Holyday of Obligation Mass Schedule

Thursday, August 15 7:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m.

There will be a special “Back to School” Blessing

at the 7:00 p.m. Mass

A Blessed Feast of St. Clare of Assisi to You!

This weekend at St. Clare we each make a commitment of our time through our annual Stewardship of Time and Talent Pledge.

All parishioners are asked to share of your time to bless our parish, God’s Kingdom, and help others. At the Offertory at Mass we will bring forward our commitment cards to the Altar as a sign of a spir-itual thanksgiving to God for the time that He gives to us…and we share for others. Setting aside part of our time each week for prais-ing God at Mass and daily prayer and serving in parish ministries is how we keep our Christian vocation a priority considering our other commitments.

Our Stewardship Team and I want to thank all of you who already volunteer in one or several ministries and renew those commitments today.

Back to School Mass… At the Feast of the Assumption 7:00 PM Mass, we ask all students (K-12) to bring their school backpacks for a special blessing at the end of Mass. What a great connection of honoring our Blessed Mother Mary for her faithful discipleship and asking God to help our students grow in holiness and knowledge in their new school year. From Kindergartners to Seniors in High School, all students are encouraged to come to Thursday’s evening Mass for this bless-ing and to ask your fellow parishioners to pray with and for you in your new year. (We will also have our regular 7 AM Mass that day as well.)

St. Clare of Assisi, pray for us! Fr. Jim Deiters

The Feast of our parish patron, St. Clare of Assisi

St. Clare was born in Assisi in 1194, as Chiara Offreduccio, the beautiful eldest daughter of a wealthy nobleman and a devout mother. As a young girl, Clare dedicated herself to prayer. At 18 years old, she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach during a Lenten ser-vice in the church of San Giorgio and asked him to help her live according to the Gospel. Both Francis’ words and his gospel way of life spoke to Clare in the depths of her heart. This is what she wanted to do with her life—to join the followers of Francis. On Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare left her home accom-panied by her cousin and collaborator, Bona. She was received by Francis at the small chapel of Our Lady of the Angels. Clare’s long hair was cut and she was given a plain robe and veil in exchange for her rich gown. In this symbolic gesture the seed was planted for the beginning of a new Order in the histo-ry of the Church, one different from any other of that period. Clare joined the convent of the Benedictine nuns near Bastia under Francis’ orders. When her father found her and attempt-ed to force her back home to marry the son of another noble, she refused and professed that she would have no other hus-band than Jesus Christ. In order to give her the greater solitude she desired, Francis sent Clare to San Angelo, another Benedic-tine monastery. Clare’s sister Catarina, who took the name Ag-nes, remained with her there until a separate dwelling was built for them next to the church of San Damiano. Over time, other women joined them, living simple lives of austerity, seclusion from the world and poverty, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order. St. Clare and her sisters wore no shoes, ate no meat, lived in a poor house and kept silent most of the time. Their lives consisted of manual labor and prayer, yet they were very happy knowing Our Lord was close to them all the time! Following Francis’ death, Clare continued to promote her order of “radical commitment to corporate poverty”. In 1224, an ar-my came to attack Assisi. Although very sick, Clare went out to meet them with the Blessed Sacrament in her hands. On her knees she begged God to save her Sisters. The attackers fled Assisi with no harm to anyone. Today, after 800 years, there are Poor Clare monasteries in some 67 countries in the world where women are living the gospel way of life Clare embraced. We are blessed to have the Poor Clare Sisters in a Monastery in our Belleville diocese.

These holy women continue to be a guide for us today!
