Principal’s Report
Dear Parents
School Support Staff
In this edition of the Drouin South PS newsletter I wish to acknowledge a hardworking team of
people at our school who do a great job supporting our most vulnerable students. This team is our Education (Integration) Support Staff and includes: Marisa Brown, Glenys Pentland, Jenny Eacott, Casey Middleton and Denise Palmer. These staff members work with individuals to support them in
their learning and with social development. Their work involves a lot of patience and flexibility as they are working with students who may have learning and social difficulties. They also contribute to a large range of other functions around the school including after school bus supervision,
Kidsmatter, Environment Club, Out of Hours School Care, playground duties, library upkeep, small group intervention and individual intervention programs such as “Bridges” and many more. I wish to thank them for their commitment and I am sure that you will all agree they do a wonderful job
for our students. Prep Information Evening for 2017
Our 2017 Prep Information evening will be held next Wednesday 15th June at 7.00pm in the Junior Learning Area. This is an opportunity for parents of 2017 Prep students to meet with our current Prep teachers and myself to hear about what to expect in a child’s first year at Drouin South PS.
Please spread the word if you know of any parents that may be interested in attending. Facebook
Effective communication with our families is something that we strive hard to achieve at Drouin South PS however in the busy lives we lead messages can often go astray! In an attempt to keep improving in this area we have set up a Drouin South Primary School Facebook page that we will
use to post messages on frequently. We urge all parents with Facebook accounts to “LIKE“ our page so that we can keep you informed of up and coming events and news. We will not be posting photos in which student faces are shown however we will try to make the page informative and
engaging. Please feel free to make comments on the posts, we just ask that you be positive and respectful as this is a great way of promoting our school in the wider community.
Mulch / Working Bee We have been generously donated a 9m3 load of mulch that we would love to have delivered prior to our working bee on June 19th. It is currently being stored by Allison Kruizinga at Koo Wee Rup
and will need to be collected. If you have a large trailer or truck and would be happy to make a trip or two, please contact the school to let us know and we’ll put Allison in touch with you. Please set aside some time on Sunday 19th June to come along to our working bee. We are
currently compiling a list of jobs for the morning and will finish with a sausage sizzle lunch. Please return the slip below if you are able to attend and help out!

Teaching and learning comes with many different challenges. Here in 5/6B we understand that learning is a lifelong endeavour, but does not need to be
something that is depressing! We have lots of fun with our learning and although there are serious learning times, the enjoyable stuff helps us to remain engaged and \
understand that there are lessons involved that will help us in the future. Below are a handful of the activities that we really love!
In 5/6B we enjoy our class reward which is chips and
a movie. To get our reward we have to earn 50 class
points by being respectful during assembly, or hav-
ing every one back on time from play times, or when
we are asked to be quiet and everyone is quiet
straight away, we will get a class point. There are a
few other ways to earn them too. It teaches us to be
respectful and to act as a team.

Cooking!
BBBB (Behaviour Bank Balance Book) is where we get fake
money in a fake account from doing good deeds.
What we do Money
Back on time (B.O.T) 30c
Mistake on board (M.O.B) 50c
Home reading 10c
There are also many other ways to earn money.
After the whole week of getting money, on Friday we can buy prizes from
the prize boxes. There are $2 $4 $6 $8 $10 $15 and $20 prizes. This
teaches us to save and count money and to be well behaved and
to just be AWESOME! By Willow and Holly
Hi I’m Piper. In 5/6B we enjoy doing Challenge
Ladder. Challenge Ladder is a maths game. You
have to choose a person to challenge and Mr.
Phillips chooses an equation for the two people
to answer. Every week it’s a different operation.
Whoever answered the equation first gets to
swap places with the other person, however if
the person who got challenged wins they don’t
swap, but the person who challenged moves
over and it’s the next persons go. This game
teaches people to answer equations quicker.
Also it helps with your resilience if you lose.
Class Sport!
On Mondays the whole class goes out to the tennis courts or
the hall at 2:15pm to play games like Battle Ball or Capture the
Flag. Battle ball is the same as Dodge Ball but you need to
knock the wickets down. Capture the Flag is when you have to
run into the enemy’s base and try to get in the circle without
them tagging you. Someone off your team has to get into the
enemy’s base and you have to throw the ball to them and they
have to get back on to your side. We do sport to get fit and
healthy. Kurtis & Jay
5/6B, also known as 5/6 brilliant, does cooking every
term. In Term 1 we made some very yummy
pancakes with some yum toppings. They were cream,
strawberries, maple syrup, sugar, lemon, blueberries,
sprinkles, butter, strawberry jam and the pancakes! The
cooking sessions help us to learn to cook, to
follow a recipe, to learn maths by measuring and we get to
eat food. By Iesha & Rachael
Speedy Maths Speedy maths is a great way for kids to learn their times tables, addition, etc. You get 6:00mins to complete 100 problems. Ff you get 100 you get to go to challenging and get rewards. If you don’t pass, that’s ok it just means you need to practise more. If you get an improvement the next time you do it then that is awesome! It helps us get faster at answering equations of each operation (x, ÷, - +). By Keahrna

Find the magnet is a game we play in 5/6B. To play we have to look for the magnet and
when we find it we go sit down in our seat, but don’t tell anyone or give it away. When we
look for it you don’t need to open or move or touch to see it. This game
teaches us persistence, resilience and honesty. It is always amusing to watch the last
person looking around for the magnet but they can’t see it. Don’t find it last. (Oakley) By Ainsley & Ella
In 5/6 B I enjoy doing PMP with the p/1/2s. With PMP we only get to do it every three weeks on a Friday. We do this because there are two other 5/6 grades. Every third Friday before lunch
we choose a partner in our grade that we haven’t been with before and then we are assigned an activity like: skipping,
dribbling a basketball, shooting, relay with a baton and so on and so forth. Then when lunch finishes we got and set up either on the basketball courts or the oval. Then we collect the group
of p/1/2s. When we hear the whistle we rotate and get another group of p/1/2s. PMP helps us with confidence.
By Tayla In 5/6B this year Mr Phillips puts a mistake on
the whiteboard and when we come into the
classroom our class has an hour to find it. Once
you find it you write it down on a piece of paper
and don’t show anyone. After an hour Mr
Phillips comes around and checks if you have
found the mistake, if you have found the mistake
you get 50 cents to buy rewards on Fridays. If
you have found a mistake that Mr Phillips didn’t
know was there you get extra money. Sometimes
it is very easy to find the mistake and sometimes
it is very challenging to find the mistake. Mr
Phillips puts a mistake on the board so we can
notice mistakes in our learning.

In 5/6B we enjoy playing
maths games. Greedy Pig
is one such game. It is
where you never know
when it’s going to land on
a 1 because the number 1
is the number you get out
on. Eloise is the current
champ on 157. We enjoy
Greedy Pig because it
helps us with our addition
and getting to know them
quickly.

F.O.O.F.T stands for Finish Off Or Free Time.
Every Friday afternoon if you have fin-
ished off all of your work for the week then
you get one hour of free time. If you haven’t
finished your work then you have to do it in
this time, for example your homework. Some
of the things people do during free time are
free time on the computers, connect four,
board games and holding stick insects. By
Chris and Joe.

Reading a photo is a reading
activity where you choose from a
pile of photos or images and you
write about it. You begin by
brainstorming words that the
photo makes you think of; you
‘read’ it. You then need to write an
interesting paragraph using the
brainstorm of words as a guide.
Reading a photo helps you
understand images and helps you
to make predictions.

Skunk is a maths game that we play in
56/B. We all like to play it. At the
moment I am the current champ; my
score is 243. This is how you play: the
teacher rolls 2 dice and at the first roll
if there’s a 1 it doesn’t count because
a 1 gets you out and you can’t go out
on the first go. There are 5 rounds. 1
for each letter in the word SKUNK.
When the teacher rolls a 1 we move to
the next round. Whoever gets the
highest score wins. This game helps
you to improve your addition. See you
later folks! By Larissa

Last Friday Sam represented the school as an individual competitor at the Balcombe
Grammar Interschool Equathlon. The Equathlon involved Sam swimming 50m, running 2km and doing a SHOWJUMPING round. Sam finished the Equathlon in 4th place. On Saturday Sam also competed at another interschool event, this time at the Assumption
College Showjumping Competition where Sam placed 5th. Terrific effort Sam!
