INSPIRING STUDENTSSometimes the difference between success and failure for a student

is the hand-up provided by a scholarship. Your generous support to

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) students inspires—and

often allows—them to realize their educational hopes and dreams.

Since 1984, the generosity of donors has helped the NICC Foundation

award more than $4.5 million in student scholarships. The Foundation could not have accomplished this without your support!

The NICC Foundation hosts several events throughout the year that

generate financial support for scholarships, honor our most influential

alumni for their contributions and connect student recipients to their

scholarship donors. We are grateful for your continued participation.

Supporting students with financial need removes obstacles in

their path toward a college education. Your gifts inspire students

and their families and make a tremendous impact on the vitality of

our communities.

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) is known for putting students first.

That’s why the College froze tuition and fees for the 2013-2014 year. NICC is

continuing this commitment to affordability by making it a priority to freeze tuition again for 2014-2015 because access is the first step for northeast

Iowans who want to develop their skills and earn a competitive credential.

Did You Know?56% of jobs in the Iowa economy are middle-skill, requiring education and training beyond high school but not a four-year degree. Yet, only 33% of the workforce has the necessary skills and credentials to fill these jobs.Northeast Iowa Community College has new programs in place to meet this middle- skill need!

Norma Denlinger understands that the gift of a scholarship does not end at the award, but

continues as students pay it forward in their work, families and community involvement.

Norma Denlinger graduated from Clarke College (now Clarke University) in the 1940s

at a time when very few women had the financial resources to attend college or were

encouraged to earn a college degree. Her passionate advocacy for education led to the

creation of the Norma Denlinger Dubuque Racing Association Scholarship for Northeast Iowa Community College students. The annual award will provide five, $1,000 scholarships

for deserving students in perpetuity.

For Norma, creating new scholarships for NICC students is a two-way street; students

receive a scholarship, and she then encourages scholarship recipients to respond by serving

their local communities and giving back.

Scholarship Luncheon

Norma Denlinger and Dr. Wee

“It’s important to a healthy

community that people give

back to their community, and

education is very important

to me. I believe that giving is

better than receiving.”

- Norma Denlinger

“The scholarships I have received

helped me work toward my

goals and dreams. I have a much

brighter future. After I earn my

bachelor’s degrees in psychology

and accounting from Loras

College, I plan on transferring to

the University of Iowa where I will

attend law school and, hopefully,

begin my career as a lawyer –

which has been one of my dreams.”

- Felicia Fischer

The future is bright for Northeast Iowa Community College scholarship recipient Felicia Fischer!

While earning an associate of arts degree from Northeast Iowa

Community College, Felicia made the dean’s list four consecutive

semesters and then transferred to Loras College to continue

her education.

INVESTING IN PARTNERSHIPS

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and the Foundation are honored to serve an expansive eight-county district

through two campuses and six centers in northeast Iowa.

Completed in January 2013, the new Wilder Business Center at the Calmar campus meets the training, education and

conference needs of local businesses and communities. The state-of-the-art Center offers advanced manufacturing,

heathcare, career development and business and technology training programs, as well as meeting space and

videoconferencing capability for rural communities and businesses. The $1.7 million facility renovation was partially

funded by an Economic Development Administration Public Works grant.

ReEngage Dubuque is a new, successful collaboration between Dubuque

Community School District, Northeast Iowa Community College, and Dubuque’s

Project HOPE partners. The initiative reaches out to high school dropouts to re-

engage them into educational options for completing a high school diploma

or High School Equivalency Diploma (formerly GED) at NICC. The NICC Foundation

works to support these students to continue their education and training through

scholarship opportunities.

A new Success Model in partnership with the City of Oelwein was implemented

at the Regional Academy for Math and Science (RAMS) and Oelwein Center

this year. The success model supports students through career coaching, soft

skills workshops and certificate programming in advanced manufacturing,

healthcare and information technology. The success model is also being replicated

at all NICC centers.

118 high school dropouts were contacted; of those, 100 were successfully reengaged

the support from NICC helps double our reengagement efforts.”

After enduring a troubled youth in multiple foster care homes, Blake nearly dropped out of high school until the ReEngage Dubuque program

provided the one-on-one support and encouragement he needed to return to school and earn his diploma. Blake is now a member of the TRiO-Student Support Services program at the Peosta campus, is working toward an Associate of Arts degree, and has plans to enter medical school and study psychiatry at the University of Iowa. He is applying for scholarships to support his education at NICC.

At Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), we don’t just talk about partnerships; it is how we do business! We believe teamwork is a win-win for

individuals and communities, resulting in family sustaining jobs, a strong skilled

worker pipeline and a vibrant economy. The following partnerships

demonstrate the power of successful teamwork:

• Theaward-winningOpportunity Dubuque partnership addresses

labor shortages through certificate programs in advanced

manufacturing, computer numerical control (CNC) machining and

welding and currently boasts a 90% job placement rate. Partners

include DubuqueWorks, Greater Dubuque Development Corporation,

Project HOPE, Dubuque Community School District, IowaWORKS, East

Central Intergovernmental Agency and more than 18 business partners.

This model is now being replicated at all NICC centers. One successful

certification story is Titus Fair, who found work at A.Y. McDonald as a

CNC machinist and received a promotion last summer to quality

control manager.

• Bypartneringwithall15Iowacommunitycollegesinthestatewide

Iowa-Advanced Manufacturing (I-AM) grant funded by the

Department of Labor, NICC is increasing its training capacity

and expanding career pathways in industrial maintenance, CNC

and welding programs for new and incumbent workers.

• ThroughitsnewCEO Executive Exchange, Manufacturing Alliance and Human Resources Alliance programs, NICC is bringing business

and education partners to the table to share best practices and discuss

workforce solutions for recruitment, retention, training and cost-saving

business practices.

• ClarkeUniversity,LorasCollegeandSouthwestWisconsinTechnical

College teamed up in 2012 with Northeast Iowa Community College’s

federally-funded Skill Up program to develop information technology

training to meet the new and future workforce needs of more than 17

regional business partners. Through fiscal year 2013, more than 800 IT

credentials have been awarded to area employees.

Partnerships are nothing new for the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation, and an exciting new collaboration with

Northeast Iowa Community College, Fitzgerald Inc. of Elkader and the internationally known robotics company Lely

will result in an advanced robotic milking system at Iowa’s Dairy Center.

This investment serves as both an icon of new technology and an educational resource for NICC agriculture program

students, local high school FFA students and teachers, dairy producers and consumers.
