What if I already submitted the FAFSA?Follow up with the Financial Aid Office to ensure your file

is complete or if additional information is needed.

What if financial aid is not in place or if no payment is made?Failure to make tuition and fees payment arrangements

or not having your financial aid file complete will result

in cancellation from all your courses one week prior to

the semester starting. Avoid cancellation by finalizing all

payment arrangements as soon as possible. Check your

Account Summary often. > Student Records > Tuition

and Fees > Account Summary

What if I can’t pay for it all at once?A payment plan option is available. > Student Records

> Tuition and Fees > Tuition Payment Plan. You may

arrange for monthly automatic payments via:

• Checking account• Savings account • Credit card

The payment plan covers tuition and course fees with a semester balance of $200 or more; textbooks are excluded. A non-refundable $25 fee per semester does apply.

When is tuition due? Tuition is due two weeks prior to the start of the semester.

Students registering after the due date must immediately

pay tuition and fees. If your enrollment plans change, cancel

your registration to avoid incurring tuition and fees charges.

Non-attendance does not void your account balance.

How do I pay my tuition? There are convenient payment options available. If you are

not using financial aid, see payment instructions below.

Tuition Payment Account information is available online > Student Records

> Tuition and Fees > Account Summary. Email notice of

your tuition and fee statement and due date is sent to your

What do I need to complete the FAFSA?All students will need the information listed below. If you

are a dependant student, you will be required to submit

your parents information as well.

• Your Social Security Number

• Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

• Your most recent federal income tax returns, W-2s and

other records of money earned (Note: You may be able to

transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using

the IRS Data Retrieval Tool)

• Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)

• Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

• A Federal Student Aid PIN to sign electronically.

If you do not already have one, visit www.pin.ed.gov

to obtain one

How do I provide tax information? If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, we

highly recommend using the tool for several reasons:

• It’s the easiest way to provide your tax data.

• It’s the best way of ensuring that your FAFSA has

accurate tax information.

If you are ineligible or otherwise choose not to use the

IRS Data Retrieval Tool to retrieve tax information, NICC

may require a copy of your IRS Tax Return Transcript (or

your parents’ IRS Tax Return Transcript if you are a dependent student).

What is verification and what if I am selected?Watch your mail for notice that your FAFSA has been

received by NICC. This communication will indicate if

you have been selected for verification and if additional

information is needed to complete the application process.

If you are selected for verification (process by which

certain required data on the FAFSA is reviewed for accuracy and

completeness), submit the requested information to

the Financial Aid Office in a timely manner to avoid

processing delays.

Access the missing information and appropriate

forms at > Student Records > Financial Aid >

What is an Award Letter and what do I do with it?Notice will be sent to your NICC email when your Award

Letter is available. This letter spells out the details of your

financial aid package. Find your Award Letter at

> Student Records > Financial Aid > Award Letter.

Your financial aid amounts are based on full-time enrollment

levels for the fall and spring semesters. See enrollment

summary on page 6.

• Grants: no additional steps are needed on your part.

Make sure that it is enough to cover your tuition and

fees. Your account will automatically be credited and any

remainder will be refunded through your Higher One

refund selection.

• Work Study: review opportunities at > Student

Records > Financial Aid > Workstudy Information

• Student Loan: review your budget and determine how

much of the loan you will need. If you wish to borrow,

you will have additional steps to complete. Remember a

loan needs to be paid back with interest.

- Accept your loans at > Student Records > Financial

Aid > Accept My Loans.

- If you are a first time borrower, complete the Master

Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling at

www.studentloans.gov

- More information is available at www.nicc.edu/loans

What types of circumstances may affect my financial aid?

• Class attendance

• Late start courses

• Dropping a course

• Enrollment status

• Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?To remain eligible for financial aid, you must maintain

the three federal guidelines that the College monitors

each semester:

• Maintain a 2.0 cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).

• Complete 67% of your cumulative attempted credits.

• Complete your program of study within 150% time

frame of your total program length.

What happens if I don’t meet SAP? Students who do not meet any one of these SAP

measurements at the end of the semester will be placed

on “Financial Aid Warning Status.” Students who do not

meet any one of the SAP measurements at the end of

a consecutive semester will be placed on “Financial Aid

Suspension Status” and no longer eligible to receive any

financial aid. Note: A student who has only letter grades

of ‘F’ and/or ‘W’ at the end of any term will automatically

be placed on suspension.

If you are placed on Financial Aid Suspension, you have

the right to an appeal; however, it does not guarantee

reinstatement of financial aid. www.nicc.edu/appeal

Federal regulations require NICC to comply with Return

of Title IV policies. If you stop attending classes, withdraw

from all classes, fail all classes or any combination of those

situations, you may be required to return part or all of

your financial aid (even if it was grant money). Always consult

with the Financial Aid Office to determine if your financial

aid will be affected now and/or in the future.

Bookstore

Apparel

How do I purchase my books?• At the Bookstore. Bring a copy of your course schedule and your

student ID.

• Online with Credit Card. > Student Records > Buy/Sell Books Online > Select your campus

• Rent from the Bookstore. Save by renting new or used copies of select

titles rather than buying them (not all books are available to rent). Pay the

lower fee, use the book, and return it in good condition to the Bookstore

at the end of the semester. Only NICC students can enter into a rental

agreement, so be sure to bring your student ID.

Book Costs: Financial aid that exceeds tuition charges can be used for purchases

at NICC Bookstores. At the Calmar campus, you can get a Bookstore voucher

from the Financial Aid Office. At the Peosta campus, Bookstore staff will calculate

the financial aid available for your purchases.

How do I know which books I need for class? Book Lists: Book and supply requirements, including ISBNs and prices can be

found online > Student Records > Buy/Sell Books Online > Select your

campus. Use your course schedule to find the books required for your class.

Class is over...what do I do with my books? • Return Them. Textbook rentals must be returned to the Bookstore by the

last day of each semester.

• Keep them. You never know when you might need the textbook for

future reference.

• Sell them. Sell or buy your books online > Student Records

> Buy/Sell Books Online > Select your campus or > College Life >

NICC Marketplace. Book buy-backs are also scheduled at the end of each

semester. An outside agency will give you cash on the spot for your used

textbooks – keep an eye out for upcoming dates!

Can I purchase Microsoft Office? Software is available for purchase in the campus Bookstore. Students are

eligible to purchase Microsoft Office 365 University which has all the normal

applications.

CounselingBeing a college student can be exciting, challenging and even stressful at times. Many different resources, including

counseling, are available to support students. www.nicc.edu/counseling

Who do I talk to about personal issues?NICC offers free counseling services to all students. Counselors can

help you determine the seriousness of your problem, assist with coping

strategies and, when needed, help you locate community mental health

resources. Always seek counseling or other personal support at the

first indication of a problem. Sometimes students drop out of college

or withdraw from courses due to personal problems that could have

been resolved with a little assistance. Remember, we are all here to help

you succeed on your academic journey. Contact information for the

Counseling staff can be found on page 19.

How to balance school, family, work, etc.?It is easy to get overwhelmed as you begin your college career. It’s

important to set attainable goals, set a schedule and involve the people

closest to you in your college experience. Remember that you will need to

study 2-3 hours for each hour you are in class, so a 40-hour work week may

not work if you are also going to school full-time.

Want interactive tips on student health and wellness issues?Check out the StudentHealth101 monthly e-magazine. Watch your Xpress email for details.

www.nicc.edu/housing or in the Admissions Office.

What’s available for food on campus?Dining services are provided on both campuses for the convenience

of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are

offered and meal purchases can be made via cash, check or credit

card. Gift certificates are available too.

Summer: Mon.-Fri. 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

How does parking work? The Peosta Campus provides parking in all lots without a fee or

for free in the Bookstore and display a parking permit. A designated

student lot and on-road parking provide plenty of spaces for you

to park.

Do you offer Ride Share? NICC has Market Place on Xpress. Use this forum to post if you are

looking for or are willing to provide a ride to or from campus.

> College Life > NICC Marketplace

Page 19: NICC iNdex 2014-2015

Is there wireless access and are mobile devices allowed? The campus is wireless, and you are more than welcome to use any mobile device while on campus. Access to the wireless

network requires a valid email address. We have computer labs spread around campus for your use. Feel free to utilize these

labs often – they are there for you! We also have free printing for students, but make sure you’re being conscious of how

much paper you’re printing…save a tree when you can!

Is there extra software I need for my online class? Online coursework requires you to have Internet and word processing software (preferably Microsoft Word). Visit this link for

specific information on computers and software that will better help you succeed. www.nicc.edu/distancelearning.

How do I get a job on campus? NICC offers job opportunities through the Federal Work-Study Program and the NICC Student Employment Program.

Positions provide part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education

expenses. Opportunities are available on and off campus, pay minimum wage and allow up to 20 hours per week. Visit with

the Financial Aid Office to see if you are eligible. View current positions on Xpress - > Student Records > Financial Aid >

Workstudy Information

How do I get a transcript?Unofficial transcripts can be found on > Student Records > Academic Record > Unofficial Transcript.

Request an official transcript at www.nicc.edu/transcript.

How do I get my grades?Final grades are posted at the end of each semester on >Student Records>Academic Record>My Final Course Grades.

Grades are only available electronically.

Who has access to my academic record? No one unless you give written consent. As a college student, your academic records are protected by a federal law

called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law prohibits the College from disclosing non-directory

information to someone other than you. If you would like to grant the College authority to share your academic or financial

records with another individual, such as a parent or guardian, you must complete a Request to Release Information form

in the Registrar’s Office. Students may refuse disclosure of directory information by filling out the appropriate form in the

Registrar’s Office within ten calendar days of the beginning of the semester in which you are enrolled. The entire FERPA

policy can be reviewed at www.nicc.edu/catalog.

How am I informed of weather delays and cancellations?Sign up for Text Alerts > MyNICC > MyCruiserAlert. If inclement weather would make driving hazardous, students are

asked to access Xpress announcements, call campus for a recorded message or tune into local radio or television stations.

Hmm...Still wondering?

18

Can I improve my placement scores?Consider retesting to improve your score! It will save you time and money if you test into a higher course level. Make sure

before you retest to take advantage of the opportunities in the Learning Center: study packets, review websites and test

tutoring. Keep in mind, you will have to wait at least two weeks from the date of the original test before re-testing. To

determine if re-testing is beneficial, contact your advisor. To schedule a re-test, contact the Testing Center.

I completed a course at another college or university, what do I need to do?To receive transfer credit, request an official copy of your transcript from the college you previously attended be sent

to the NICC Admissions Office. The Registrar will evaluate the transcript and determine which credits will satisfy NICC

degree requirements.

I want to transfer. Who can help me? Your advisor is equipped with the resources to help you with your transfer process. Explore transfer equivalencies and other

helpful transfer information at www.nicc.edu/transfer and www.transferiniowa.org. Be sure to meet with admissions

reps when they set up booths on campus.

Do you offer student health insurance?Students are encouraged to enroll in a student health insurance program to assure protection in the event of illness or

injury if they are not covered under a current plan. Health insurance resources from a variety of companies providing no or

low-cost individual or family coverage are available in the Student Services Office.

Are there any programs that require a background check or current physical? Some programs may require any or all of the following: background check, physical and immunizations, special training

or drug testing. If you have questions on whether your program has additional requirements contact the Director of

Program Compliance.

What is TRiO-SSS and how do I know if I qualify? TRiO-Student Support Services is a federally funded grant program that provides ongoing support for students at NICC

who are looking to transfer to a four-year college or university. In order to qualify, you must be a first-generation college

student, and/or low-income, and/or have a disability and complete an application and interview. This program is only

offered at the Peosta campus and is located in the Main Building, Room 142.

How do I get started with a research project?Visit the library! The library staff is available to help you identify, locate and use the resources of information located both

inside and outside the library. Because many of our library resources are electronic, you can access them 24/7 wherever

you have a connection to the Internet. If you are off campus and would like to access our databases for research

materials, you can access them at www.nicc.edu/library. It is important to have your 14-digit student ID number to

access these databases.

How do I access NICC resources and classes close to home? Visit one of our convenient center locations to take advantage of computer access, admission testing, credit and non-credit

courses, intake advising, course registration and much more! www.nicc.edu/centers
