Leadership and Legacy in History
WELCOME & KEYNOTE
On behalf of Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies, I cordially welcome you all, students, judges, volunteers, and all the staff and thank you all for hard work for preparation and participation. It is a great honor and privilege that HAFS is hosting National History Day 2015 in that it is a memorable and rewarding “historical event” for HAFS, a decade-old, “historically brand-new” school.
I believe that as E. H. Carr said, “History is an unending dialogue between the past and the present.” This historical festival represents not only a splendid array of historical significance through a variety of media production but rather a great historical scene inspiring a constant dialogue between the past and the present. So I expect you to enhance the historical consciousness of the past and the present and shape an insightful vision for the future through your engagement in
this event.
Thank you all again for your passion, insight, and dedication to make the day such a great success! I wish all participants the best of luck!
Henry Em is an associate professor of Korean history in the Asian Studies Division of Underwood International College, Yonsei University. He grew up in Chicago, and after graduating from the University of Chicago spent a year in the Philippines doing human rights work, and then a year-and-half in Korea doing solidarity work related to human rights and the labor movement. He received his PhD in History from the University of Chicago in 1995. From 1995 through 2012, he was Assistant Professor at UCLA and University of Michigan, and Associate Professor at NYU. He was Fulbright Senior Scholar to Korea (1998-1999), and Visiting Professor at Centre de Recherches sur la Corée, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (2000). Professor Em began teaching at Yonsei University in 2013. His most recent publications include The Great Enterprise: Sovereignty and Historiography in Modern Korea (Duke University Press, 2013), and “Historians and History Writing in Modern Korea,” Oxford History of Historical Writing: Volume 5, edited by Axel Schneider and Daniel Woolf (Oxford University Press, 2011).
