KARACHI: The civil and military leaderships reiterated on Monday their resolve to continue the operation in Karachitill elimination of the last terrorist and to take all measures to achieve the target. Rangers ere asked to continuetheir action against criminals as ell as their patrons and facilitators ithout yielding to any pressure.

This as the outcome of a high!level meeting held at the "overnor#s House to revie the la and order situationand progress in implementation of the $ational Action %lan.

The meeting as presided over &y %rime Minister $aa' (harif. According to informed sources* the chief minister assured the prime minister that special poers of Rangers ould&e e5tended for four months in accordance ith the la.

Mr (hah &riefed the meeting on measures &eing taken &y the provincial government to restore peace in Karachi andsaid that to improve the prosecution system* 67 additional anti!terrorism courts 0ATCs1 ere &eing set up and 877ne prosecutors recruited.

He urged the federal government to release special funds and provide advanced A%Cs and eapons to (indh police.He also sought access to $adra data.

The I" informed the meeting that police had arrested some suspects over attacks on Rangers and Military %olicepersonnel. He said that 8*99 cases ere &eing tried &y the ATCs. -ast month 99 cases ere decided and 67

accused ere convicted. The others ere ac/uitted.

The prime minister praised the Rangers and other la enforcement agencies* saying the situation had improved tosuch an e5tent that foreign investors ho used to invite local investors to )u&ai for talks ere no coming toKarachi for holding negotiations and signing agreements.

He said targets of the Karachi operation ere /uite clear: criminals ould not &e alloed to raise their head againand the operation ould continue till all its o&,ectives ere achieved.



He said the operation* hich as launched in 87;6 ith consensus of all parties* should have &een carried out sevento eight years ago in vie of the deteriorating la and order situation in Karachi.

ut* he regretted* no attention as given and as a result incidents of e5tortion* target killings and other crimes had

increased. Thesituation had improved in the city after the operation* he added.

The prime minister said there ould &e no compromise and no one ould &e alloed to distur& peace. Thegovernment ill keep a strict eye on the situation. The people and political parties should ,oin hands for the successof the operation and help the government <nd the <nanciers and facilitators of terrorists and take them to task.

He e5pressed displeasure over =as in the investigation and prosecution system* directing the authorities concernedto improve it and hold regular meetings of the provincial ape5 committee.

The meeting decided to e5pand the targeted operation to the interior of (indh to na& those terrorists ho had =ed

during the operation in Karachi. It stressed the need for installing advanced CCTB cameras and improving themonitoring system at all e5it and entry points to Karachi.

There as a consensus &eteenthe civil and military leaderships that the federal government contact the Interpol toarrest and &ring &ack the terrorists ho had escaped to foreign countries. The meeting decided to hold trials of high!pro<le cases in prisons. All institutions ill sit together and help the interior ministry formulate a coordinatedstrategy to eliminate the <nancial netork of terrorists.

The meeting directed the home department to take measures in coordination ith all security and intelligence



institutions and district administrations to e5pedite the process of scrutiny of cases and send them for trials inmilitary courts.

Interior Minister Chaudhry $isar raised the issue of e5tension in special poers for Rangers* terming it necessary forthe success of the ongoing operation.He said the people had endorsed the Karachi operation and all federalinstitutions* the (indh government and security institutions ould have to e5tend all possi&le cooperationforitssuccess.
