FREE PAINT SCHEME
Nottinghamshire County Council run a Community RePaint scheme at Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop Recycling Centres. Public donations of paint accepted at these sites are checked by the site staff and any tins that contain good quality reusable paint are put aside in a designated shelved paint cabin. This reusable paint is then given away free of charge, throughout the year, to community and voluntary groups registered on the scheme. The paint cabins are filling up well with reusable paint so we’re inviting groups to apply so that they can get their hands on some free paint. Over 100 groups have received around 12,000 litres of reusable paint so far but we’re always keen to help even more. For more information go to:

Old- a continuously operating lending library since 1816- housed in a splendid Georgian town house in Angel Row built 1752- home to the first photographic studio in Nottingham which operated from 1841 to 1955. New-a full electronic catalogue available on line. Giving access to details of the 40,000 books and maps, audio and music CDs in our collection.- around 800 new titles added each year. Borrowed- the great majority of Bromley House Library’s remarkable collection of books, both fiction and non-fiction, built up over the life of the Library, are available for loan.
Bromley House Library is a wonderful resource in the city centre accommodated in a fine Georgian house with a delightful garden and large, comfortable reading rooms.
It represents a living history and cultural tradition. The tranquil atmosphere is probably why most people join Bromley House Library and certainly why they stay in membership. It
appeals to a variety of people whether as a rich resource for research and access to older books, or for the latest novel or non-fiction book. It is a library for all who like books and old buildings and offers social events and lectures. Bromley House Library is that unique thing, old and yet modern, a flourishing independent lending library in the era of the ipad.
Very well worth a visit.

Hello, my name is Annie Yates and I am delighted that I have been appointed as the new Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Sherwood and Hyson Green.
On 1 May I took over from Inspector Gurmit Kaur. I am keen to continue the excellent work Gurmit and the team have done over the past six years and I look forward to meeting some of you soon.
I first joined Nottinghamshire Police in 1983 but had a break in service while my children were young. Since rejoining I have worked as a Response Officer, a Neighbourhood Beat Sergeant, on the Child Abuse Investigation Unit and in Community Protection.
My focus is now firmly fixed on working with partners and the local community to continue to reduce crime, the fear of crime and anti social behaviour within the Sherwood and Hyson Green area. I am aware that the recent attempted armed robbery at the Mansfield Rd Co op will have caused some fear and anxiety in the local community. I want to reassure people that these types of crimes are relatively rare and we have increased patrols in the area.If anyone has information about this crime or any other we would urge them to contact us or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. PCSO Kaeron Harris is the new dedicated officer for the shops and businesses along the stretch of Mansfield Road covered by our area.
Over the next few weeks Kaeron will be visiting all the premises, providing contact details and seeking opinions and information about the issues that are affecting people living, visiting and working in the area.
Kaeron will be supported by Sergeant Nick Wealthall and the rest of the team. We hope you find the high visibility presence reassuring and that it provides ease of contact to the beat team. The new Sherwood Contact Point, based beneath the library on Mansfield Road is now being used by the beat team and Neighbourhood watch committee members. You can meet a member of the beat team there every Saturday between 12 midday and 1pm and every Wednesday evening between 6pm and 7pm. Please take the opportunity to raise any issues with a member of staff. We also publish all public surgeries on the Nottinghamshire Police website. To contact the beat team directly please e-mail [email protected]
Please let us know the issues that matter most to you by completing the Neighbourhood Priority Survey. Please help us to share key information with you about your area by signing up to the Neighbourhood Alert system.
To contact me directly please call 101 ext 802 4460 or email [email protected]

Readers are invited to what promises to be a fabulous night out - whilst helping a Nottinghamshire animal charity help vulnerable animals.Incredibly, ‘Elvis’ is due to perform at Lowdham Village Hall at 7pm on Saturday 15 June! Tickets are just £10 each including a light supper, with the audience invited to bring their own drinks. Contact Lorraine on 07530-023543 for tickets – the profits from which all help the charity.
Bargain-hunters meanwhile can enjoy browsing and getting something unique – again whilst helping the charity. Eve, the owner of Farnsfield Vintage Emporium, has kindly offered Animal Accident Rescue Unit space in her shop to fundraise. Good condition china, ornaments, books, curios are all welcome. In addition, unwanted display units or cases and tables are needed to display the goods. Can you help with either? If so, please contact Bernice on 01623-847225 (evenings and weekends), or via email at [email protected].
All fundraising helps animals such as sweet cat, Bugsy who was rescued in a very poor state as a stray in late 2012. After dedicated care from Animal Accident Rescue Unit volunteers, he is feeling much better. Aged somewhere between 6 to 12 years old,
he is neutered, vaccinated, flea and worm treated, micro-chipped and litter-trained. As an FIV positive cat, he must live indoors but is still a truly lovely cat and deserves a chance as he makes a perfect companion to someone with a quieter home! To find out more about him, please ring 0115-920 5172 after 6.30pm or email [email protected] with your contact details and postcode. Please note this telephone number must not be used for any other enquiry including non emergency calls. For general information and all other matters, please call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-932 1555.

In April, approximately 20 cadets, staff and committee set out for Asda in Arnold to help raise money for 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron.
They proved that the youth of today can display commitment to even the most difficult of tasks. Bag packing may not sound difficult, but believe me, you only mix the frozen goods with vegetables once!
The Cadets stayed enthusiastic right until the end. They were extremely polite to the customers and got on well with the Asda staff working on the tills who were all really friendly to all the cadets.
All the customers that had their bags packed were very pleased with the cadet’s work and many sang their praises to our staff.
An amazingly productive weekend for 2418 ATC Squadron, well done to all who took part and a very big thank you to Asda and their staff!

Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club was started by a group of enthusiasts in 1978 and has been a regular sight around Notts and Derbys for 35 years. It is believed to be unique in the UK as the only balloon club with membership open to the general public. The club is a non-proft making sports club run by volunteers. Members get a chance to get involved in all aspects of flying balloons. No previous experience is needed as the club runs regular members training evenings and also other social events. We own two complete balloons and mainly fly locally from 6 different launch sites. In previous years members have attended balloon meets in the USA, India, France, Ireland and even Australia. In 2005 we flew our balloon across the English Channel for a charity event. In July 2011 we attended a meet at Chambley in France and helped set a new world record for the largest simultaneous launch of hot air balloons. The club’s balloon has been featured live on the BBC Breakfast Show and was also once used for an episode of the ITV drama Boon filmed in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. We sometimes get asked to inflate our balloons at local shows and fetes and also at wedding receptions. We are currently looking to recruit some extra members so we can fly more often. For enquiries about club membership telephone 0115 8541028.

SPICE Girl and stage sensation Melanie C is inviting wannabe specs wearing superstars in Nottinghamshire to compete for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2013 title and a holiday to St Lucia.
Melanie has teamed up with Specsavers and anti-bullying charity Kidscape to bring specs wearers into focus at the Oscars of the glasses world.
Janet Archer, store director at Specsavers in Hucknall, says: ‘We see so many people in the store who look absolutely amazing in their glasses. The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition gives us the opportunity to prove that glasses are fabulous at any age by celebrating the specs wearers right on our doorstep who wear them with pride and plenty of style.’
To be in with a chance of meeting Melanie and scooping the biggest accolade in the specs-wearing world, male and female specs wearers can enter the competition online, www.specsavers.co.uk/loveglasses, via Facebook, www.facebook.com/specsavers, or at their nearest Specsavers store.
There are four age categories – 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. A winner from each category will win a VIP makeover and will attend the grand final in London, where the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year will be announced.

Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large
saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers.
Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.

Are you thriving... or surviving..?
Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems……. Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough,
we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive as
easily. Parks Therapy (PICT) offers a unique experience which is comfortable and rapid offering thorough, and lasting change. Available at Nottingham Natural Health Centre, Carrington.

Tui Na Massage Tui Na is much more than the ordinary massage you receive in a beauty salon.
It is based on the age old principles of Chinese medicine and aims to open up energy pathways, eliminating stagnation and restoring the balance of the body. Its benefits are wide ranging and not only in the treatment of muscular-skeletal ailments. It can play a big part in preventing illnesses and in combating the aging process by strengthening the immune system and calming the mind. All the while keeping muscles supple, joints flexible and balancing the energies of the body, it also stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms'. Tui Na is applied fully dressed and that’s why suitable for everybody, regardless their religion, sex, age or nationality. Tui Na is fairly new to the UK, but used in China for thousands of years. There are countless testimonials to its effectiveness. It is relaxing and releases tensions, built up in daily life or, used specifically for aches and pains like migraine, headache, sciatica, arthritis, frozen shoulder, knee pain, back ache, sports injuries and more. NewsIt has been a very busy year for Sherwood and Mapperley Park Neighbourhood Watch, we recently moved from our temporary office to our new permanent home at the Safer Sherwood site, just a little way from Sherwood library. Our previous Chair, Ivan Jacoby, has retired after a long and very successful career. He was very active, devoted and highly respected, he will be very much missed. He campaigned long and hard for a Police and Neighbourhood Watch base and we are all very grateful to him, the Safer Sherwood office is his legacy to us and we aim to do him proud. We now have a fantastic new Chair and some great new ideas on making Sherwood a safer and closer community.

in Bloom initiative. A project of this type was launched in the Meadows where not only did the local environment look absolutely stunning, but it also had a dramatic effect on crime rates. We are looking for anyone with skills, knowledge or expertise to work with us on this project. We are also keen to hear from any local business who may wish to make a donation to the project. The Nottingham in Bloom Coordinator is Michael Tracey: [email protected] or 0115 962 3350 after 6pm.
CommunityShould you wish to talk to us regarding the Nottingham in Bloom Project, would like information or advice or would like to set up a scheme in your street we hold a drop in session every Saturday from 12.00-1.00 at the Safer Sherwood office.

The Godfather of all Pizza’s!Ng magazines have been delivering flyers for Godfather Pizzas in Carrington for years. The pictures on the flyers always look delicious and when the owner, Matey, drops them off we always tease him and ask for some free samples.
After a particularly stressful day out with the family recently we decided to give in to temptation and order some pizzas from Godfather.
There are over 20 pizzas to choose from or you can free style and create your own from a huge list of toppings. You then have to decide on thin crust, deep pan or a flavoured base and whether you want 9”, 12” or 14”! Decisions, decisions.....
We opted for a classic - pepperoni delight and something a bit more unusual called a sweet lover - a bbq base covered with bbq chicken, pepperoni and extra cheese. For sides we ordered chicken strippers - no, not tassle twirling birds, but tender
pieces of chicken breast in a lovely coating. With garlic bread, wedges and onion rings we had a feast on our hands.
It is very rare for me to eat takeaway pizza. Done badly they can be soggy, greasy and tasteless. Well I can assure you that Godfather do it very well indeed!
It was all wolfed down in a matter of minutes - the stress of the day vanishing in a sea of empty cardboard trays.
Next time you fancy a takeout give Godfather a call - there should be a flyer in this very magazine with lots of special offers and FREE delivery. They won’t let you down.

A Funeral Service With A DifferenceArnold resident Stacey Dawe has recently completed training to become an Independent Funeral Celebrant with the UK College of Celebrancy.
Said Stacey “In today’s society fewer people find themselves associated to a particular church yet many hold onto either
some form of spiritual or religious beliefs. When it comes to organising a funeral quite often only a religious service or more atheist style humanist service is offered, whereas an Independent Celebrant will tailor a funeral to respect the family’s wishes making it personal and meaningful to capture the true essence, personality and character of the loved one.
The most important part of the service is that each tribute is created individually and personalised for the person who has died. I spend a lot of time with the bereaved families prior to the funeral to learn as much as possible about their loved one and I actively encourage all those who wish to take part in the service to do so, by way of spoken, written or musical tribute, or alternatively families may like to participate simply by choosing appropriate music, readings or poems”.
Stacey says her service will truly celebrate the life of the person who has died, whilst at the same time sensitively acknowledging the grief of those left behind.
You can get further information from Stacey at:www.staceydawe.vp.web.co.uk Tel: 07818 650623 Email [email protected]

John Palmer is a wills and probate executive at QualitySolicitors Yates & Co
will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.
If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.
Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.
Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process.
Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.
Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.
People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.
This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.
Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.
A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you
QualitySolicitors Yates & Co is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, no. 56526.*(not available in conjunction with any other offers)
