NEWS YOU CAN USE

The Rashtriya Military Schools

1. Entry Age : Candidates(Boys) between 10-11 yrs for Class VI and between 13-14 yrs for Class IX as on 01 Jul 2016 are eligible. Six months relaxation in upper age limit is permissible for the wards of personnel Killed in Action.

2. Educational qualification: For Class VI, No previous education qualification is mandatory. For class IX, a candidate should have passed Class VIII from a Govt/recognized school before the date of admission to a Rashtriya Military School. However, students studying in Class VIII are eligible to appear in the entrance test for Class IX.

3. Entrance Exam: Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to Class VI and IX will be held on 20 Dec 2015(Sunday). The exam will be automated OMR based in subjects as given below:-

(a) Class VI - Intelligence, General Knowledge, Mathematics and English of Class V standard.(b) Class IX - English, Hindi, Social Science, Mathematics and Science of Class VIII standard.(c) Candidates who clear the CET and are figuring in the merit list will be required to appear for Interview at respective Rashtriya Military Schools. Admit Cards & results will be hosted on the School website www.rashtriyamilitaryschools.in on internet.(d) Selected candidates will have to undergo medical exam at nominated Military Hospitals and only those found medically fit will be offered admission.

4. Application Forms. Prospectus and Application forms can be obtained by hand from any Rashtriya Military Schools by paying Rs. 500/- (Rs. 250/- in case of SC/ST) through Cash/DD. Prospectus and Application form can also be obtained through post by forwarding self addressed slip and Rs. 550/- (Rs. 300/- for SC/ST) (including Rs 50/- for postage) through Demand Draft payable at respective Rashtriya Military School (in favour of “Principal, Rashtriya Military School”). List of Exam Centres is given with application form. ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE ROUTED THROUGH RASHTRIYA MILITARY SCHOOL ONLY. Last date of submission of completely filled application forms is 15 Oct 2015.

ADMISSION FOR THE RASHTRIYA MILITARY SCHOOLS AND THE RASHTRIYA INDIAN MILITARY COLLEGE OF INDIA FOR ACADEMIC SESSION 2016-17

The Rashtriya Indian Military College

1. Entry Age : Candidates(Boys) should not be less then 11½ years in age but should not have attained 13 yrs as on 01 Jul 2016, i.e. they should not have been born not earlier than 02 Jul 2003 & not later than 01 Jan 2005.

2. Educational qualification: Candidates should either be studying in Class VII or passed Class VIII from a recognized school before the time of admission to the RIMC i.e. on 01 Jul 2016.

3. Entrance Exam.(a) Written Exam– English(1000-1200hrs), and Mathematics(1400-1530hrs) on 01 Dec 15 and General Knowledge (1000-1100hrs) on 02 Dec 15. Minimum pass mark is 50%.(b) Viva Voce-Interview shall be on 05 Apr 16 for candidates who qualify in written exam. Minimum pass mark in interview is 50% and the confirmation on interview will be intimated latest by March 2016. (c ) Selected candidates will have to undergo medical exam at nominated Military Hospitals and only those found medically fit will be offered admission.

4. Examination Centre’s are generally located in the state capitals or in cities/towns as per advertised.

5. Application Forms: The prospectus-cum-application form and booklet of old question papers can be obtained by registered post/speed post by sending a written request with an account payee bank demand draft of Rs 430/-(Registered post) or Rs 480/-(For Speed Post) for general candidates and Rs 385/- (Registered post) or Rs 435/-(For Speed Post) for SC/ST candidates. The demand draft will be made in favour of THE COMMANDANT RIMC DEHRADUN, DRAWEE BRANCH, STATE BANK OF INDIA, TEL BHAVAN, DEHRADUN, (BANK CODE– 01576) UTTARAKHAND. The address should be typed/written clearly in CAPITAL LETTERS with pin code and contact no. Application forms should reach the respective Govts(as specified in the press note) of which their parents/guardians are domicile of, by 30 Sep 2015. Kindly note that the application should be sent to the State Govts and not to the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Pride of the Nationindian Army

After more than two hundred years of British rule, India finally won back its freedom on 15th August, 1947. It was

a birth of a new nation and a new beginning. The country celebrated its 69th year of independence on 15 August 2015 and we take this opportunity to salute our brave hearts who laid their life in safeguarding our motherland. Their memories shall remain etched in our minds and their sacrifices shall continue to inspire every citizen.

In the run up to the Independence Day, Know Your Army Exhibitions were conducted at several military stations with the aim of motivating the youth in joining the Indian Army.

The Army continued to be involved in Disaster and Flood relief operation in the areas of Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir.

This issue carries a special message from The Chief Of Army Staff to the winners of the National Sports Award which was presented by the President of India on 29 Aug 15. 69TH INDEPENDENCE DAY

The 69th Independence day was celebrated all over India with fervent zeal and patriotism. In the capital the Hon’ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee

laid wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti alongwith all three Service Chiefs. At Red Fort Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the Guard of Honour and unfurled the Indian Tricolour which was synchronised with the official 21-gun salute fired by the gunners of the elite 871 Field Regiment. The Army’s contingent for Prime Minister’s Guard was drawn from the 8th Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry (Siachen) and was commanded by Major Sumiran Vyas.

To celebrate this years Independence day in a special manner, Big Fm 92.7 team hosted an event for the Indian Army troops posted at Siachen. RJs – Prateek, Balaji, Shruthi and Abhimanyu interacted with soldiers over conversations and games and singer Aakriti Kakkar performed some soulful songs and renditions. RJs also collected messages from family members of soldiers stationed at Siachen and read out all messages to them as part of ‘BIG Paigham – Sarhad Ke Naam’, campaign.

In continuation with the Independence Day celebrations Indian and Chinese Military Celebrated Independence Day at Kibithu(Walong), Natu La Pass(Sikkim), Bumla(Tawang) and Chushul(Ladakh). The troops of Indian Army and People’s Liberation Army of China came together for a joint celebration. The celebration at Chushul showcased the Indian culture and traditions which included traditional dances and songs. Also, an old form of martial art called ‘Gatka’ was performed by the troops and the ‘Dare Devils’ of the Indian Army Signal Regiment performed acrobatics on their motorcycle. A Volley ball match was also organised fielding mixed team of both Indian and Chinese troops.

J&K AND NORTH EAST DIARY MEDICAL AND VETERINARY CAMP BY ARMY IN PANIKHER In order to assist the locals and obviate the shortage of medical facilities, a medical camp was organised at Panikher for the Bakarwals as well as locals of the Suru Valley on 29 Jul 2015. This remote town in the Suru Valley with very few medical and veterinary hospitals is 70 kms from Kargil. A total of 180 civilians including Bakarwals were provided treatment during the camp.

BORDER PERSONNEL MEETING (BPM) A Ceremonial Border Personnel Meeting (BPM) on the occasion of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Day was conducted on 01 Aug 15 at Chinese BPM Hut in Moldo Garrison in Chushul Sector of Eastern Ladakh. The Delegations were led by Brigadier JKS Virk, SM from the Indian Side and Senior Colonel Chen Zheng Shan from the Chinese Side.

An Educational/ Motivational Tour was organized as part of OP Sadbhavana under the aegis of ‘Forever in Operations’ Division exclusively for girl children of Government Schools of Dras region. The team comprising 20 girls and 4 teachers were flagged off on 01 Aug 2015 by Commander, Dras Warriors. They visited Amritsar, Delhi, Jaipur, Agra (from 01 Aug 2015 to 15 Aug 2015).

Sainik Raksha Day was celebrated in HQ 57 Mtn Div by 657 EME Bn on 29 Aug 15. The limited families in the station made way to attend the event that included screening of a movie Komal, a film on child sexual abuse, panel discussion on ‘Dignity of Women and Care for Girl Child’. A Pledge was taken to keep up the dignity of women and work towards upliftment of Girl Child, followed by poster and banner competition on the theme ‘Nari Samman, Nari Shakti’. The event was concluded by Maj Gen PN Rao, SM, GOC 57 Mtn Div with his closing remarks wherein he appreciated the unit for its efforts.

FOREIGN AND INDIAN TOURISTS RESCUED BY ARMY PERSONNEL As a goodwill gesture, on 27th August 2015 Indian Army personnel near Leh executed a rescue operation and evacuated the victims of a road accident to a Military hospital at Nimu. The entourage of 14 tourists consisting of 8 Foreign nationals and 6 Indians were injured and trapped in a minibus in which they were travelling. The minibus toppled while moving from Sangam to Chilling due to a tyre burst.

DISASTER & FLOOD RELIEFINDIAN ARMY RESCUES 400 STRANDED TOURISTS FROM FLOOD-HIT LADAKH About 400 stranded tourists were evacuated by the Army from flood-hit areas of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir as several villages of the region were cut off from the main land. The Army units swiftly came to the rescue of the people and started restoring lines of communication on priority. Army established a relief camp in a village where food, medicines and other supplies were distributed.

ARMY ACTS AS SAVIOR IN NORTH GUJRAT AND BHUJAs the flood situation in Gujarat continued to be grim, Indian Army troops fanned out into affected areas. rescue teams evacuated 89 personnel to safer area from village Kuda located approximately 15 km west of Deesa and provided survival items such as food, drinking water and medicines to people stranded in their homes. The teams operating out of Tharad, rescued a total of 144 villagers from Khanpur and Vami located in close proximity. Teams have also redeployed to reach affected areas in Village Dharod in Kutch.

ARMY LAUNCHED FLOOD RELIEF OPERATION IN LOWER ASSAMMany villagers were displaced in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts as floods hit Lower Assam. Indian Army launched multiple columns in the flood hit districts and rescued more than 2500 villagers from inundated areas and provided relief in terms of food and medical assistance.

FLOOD RELIEF OPERATIONS BY KRIPAN DIVISIONKripan Division carried out flood relief operations in villages of Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal on 01 and 02 July 2015. The release of water from Teesta Barrage had resulted in breach in embankments of Teesta River. Approximately 1200 people from the villages of Basusuva South and Matiachar were affected by the floods. Two Task Forces comprising of eight teams were promptly employed to carry out evacuation of the stranded people, provide medical assistance to the injured and distribute relief material provided by the civil administration.

IN FOCUSRAKSHA MANTRI VISITS LADAKH REGION

Mathura based Strike 1 celebrated its Golden Jubilee on 19 Aug 2015. A Wreath laying ceremony was held at War Memorial Mathura to pay homage to the brave soldiers of Strike 1 who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. After which, ‘The Heritage’, Strike 1 Archive was inaugurated. Heritage is a museum where one can relive the history of this elite Corps, learn about the glorious past and pay homage to Brave Yodhas of Strike 1. Major attractions of Heritage are the soil brought from some of the main battle areas in the enemy territory and an interactive E-Archive. Thereafter, the venue shifted to Tarapore Hall where a Sainik Sammelan ceremony was held and the First Day Cover of Golden Jubilee was released by Lt Gen AK Sahni, UYSM, SM, VSM, Army Commander South Western Command. This ceremony was followed by felicitations and interaction with war Veterans, many of whom have taken part in Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971.

DESERT CORPS WAR MUSEUM AT JAISALMERA War Museum conceived and constructed by the Desert Corps was dedicated to the Nation by Lt Gen Ashok Singh, Army Commander Southern Command on 24 August 2015. The War Museum showcases the glorious history of the Indian Army and also displays war exhibits which include vehicles and equipment captured during the course of operations in the Deserts in 1965 and 1971. It has a Valour Wall engraved with the names of the PVC award winners, two large Information Display Halls, an Audio Visual Room, a well stocked souvenir shop and a cafeteria. A Hunter Air Craft of the IAF which destroyed the enemy tank columns is also displayed to signify the synergy between Army and Air Force which led to the victory.

The Raksha Mantri, Shri Manohar Parrikar arrived at Leh on 23 Aug 2015 on a one day visit to the Ladakh Region. He was accompanied by Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM,UYSM, AVSM,VSM, ADC, Chief of the Army Staff and was received by Army Commander Northern Command and GOC Fire & Fury Corps. On arrival at Leh, the Raksha Mantri interacted with the soldiers at the Rinchen auditorium after which he was briefed by the GOC, Fire & Fury Corps on the prevailing military situation and state of defence preparedness along the borders of Ladakh. The Raksha Mantri accompanied by the COAS and the Army Commander also visited the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research in Leh and were briefed on the ongoing projects by the institute.

Gen Dalbir Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM,VSM, ADC, COAS interacted with students of Srinagar School of Management College (SSM), J&K as part of ‘The National Integration Tour’, in New Delhi on 07 Aug 2015. The tour was aimed to give an exposure to the participants on technical courses and job opportunities available outside the State of J&K and was undertaken by 2 Rashtriya Rifles from 05 to 17 Aug 15. The team visited Rashtrapati Bhavan, IITs at Delhi & Indore, IIM Indore, MCTE & Infantry School among other institutes. The students also got an opportunity to attend the Flag Hoisting Ceremony & the Prime Ministers address at Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day.

GOLDEN JUBILEE OF CAPTURE OF PT 13620.In May 1965, Pakistan had increased hostilities and were deployed at Pt 13620 & adjacent features. 4 RAJPUT on 17 May 1965 as part of counter offensive action captured Pt 13620 but due to UN intervention it was vacated. In Aug 1965 Pakistan resorted to mass infiltration in J&K code named ‘Op Gibraltar’. 17 PUNJAB was again tasked to capture Pt 13620 and Operations commenced on 15 Aug 1965 & Pt 13620 was captured for the second time within a span of three months. This success bolstered the image of the Indian Army. To commemorate the Golden Jubilee of capture of Pt 13620 a solemn ceremony was held at Kargil War Memorial and wreath was laid by Commander, Kargil Sentinels along with other civil and military dignitaries.

LAUNCH OF AWPO PILOT PROJECT : JOB ORIENTED TRAINING PROGRAMME Army Welfare Placement Organisation (AWPO) under the aegis of AGs Branch / CW Dte, IHQ MoD (Army) launched a first of its kind initiative for agriculture based skilling for serving & retired JCOs /NCOs. This pilot project was conducted at the Hisar Military Station, with all administrative and infrastructure facilities being provided by 74 Armd Regt. The training commenced on 04 Aug 2015 and was formally launched by Cdr 39 Armd Bde, Brig Devinder Kumar, SM. The skilling capsule was run by IL&FS Skills Development Corporation for a duration of thirty days. On successful completion, the participants will become certified Agriculture Extension Service Providers. Once qualified, veterans are guaranteed employment under an arrangement between AWPO and Gram Unnati Foundation. The successful completion of this pilot project will pave way for conduct of similar courses Pan India in not only the agricultural sector but also in all other job oriented sectors.

INAUGURATION OF RENOVATED PAEDIATRIC WARD Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA inaugurated the Advanced Renovated Paediatric ward and child facilities at Base Hospital Delhi Cant on 14 Aug 2015. President AWWA met the admitted children and their mothers in the wards and enquired about the treatment facilities and well being. She also presented gifts and toys to the children. The toys presented were sponsored by multinational company ‘Mattel’ under their Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Apart from treatment facilities, a NICU ward for seriously ill cases is also there in the Paediatric MI Room.

VISIT TO PARISHRAM AWWAMrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA, visited Parishram AWWA on 20 Aug 2015. Parishram AWWA deals with manufacturing of low technology hospital clothing and other products such as school dresses. The President AWWA interacted with the Parishram AWWA team and was happy to note that it worked as a homogeneous unit with high work ethos and camaraderie. The President AWWA appreciated the efforts of Parishram AWWA in providing a win win situation for all the stakeholders. The working ladies are being paid well and as per their output. The quality products with competitive rate are being supplied timely to hospitals and schools. The President AWWA wished all the staff the very best and exhorted them to continue good work for a noble cause.

VISIT TO AWWA LUNCH PROJECTMrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA visited the AWWA Lunch Project on 20 Aug 2015. During the visit, the President AWWA was briefed on the AWWA Lunch quality control, hygiene aspects and methodology adopted from procurement of raw material to delivery point. The President AWWA then interacted with the working staff and conveyed her appreciation for the high standards being maintained. She met each one of the working ladies and presented them a token of appreciation. In a bid to automatise, the AWWA Lunch Project now has a dough kneading machine and an automatic chapati maker. The delicious lunch made is packed in extremely hygiene conditions using high quality packing material.

POOH-JALORI PASS : CYCLING EXPEDITIONA Team of Tripeak Brigade undertook a Cycling Expedition from 15th to 31st August 15 to cover a challenging route in Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti, Kullu and Mandi Districts. The Twelve member team commenced their expedition from Pooh and covered a distance of 700 Kms. The cyclists motivated the youth along their expedition route to join the Indian Army and also spread the message of “Swachh Bharat Abhyaan”

SOLO CLIMB TO SOUTH AMERICAS HIGHEST PEAK- MT ACONCAGUA Keeping the adventure alive, Army Adventure Wing added another feather to it’s cap when it encouraged Col Sarfraz Singh, CO 6 PARA (A hardcore mountaineer presently posted as Contingent Cdr of INDBATT IV in UN Msn MONUSCO) to climb a 7000 M tall peak, Mt Aconcagua in the Andes mountain ranges, Argentina. The officer displayed extraordinary mountaineering skills and stamina to summit a seven thousand meter peak on 17 Feb 2015 all by himself i.e without taking help of porters, guides or any other climbing team. It took him 14 days to successfully complete this expedition and in doing so he became the first Indian to climb Mt Aconcagua solo.

DESERT SAFARI RALLYA Desert Safari to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of 1965 Indo-Pak War was undertaken by Mathura based Strike 1 Corps under the aegis of Sapta Shakti Command from 16 to 30 August 2015. The Safari commenced from Varanasi, and traversed about 4000 Km through UP, Rajasthan, Punjab, J & K (Samba) and Haryana before terminating at New Delhi. The team also interacted with the youth enroute and showcased the unsung heroes of 1965 War to motivate them to join the Indian Army.

ASHA SCHOOL STUDENT BAGS GOLD AND SILVER MEDAL AT LOS ANGELES Laxmi Kumari of Indian Army Asha School Narangi Cantonment, has made all of us proud by winning a Gold Medal in Soft Ball and a silver medal in 50 m race in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, USA. Laxmi had joined the Asha School at the age of seven with Mild Mental Retardation and Spinal Disabilities. With her sheer grit, determination and the efforts of the school, she not only started normal physical activities, but also participated in various sports events.
