spoke so well on Assembly. We were appreciative of our delectable morning tea provided by our Hospitality students for our guests. A special aspect of our Awards was to present our Annual Arts Bursaries. The winner of the St Peter’s Primary Arts Bursary was Liana Kerr, whilst Brianna Van Der Meer took out the St Columban’s Bursary. Liana ( Yr 9) and Brianna (Yr 9) were identified as having special talents and commitment in Dance and Visual Arts for Liana and Music and Debating for Brianna. We thank St Peter’s for their generosity in supporting Arts pathways and showing their supportive links with our school. The Bursary provides an amount each year encouraging the extension and involvement in the Arts. Liana is a past student of St Peter’s, which made this award very special. Best Wishes to Year 12 Students for the Queensland Core Skills Test. Next week sees the challenge of the Queensland Core Skills Test for the Year 12 students. The QCS consists of four papers over two days. All of our Year 12 students are required to sit the QCS. There are two groups of students in Year 12. For the group who are ranking students, the results of the QCS counts individually toward their rank, and the result of “D” or above can only improve the rank. For the OP Eligilble group the individual result is part of a group score which scales the OP subject results up or down for the calculation of OP. This is why it is important for students to support each other as the whole team will be affected by an individual result. Paper 1 Writing Task paper.

Must have 600 words eg 8 X 70-80 word (8-10 line) paragraph (if 2/3 word count only 2/3 marks to start with).

Must have title. Must directly relate to the concept and the stimulus which is ticked on front cover.

Paper 2 Multiple Choice (50 questions)

Read questions first—use perusal to read the stimulus with lots of text. Highlight key words. Eliminate wrong answers. Aim to answer ten questions every 15 minutes. Answer all questions (15 minutes left to go back to harder ones).

Paper 3 (short response) Read question first. HISTPAR method

Highlight—read question first Item—understand task / make a list. Stimulus—find information needed. Think—best problem-solving strategy. Plan—best format for answer. Answer—include key word and support with evidence in SENTENCES unless directed otherwise. Re-read—check task is answered.

Use visual literacy tools—analyse using visual texts

Arrangement Texture Colour Depth Line Light Interpretation Shape & Size Mood

Be confident with mathematical/science questions—they are often much easier than they look. Questions will

involve percentages, ratio, using compass/protractor, simple algebra, substitution, problem-solving, graphs, space and measurement, reading tables, statistics, consumer maths, reading maps. Use common sense and work through by steps/elimination—draw a diagram or picture to show the problem.

Visual Art We congratulate Georgia Gwyn and Leteisha Shaw on having their artworks selected for the Creative Generation Excellence in Visual Art awards for 2014. The Awards recognise and promotes excellence in senior visual arts education throughout Queensland’s state and non-state schools. The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for the community to see the very best of senior school student art, as well as an opportunity for the students to see their work presented in a public art gallery in the University environment. The official opening was Thursday 21 August and the exhibition will runs until Saturday 13 September at the Sunshine Coast University Gallery.

Debating News The inaugural Sunshine Coast ‘Chancellor’s Challenge’ Debating Competition kicked off last week at Grace Lutheran College for both the Intermediate and Senior Divisions. Congratulations to our Intermediate Team – Holly Baxter, Kylara Talbett and Olivia Coleman. While they were narrowly defeated, they showed courage and spirit and were able to present really strong arguments on the night. A further big congratulations to our Senior Team – Corey Fysh, Brittany Cooper and Georgia Hayes who were successful in their round. Well done!! A big thank you also to Johnpaul Gonzo and Hannah Grundy who have volunteered as adjudicators in this competition. This shows your commitment, skill and leadership in debating and we are very grateful for your time and expertise. The competition would not be able to run without the support of talented volunteer adjudicators, giving up their time to provide feedback and support to our aspiring debaters. Design and Living Technology Faculty This week has been another busy week for the DLT Faculty. On Monday, our Year 11 and 12 Home Economics students ventured into the hills of Maleny for a food technology tour. We visited local food producers – Maleny Cheese and Maleny Dairy. Students are currently investigating a unit on the ‘slow food movement’. From the hills of Maleny we then traveled to Kunara Organic Market place and the Strawberry fields where students became a real life food technologist experiencing the strawberry production process from paddock to plate. What a superb experience this provided for the students to see what wonderful local produce we have so close to use. On Friday afternoon, a group of 30 Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students ventured into ‘Eat Street Markets’ to experience some wonderful culinary delights and great food culture. It was wonderful to be able to provide the students with an opportunity such as this. What a wonderful way to spend a Friday night, immersed in delectable food, good company and great entertainment. Thanks to Henry Rose for driving the College bus. This week, the Hospitality students will host a range of functions. We have the monthly Zonta Club of Caboolture dinner meet, the great debate evening as well as a morning tea to celebrate the success of our curriculum leaders and the arts bursary recipients. Life is always busy for our Hospitality students. Our certificate 1 – year 11 Construction students will also undertake their White Card training on Friday morning in Bobbio Café. Good luck to all students involved with this. Can I also take this opportunity to remind all year 11 Hospitality, Kitchen Operations, Childcare and Construction students to ensure they have organized their work placement for the last week of term. This work placement is mandatory, please have a chat with your class teacher should you have any concerns regarding the organization of this placement. Senior AFL

Another long road trip this week. Special thanks are due to players and families for their support of the players and teams on these away games. Year 8 Blue – Ms Aleisha Gubesch (and Ms Jess Grehan) Round 6 (37-17) Under Jess’ tutorship this week the boys played well again this week. Despite being a player down the boys worked hard and continue to develop and enjoy their basketball. The scoring is more consistent, turnovers fewer and defense stronger. Kevin Young and Samuel Hawthorne showed skills in the game this week that they have only just been introduced to. Year 8 Gold – Mr Michael Kerr Round 6 (37-11) It took half the game to get a read on defence and get the offence started. After half time our full court press started to reap results and we pulled away to record a comfortable win. Special mention to Mitchell Scotland and Logan James, who played up this week to help cover short numbers. Zane Brown's speed and height was the difference that allowed us to press the advantage. Year 9 – Mr James Clark (and Mr Andrew Josey) Round 6 (17-33) It was nice to have a couple of extra players back for this game. While it will take time for the team to gel, they continue to show the effort and improvement that player should be proud of. Year 10 – Mr Travis Rock Round 6 (24-28) With a few key players down this was always going to be a tough game. Being level in the final minutes proved the competitiveness of the six available players. Unfortunately the calls didn’t fall their way in the final minutes. Particular credit is due to Reuben Dance who held up the middle as the only big, playing almost the entire game. Seconds – Mr Michael Connolly (and Mr Jeff Thomas) Round 6 (45-14) Another great result for the B team, this week saw the team dominate in the first quarter which set up a great result for the team. A complete team effort saw plenty of scoring opportunities created for all team members. The experienced players are offering great support for this team and the team combining together very well. Matty Parker had the crowd on their feet several times through his great efforts. Thanks must be given to the Canterbury College team which showed great sportsmanship during this game. Special thanks are also due to Jeff Thomas for his coaching over the last few weeks. Firsts – Mr Vince Webb (and Mr Hans Gubesch) Round 6 (80-47) This was out first real test for the season with Canterbury high on the ladder and having had some good results. It was fitting then to put our best game together at both ends of the court. Defensively, players gave no easy lanes and rebounding was solid. Off the back of this defense and the resulting turnovers the offense flowed. Whether on the break or through great ball movement the scoreboard ticked over with great shot selection and good finishing. The extra pass was a highlight. Josh Donaldson had a great game proving dominant in the middle. Kelsey Richards produced some great finishes off great running.
