Writing the last intro in July I was looking out at torrential rain and gale force winds. Now Autumn is upon us and it’s 27° outside!

Annoying as it may be we must mention the festive season...this is the last edition before the Christmas magazine so please get in touch as soon as possible if you have an event that you want to publicise.

We are very excited to announce the launch of our sixth magazine! NG14 will be delivered to the villages of Lowdham, Woodborough, Calverton and Burton Joyce. This takes our circulation to 70,000 homes and businesses. To get anything in this mag please give us a call.

As many employers recognise, there are times when it will be necessary to consider taking disciplinary action against an employee. However, problems within the process can often leave an employer exposed to a claim at the employment tribunal, usually for unfair dismissal.

Angela Shaw, employment solicitor at Massers Solicitors in Nottingham, is advising employees of the need to understand their rights during a disciplinary process and also for employers to understand their obligations.

An employer should have a written disciplinary procedure which clearly outlines what is deemed to be unacceptable in the workplace, what measures can be taken and the process that will be followed. The procedure should be clearly communicated to the workforce and a copy easily accessible.

In some instances, a minor disciplinary issue could be dealt with informally as a means of resolving the problem as amicably as possible. However, more serious issues should be dealt with formally and the employer will need to ensure that it has complied with its obligations, which will also include writing

to the employee providing details of the allegations, arranging a meeting (where the employee can be accompanied by a work colleague or a trade union representative), investigating all the information and evidence gathered and allowing the right of appeal against any decision made. It may also be necessary, in extreme cases and only as a last resort, to suspend the employee on full pay in order to carry out a thorough investigation.

There must be a genuine reason or suspicion to instigate the process, it simply cannot be used as a means to terminate employment on fabricated gross misconduct allegations, such as to avoid the costs of a redundancy or to remove an employee quickly! Where an employer fails to follow a proper process and dismissal results, an employee may have grounds to issue a complaint at the employment tribunal for unfair dismissal in addition to any other relevant claim at the time of issue. A claim should usually be issued within three months’ of the termination date but an employee should seek legal advice as soon as possible. Employers should also seek advice before commencing the process to avoid incurring the time, cost and inconvenience of defending a later claim.

It’s never too early to book for Christmas and with such great value there’s no better place than The Waggon & Horses on Mansfield Road in Redhill, Arnold.

The Christmas menus are hot off the press and have been eagerly anticipated this year. In the last 12 months there’s been lots of changes at The Waggon and the food offering has gone from strength to strength. The pub is expecting to be busy so early booking is highly recommended. Menus are not only available from the bar but you can see them online by visiting www.pubpeople.com and clicking on the The Waggon’s logo.

The menu has been pain-stakingly put together by the Pub People’s catering team and we think it’s the best value three course Christmas Fayre around. Priced at only £15.99 for an adult and £9.99 for a child we think you’ll agree the selection of starters, mains and desserts is amazing!

As well as running the Christmas Fayre menu, Manager Lorraine and her team are offering a lunchtime special menu with three courses for a bargain price of only £8.99. The Christmas lunchtime special menu will be available during the same period as the main menu but only available during the afternoon.

Lorraine, who’s been manager of the pub for over three years now, says “We appreciate that our main Christmas Fayre menu could be too much for some during the daytime, so we decided to offer a lighter and less intimidating menu for those wishing to dine at lunch.”

Bookings for both the Christmas Fayre menus are now being taken and you can find the booking form on the back of the menu.

If you fancy winning you and your family Christmas dinner next year, you can enter the pubs competition this Christmas, and have one less thing to worry about next year. To enter simply answer the following question “On the ninth day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me?” Is it A) Lords a-leaping B) Ladies dancing or C) Geese a-laying.

All you have to do is email your answer A, B or C to [email protected] remembering to leave The Waggon as the email subject. Winners will be notified in the new year and you can enter as many times as you like.

You will receive a confirmation email so you know we have received your entry. Good luck and merry Christmas.

Christmas at the Waggon is Looking Good!

Add the spices, salt and flour & mix well. Gradually add enough warm water to make a thick batter. Best done by hand. The mixture should hold together and not be runny. Heat about 1cm oil in a deep frying pan. Once hot, fry spoonfuls of the mixture. Turn half way through so they are golden brown. This only takes a few minutes. Drain on kitchen paper and serve with a mint yogurt dip

and mango c h u t n e y . You can vary the veg. These are a great way to get kids eating a variety of veg.

I really like the idea of a weekly veg box delivery, so when Red Earth Organics offered me a box I jumped at the chance. I have to say I was really impressed with the quality, variety and freshness of the produce. A box like the one pictured is £11. I think this is great value. These recipes are all from the goodies I received in the box. Red Earth Organics can be reached on 07794 467545.

Spotters go batty for new species

Gedling Borough Council’s fifth Bat Walk was a huge success with attendees observing a record number of rare bats uncommon to the area.

Held at Arnot Hill Park on 22 August, the annual walk was part of Bat Day which was part of the council’s school holiday activity programme.

The Bat Walk was a popular attraction and was attended by parents and children who were given special bat detectors, provided by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and South Nottinghamshire Bat Group who also organised the day.

Among the many numbers of bats spotted, the Common Pipistrelle Bat, the Soprano Pipistrelle Bat, Brandt’s/Whiskered Bat and the Daubenton’s Bat were identified, which are not bats usually found in urban places such as Arnold.

Gedling Borough Council Mayor, Cllr Sandra Barnes, who attended the Bat Walk said: “This year, we were all taken by surprise as two Noctule Bats were seen feeding on insects over the pond, which was a great visual display. These bats are certainly not common in areas such as Arnot Hill Park and are generally found in or around woodland areas, hunting over fields. It was certainly another well attended bat walk, enjoyed by all.”

To encourage bats on the park, Park Rangers have put a number of bat boxes in place in tree canopies around the park and there will be more boxes assembled this winter. If you would like to find out more about the council’s Bat Walk and/or would like to attend, please contact Gedling Borough Council’s leisure department on 0115 901 3601.

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

At midday on the 7th July 1817, a young woman of 17 called Elizabeth or “Betsy” Sheppard left her home in Papplewick that she shared with her mother. Betsy was dressed in her best clothes wearing a new pair of shoes and carring a yellow umbrel-la. She walked to Mansfield to try and find work as a servant.

About 6pm Betsy started on her return journey with a light step, happy that she had managed to find employment. Her mother expecting her home, walked out to the Mansfield Road as far as the New-stead Toll Bar where they had arranged to meet. Her mother spotted Betsy in the distance before she disappeared from sight due to a dip in the road. Her mother continued to wait but she did not reappear. After some time, the only person to appear was a man carrying a yellow umbrella who passed through the toll gate and contin-ued in the direction of Nottingham.

Betsy’s mother was becoming worried and set off to try and find her daughter. It was getting dark and she had no success so returned home.

The following morning some quarry men on their way to work noticed a halfpenny on the ground and decided to look if any other money had been dropped. To their hor-ror they found the mangled body of Betsy Sheppard, with considerable head injuries, lying in the ditch at the side of the road with a blood stained hedge post at her side. A

couple out riding in a gig passed the spot at this time, they also saw the body and immediately rode to fetch the police.

The police found that her shoes and um-brella were missing and using these as clues they started enquires in the area. They found that a Charles Rotherham, a scissor grinder from Sheffield, had stayed at the Three Crowns at Redhill the previ-ous night and that he had tried to sell the shoes before singing two songs to enter-tain the other guests. In the morning he left and was caught on the bridge over the canal at Loughborough.

Rotherham confessed to the crime and after being convicted of Betsy’s murder was hanged on Gallows Hill, Nottingham (near where St Andrews Church stands today at the junction of For-est Road and Mans-field Road) on 28th July 1817. Betsy’s body was interred in

Papplewick church yard near the church tower.

Betsy’s murder had a massive impact on the local community. In Feburary 1819, a stone was placed on the spot where she had been killed, between Thieves Wood and Rickets Lane on the east side of the A60. It is still there today. It was paid for by Mr Anthony Buckles and other Mans-field residents. Twice her stone has been moved due to road widening and on each occasion her ghost has been reported walking on this stretch of the A60 haunting the place in which she was killed.

Betsy Sheppard and the Three Crowns by Bob Massey

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from any one with more details of the above people or information on the various places.Email: [email protected] or post via NG5 magazine.

Hello

Welcome to the autumn edition of the newsletter. As this hits your doormats the nights will be getting darker earlier and the temperatures dropping too. I do hope that the forthcoming winter is not too cold!

Looking back to the last year, I would sincerely like to thank Bob Tait for masterfully chairing the Arnold Local Area Forum. Unfortunately due to other commitments and personal reasons Bob resigned from the ALAF at the last AGM. He made a significant contribution to the ALAF and dutifully carried out all the actions that were allocated to him. On behalf of all the ALAF members, I wish Bob the very best wishes for the future. At the last ALAF Annual General meeting, the following office bearers were elected:

Chairman - Carol Pepper | Vice Chair - Alan LangtonSecretary - Janet Peet | Treasurer - Mel ShepherdSteering Group Members: Joy Bamling; Christena Creamer; Rita Marsden; Josie Mangham, and Pauline Allan

I would like to thank the team for electing me and look forward to supporting the ALAF and local communities during my term of office.

In terms of activities we had enjoyable Carnival and AKRA fun days that were both well attended despite the annoying weather! Yes, the weather disrupted many planned days, and also marred

the planned “Picnic in the Park” days. The ALAF is considering proposals to organise two intergenerational community events – a sports day and a Picnic in the Park. I would very much welcome your views on these and also any other suggestions for community events. Remember that we (the ALAF) are here to serve you!

Finally, as the nights draw in, may I please remind you to lock your shed, leave a light on when you go out in the evening, and maybe get your flu jab!

Campaign for faster broadband in Nottinghamshire

Too many households and businesses in Nottinghamshire are still suffering from very poor broadband speeds. This is frustrating for many of us but potentially disastrous for businesses who rely on the intranet to sell goods and services.People who want to work from home, students studying online, farmers, community groups, rural firms – all these and many others are increasingly at a disadvantage as competitors in other parts of the UK and abroad get superfast broadband services before we do.If you are one of the 116,000 homes and businesses affected by slow broadband please back Nottinghamshire County Council’s campaign for Superfast Broadband for Notts. You can do this by pledging online at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk or by phoning – 08449 80 80 80.

The campaign is supported by the district councils, chamber of commerce and federation of small businesses.

It takes just 2 minutes to register your details. They’ll be used as evidence to lobby the telecoms companies to prioritise Nottinghamshire’s broadband “slow spots”.

Nottinghamshire County Council runs a weekly work club in Arnold that meets at Arnold Library every Tuesday afternoon from 1 till 3pm. The main aim of the Club is to help unemployed people to find work by making the most of local knowledge and resources. The Work Club provides unemployed people with a place to meet and exchange skills, find opportunities, make contacts, share experiences and receive support to help them in their return to work.

Work clubs give people the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts, share job hunting experiences and get advice on job search, job applications, interview techniques, CV’s , volunteering and training opportunities. Themed sessions and guest speakers have

also been introduced, which include local employers, healthy living advice, local training and support provision, confidence building workshops.

The Work Clubs are led by key volunteers some of whom are looking for work themselves whilst others have an interest in employment and skills but are not looking for work. Each work club needs a couple of volunteers with others waiting in the wings. We have training available for volunteers so they can develop their skills and confidence levels.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Work Club, no appointment is necessary, just turn up. For further information or to volunteer your time, contact Denise Stephenson on 07775588756 or email [email protected]

Vernon Coaker MP Does Blindfolded Walk

Vernon Coaker Member of Parliament for Gedling

2A Parkyn Road, DaybrookNottingham NG5 6BG

Email: [email protected]: 0115 920 4224Fax: 0115 920 4500

Please get in touch if you think I can help

During the summer, I was pleased to help the Guide Dogs organisation raise awareness of the difficulties faced by local people with sight loss.

I took a blindfolded walk, with a guide dog, along Mapperley Top to experience at first-hand what obstacles blind and partially sighted people face as they go out and about in our town centres. The hazards they face often include tables and chairs on pavements outside cafes, badly designed pedestrian crossings and poorly parked cars that block the way. It was a really interesting experience and it has made me think much more about the ways in which we can all help reduce the difficulties. Things such as the positioning of street furniture and inconsiderate parking can make a real difference.

The work of Guide Dogs is impressive. I hope everyone in Arnold will support them in any way they can. See more at www.guidedogs.org.uk

Strokeability is a 12 week gentle exercise programme specifically designed for people living with stroke.

The Programme includes exercise, relaxation, advice and information about local support services. It provides an opportunity for people to work towards a healthier lifestyle, meet other people living with stroke and hopefully

have some fun! It is led by suitably qualified and experienced leisure instructors.

This is delivered 2 or 3 times per year in Gedling Borough Council Leisure Centres, dependent on the demand. If you would like further information or would like to take part, please contact Sue on 01636 815 338 / 0785 154 0547 / [email protected]

Following a successful summer of sport Absolute Triathlon Club based at Southglade Leisure Centre in Bestwood are now holding weekly training sessions for children aged 8 – 14 years.

The triathlon sessions take place every Thursday evening from 5pm until 7.15 pm and cover swim, bike and run training. All children, including beginners, are welcome to come for a free trial however they must be able to swim a minimum of 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike.

Head Coach Steve Lloyd commented “Triathlon has seen a surge in popularity over the last few years and took centre

stage at the London 2012 Olympics where British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee took Gold and Bronze respectively. The sport is great for kids as the fun bit is training across the 3 different sports of swimming, biking and running.”

The sessions form part of Nottingham’s hugely successful Absolute Triathlon Club which launched in 2009 and has subsequently won a raft of awards including the Nottingham Sports Club of the Year.

The club will cater for all abilities with three different training squads; Foundation, Development and Performance which will involve beginners to the sport as well as really push those showing talent in the sport. Leading the coaching will be Steve Lloyd who is the current British Triathlon Federation (BTF) Performance-Development Coach of the Year and is also the regional head coach for the BTF West Midlands Regional Academy.

Children can trial for the club during the year that they turn eight, h o w e v e r they need to be able to swim 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike. The new club runs from 5 pm to 7.15 pm every Thursday evening at Southglade Leisure Centre throughout the year and the session covers all 3 disciplines. Sessions cost around £5.25 with a discount for siblings. For further information please contact the Club Secretary Jayne Lloyd on 0115 9607912 or e-mail [email protected]

Congratulations to all those who took part and also to those swimmers who competed at the Chesterfield Open Meeting on the same day.Nottingham Hospital Charity DonationFollowing on from David Fortescue being chosen as one of the Torch Bearers for the London Olympics, he suggested that it might be a good idea for him to visit other swimming clubs in the Nottinghamshire area, dressed in his full Torch Bearer Kit with the Torch, where he could offer a photo opportunity for a small fee to raise money for our chosen charity!David’s fantastic efforts managed to raise £200.00 which was presented to E38 Ward Staff on a visit to Queens Medical centre. Many thanks to everyone who contributed, it is much appreciated.Up and Coming GalasSeptember was the start of a very hectic gala season which continues well into December. Being a victim of burglary can be extremely upsetting and violating.

A stranger has broken into your home and laid their hands on your things, often taking some of your most prized possessions in the process.

A number of burglaries have occurred in daylight hours in the area recently. Some are break-ins, where the culprits have broken through a door or a window to gain entry.

However, some thieves have simply capitalised on home owners leaving their doors or windows open or unlocked.

Residents are reminded to ensure their homes and outbuildings are secure, even if you are inside or in the back garden.

Offi cers have been carrying out increased patrols in the area to tackle the problem and they have noticed that some people leave keys in the locks of their double glazing windows.

Opportunist thieves will think of nothing of putting a hole through the window to unlock it and get in. Take the keys out and put them in a safe place to ensure you don’t become a victim.

Motorists are also urged to lock up their vehicles following a series of thefts from vehicles.

In many of the incidents, there is no damage to the car and it would appear as though thieves have got in because the owner has left it unlocked.

Make sure your motor is secure and ensure nothing is left on view inside. A sat nav, a shopping bag, or even an item of clothing can act as bait to thieves.

Business Spotlight....

Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Club: Arnold & Sherwood

method1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, GM2. Beat the low-fat spread with the caster sugar, gradually adding the egg. Sieve in the flour and baking powder and beat again adding the finely grated zest of both lemons. 2. Pour into a loaf mould, lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven for 60 minutes until a skewer inserted into the thickest part comes out clean.3. When the cake is cooked - remove from the oven and pour over the juice from the 2 lemons and sprinkle with sugar, allow to cool and then serve cold.

Your name: Jo Polkey

How did you first get into your line of work? I was originally a member of Rosemary Conley classes in Carlton. I

found the advert to become a franchisee in one of the Rosemary Conley magazines and decided to give it a go.

How did you get to where you are now? I needed to undertake full training to be an exercise to music instructor and also in nutrition and weight management. Once I’d completed the training I launched my classes in January 2010. Since then I have been running 10 classes a week across the Arnold, Sherwood and Bulwell areas.

How have you found advertising in ng magazines? I’ve advertised in the ng magazines since I opened my business and it has brought me a significant number of new members, so much so that I intend to keep an advert in every edition.

What did you want to be when you were growing up & would you still like to be that now? When I was growing up I always wanted to work with people. That led me into nursing and then nursing management. After 23 years in the NHS I decided I needed a challenge and a change. This has taken me back to what I always wanted to do...work with people.

What’s your signature dish and what’s the recipe? I make a lovely Lemon Drizzle Cake...it’s a very low fat version and one of Rosemary’s recipes (see recipe below)

Lemon Drizzle Cake

View how to make it on www.Rosemaryconley.tv

Tips: Line the bottom of the loaf mould with a strip of parchment paper to make it easier to lift out when cooked.

On the 21 July, GEM ladies packed up their bags and headed up to Calver to take part in a Barbershop singing retreat with Sally McLean, the renowned chorus director of the White Rosettes, multiple time winners of UK barbershop competition.

A lot of laughs, tea, singing and frolics were had by all and I would like to thank everyone who made it such a fantastic weekend.

GEM also sang at the Derby Beer Festival on 11 July to encouraging crowds, startling them into silence with Bad Romance to begin with, and cheered into an encore after the last song. It was a successful night for all, including the two new recruits who completed their first sing out that night – congratulations! GEM are now preparing for Biddulph music festival on 6 October and of course the UK Barbershop convention in October.

The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) holds a National Convention annually with many choruses taking part each year. Each chorus is marked on their choice of music, presentation and quality of the singing. GEM Connection have been practising hard and are looking to improve on last year’s scores.

The Chorus meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email [email protected] or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986.

Come along and see how GEM sparkles!

GEM Connection Ladies Barbershop Chorus kick off

summer with a bang!

There was great excitement when members of the Nottinghamshire branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild were asked to exhibit their textile art at Vernon Park for the Royal visit. Like the Queen, the Nottinghamshire Branch of the Guild is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary this year. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to see the display and Eileen Tilley presented the Duchess with a textile posy trimmed with lace and a lace butterfly. Many people at the event enjoyed seeing the varied work of the group on display. Some members are new to embroidery; others have been members of the Guild for over 25 years. The group meets monthly in the city centre and there is usually a speaker. The topics are very varied and it is fascinating to see the work of others and hear of what inspired them. This year they look forward to talks about using recycled materials, lace and the recreation of Lady Peacocks dress. Some of the members go to Sherwood Community centre for weekly evening classes and/or a monthly workshop. The Embroiderers’ Guild is a registered charity. There are many other activities and events in the region that members can enjoy. This friendly group meet at the Nottingham Mechanics, North Sherwood Street on the first Tuesday of the month at 1-30pm. If you have a love of and an interest in textiles why not come along? Visitors are very welcome. For more information contact - Judith Hanley: Tel - 0115 9531695 Email - [email protected] Web site http://www.emreg.org.uk/branches/nottinghamshire

Six Green Flags in a row for Arnot Hill

Park!Arnot Hill Park in Arnold has been awarded a Green Flag for an amazing sixth year in a row.

The Green Flag Award is a national award which recognises the best parks and green spaces in the country, and is a sign of an excellent, well managed and customer friendly park.

The latest award came from an unannounced visit by a Green Flag Judge, which thanks to high scores in previous years’ assessments meant the council qualified for the park to be judged during a ‘mystery shopper’ visit.

The park has continued to evolve over the last year, with a number of projects recently completed, including a new landscaped area to both sides of the front entrance in January, solar panels installed to the Civic Centre, and Jubilee Depot and new reed beds installed on the lake to improve wildlife biodiversity.

Gedling Borough Council works closely with the Friends of Arnot Hill Park to manage and maintain the park. It is a popular visitor attraction with a range of facilities for the family, including a wildlife pond with a range of popular and rare breed birds, refreshment kiosk, a skate park and play area, rose and sensory gardens, ball court and aviary.

If you are interested in becoming a Friend of Arnot Hill Park, please contact the Park Rangers on 0115 901 3636.

Bush takes over from long serving Roy Francis who stepped down from the post. Roy takes over the vacant post of the clubs President

Great Start to SeasonArnold Town kicked off the new season with two victories before losing to Holbeach Utd in the FA Cup. They made progress in the FA Vase beating Thurnby Nirvana 5-3 to set up a tie with Heanor Town in the 2nd Qualifying round but they struggled in the league losing the next six games.

The Reserves have started in extraordinary style scoring five times in each of their first four games in the NSL Division One.Arnold’s Academy side opened their

season with a defeat 1-3 at home to Staveley MW u19’s, one of the division’s top sides last season.

Arnold Town Supporters Club

NHS Nottinghamshire County and Gedling Borough Council are pleased to announce that building work has started on a state of the art Health Centre for the community of Arnold. This is a major boost for the regeneration of Arnold town centre and when complete, the Health Centre will provide improved primary care facilities and an increased range of community services via this £4 million medical centre with an integrated pharmacy in the heart of Arnold.

The Highcroft Surgery of Dr Gard & Partners will be located in the new premises, which will also provide additional clinical space for community services.

The new two storey building is expected to be completed in September 2013. The modern building has been designed to be environmentally friendly, incorporating solar panels and will be rated ‘excellent’ for energy use. It will also have undercroft parking.

For the duration of the build, the Croft Road car park, which has around 35 spaces, will be closed. However, shoppers can use the nearby Arnold Leisure Centre car park during this time, and can look forward to a refurbished Croft Road car park with better layout and signage once work on the health centre has been fi nished. The Shopmobility scheme will still operate from the Wood Lane end of the car park.

Building starts on new Arnold Health Centre

Whether your lawn is the size of a postage stamp or a football pitch, to keep it looking green and gorgeous requires some care and attention. In our house the most the lawn ever gets is a mow every few days during the spring and summer...and it does show.

I have since learnt that grass never stops growing it just slows down and we should really keep mowing at least monthly through Autumn and Winter subject to dry conditions.

For some more tips on improving the state of my lawn I contacted our good friends at Green Thumb and David Kelly has kindly given me some great tips which I am delighted to share with you....

Autumn is a very important time of the year for lawn maintenance.

Scarification This is an essential part of lawn maintenance. We scarify to remove matted growth and thatch both of which are detrimental to a lawn, thinning out the thatch improves the plants growing conditions and it also reduces one of the causes of moss. It can be done with a specialist hand tool or a machine.

AerationPut simply aeration is making holes in the lawn to let carbon dioxide out of the soil and allow oxygen in.

Compaction and sub-surface thatch are two of the main problems on lawns by restricting water, air and nutrients getting through.

Hollow-tine aeration is the most effective way of reducing these problems by removing thousands of cores out of the lawn, allowing the roots to spread enabling them to receive nutrients.

Aeration stimulates and encourages root growth and can be done with a garden fork or a special mechanical aerator.

Re seedAny worn/bare patches caused by the summer wear can be re-seeded now.

LeavesPrevent accumulation of fallen leaves by removing them from the lawn weekly otherwise the grass will struggle to survive and diseases may establish themselves.

....Blimey, thanks for all those tips Dave. I had no idea there was so much involved. For those of us with very little time (or inclination!) companies like Green Thumb offer a great lawn care service and it really doesn’t cost the earth. For more information on lawn care or to get Dave and his team round to help just give them a call on 0115 965 4743.

Bereft of O-levels, Nottingham native Ben Zabulis left Claremont School age 16 to begin an engineering career, leading eventually to sixteen years of overseas employment. In Chartered Territory Ben charts that personal and professional journey.

The book is a rich and diverse account of sixteen years spent living and working abroad as an engineer, from the chaos of everyday life in Lagos to the unique Hong Kong via the conformity of life in Japan and the wonders of the Indian sub-continent.

Ben describes the lifestyle inherent in such an overseas posting – the emphasis very much on cultural anomalies and humour. The book is easy to read and light-hearted, Boy’s-Own-style exploits interwoven, where relevant, with local colour and history. Ben hopes the book may offer similar inspiration to the student, gap-year traveller or young professional seeking opportunity, by way of adventure and exploration, abroad.

One step closer for a Gedling Country Park

Gedling residents could soon have some extra open space to enjoy as plans for a country park in Gedling take shape.

Gedling Borough Council has long since had an ambition to turn the land of the former Gedling Colliery into a country park and after some careful negotiation there may be an opportunity to make it happen.

The Council is working with UK Coal, who owns the site, and an agreement in principle has been reached to transfer the ownership of the land from them to the Council.

Work is now being planned to carry out a range of surveys to assess the condition of the land to see if it’s suitable and to plan the potential layout of a country park on the site. Pending the results of these land surveys, it is possible that the park could open to the public in the spring of 2013, once work to create a car park and pathways around the edge of the land has been completed.

After this initial opening, the Council would draw on the various funding sources it has identified, potentially totalling £1 million, to develop the land into a country park. Although this will be done in a phased approach over several years, residents could expect to see a better path network, a children’s play area, interpretation boards and even a visitors’ centre over time.

Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: “We are really excited to be working with UK Coal on the transfer of this important site to the Council. Although we’re only in the early stages of the process, we are delighted at the prospect of another country park in Gedling for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
