-85 mining strike had on local people through some previously un-accessed sources as well as Dr Amos’ collection of documents from the dispute.

Dr Amos (pictured), previously a Colliery Union Representative, has extensive experience of the coal mining industry in Nottinghamshire, having worked at Annesley Colliery for almost 25 years. His academic career started at the University of Nottingham, studying part time from 1994-96, gaining the Advanced Certificate in Industrial Relations. He completed his BA in History with Politics in 2002 at the University of

Derby. In 2012, he graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nottingham with a dissertation on the Nottinghamshire Miners and the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike.

Why waste time, do it online!

Broxtowe Residents are being reminded to get online to find out their next bin collection dates.

Improvements to the Council’s ‘When’s my bin collection?’ online service mean residents can find the exact date of their collections using the easy-to-use postcode search facility, which also covers collections over Bank Holidays.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Richard Robinson said: “We would recommend that residents make the Council’s

website their first port of call as this is by far the quickest and easiest way to access bin collection information.”

There are a number of ways residents can find their collection dates:

• Visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/bincollections to use the ‘When is my collection’ online search facility.• Download a bin collection calendar from the ‘When is my collection’ online search facility.• Get details of your next collection sent to your mobile by texting BROX NEXT, your postcode and house number to 60075 i.e. BROX NEXT NG9 1AB 32.

For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3143, email [email protected] or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/locateit

Anyone reading this who was born in 1914, as their daddy marched off to war, will be celebrating their 100th birthday this year. There are more people receiving their telegram from the Queen than ever before, but it’s still uncommon. However, the statistics now say that a child born this year can realistically expect to live to be a hundred. What might they experience by 2114?

2014’s centenarians will have seen changes during their lifetime that they could never have envisaged in their wildest dreams. When they began at school they wrote their sums on a slate with a stub of chalk. Now, individualised teaching programmes via the use of computer apps are being piloted in some schools. Paper and pen for classroom tasks will have come and gone within the space of a lifetime.

Our 1914 baby would have been lucky to survive childhood illnesses that are now rarities, such as rickets, TB and polio. Better health education and inoculation programmes have worked wonders. The invention of penicillin banished previously untreatable infections. The contraceptive pill put an end to families of fourteen or more children in houses where now a family of four feels cramped.

Back then, regular Sunday School attendance was a must for all children. Even if they could barely read, they knew the bible stories and the parables and saw them depicted in stained glass. Now, Sundays are more likely to be spent going round Ikea. A recent survey found that a great number of today’s children don’t know that Noah’s Ark or even the Nativity story are to be found in the bible.

In the First World War our child’s father would have seen horse-drawn artillery. He would have fought in squalid, muddy trenches no further from the enemy than a shell could be fired. Today’s warfare is fought like a computer game with operatives behind desks directing drones to targets half way across the globe, and going home afterwards for a shower and a change of clothes.

To send a message, our child would have posted a letter or, more likely, a postcard. There were several daily collections and deliveries and local mail got to its destination very quickly. Not quite as fast as a tweet, admittedly, although probably

the message on a postcard was about the same length. The first public phone box did not appear until after WW1. Many homes did not possess a phone of their own until after WW2.

Our child would have been middle-aged by the time Yuri Gagarin made the first manned flight into space and into their 80’s before Easyjet was founded. Yet those events would surely give them a hint of what could come in the next hundred years. Already we scan our boarding pass from our mobile. How might we access our seat on the shuttle to Mars for our summer holiday?

Today, scientists can move matter from one location to another at the press of a button. Only an atom, to be fair, but it’s a step towards making real Star Trek’s famous transporter. If I could live another hundred years, for me nothing would beat being able to say “Beam Me Up, Scotty!” and it actually happening. For a future generation, I bet it will.
