It is Homecoming at NMU. It was Wayne State’s Homecoming when the two teams met in 2010. NMU leads the all-time series 12-10 and 7-4 in Marquette. The series began in 1957. Wayne State is 4-0 and 3-0 in the GLIAC. LAST WEEK NMU was defeated for the first time this season at Ashland last Saturday. The ‘Cats opened the game scoring the first 13 points. Ashland held NMU to only three points after the first quarter while putting up 45 of its own. NMU had 17 first downs, was 7-for-18 on third down conversions and 2-for-3 in the redzone. The ‘Cats had 289 yards of offense (168 rushing and 121 passing). Carter Kopach was 19-of-37 for 121 yards through the air with a touchdown and two interceptions. Kopach was sacked three times and rushed for 59 yards and a TD. Prince Young led the ground attack with 85 yard. Matt Forward, Robert Edmonds, Tony Propson and Anthony Echols led the defensive group with six total tackles each. LAST MEETING The Wayne State handed NMU its first conference lost when the two teams met in 2010 in Detroit, Mich. The ‘Cats were down 10-0 before battling back and taking the lead at 15-10. The Warriors ended the game, scoring 16 points in the second half to take the win, 26-18. For the afternoon the ‘Cats recorded 313 yards of total offense while the Warriors had 321. On the ground NMU tallied 95 yards and in the air 218. WSU registered 141 yards rushing and 180 passing. The Warriors had 18 first downs to 15 for the ‘Cats. John Privitelli led the ‘Cats on the ground with 56 yards on 15 carries. Kopach was 15-32-4 for 218 yards. Dustin Brancheau had five catches for 111 yards. COACH ANDERSON Head coach Bernie Anderson is in his sixth season at NMU. Anderson is 24-31 at NMU and 117-127 in his 24 years as a head coach. This is the best start to a season at NMU for Anderson. Anderson is 1-2 against Wayne State. He is 2-3 in the fifth game of the season. OFFENSE NMU is averaging 368.5 yards of total offense and 5.4 yards per play. The ‘Cats average 175.5 yards on the ground and 193.0 yards through the air. The ‘Cats are averaging 28.8 points and are 43 percent on third down conversion. THIS WEEK’S GAMEThe NMU football team hosts No. 7 Wayne State on Saturday (Oct. 1) in the Superior Dome. It is Homecoming at NMU. It was Wayne State’s Homecoming when the two teams met in 2010. NMU leads the all-time series 12-10 and 7-4 in Marquette. The series began in 1957. Wayne State is 4-0 and 3-0 in the GLIAC.

LAST WEEKNMU was defeated for the first time this season at Ashland last Saturday. The ‘Cats opened the game scoring the first 13 points. Ashland held NMU to only three points after the first quarter while putting up 45 of its own. NMU had 17 first downs, was 7-for-18 on third down conversions and 2-for-3 in the redzone. The ‘Cats had 289 yards of offense (168 rushing and 121 passing). Carter Kopach was 19-of-37 for 121 yards through the air with a touchdown and two interceptions. Kopach was sacked three times and rushed for 59 yards and a TD. Prince Young led the ground attack with 85 yard. Matt Forward, Robert Edmonds, Tony Propson and Anthony Echols led the defensive group with six total tackles each.

LAST MEETINGThe Wayne State handed NMU its first conference lost when the two teams met in 2010 in Detroit, Mich. The ‘Cats were down 10-0 before battling back and taking the lead at 15-10. The Warriors ended the game, scoring 16 points in the second half to take the win, 26-18. For the afternoon the ‘Cats recorded 313 yards of total offense while the Warriors had 321. On the ground NMU tallied 95 yards and in the air 218. WSU registered 141 yards rushing and 180 passing. The Warriors had 18 first downs to 15 for the ‘Cats. John Privitelli led the ‘Cats on the ground with 56 yards on 15 carries. Kopach was 15-32-4 for 218 yards. Dustin Brancheau had five catches for 111 yards.

QUARTERBACKCarter Kopach is 65-for-112 through the air for 772 yards. He has four interceptions and seven touchdowns. He has rushed 65 times for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He is third in the GLIAC in total offense averaging 265 yards per game.

RUNNING BACKSPrince Young leads the team with 294 yards (73.5 per game) on the ground. John Privitelli is second with 87 yards in three games.

RECEIVERS MAKING LONG CATCHESJulian Gaines is averaging 19.6 yards per catch. Christian Jessie is averaging 14.6 yards and leads the team with 18 receptions and three touchdowns. Jared Buss (16.2), Kyle Senn (16.8) and Gerrit Mortensen (17.0) have large averages.

DEFENSEAnthony Marietti and Jacob Lehman each have two interceptions. Zach Anderson leads the ‘Cats with 30 total tackles and three sacks. Josh Droese has 27 while Matt Forward has 23 and Robert Edmonds has 20.

SPECIAL TEAMSRockne Belmonte is 6-for-7 on field goals and 13-for-14 in extra points. He is tied for third in the GLIAC for kickers scoring. Garett Peck is fourth in the conferece with a punting average of 40.7 yards on 13 punts.

1981 REUNIONNMU is honoring the 1981 team this week. The Wildcats had an undefeated regular season (10-0) in 1981. They defeated Elizabeth City (55-6) in the NCAA Quarterfinal before bowing out to Southwest Texas in the semifinal.
