We often refer to 2003 as a transitionyear. We have extensively upgradedseveral of our service rigs, and wehave used a lot of resources in orderto succeed with subsea well inter-vention. At the same time, we haveworked hard to ensure new contractsfor all our business areas. This hasgiven results, and 2003 will be thebest year in the company’s history interms of order intake and orderbacklog. Hereby, we have laid a solidfoundation for further profitabledevelopment of the business.

We are the market leader in theniches we focus on, and the generaloutlook for these markets is positive, also in a longer term. Within OffshoreSupport Services, the general outlookfor accommodation and well inter-vention work is positive, both inNorway and internationally. Activitywithin the FPSO segment is picking up,and we aim to win a new project in2004. The activity level within DrillingServices is expected to remain high in

the future, and we are activelymarketing the lightweight rig Rubiconin order to ensure a new contract.

“Innovation” is one of our core values, and we work actively with thedevelopment of new technology andthe application of existing technologyin new areas. Maintaining a high oiland gas production in the North Seain the years ahead requires innovationand restructuring in the industry.Prosafe Drilling Services has enteredinto a co-operation agreement withPetroleum Engineering and Consultingin order to adapt to the new chal-lenges in the market. The companiescomplement each other, and possess aunique competence with regards toattending and managing an oil- and/or gas well’s life cycle. The co-operationhas already resulted in a frameworkagreement with Norsk Hydro fordrilling and well engineering services. This is a basis for further developmentof our Well Construction Managementin the North Sea.

Reidar Lund, Chairman of the Boardand former CEO of Prosafe ASA, wason 25 September 2003 awarded theNorrøna prize 2003. The prize waspresented at the 32nd yearly Norrønaconference, which has the aim to focuson business related affairs in thesouthwest region of Norway.

Reidar Lund was awarded the prize forhis outstanding efforts over a longperiod of time, both nationally andinternationally. The jury substantiatesthe election of Reidar Lund as follows:“Reidar Lund is the person who hasguided Prosafe to where the companyis today, a leading player within all itsbusiness areas, after the companydemerged from Transocean in 1997.”

Maiken Ims, member of the NorrønaBoard, comments as follows:–The audience’s response to the

election of this year’s winner wasextremely positive. All participants tothe conference agreed that we hadmade the right choice. Reidar Lundhas contributed to the developmentof not only his own company, butalso of other companies. He has forexample been board member of OLF (Oil Industry Association) andNHO (Confederation of NorwegianBusiness and Industry), and hascontributed to a wide spectre ofaffairs in the society.

In his speech of thanks, Reidar Lundemphasised the human capital ofProsafe.–The bottom line is important, but mymain driver has always been to seehow people grow, said Reidar Lund.He urged for focusing on knowledgedevelopment on the same level withother investments.

We are proud of having performedProsafe’s first subsea well interventioncampaign ever. In October andNovember, MSV Regalia has success-fully intervened wells at the Statfjord,Visund and Åsgard fields for Statoil. Inthe start of the campaign, we hadsome down-time due to running-inproblems with the subsea equipment, which has costed more money thanplanned. But, we have managed toadopt a new cost-efficient concept, at the same time giving the highestpossible priority to health, safety andthe environment. Statoil has in a newsannouncement stated that use of thistechnology will reduce the costsrelated to well intervention to one-third of today’s cost. The concept hasproved its functionality and potential, and is by Statoil referred to as “aworld-class breakthrough”. Theonshore and offshore organisations, the rig, the subsea equipment and notleast the subsea cable operations havefunctioned well, even under harshweather conditions.

On 22nd and 23rd October, I had theopportunity to attend Prosafe DrillingServices’ (PDS) Health, Safety andEnvironment Conference (HSEConference). PDS arranged theconference for the third time, and the number of internal and externalparticipants was higher than ever –there were about 170 participants, inclusive representatives from clients, vendors and the Norwegian PetroleumDirectorate. I was positively surprisedat the high level of the conference. The speeches were interesting, rele-vant and catchy, and the participants’genuine enthusiasm was contagious.Prosafe has the last years had excellentHSE results, and our clients remind uscontinuously about the competitiveedge that this gives us. Focus on HSEremains extremely important.

The HSE Conference focused amongothers on how important it is that allProsafe employees live up to theestablished behavioural norms. Bydoing so, we can create a strong HSE

and company culture. The norms aredescribed in the booklets ”Fokus” inProsafe Drilling Services, ”Set theCourse” in Prosafe Offshore and”Astrolabio” in Prosafe Production. These norms are deeply rooted in ourcore values. Additionally, we have aset of codes of conduct that isavailable both as a hard copy and onour web site www.prosafe.com

This year, as last year, we have decidedthat we will not send Season’sGreetings cards to our businessrelations. We will rather give acorresponding amount of money toUNICEF. By doing this, we showcorporate citizenship in line withProsafe’s core values.

Greetings of the season, and my bestwishes for a Happy New Year!

Safe Caledonia is operating in DP mode and is gangway connected to the Bayu-Undan platform.

By John Ibbotson, Marine ProjectManager, Prosafe Offshore Ltd.

The traditional market for semi-submersible accommodation rigs hasbeen concentrated in the North Seaand the Gulf of Mexico. Prosafe has a strategy of moving into new geo-graphical areas, and this first contractoff-Australia represents an importantmilestone towards this goal. InNovember, Prosafe was awarded aLetter of Intent for a six-month con-tract for MSV Regalia in West Africa, which is another major milestone.

Safe Caledonia – an advanced service vesselSafe Caledonia is a semi-submersibleaccommodation vessel of theEnhanced Pacesetter design. In 1999,she was upgraded to DynamicPositioning (DP) Class 1. She has a tenpoint mooring system, can accommo-date 550 persons in a high standardaccommodation and provides theclient with deck and warehousefacilities, machine and welding shopand craneage up to 50 ton capacity, gangway services (water, fuel, firemain, air and communications), office

spaces plus IT. The recreational areaconsists of a gymnasium, male andfemale saunas, a cinema for 144persons and high grade messingfacilities for 240 persons per sitting.

Intensive mobilisation periodIn May 2002, the vessel underwent anintensive mobilisation at the CCB yardprior to commencing the Sleipnercontract in the North Sea for Statoil. On completion of the Sleipnercontract, she proceeded to theWestCon yard in Ølen, Norway toprepare for the towage and the

Since April 2003, Prosafe has been represented “down-under”. Safe Caledonia isproviding offshore accommodation services during the installation and commissioningof the Bayu-Undan Gas Recycle Platforms. The Bayu-Undan field is being operated byConocoPhillips, and is located in the Timor Sea between Australia and East Timor.

Prosafe “down under”

contract at the Bayu-Undan field inthe Timor Sea for ConocoPhillips (91-12) Pty. Ltd. During this mobilisationperiod, the gangway pedestal andaccess were significantly extended tofacilitate the landing of the SafeCaledonia gangway on the Bayu-Undan platform helideck.

Four mooring wires were replaced as per the company’s mooring wiremaintenance policy (the other six were replaced in the CCB yard inBergen prior to the Sleipner contract). The accommodation, catering andrecreational area upgrade, whichcommenced in the CCB yard andincluded a complete new galley, equipment and servery area, wascontinued. Significant remedial workwas carried out on the vessel’s systemsand pipe work. The remaining twothrusters were changed out, the firsttwo having being changed at CCB.

Mid-December 2002, the rig departedØlen after the successful mobilisation. After having carried out annual DPtrials in the fjord, the vessel commen-ced the tow to the Timor Sea, arrivingon location early May 2003.

Passage fromNorway to East TimorWith the allocatedtime frame, themost economicaloption for tran-sportation of thevessel was to wettow her to EastTimor. The tow ves-sel was charteredthrough SmitwijsInternational Ltd.and the route wasagreed. The pas-sage to East Timorwas split into threestages: Norway to Las Palmas,Canaries; Las Palmas to Durban,South Africa; Durban to the Bayu-Undan field, Timor Sea. The totaldistance was 13,244nm, and thisdistance would be covered in 129days.

On the Norway to Las Palmaspassage, in the Bay of Biscay, adverse

weather required the Safe Caledoniato ballast down to survival draughtto prevent structural damage. Thiswas skillfully achieved by the vessel’screw in co-operation with the towvessel. Only 48 hours towage timewas lost during this operation.

The first two stages of the tow werecompleted with 12 marine crew, asdefined by the vessel’s flag state, Isleof Man, and two caterers. FromDurban onwards, the marine crewwas increased and a number ofspecialist contractors were on boardto complete the mobilisation whichconsisted of complete replacementof the air conditioning system, replacement of the halon firesmothering system with a moreenvironmentally friendly medium, and plating of the afterdeck workarea. This work was completed onschedule shortly after the arrival atthe Bayu-Undan field.

Contract with ConocoPhillipsThe Bayu-Undan Gas RecycleDevelopment is a world class project. The field life is estimated to be 20years, with production planned to

commence early2004. Installationof the Bayu-Undan Drilling,Production &ProcessingPlatform (DPP)and the Compres-sion, Utilities &Quarters Platform(CUQ) was com-pleted in mid-2003, using thefloat over method,the units weighing11,000 tonnes and15,000 tonnesrespectively.

In support of the above, SafeCaledonia’s contract was initially foreight months with six month options.ConocoPhillips has to date fixed atwo-month option with a final two-month further option to be declaredby March 2004. If confirmed, it willextend the contract completion dateto June 2004.

The jury substantiates their choice bysaying that Prosafe has delivered anannual report that is far better thanthe average. They emphasise that thereport is very informative, and high-light especially the chapter aboutCorporate Governance, which is well-structured and combines relevantinformation with credibility.

One step ahead of the other companiesThe jury says among others thefollowing: “The annual report is ofvery high quality compared with othercomparable companies. The Director’sReport is well-structured and clearly

set out. In the chapter about Corpo-rate Governance, Prosafe is one stepahead of the other companies. Anexample of this is the report of thecompany’s core values and codes ofconduct, which is exceptional clearand unambiguous. Other companiesshould be inspired by Prosafe’s chapterabout Corporate Governance.”Martin Kolnes, Corporate Controller inProsafe says that a team consisting ofseven persons in Prosafe ASA hasprepared the annual report.–We have tried to improve theweaknesses of previous reports, at thesame time further developing thestrong points. We start the prepara-tion of the annual report in earlyautumn, and put a lot of work into it.

–When being awarded the main prizein competition with large Norwegiancompanies with far more resources, such as for instance SAS, Orkla, Statoiland Norsk Hydro, we have all reasonto be proud.

Prosafe emphasises having an openinformation policy–It is a great honour to be awardedthis prize, says President & CEO ArneAustreid. The prize recognises ourefforts to keep our stakeholders well-informed. We want our stakeholdersto know about and be confident inour internal control and managementsystems, and place great emphasis onhaving an open information policy.Prosafe will continue to endeavour todeliver good results and credibleinformation.

This design can beused as a model by other companies. The navigation is swiftly, and the totalimpression is very good. This is one ofthe best web versions in this year’scontest, even though it did not reacha place among the three best.”

–There are many reasons why we havedecided to support UNICEF, says Exec.V.P. Corporate Relations Roy Hallås.

–The organisation is well reputed forits work for the world’s children.UNICEF works to ensure that therights of all children, regardless ofnationality, religion or gender, arefulfilled in accordance with theUnited Nation’s Convention on theRights of the Child: the right forsurvival, development, protection andparticipation. They vaccinate childrenall over the world against the sixmost common life-threateningdiseases, and they ensure thatchildren have the opportunity to geteducation, right food and cleandrinking water.

Roy Hallås further says that it is impor-tant for Prosafe that as much as possi-ble of the donation effectively is usedto help children. As much as 93 percentof the money we donate to UNICEF isdirectly used for programs and projectsfor children in the whole world.

–It makes us happy to see theconsideration you show for childrenin other parts of the world bygiving a donation to UNICEF’s work, says General Secretary Kjersti F.Gjestvang in UNICEF Norway.

–In the end of 2003, we still live in aworld with large variations in the con-ditions for children while growing up.UNICEF works continuously to correctthis, and wishes to contribute to non-discrimination. We work for perma-nent improvements in children’s future

without creating differences betweenchildren in the local environment, saysKjersti F. Gjestvang.

What will the money be used for?–Education is the most valuable giftwe can offer a child. For UNICEFNorway, this means more specificallythat we will contribute to improve theeducational conditions for children inEritrea. 56% of the children thatshould go to primary school in Eritrea,do not go to school at all. Many ofthem do not have a school to go to,and they lack teachers and educa-tional material. Prosafe’s donationenables us to help 1 200 children withfundamental educational material, which they otherwise would not havehad. With the knowledge they gainthrough this, they can influence theirown future.–Again, thank you so much for yoursupport, says General Secretary KjerstiF. Gjestvang in UNICEF Norway.

Donation to UNICEFRather than sending Season’s Greetings cards to ouremployees and business relations, we have also thisyear chosen to support a charitable organisation.UNICEF has received a donation of NOK 30 000.

Crane & Lifting Forum 2003In November, PDS gathered employeesfrom the whole company, representa-tives from our clients Statoil andExxonMobil, and from Sintef and theNorwegian Petroleum Directorate(NPD) to a Crane & Lifting Forum. The forum took place at PDS’s newlyestablished training centre inTrondheim, Norway. The vendors oflifting gear were represented by thecompany Erling Haug AS.

–The sole reason for establishing thistraining centre is to enhance safety in our operations. We already can document significant improvementsin relation to crane and liftingoperations, said Petter Tomren,President of PDS, during the openingsession of the Crane & Lifting Forum2003.

–Our clients constantly seek improvedefficiency and reduced risk. We willmaintain our ability to deliver this. It is not unproblematic, but wemanage to do so. We have managedto create a competent crane andlifting expertise that gives confidence, both internally and externally amongclients and our partners.

–A credible HSE standard is funda-mental for our clients’ confidence, and thereby a fundament forsecuring our workplaces. Theresources spent on our crane andlifting training efforts are an impor-tant contribution to create an HSE-culture characterised by openness andco-operation, Petter Tomren said inhis opening speech.

Riggers’ training strongly improvedThe way of rigging is actually signifi-cant for the lifting devices’ breakingload. This can be of vital importanceand can determine whether a liftingoperation is successfully or fails. In theworst case, it can mean life or death. The Crane & Lifting Centre has been a driving force to co-ordinate therequirements to the rigging educationin Norway’s offshore industry.

–Transferring theory into practicerequires training. Therefore, ourriggers’ course is based on 10%theory and 90% training, says MortenNormo, Manager Crane & MaterialHandling in PDS. Our training centreis the only one in Norway thatactually offers training on materialwinches and personnel winches.

Senior Engineer Henrik Meling fromthe NPD claims that the general level

of training for riggers traditionallyhas been on a too low level. He givesPDS credit for being the driving forcebehind rigging training. – It isdifficult to see that the industrywould have arrived at the currenttraining level without the effortsfrom Prosafe, Henrik Meling says.

However, he is of the opinion thatthe Norwegian petroleum industrystill has a way to go when it comes to crane and lifting operations. –Incident reports from the NorwegianContinental Shelf and NPD’s investiga-tion of serious accidents show thatcollective violation of proceduresoften is an important cause. Collec-tive violation means that a number ofpeople actually are aware of proce-dures not being followed, but theydo not intervene to stop the actualoperation. This is totally unaccep-table, Henrik Meling stated.

Part of the explanation can be thatchanges take time, especially when it comes to changing old habits. Co-operation and co-training arecentral elements of the processtowards changed behaviour of ateam. Bjørn Madsen from Sintefexplained at the Crane & LiftingForum that de-learning is an inherentrisk in all learning processes. –It is not

Our drilling operations include thousands of lifting and material handling operationsevery year. Items weighing from 10 to 50 000 kg must be handled in a safe andefficient way. It goes without saying that these operations represent significantinherent risks. One single mistake can result in dramatic consequences. ProsafeDrilling Services (PDS) has taken this seriously, and has responded to the challenges by establishing a national training centre for crane and lifting operations.

A new era for craneand lifting training

easy for individuals to return to thedaily life after having attended acourse and having obtained newknowledge about potentially betterways of doing things. There are manyhurdles to jump over before a com-plete crew actually changes theirroutines and behaviour. It is achallenge to withstand de-learning,Bjørn Madsen said.

Bringing learning to employeesThe establishment of the trainingcentre is part of a systematic effort toenhance competence and training inPDS. Practical training, as it is carriedout at the training centre, is veryimportant. PDS is, however, challenging the traditional way oftraining employees. Instead ofsending people to classrooms, PDS isnow bringing learning to theemployees through ProLearn.

–ProLearn represents the PDS methodfor the development and executionof interactive training, tells StigAndersen, Education Manager in PDS.In addition to the specialised Craneand Lifting Training, ProLearncomprises Computer Based Training(CBT) and Web-based Training (WBT),says Stig Andersen.

CBTs are tailor-made trainingprograms for offshore operations. The information from equipmentvendors is being “extended” withpictures, films and animations of theequipment in operation. The menuprovides access to pictures and videosequences of equipment in operation, with descriptions of the maintenanceand operation of the equipment. Each crew member is provided with acopy of the CD for personal use off-shore or at home. New personnel will

go through the program prior to goingoffshore, to familiarise themselveswith the equipment. CBTs have beensuccessfully delivered to operations forHydro, Statoil and ExxonMobil.

WBT is a further development of CBT,and comprises training of special workprocesses. By using pictures, film andanimation in the learning process, the employee will take the role of an information seeker instead of aninformation recipient. The web basedtraining program will be a tool forgaining an individual knowledge base.

–Based on the training logs for PDSemployees, we develop electronictraining programmes that make itpossible to learn about our workingprocesses irrespective of time andplace. In relation to crane and liftingtraining, we have concrete plans for

the development of electronic liftingstations offshore, where relevantinformation about the equipment willbe easily accessible to the crews. Theywill no longer have to work their waythrough thick manuals, which can beboth time consuming and difficult, says Stig Andersen.

Individual initiative andengagement...The process to increase the person-nel’s competence about crane andmaterial handling, and to establishimprovement initiatives, started in2002. Morten Normo and SteveTverrå have been, and still are, important driving forces for theestablishment of the centre. MortenNormo was employed as ManagerCrane & Material Handling in PDS.–My mission is to introduce a uniform“best practice” for lifting operationsacross the offshore field borders, saysMorten Normo enthusiastically. Thus far, these efforts have resultedin a brand new training program withseveral new courses and the establish-ment of the training centre. Thetraining centre includes a 300 m2

indoors ”offshore module” which isbuilt to re-create the challenges onecan face when performing liftingoperations offshore.

In 2002, there were approximately370 course participants and so far in2003 there have been about 500participants. – Never before, have somany persons been given so muchtraining on cranes and lifting opera-tions over such a short period of time, says Morten Normo.

The juryemphasised his strong engagement, his creativity and ability for problemsolving and his motivationalcapabilities. –Committed colleagues, aproactive management and focusshould be the fundament for safecrane and lifting operations. Manyincidents are due to loss of focusfrom one or more of the peopleinvolved, says Morten Normo.

–The intention of ProLearn is to utilise the available information technologyand the operational experience among our offshore crews to tailor-maketraining programmes for each operation says Stig Andersen, EducationManager in PDS.

Within drilling services, 22 drillingcontractors and 17 service companiesoperating world-wide for ExxonMobilwere evaluated. PDS was awardedthe Drilling Safety Award for havingachieved ExxonMobil’s target of a TRIfrequency < 0,8 (Total RecordedIncidents) in 2002.

–We are proud of being awardedExxonMobil’s safety prize, says Arne Austreid, President & CEO inProsafe. ExxonMobil is the world’slargest oil company and is ademanding client, not least when it concerns Health, Safety and theEnvironment (HSE). Demandingclients contribute to our ownimprovement, because wecontinuously must do our best toachieve better and better results. The prize shows that PDS holds ahigh international standard.

–I would like to praise our employeesat the Jotun- and Ringhorneoperations who have deliveredefficient drilling operations duringmany years, at the same timeupkeeping HSE standards in aprofessional manner. Prosafe was the main contractor for the campaign, and has used the combined resources of FMCKongsberg Subsea, Maritime WellServices and Oceaneering to providea complete Riserless Light WellIntervention service.

–Light intervention of subsea wellshas traditionally been done bymobile drilling rigs. In many cases, intervention work has beenpostponed or not carried out at all due to the cost being in excess of the reasonable expected benefitsfrom increased recovery from thewells. We have now shown that wehave the equipment and the crewsavailable to give some fields on theNorwegian Continental Shelf a newera, says Stig Hetlevik, V.P. WellIntervention in Prosafe Offshore.Smaller fields that were deemednon-profitable, now can be lookedat again, says Stig Hetlevik.

The client is delighted as well. ØivindReinertsen, Vice President for theTampen area in the North Sea, saysthe following in a newsannouncement by Statoil:–“Use of this technology will reducethe costs related to well interventionto one-third of today’s cost. This willcontribute to reduce the operationcosts, extend the life of fields, andincrease the oil recovery from subsea

fields. The increased activity that this will bring along, will in the next stage contribute to securingimportant workplaces in the future. The operations at the subsea fieldsStatfjord, Visund and Åsgard haveconfirmed that this technologyrepresents a break-through of world class.”

–In the start of the campaign, wehad some down-time due torunning-in problems with the subseaequipment, which has costed usmore money than planned. But, we have managed to adopt a newcost-efficient concept, at the sametime giving the highest possiblepriority to health, safety and the

environment. The onshore andoffshore organisations, the rig, thesubsea equipment and not least thesubsea cable operations havefunctioned well, tells Stig Hetlevik.

Intervention operations were safelycarried out under demandingweather conditions, with more than 50 knots wind, 5m significantwave height and up to 3m of vesselheave.–We consider MSV Regalia capable of all-year intervention activitieswith favourable operability also forthe winter months in harsh environ-ments, says Stig Hetlevik.

A world-class technologicalbreakthroughPersistent efforts give results. We are proud of having performed Prosafe’s firstsubsea well intervention campaign ever. MSV Regalia has recently completed itswell intervention operations for Statoil on the Statfjord, Visund and Åsgard fieldsin a safe and efficient manner.
