What is MedlinePlus Connect?
• Behind the scenes system that connects information in the electronic health record to information in MedlinePlus
• Works for diagnoses, lab tests and medications
Potential Audiences
• Medical librarians• Regional Extension Centers (RECs)• Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)• HIT personnel– Hospitals and other healthcare organizations– Community college HIT program faculty
• Vendors (NLM)
Potential Barriers
• Lack of awareness (even at basic MedlinePlus level)
• Fear that “free” equates to low quality or extra work
• Vendors – no financial incentive
What have we done so far?
• Defined audiences• Key informant interviews• Convened day-long meeting – Consensus that toolkit would be most helpful– Brainstormed contents of toolkit– Future meetings will continue the work
Facts about Community Colleges
• Train everyone from EMTs to Health IT to RNs• Multi-disciplinary library staff!• Library as place• Faculty collaboration

• Roundtable discussion at AzLA• Site visits and training in Hawaii in April 2013

• A registry and results database of publicly and privately supported clinical studies of human participants conducted around the world
• 145,189 studies with locations in all 50 states and in 185 countries
• 95 million page views per month and 60,000 unique visitors daily
• Second most popular NLM database!
ClinicalTrials.gov Results
• Section 801 of the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA 801)
• Results information includes– Participant flow– Baseline characteristics– Outcome measures and statistical analyses– Adverse events
• 8,856 studies with results

• Provide public record of basic study results in a standardized format
• Promote fulfilling of ethical responsibility to participants; use of research results to contribute to medical knowledge
• Mitigate "publication" and "outcome reporting" biases
• Facilitate systematic reviews and other analyses of the research literature
