    Objective

    1. To do a comprehensive study of availablelaundering techniques.

    2. To compare various laundering techniques and tofind the best available technique (economically, ecologically, ease of application.

    3. To enlist various improvements and techniquesdeveloped , hence aiding further development inlaundering techyniques.

    Physical Action

Inseparable part of almost all laundering techniquespracticed till date.

Enhances mass transfer by:1. Exposing fabric to continuously changing liquor

    surrounding.

    2. Loosening of soil-fibre bond.

    Physical Action

It is can be imparted :

    1. Manually

    2. By machines

Forces that are applied : Rubbing, beating etc.

    Physical Action

Machines can be classified broadly into two parts:

    1. Top Loading Machine

    Agitator type Pulsator type

    2. Front Loading Machine

    Top

    load 1] MLR1:25

    2] Enables working withcomfortable posture.

3] Consumes higherenergy and detergent .

4] Is predominantly usedin Indian subcontinent and

    America.

    5] Lesser physicalagitation

    Front

    load 1] MLR 1:5

    2] working posture isuncomfortable.

    3] consumes 60% lesserenergy*.

    4] Dominates in theEuropean continent.

    5] Higher physicalagitation

    Laundry process intensification by

    ultrasound

    1. Ultra Sound accelerate mass transport.

    2. Cleaning action by bursting bubble.

    3. Higher energy efficiency and lesser processingtime.

    4. Requires lesser amount of detergent.

    5. Eg. Laundry Pure, UltraSonic.

    Laundry Pure

    1. Requires nodetergents.

    2. Ionizes watermolecules into H+and OH- .

    3. OH- provides thedetergency action, and H+ acts asdisinfectant.

    4. Can be attached toany normal machine.

    Eco Dual Washing Machine

    1. Two washcompartments.

    2. Storage tank forstoring waste water.

    3. Saves upto 50 %water.

    Swirl

    1. Manual washingbasket.

    2. Can be used inplaces where

    electricity and watersupply are notregular.

    3. Is very cost effective

    as source ofagitation is manual.

    Exercycle

    1. Laundry tub isattached to cycle.

    2. Can be extensivelyused in areas wherethere is irregularelectric supply.

    3. Serves both aswashing machineand exercisinginstrument.

    Maglev Washing Machine

    1. Uses magnet forrotation of drums.

    2. Produces almost nosound, silent

    cleaning.

    3. Since no friction it isvery energy efficient.

    4. Very good option forcompact urbanhouses.

    Intestine

    1. Quickest method oflaundering.

    2. Requires nodetergent, hence isenvironment

    friendly.

    3. Clothes come dry .

    4. Though just aprototype, gives wayfor further researchand development infast and cleanlaundering.

    Tilted Drum Washing Machine

    1. Washing drum istilted at an angle of

    150.

    2. Uses lesser water ascompared to normalfront loading

    machines.

    3. Enchances comfort ,helps maintain goodposture.

    4. Allows dumping ofclothes in betweenthe laundry cycle.

    Wash-Up

    1. Wash-up is aconcept, not a newmachine.

    2. Front load machineis to be mounted onflush tank.

    3. Waste water, is usedfor flushing, insteadof draining itdirectly.

    4. Feasible,economical, saves lotof water.

    5. Surfactant solutionenables bettercleaning ofcommode.

    Polymer or waterless cleaning

    1. Uses nylon beads as solvent, instead of water.

    2. Detergent is dissolved in a cup of water, it serves thesame purpose as in normal laundering.

    3. Nylon has inherent property to attract dirt, which getsabsorbed in beads.

    4. Beads provide improved mechanical action, by rubbing.

    5. Uses 90% less water as compared to conventional

machines.6. Same beads can be used for at least 100 wash cycles.

    7. Drying of washed clothes is much faster.

    Wash Ball

    1. This is a novel method of detergent less cleaning.

    2. Principle: special natural ceramic when rubbedagainst each other in water, changes the pH of

water.3. Hollow plastic ball, with porous body specially

designed to give good cleaning action.

    4. It cannot completely replace detergent, as it makers

claim, but can reduce its consumption to a verygreat extent.
