Father allegedly slits throats of his four children

LIMPOPO – A hit of Nyaope, a drug made up of low-grade heroin, marijuana, cleaning detergents and Rattex (rat poison), sells for R35 a hit in the streets of Mah-welereng and Marapong. The highly-addictive street drug is sold in loops, bags, hits, straws and foils.

The risk of overdosing from injecting is high as the user does not know what mix he is actually injecting into his body (10-50% heroin is used depending on the dealer). Another popular way of using this drug in South Africa is smoking, traditionally called “Chasing the dragon”. The drug is put on a foil and heated - the smoke is then inhaled with a straw.

According to a 2013 study by the Department of Social Development – Substance use, misuse and abuse amongst the youth in Limpopo the average age of drug users has decreased dramatically. Some of the users who participated in the study were as young as nine (9). These findings were confirmed when North-ern News spoke to addicts in the Mokopane area.

A volunteer who works to get addicts off the streets, told Northern News: “I was shocked when I realised that drug deal-ers are targeting young children.”

Socioeconomic challenges such as unemployment, poverty, peer pressure and crime in general contribute to the rise in substance abuse. “These issues are a daily reality in towns like Mokopane and Lephalale,” the volunteer says. “Having nothing to do, Nyaope ‘hot spots’ are formed where addicts gather to smoke and inject the drug.”

Nyaope is the drug of choice in especially Mahwelereng, Madiba, Moshate and Sekgakgapeng.

Northern News approached a 17-year-old addict who says he started using marijuana at the age of 12 and was introduced to nyaope by friends at the age of 14. He is injecting and smok-ing the drug and while he admits to using regularly, he says he wants to break free from the addiction. “I was expelled from school because I started stealing from learners and teachers to pay for drugs,” he says, adding that his family does not trust him anymore because he stole from home as well.

He understands why they don’t trust him and that his actions are wrong, but say that the need to fuel his addiction was stron-ger than the guilt he felt for breaking their trust. He craves the feeling nyaope gives him.

The police in Mahwelereng confirms that the issue of nyaope is worrying and on the rise in the area. They say that drug deal-ers target anyone – business people, school children and even the unemployed. “This drug is adversely affecting our commu-nity,” says Mahwelereng police spokesperson Constable Sello Leso. “School children are using pocket money to buy nyaope.”

He urges anyone with any information on drug use to report it to the nearest police station. “Keep an eye on your children and get help as soon as possible.”

ZEBEDIELA - A 36-year-old father from Moletane Vil-lage in Zebediela is expected to appear in court on four counts of murder after allegedly slitting his four sons’ throats last Saturday.

It is believed that the man and his children’s mother were having marital problems, said warrant officer Mochane Kanyane from the Magatle police station.

The four brothers’ bodies, aged four, six, ten and 13 were found by neighbors of their mother.

After collecting his sons on Friday from their grand-mother’s house in Gauteng where they were cared for, their father took them to their mother’s house in Mo-

letane Village the next day where he allegedly killed them.

According to media reports, the mother told police she was on the phone with one of her sons while the father gruesomely murdered them one by one. She heard their cries.

After allegedly killing his children, the man’s failed suicide attempt with the same bloodied knife he com-mitted the four murders with, landed him in a provin-cial hospital in Polokwane where he will remain until he recovers.

Police says that he will be taken into custody and appear in court as soon as he is discharged from the hospital.

MARAPONG – Violence erupted in Marapong on Monday night as an angry mob set fire to 22 busses from Lowveld Bus Services, the satellite police station, a municipal office and the library. Various privately owned businesses were also dam-aged. The damage is estimated at millions of rands.

“We have not assessed the monetary losses on our busses yet, but can safely say that it will be millions,” says Frans Rossel of Lowveld Bus Service. “None of our staff or passengers were hurt, but we lost 19 bus-ses and an additional three busses were very badly damaged.”

While the violent protest seems to be about service delivery and unemployment, no confirmation as to what sparked the violent behaviour has been received yet. According to some residents they are unhappy about unemployment, service delivery and the fact that local people can’t obtain jobs at Medupi. “We have been made promises that we will be employed but up until now we are still sitting at home without jobs,” a resident told Northern News.

By Wednesday evening the radio station SAFM reported that 14 people were arrest-ded earlier the day making good Limpopo po-lice spokesperson, Lt Col Maselela Ledwaba's promise that police will do everything in its power to bring the arsonists to book.

Tuesday afternoon the burned busses had not been removed yet and a heavy police presence could be seen in the area. Most of the residents in Marapong who spoke to Northern News agreed that the incident was unnecessarily violent and that protestors should have vented their frustrations in the correct manner.

“We are all struggling to make ends meet but there was no reason to damage busses and endanger our lives,” says Margret Ndou, who lives in extension 1 in Marapong.

Klaas Mathebula agrees, “I am selling vegetables on the street, because I can’t find a job, but I don’t think what these people did was right.”

Meanwhile, some sources are claiming that the protest started because the mayor, Jack Maeko, refused to grant residents

Violence erupts in Marapong

permission to participate in a legal protest march against unemployment and service delivery.

The municipality responded that the Mayor is not allowed to grant permission for a march and that all applications are handled by the municipality. It also stated that it regrets the incidents of violence that took place.

According to the municipality, Maeko has always championed the cause of the local labour force and met with stakeholders on several occasions to discuss the qualms of local residents pertaining to job losses and the employment of local workers. It stated that it is important to note that Lephalale has an unemployment rate of 22.9%, which is below the provincial average.

The municipality urges the community to stay calm and to refrain from violence.

The South African Local Government As-sociation (SALGA) condemned the violent protest in Limpopo that resulted in the de-struction of property and infrastructure.

MOGALAKWENA– Violent protests has entered its second week at Anglo’s Mogal-akwena Platinum Mine. Communities in the area are demanding jobs from the mining company and have since last week caused havoc on the N11 North West of Mokopane (“Fires blaze as mob protests”, 4 Septem-ber).

This negatively affected the latter mine’s production in a huge way as employees and contractors were unable to access their work places for a few days. The protestors also disturbed traffic and caused major damage to various properties.

A truck transporting potatoes was set ablaze on the N11 on Thursday after it was hit by a petrol bomb as it was driving past the protesting crowd. The driver escaped.

Police allegedly used rubber bullets to manage protesting crowds and arrested a number of protestors for public violence. The arrested suspects appeared in Mokerong Magistrate Court on Monday. A number of

Situation remains tense in Mapelaprotesters were released on bail, while other only received a warning.

Thintha Mokhonoana, a spokesperson for the Mahwelereng Residents Association (MRA) reported on Monday that the road to Mapela via Mosesetjane is being closed off by protesters from Mapela. A terrified supermar-ket owner in Mapela phoned Northern News on Tuesday begging for help as he claimed protestors were breaking down his shop.

Despite the disruptions, employees and contractors reported for duty this week after mine manager; Richard Cox urged them to do so in a meeting last week Thursday. Employ-ees were also told, “No work, no pay”.

Residents are also angry at the mine for wanting to relocate a high school to a new facility, 16 kilometers away from its current location. The mine undertook to provide transport to the new facility but communities say they will not be able to afford it.

Protests are still continuing and police are present to manage revolting members.

The mine says they are negotiating with communities to resolve the matter.

Although we have only just recently ‘of-ficially’ welcomed Spring to South Africa and are starting to enjoy the budding and blooming trees, sweet scents, chirping birds and thunder showers, for most of the bass in our area ‘Spring Fever’ has passed.

Yes, you may still find a couple of bass staging in pre-spawn or even sitting on the nests, but most of them have already moved on to their post-spawn staging areas.

To my experience in the Limpopo where it starts warming up earlier than our more southern regions, when most of us start thinking SPAWNING BASS, the bass have already spawned and moved on. June, July and early August is usually the time for this, so if you find yourself struggling and wonder-ing where all the spawning bass are right now, wonder no more...it is time to get into post-spawn mode.

Post-spawn is a notoriously tough fish-ing period for pro and novice alike. Bass are inactive, trying to recover their strength

Fishing with Christie

Post-spawn bluesafter the stress and exertion of the spawning season. They have moved out of the shallows and scattered back into their staging areas and will take a couple of weeks to fully re-cover their pre-spawn vigour.

Post-spawn staging areas are often the same ones used during pre-spawn and are never far from the spawning location. It is not necessary to travel all the way across the lake looking for post-spawn bass. Cruise just off the shallows and keep a lookout for any changes in structure or cover. Typical post-spawn staging structure/cover will include the first depth change (drop-off), drop-off to timber or rock, transition in bottom composi-tion (gravel to rock, rock to shale, etc.) or vegetation (bulrushes to lily pads, lily pads to submerged weeds, etc.). One of the best places to look for post-spawn bass is off sec-ondary points adjacent to the spawning flats.

When bass are inactive during post-spawn it is difficult to coax them to bite because they are too tired and worn out to eat and will not actively chase down a lure. I have often heard frustrated anglers telling me all about the five to ten bass they could see

hanging around the limbs of a submerged tree/rock pile/weed bed, and presenting all sorts of different lures, even bumping the bass with the bait but to no avail. There was just no way to get the bass to bite!

My advice for this dilemma: First of all, when you see a bass...back off! If you can see him, he can see you. Note the exact spot and come back a little later but stay far enough away for the bass not to see you. Approach stealthily!

Now is the time to use a reaction bait. What is a reaction bait you may ask? As defined by Bassmaster.com... “Reaction baits — lures fished in a way that causes a bass to strike out of reflex or surprise; spin-nerbaits, crankbaits and lipless crankbaits are frequently fished in a manner designed to generate reaction bites”. In other words, the bass will strike your lure instinctively as a reaction to the movement close by, not be-cause it is hungry.

Do not cast the bait right on top of the bass. You will spook it! Cast beyond the tar-get, but make sure the retrieve will bring the lure right over the bass’s head or through the cover closest to the fish. If there is timber, rock or weed...fish through it, over it, in it. Bump it! Change the speed of your retrieve as you pass over the fish. These are all little ‘triggers’ that may force the bass into react-ing to your lure and strike with aggression.
