LOVELY LAMB!Lamb is a tasty and versatile meat. Here are three recipes using different cuts, all

easy, delicious and inexpensive. Enjoy!

Moroccan Meatballs

500g minced lamb1 x onion - finely chopped2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped2 tsp ground cumin2 tsp ground coriander1 tsp cinnamonbreadcrumbs - good handful1 egg1 dsp tomato pureesalt & pepper

methodEither use a food processor or manually mix the ingredients until well blended. Roll into walnut size balls and shallow fry until browned all over. Delicious with couscous and tomato sauce or stuffed in pitta bread with coleslaw.

500g minced lamb2 tbsp olive oil (plus oil for brushing)2 aubergines (500g) - sliced1 onion - sliced2 garlic - finely chopped400g tin chopped tomatoes1 tsp cinnamonred wine - splash50g butter, 30g flour & 350ml milk1 egg - beaten100g grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan)nutmeg - gratedsalt & pepper

methodPre-heat oven to 200°C. Brush augergine slices both sides with olive oil and place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins then turn and bake for another 10 mins. They should be soft and golden brown. Meanwhile - gently fry the onion and garlic til soft. Turn heat up and add the lamb. Break up and brown. Then add the cinnamon and red wine - boil til liquid is absorbed. Add tinned tomatoes and season to taste. Simmer gently for 20 mins while you make the white sauce. In a small pan melt butter - add flour and stir for a minute. Remove from heat and gradually stir in milk. Over a medium heat stir until the sauce is smooth and thick. Add 2/3 of the cheese and 1 tsp grated nutmeg. Leave to cool slightly while you assemble to dish. Grease an ovenproof dish and place a layer of aubergine slices on the bottom. Pour over the lamb sauce and top with another layer of aubergines. Then beat the egg into the white sauce. Pour over the top of the dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 45 mins in oven.

Everyone who knows Sherwood also knows the excellent community spirit in this vibrant and bustling part of the city.

What many might not know about, however, is the importance of its well-established Neighbourhood Watch network.

While our neighbourhood policing teams ensure they patrol their patches as effectively as possible, we still need residents to be the eyes and ears of the community.

Neighbourhood Watch ensures that all of that essential local information is collated and shared with the police, enabling us to act upon it.

If you would like information on neighbourhood watch schemes in Sherwood, you can speak to any member of your local beat team.

We would also urge you to speak to our neighbourhood policing officers if you feel that there any particular areas of Sherwood that you would like us to patrol more frequently.

We fully understand the concerns that were voiced about the closure of the police station, but we aim to have a contact point in the town centre within the coming months.

In the meantime, our officers are making themselves as visible and accessible as possible. However, we need your input to ensure we continue to be in the

right places at the right times.Although at the time of writing Sherwood is not giving us any cause for undue concern, we are not prepared to become complacent.

We have had officers conducting patrols in the town centre to deter would-be shop thieves. We are also urging residents to avoid becoming victims of vehicle crime by taking a number of simple steps.

Firstly, do not leave valuable items like satellite navigation systems, iPods or even clothing in an unattended vehicle.Secondly, do not leave car keys on display in your home. As vehicle security has improved, the only way thieves can usually steal a car is to obtain the car keys. Keep them in a safe place at night, away from external doors and windows.

After our homes, our cars are the second biggest investment most of us make, so it pays to take note of common sense crime prevention advice.

If you have any information about crime, antisocial behaviour or suspicious activity in your area, or would like to discuss any issue about policing with a member of your neighbourhood beat team, just telephone 101.You can also contact us via our website www.nottinghamshire.police.uk or communicate with us via Twitter or Facebook. To report a crime you can also telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Community fund pot up for grabs for Nottinghamshire

residents Local communities across Nottinghamshire needing a helping hand to fund small projects, activities or improvements in their area could be entitled to a share of an annual £10,000 funding pot held by their local County Councillor. The Councillor’s Division Fund aims to benefit organisations, groups or individuals which are active in their community for one-off causes and the councillor decides which schemes in their ward should get a contribution. Recent grants include £250 for a Christmas party for local residents at a community centre, £1,000 to replace a charity shop’s glass frontage and £500 for an allotment group to develop a wild flower area. Councillor Reg Adair, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property at the County Council, said: "County Councillors are active in finding good causes in their ward for a share of their Division Fund money. However, we would encourage you to get in contact with your local councillor if you or your community group is struggling to find the money for a worthwhile one-off project or activity.” County Councillors are only able to use their fund for causes within their ward. People wishing to put forward a request for a Councillors Division Fund grant should contact their local County Councillor whose contact details are available by visiting the Council’s website at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk or by telephoning the authority on 08449 80 80 80.

As the newly elected Chair of the Sherwood and Mapperley Park Neighbourhood Watch Association (SAMPNW) I would fi rstly like to thank my predecessor Ivan Jacoby for the fi ne work he has done in making the organisation a force to be reckoned with not only in our own area but in Nottingham generally.

The task for me and my colleagues on the committee is to build on this formidable achievement. Our fi rst objective is to work with the the residents of Sherwood and Mapperley Park and the local Police to ensure our area continues to be a great place to live and work.

I want to continue the drive to set up more Neighbourhood Watch Groups but I also want to link up with other community and residents groups to ensure that we pay attention not just to the importance of tackling crime but also to the wider issues that give rise to it. In this way, I hope we can become a true ‘Neighbourhood’ organisation with a broad view of what makes our area special and what we need to do to improve it.

I would very much welcome your views so please get in touch either by e-mailing me: colin.barratt@sampnw or by writing to SAMPNW c/o Sherwood Business Centre 616a Mansfi eld Road, Sherwood, NG5 2GA and let’s get that dialogue going. In my opinion Sherwood and Mapperley Park are great places to be, with your help and participation we have a chance to make them even better.

New Cricket Ground at Goosedale

Junior CricketThere is junior coaching every single Friday from 6.30pm until 8.00pm at Goosedale right through to the last Friday in October.Goosedale Sports Club is on Goosedale Lane off Moor Rd, between Bestwood Village and Papplewick, left at the Griffins Head in Papplewick, postcode NG6 8UJ.If you are a new starter, or a young cricket novice then you are welcome to join the Club• 4 senior Bassetlaw Saturday teams, 5th team planned for 2013 season. • 4 Newark Sunday development teams.• Monday night junior nets from 6.30pm until dusk• 10 Boys and Girls League sides at every age group through the summer.• Thursday 6.30pm Girls coaching • Friday Club Night from 6.30pm at Goosedale• NAACC has the highest number of registered cricket coaches in Nottinghamshire, and the juniors are invited to attend Trent Bridge County, T20 and International fixtures.

Since April last year George Wilson and Mick Henson have been working on transforming a piece of waste ground on the Goosedale site into a new cricket ground. In July the first game is due to be played on the new wicket. With thousands of hours of volunteer time the ground has been cleared, cleaned and improved with the result that NAACC collected the National Cricketforce Award at Lords. The lastest project is to install water bore holes so that the site is self sustaining. Thanks to all the Club volunteers who support the ground improvements with their valuable time. We have kids who are working on the new ground who will be playing their first games of senior cricket on the third square in 2013, and beyond.

Girls Cricket DevelopmentNotts and Arnold Amateur Cricket Club are working with Trent Bridge Cricket Office supporting girls and womens cricket. Over the last two summers a new girls team played softball in the North Girls Cricket League, and this season we are entering an U14 Girls Team in the Nottingham Girls League and U12s Boys League also. Recruitment of new girls continued through the indoor team at Basford. This is a great opportunity to have some fun and meet new friends. All the girls attend Friday Club evening training to enjoy the atmosphere, and start to learn new skills, socialise and chat.• Thursday evenings from 6.30pm at Goosedale is Girls cricket coaching.• Over the next five years the Club will develop girls teams at each junior age group based on the NAACC youth development model.• There are 7 girls who are currently in the County squads. If you are interested joining in women and girls cricket you are welcome to attend coaching sessions. By 2014 we should have enough players to have an NAACC Ladies team.

Holiday SchemeEdge Sports Coaching are working with Notts & Arnold CC and will be running Holiday Camps throughout the Easter and Summer school holidays. Children of all ages and abilities welcome. Camps will be based in the countryside location of Goosedale, which is only 15 minutes from the city and NG5 locations. Visit www.edgesportscoaching.co.uk or call Michael Rann 07921171177.

I am Jack Burrows and I am a member of 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron, I also short track speed skate for Nottingham Ice Racing Club and compete for Team GB. I got in to speed skating after watching Dancing on Ice and asked if I could have a go at ice skating with my brothers. I was taken to the Ice Arena in Nottingham by my parents where we all had a go. I enjoyed it so much that I bugged my mum for lessons on the UK skate programme. After a couple of months of lessons I was spotted by one of the short track coaches Mandy Worth who is also the club coach for Nottingham Ice Racing Club and an ex Olympic medallist.Mandy asked if I wanted to have a go at speed skating, which I did. At first I didn’t like it due to the boots hurting my feet but after having another go I started to enjoy the thrill of going fast and I joined the club and started to compete in local competitions.

As my skating improved and my times got quicker I qualified for the European Starclass competitions. In the season 2010/11 I was selected to be part of the Great Britain development squad where I represented Great

Britain in Bormio, Italy. During this season I broke all three British Records that had stood for 8 ½ years.I won a few competitions being Junior British Open and Championships Gold Medallist and a Bronze Medallist in the European Junior Championships Finals. In my current season of 2011/12 I managed to qualify as one of the two spots to go to the Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria in January 2012.At the youth Olympics I got

personal best times in the 1000m and in the 500m. I broke the British record for Juvenile men that had stood for 11 years with a new time of 45.491 seconds. The last event was a mixed relay containing two boys and two girls. I was paired with a Chinese boy and girl, and a Korean girl. We qualified for the relay final as the second fastest team and in the final we won the gold. A first ever Youth Winter Olympic Gold Medal and the only one that team GB got.

This was the best feeling in the world! The support and motivation the Staff and Cadets from 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron have given me has really helped me to achieve my goal but most of all a GOLD Medal.

DYING TO SAVE MONEY? Many people fail to sweep their chimney or service appliances at regular intervals, either due to the fact that they are unaware of the maintenance requirements, the potential consequences, or for financial reasons. The use of an unregistered chimney sweep can be dangerous; it is only through established trade organisations such as the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps that a customer can have confidence that the job they are paying for is done correctly, and that safety checks will have been made. Upon completion, a registered chimney sweep will issue an approved certificate.

CHIMNEY FIRESUK fire statistics indicate that there are over 31,000 domestic chimney fires a year. These are largely due to infrequent sweeping which results in a build-up of flammable tar within the appliance or flue. Insurance companies may refuse claims due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a registered chimney sweep where a certificate has been issued.

As I explained in the last edition I am at best a reluctant gardener, however I harbour romantic notions of tiptoeing through the veggie beds picking plump cabbages and lovely comedy shaped carrots....so we have dedicated a third of our garden over to growing our own food.Using offcuts of tanalised decking and other odds and sods of wood that we found we have fashioned four small raised beds. Digging the soil over and sieving the pebbles out was the best upper body workout I have had in ages. After covering with heavy duty polythene to warm the soil (advice from a library book) we are ready to plan exactly what to grow.Sarah Mulholland, a Grow Your Own enthusiast whose partner discovered allotmenting in his late thirties and now runs a small veg box scheme; Red Earth Organics (01636 812105) has kindly offered the following advice on picking seeds;“Seed buying can be confusing. There are hybrid or heritage seeds, organic and non-oganic. Put simply, hybrids are developed by crossing two different plants from the same family but with different qualities like colour, size or flavour. Heritage (or heirloom) seeds come from plants that were grown historically but have not been used in modern agriculture on a large scale. Heritage plants can be selected for their ability to grow in specific soil or because the flavour or appearance is appealing. From experience I can recommend the following heritage crops:Tomatoes - Brandywine and Ivoty EggBeans - Cosse VioletteLettuce - Marvel of 4 Seasons and Black Seeded SimpsonHybrids are widely available and tend to assure reasonably certain results, predictable crops and familiar flavours, whereas heritage can give less uniform results but offer unusual flavours, colours and variety. By checking the preferred conditions of heritage you can optimise yield by selecting seeds best suited to

your soil and weather.Heritage fruit and vegetables can be relatively easy to grow and by doing so you are also helping to preserve the gene pool and prevent monoculturism.Do be prepared for mixed results. That is both the joy and the frustration of moving from the staple hybrid seeds available everywhere and the delight in discovering a new lettuce, an unfamiliar tomato or beetroot easily outweighs the frustration of a seed batch that does not flourish as you hoped.”WOW! I had no idea....

With raised beds it is better for the soil to rotate crops on a four year cycle and also to grow similar crops in each bed. So we will have carrots, parsnips & celeriac in one bed, kale, calabrese, radish and rocket in another, spinach, swiss chard beetroot and lettuce together and french beans and peas in the last bed. We are growing potatoes in a special grower and plan to use grow bags for tomatoes. After hearing what Sarah had to say about seeds I am going to try and grow some heritage crops as well as hybrids and report back.As I type there is snow on the ground so all work has stopped and we are doing plenty of research using library books and the internet to plan the various types of each vegetable we plan to buy.

Cleaning?

© Alisdair Butler at Atlanticorp Ltd

Running into spring with such mild conditions as these gives us an opportunity to start some things early. Will we be having a really long summer? I hope so! While you can, I suggest getting out there and doing some of the prep work for the maintenance you should do in summer giving you more time to relax and enjoy when it’s hot.External painting will be covered separately in the next issue.

If you have PVC-u windows, some of the older ones may have yellowed and become dirty. “De.Solv.It” make a specific cleaner which works really well on the white ones, it will really brighten up the look of your home.Clean your patios, decks and driveways of all the winter slime

now, normally just jetwashing does the trick. If you have block pavers then it’s best to use a block paving brush, you don’t want to jet out the sand keeping them in place. This is laborious and time consuming but worth it. If your deck is more than 3 years old then use Cuprinol Decking Treatment and a roller/brush with pole-really quick and easy! The inimitable Jeyes Fluid with the correct dilutions is great for much outdoor cleaning-remember the distinctive smell? If you don’t have the time/inclination you can call in the friendly local experts on 0115 8377121.Feel free to ask any questions via phone or email ([email protected]). “Like” our Facebook page for regular tips and competitions www.facebook.com/Atlanticorp

Local Author Publishes Novel

Mapperley based novelist and short story writer, Andy Szpuk has recently had his historical memoir, 'Sliding on the Snow Stone' published by Night Publishing.

The book is available online at outlets including Amazon, The Book Depository and Smashwords, and at http://www.nottinghambooks.co.uk/, the online shopping facility of The Bookcase, Nottingham’s premier independent bookshop.

Examples and links to more of Andy’s work, and other literature-related activi-ties, can be found at http://andyszpuk.wordpress.com/.

“It is astonishing that anyone lived this story. It is even more astonishing that anyone survived it. Stefan grows up in the grip of a raging famine. Stalin’s Five Year Plan brings genocide to Ukraine – millions of people starve to death. To

free themselves from the daily terrors of Soviet rule, Stefan and his

friends fight imaginary battles in nearby woods to defend their land. The games they play are their only escape. ‘Sliding on the Snow Stone’ is the true story of Stefan’s extraordinary journey across a landscape of hunger, fear and devastating loss. With Europe on the brink of World War Two, Stefan and his family pray they’ll survive in their uncertain world. They long to be free.“

If you love plants, want to share your knowledge or learn more, the Nottingham Branch of the Hardy Plant Society would love to hear from you.

Our main interest is the enjoyment of perennial or hardy plants i.e. plants that usually die back over winter and pop back up in spring. We are an active and enthusiastic group. In winter months, from October to April, we organise a programme of talks by guest speakers on the second Friday of the month in West Bridgford Community Hall, Church Drive, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 6AY at 7.30 p.m.

In the summer, when there are no monthly meetings, we arrange coach trips to inspirational gardens not generally open to the public. We have our own garden, known as The Secret Garden (pictured above), a small walled botanic garden at Wollaton Hall and Deer Park in Wollaton, Nottingham tended by a group of volunteer members for over 30 years! From Easter to the end of September the garden is open to the public on Sundays from 2-4pm. Plants grown in the garden or donated by members are sold at very reasonable prices to raise funds. Local groups/societies are welcome to visit the garden during summer afternoons or evenings. To find out more about our group, visit our website www.hardy-plant.org.uk/groups/nottingham , or contact Sylvia Bennett tel 01949 836882, email [email protected].

You want the best for your daughter but which school is right for her? Maybe it is time for you to look at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy.

Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ school with small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best out of each child, that really works. All girls are stretched and achieve more than they thought possible.

Have you concerns about class sizes? Is your daughter getting overlooked?Do teachers really know what makes her tick? Are you pleased with the progress she is making?

It is never too late to make a difference to your daughter’s education. Wouldn’t it be lovely to find a place where she is happy and achieving the best that she possibly can?

In today’s straitened economic times, there is great value to be had from having a daughter in Hollygirt even for a couple of years, and rapid progress can be made to ensure a girl reaches her potential.

Hundreds of young people will hit the streets of Nottinghamshire this summer in a pioneering flagship scheme.

National Citizen Service (NCS) is now recruiting hundreds of 15 and 16-year-olds in Nottinghamshire. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a broad range of skill building activities including team bonding events and creating their own social action projects to help their local communities in July and August.

NCS is a flagship government initiative which aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing together young people from different backgrounds to make a difference in their communities. It is a voluntary summer programme that focuses on their personal and social development including challenging

activities, such as residential experiences and a self-designed social action project. Last year more than 8,000 young people were involved in the programme across England and this year there will be up to 30,000 places available

nationwide.

The scheme starts in earnest in July, when participants will take part in camping, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and archery, on a series of residential courses in the Peak District. Teams will also talk to their communities to find out about local issues and then shape and complete a project around the ones they are passionate about by the end of August.

For a place on the programme or to find out more about it, get in touch with the team now at [email protected].

Young people join together to transform their communities
