Arrested for vehicle theft GROBLERSBRUG – Three men tried to en-ter Botswana on Friday with a vehicle that was allegedly stolen.

The suspects arrived at the border post with three luxury vehicless just before clos-ing time. They handed over their passports and vehicle documentation to the clearance offers in their aim to enter Botswana.

"We noticed that the documentation was not in order and ordered further investigation into the matter,” says warrant officer Hennie van Staden of the Groblersbrug Port of Entry police.

On Saturday, it was confirmed that the documentation was fraudulent and the men were arrested for motor vehicle theft, fraud and possession of fraudulent documentation.

The suspects appeared in the Mokopane magistrate court on Monday and their case was postponed to 30 July.

Action plan for municipality LEPHALALE – During a National Council of Provinces (NCoP) meeting last Thursday, held at the Lephalale municipality, various municipal action plans for the previous quar-ter were discussed.

The district executive mayor, Rosina Mogotlane, said that some towns in Water-berg district are faced with high population densities, ageing infrastructure and high population growth.

“Our towns should be resilient to these developments and challenges in infrastructure provision,” Mogotlane says, adding that Lephalale has an aged water infrastructure with water stoppages at Marapong.

“We are in the process of replacing the current asbestos pipes that are still being used,” Mogotlane says.

“In addition to this the sewer network has reached it capacity and we are currently re-engineering this network.”

In Lephalale, about 13 652 urban house-holds and 6 759 rural households have ac-cess to refuse removal.

“The landfill site is owned by Exxaro and we are in the process of transferring the ownership to the Lephalale municipality,” Mogotlane confirmed.

LEPHALALE – A 29-year-old Nigerian man was arrested last Friday for selling coun-terfeit body lotion. Warrant officer Frans Mokoena of the Lephalale police says the man was arrested by members of the K9-unit while he was selling the goods.

Lephalale police spokesperson, warrant officer Frans Mokoena, says the man is said to be unhappy because his brother refused to give him the title deed to their home.

The man was charged and appeared in the Lephalale magis-trate court on Wednesday.

LEPHALALE – The temporary bridge be-tween Vaalwater and Lephalale is not going to be fixed soon. This is according to Mayor Jack Maeko speaking at the National Coun-cil of Provinces meeting earlier this week.

Maeko said the municipality is aware that the road can no longer cope with the traffic load. “We have the same problem with the road between Lephalale and Mokopane that uses two single bridges,” Maeko said.

“Roads Agency of Limpopo (RAL) and Exxaro are upgrading three district roads for us, but there are insufficient funds to fix all the roads around our area.”

The road between Vaalwater and Lepha-lale is notorious for the amount of accidents that occur at the temporary bridge. Charles

MOKOPANE - The municipality must strive to do better by interacting more with its community and responding fast-er to queries regarding delivery of basic services, Mogalakwena Mayor, Malesela Parks Sebatjane, said when he delivered his State of the Municipality Address at the Park Hotel this week.

Sebatjane said this was one of the recommendations by the National Council of Provinces during a recent oversight visit. He added that during the visit, Mogalakwena municipalty showed its commitment to focusing on strengthening good governance, institutional efficiency and increasing the pace of service delivery.

On the political turmoil of the past year the Mayor added that the municipality is determined that the local labour forum will contribute to the municipality’s healing pro-cess with regards to human resource issues. “A stable institution is in the best interest of

New beginning for Mogalakwena?all, more so to the people of Mogalakwena munici-pality.”

Sebatjane elaborated on the various commu-nity outreaches focusing mainly on service delivery related matters. Readers can read more on these points on the Northern News website at www.noordnuus.co.za.

The summary of Mo-galakwena Municipality’s budget for 2015/16 is as

follows: The total budget is R1 082 246 405.

The capital budget is R409 888 680 and the operating budget is R783 557 725.

“The future of our municipality is tied to our unwavering commitment, hard work, and forging of human solidarity with the people of Mogalakwena and the private sector partner-ships,” concluded Sebatjane.

No money to fix roads and bridges

Lekalakala, a truck driver who travels be-tween Gauteng and Lephalale on a weekly basis, says that he has seen three accidents where vehicles drove into the ditch next to the temporary bridge.

“I don’t know how the drivers can still have accidents while there are so many road markings indicating that there is road works in progress.

“I have even seen some trucks get stuck on the bridge because they are too big to pass through the structure,” Lekalakala says.

The temporary bridge was built by Exx-aro, Eskom and local farmers last year after the road was destroyed during floods.

According to Dries Basson, the DA coun-cilor for Waterberg district, the area was declared a disaster area and the road should have been repaired out of the disaster man-agement fund.

MARAPONG – Margaret Setuki (53), a resi-dent in Alfred Nzo street, says that sewage has been seeping into her yard since last Sunday. “The Lephalale municipality started to pump sewage from a pipeline the area on Sunday and since then it has been almost unbearable living in my house”

A municipal worker said that they were given instruction to pump the sewage from the pipeline into an open field behind Setuki’s house because the system was too full.

Setuki says that there are four adults and five young children living with her. “I am wor-ried about the health of the kids because the sewage is covering my entire back yard and the stench is unbearable.”

Francine Setuki (30) is also living on the premises with her 10-month old baby (see photo). “I am disgusted by the sewage and the municipality's lack of intervention.”

Stephen Manamela, the DA councilor living in the area, says it is inhumane to let people live in such conditions. “It is unac-ceptable to allow municipal workers to pump sewage into an area that is so close to resi-dential houses.”

After queries from Northern News, the municipality says that a standby team was called out on Sunday to unblock a pipe lead-ing to the sewage plant in Marapong. It was found that the line was blocked and immedi-ate action needed to be taken to prevent sewage from back-flowing into homes.

According to the municipality, by drain-

Sewage causes havoc

ing the pump the team managed to unblock the pipe and restore the flow of sewage in the area. They are investigating the incident and have sent out a team to clean the area, including Setuki’s home.

The municipality requests residents to re-frain from flushing hair pieces, diapers, sani-tary towels, condoms, cloth and other items down their toilets and drains. It is not advis-able to sweep dirt and sand into man holes as foreign objects block pipes and cause damage to the sewage system in general.

Community members are advised to report matters like these to the municipal-ity, their ward councilors or ward commit-tee members. Blockages can be reported to 082 306 9446.

Shape your child

5

By Minda Marshall

I sometimes shake my head in disbelief that we as parents have abdicated our position of authority in the lives of our children in such a gross way. They were entrusted to us; given into our care so that we can be the main shaping influence in their future success, but somehow we were duped into thinking it is the school, the teacher, the church, always someone else’s responsibility to shape them into pro-ficient and successful people.

Someone said: "...the world owes you nothing, it was here first!" As parents we should take note, and prepare ourselves and our children for positive future advance. Negative thoughts and destructive emotions can never take us to a successful future. Make the choice to pursue a better future by setting your mind on the positive. You can be the biggest influence for success in your child’s life!

In our previous discussion we looked at one of the ‘Habits of Mind’ - ‘Responding with wonderment and awe’. I hope that you have taken time to build this pattern into your child deliberately? Remember, change does not happen by chance, we must make a deliberate choice to action change in our own lives. If we value change, we will be sensitive to find opportunities and commit to bring about the changes that are needed.

We take a look at ‘persisting’. In today’s way of life it is easy to quit, and try some-thing new. At the first instance of a challeng-ing situation we tend to give up, to move on, and to find something or someone else. But studies have proven that success is connect-ed to action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they never quit.

We should teach our children to stick to the task at hand; to follow through to completion; to remain focused. Participating in sport is a wonderful opportunity to teach them this habit. Somehow the focus of sport became ‘winning the game at all cost’. In my perception this is the lowest form of success! True success is when participating in the sport builds a pattern for accurate LIFE into you. Just think of the races where a winning athlete turned back to help a fellow runner cross the finishing line! These are the ones we remember in the end.

We need to teach our children ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’! If they signed up for a sport – support them. Fin-ish the season, stay in it with them to teach them accurate ways of response in the face of failure. Don’t allow them to put the blame on the coach, the apparatus, the judges and the referee. Teach them how to have persis-tence, how to keep on practising until they get it right. I remember my daughter’s strug-gles with learning to do a handstand in gym-nastics. She was so discouraged, being left-handed, and seeing all her friends acquiring the skill, but not being able to get it right herself! She cried, wanted to quit and my heart was breaking for her! But I knew, if she quit now it would set a pattern in her mind for the rest of her life. We decided together that we wouldn’t stop until we get it right. I started finding out as much as I could, and supported her in every way I knew how… and she won a prize a few years later for the best rhythmic gymnast in the province. But it didn’t end there, today she is one of the best coaches in the province! Her gymnasts love her, because she knows how to help them lovingly to persist until they get it right.

Efficient people stick to a task until it is completed. They don’t give up easily. They are able to analyse a problem, and they develop a system, structure, or strategy to confront it. They have different strategies for solving different problems, and they employ a range of these strategies. Teach your child, help them to develop a ‘never quit’ attitude. In this life it is always about how we act and react to what is happening to and around us. The teacher at school cannot teach these most important principles of life to your child. These become the ‘life-structure’ that make the difference at the end of the day!
