Financial Update & Treasurer’s Comments
March 2017
March pledge offerings were $96,797 bringing our 2017 total to $385,448 compared to $342,979 last year at this time. This
also brings us in line with our needed pledge offering budget of $377,504. We did not receive any non-pledged funds in March
and remain at $13,361, compared to $28,715 last year at this time.
Expenses continue to remain within budget for 2017, and we are hopeful that we will contain expenditures for the year.
Our operating budget shortfall for 2017 continues at $230,000, and we need non-pledged or special giving in that amount over
the next 9 months. This giving is sporadic by nature so we remain confident that we can attain another balanced budget this
year. The many ministries of First Presbyterian are accomplished through this budget which is really all about Building Faith,
Changing Lives and Sharing Christ.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support of our Endowment Fund both through your current contributions and your
future support via your estate planning. Our Legacy Society is off to a great start. We have just attained the $2,000,000 mile-
stone up from $1,400,000 a year ago!!!!
May 2017 First Presbyterian Church—Building Faith, Changing Lives, Sharing Christ!
NEWS May is a month that brings many celebrations. May is the traditional month to celebrate mothers, come Mother’s
Day. May is the month when we, as a nation, commemorate Memorial Day. May, in 2017, is also a time for
graduations.
This year we have the opportunity to celebrate Mother's Day while we also honor our 2017 high school graduates.
For Mother's Day, our youth will be leading our worship with Ryan Nelson, a graduating senior, delivering the
sermon. Graduation has been moved into May for 2017 by the school district, and May 14 is the Sunday prior to
graduation, the traditional Sunday to recognize our graduating seniors.
Scripture tells us in the 10 Commandments that we are to honor our fathers and mothers. As the youth lead
worship on Mother's Day, this commandment will certainly be honored.
Sunday, May 14th, will be a great celebration for all our families. We certainly are blessed with some great families,
and we celebrate the achievements of all our members as we celebrate the Sundays in May.
May 7 is our Sunday to celebrate communion at the 9 AM and 11 AM services. May 14 is Mother's Day with our
youth leading the service. May 21 we will have our regular services at 8 AM, 9 AM and 11 AM with an afternoon
concert featuring the Imani Children’s Choir. On May 28 we will celebrate Memorial Day. It is on this Sunday when
we return to two services, 8:30 AM and 10 AM.

NURSE’S NOTE
Here it is – Spring! I have been talking a lot about
walking lately and some people think exercise really
isn’t worth the effort!
Here are 5 ways walking can improve your life as well
as keeping the mind-body-
spiritual connection in tune.
Walking improves your mind and
stimulates brain chemicals that
may leave you more relaxed and
happier; walking combats chron-
ic disease and helps prevent or
manage existing problems; walk-
ing helps you manage your weight; walking boosts
your energy level and promotes better sleep giving you
more energy to do the things you enjoy. Remember to
enjoy all of God’s creation as you walk for your health!

Our Church Leadership Happy Birthday May!
Mission and Social Concerns
Dodgertown Elementary: Heroes Needed! Three years ago our church “adopted” the second grades at Dodgertown Elementary School. Our goal is to listen while chil-
dren struggle with reading. Reading for information by 4th grade is essential in predicting a
child’s success in life. Carol Smoyer has coordinated a “band of heroes” from our church to
work one on one with these young students.
Enrichment away from the classroom is rare as families cope with a myriad of situations - not
hard to imagine if you are even slightly locally aware.
BUT we need more heroes, especially men! Come be Superman for these little ones with
their pudgy fingers, curly eyelashes and curiosity about “just who are you?” Coax a smile
with “well done,” shake hands to acknowledge mastery. Make a teacher’s day by showing up
once a week or as often as you can. It really does takes a village! And we need math heroes
too.
Carol Smoyer’s email address is: clsmoyer@bellsouth. Her phone number is 567-0929.
From time to time we hope to tell you about our experiences with Dodgertown. The Presbyterian Women at Vero Pres re-
cently raised funds for 50 pairs of shoes for Dodgertown students! They saw that 30 children went to Payless and were fitted
then brought back 20 other pairs for those who couldn’t go. Have you hugged a Presbyterian Woman today? Surely God is in
this place.
Celebrating Many Years Together!
Elsie Mokoban, the Intervarsity Director at Indian River State College, continues to
reach out to students on 5 campuses. This year, she celebrated her 25th year with
Intervarsity and she hopes for many more. Students are giving their life to Jesus and
are being transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She had a delightful visit with
us on Sunday, April 23rd at both services. Her mission is helped by donations from
the Mission and Social Concerns Committee.

~The Imani Children’s Choir will be performing at the First Presbyterian
Church on May 21 at 4pm. The Imani Children’s Choir is an
international touring choir from Uganda, and they bring an incredible
concert experience wherever they go. Each choir member must go
through 2 years of training in order to become a member of the touring
group, and we are very fortunate to be hosting such an incredible
performance. A free-will offering will be taken during the concert, with
all proceeds going directly to the choir themselves.

SOS Youth Group
Our youth at First Presbyterian Church are so blessed by the support of all the congregation. It is seen in so many ways, such
as, supporting our budget through your tithing, donating items or your time to the rummage sale, cooking Sunday meals for the
youth, volunteering as youth chaperones or advisors just to name a few. On April 1st , John Barley and Noel Thompson
organized and facilitated the “Tim Cup Golf Classic” for the third year in a row. Through their hard work and the
participation of all of those who played in the golf tournament, our college-bound youth will have the opportunity to earn a 4
year scholarship to help ease the cost of their education. I know your generosity is appreciated and will be remembered as
these young adults begin their life of service to others. Thank you so very much!
Four of our middle school youth traveled to Cedarkirk Conference Center to participate in
the Central Florida Presbytery FEED Youth Retreat. Along with fun worship and fellowship
with other youth in the Central Florida Presbytery, we worked 50 man hours sorting and
folding donated clothes at Beth El Farmworkers Ministries! I was so proud of our youth for
their hard work and their amazing attitude. “Let your light shine before men in such a way
that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” Matt 5:16
We would like to thank Kari Palmer and Ashley Lombardo for providing Sunday night
dinners for our youth. We would also like to thank Charlie Hancock and Bonnie Nolan for
helping with SOS on Sunday and Wednesday nights.

Men’s F.O.C.U.S. & Fellowship
The May and final FPC Men's Fellowship FOCUS Luncheon of the 2016-17 season will be held next Friday, May 5, 2017 at
11:45 AM in McAfee Hall The program will feature an interesting presentation of the Florida Sheriff Youth Ranch program by
Debi Girard and Major Eric Flowers of the Indian River Sheriff Department. They serve broken, "at risk" children, mending
their lives and healing their hearts by providing a loving home, using a work, study, play, and pray philosophy. They receive
very little government funding as it is a faith-based organization who believes the children need to know there is a God who
loves them. Come out and hear about the good work of this wonderful organization.
As usual, Chef Gene Horton and his merry men will serve a sumptuous feast, still only $5.00, payable at the door. We do ask,
however, that you call the church office (772-562 9088) and let one of the lovely ladies know you are coming so that Gene will
know how many potatoes to put in the pot.. You may also visit the FPC website and check "I'm Coming". You can't get a
better deal anywhere in town! Be sure to bring a neighbor or friend.
The Men's Breakfast at 0730 on Tuesday mornings at Cannon's Restaurant will continue throughout the Summer. The food is
great, the programs are interesting, and the fellowship is warm and friendly. Come on out next Tuesday morning at 0730 and
enjoy the good food, excellent fellowship, and an interesting program. Bring a friend along.
Music & Arts
First Pres Orchestra - Senior Spotlight
Emily McCain is a senior violinist and the concertmaster for the Vero Beach High School
Orchestra. Along with devoting her time to music, she is an AP student, VBHS Scholar, a
competitor in the VBHS Mu Alpha Theta math team, a member of the National Honors Society, a
former athlete on the VBHS Swim Team, and a National Merit Finalist. This fall, Emily will be
attending the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami with a major in Music Education. She
wants to give special thanks to Matt Stott for teaching her for 7 years and pushing her to always be a
better musician, leader, and Christ-follower. Emily has also greatly appreciated her time in the First
Presbyterian Church Orchestra, as it has not only given her real-world performance and volunteer
experience, but it has also allowed her to make connections and to be encouraged by the massive
support the Vero Beach community gives to young musicians.
“Music Notes”
~It has been just over 6 months now that the orchestra has been with us, and what a difference they have made in every
way. While they are receiving excellent support and kindness and accolades from the congregation, it is important to know
what they have said about being here. It has been a general consensus that while the opportunity for further music making was
the initial draw, all of the students and adults alike keep coming back week after week because they have said this is one of the
most inviting and friendly places they have ever been! They feel so overwhelmed with love and gratitude that they look
forward to coming back week after week to what is for many of them their first church experience because of you the
congregation. This is certainly a living testimony to this environment and the parishioners for exemplifying all that is beautiful
and right.
~While the car show was rained out, we did have about 8 cars that came with “die-hard” enthusiasts. There was one
particular gentlemen whose name we will call Mr. Smith since we were unable to locate him to ask for permission to use his
name. Mr. Smith brought a beautiful vehicle and motorcycle that he had built himself, and which took 1st prize due to its
incredible beauty and obvious skill. While that was a very exciting time, what was made obvious is that Mr. Smith had recently
had a heart attack, and for those that came to observe the cars from the church, he was able to discuss this trial with them,
and to be affirmed and loved. I spoke with Mr. Smith as he was preparing to leave, and he stated that he had wondered why a
church would be hosting a car show. I told him it was because we are constantly seeking to engage our community through
any means possible, and that we want the entire community to know that we love and care about them. He replied to me that
he had enjoyed himself incredibly, and that this was a place of peace with very friendly people. I asked him to come back
anytime, and he said he would definitely be here for the Father’s Day make-up car show. If nothing else that was accomplished
that day, Mr. Smith had a place by which he could experience Christ’s love by telling his story about his heart attack, and having
truly compassionate and authentic people listen to him, and let him know they cared about him.
~The Galleries at First Pres are vamping up and gaining quite a bit of notoriety and community engagement! While this is
excellent, one particular story has had a great impact. One of our current artists Stephanie Lovallo who is displaying her
collection and paintings in the Chapel has had a very meaningful experience. While she has said that her spiritual life has had its
ups and downs, being a part of these Galleries, and being the artist responsible for reflecting a worship space in the chapel has
renewed her faith and spirituality. She has said that being here on this campus with so many wonderful people going about do-
ing work that is meaningful and impactful has been very contagious. She and her husband attended Easter services because of
being here, and they are being very influenced by the compassionate and thoughtful nature of this church.
Presbyterian Women
Presbyterian Women: Celebrate Your Blessings with us on May 3rd As Presbyterian Women, we are led by the Holy Spirit to give as we have been blessed. Again this year, we will be marking the
many blessings in our lives at the Birthday Offering Celebration to be held at the May 3rd Wednesday night dinner in McAfee
Hall. The Birthday Offering celebrates a tradition of mission-giving that dates back to 1922, when a group of women gathered
to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church. That year it was suggested that
each person donate a penny toward mission for each year of their life.
To date, the Birthday Offering has funded nearly 100 major projects that have made a difference in people’s lives. The three
projects chosen for 2017 are the First Hand Aid Rural Clinic Development Initiative in Cuba, the Family Justice Center Safe
Haven for Domestic Violence in South Carolina, and the Navajo Water Project in New Mexico. We hope you’ll join us at 5:00
pm on May 3rd as we break bread together and celebrate the gifts that God has so generously bestowed, so that we, in turn,
may share our bounty with the hurting and the disadvantaged. Kindly call the church office at 772-562-9088 to reserve. If
you’d like to help us set up, please come at 4:00 pm.
Art and Jean Budden—Donors of our Permanent Art Collection in E T Smith Lounge
On the walls of the E T Smith Lounge, there are three Seriographs: The Last Supper; The Procession; and Ecclesiastes (Eccl
3:1-8). A seriograph is a print of an original painting and, in itself, is very valuable. The original of the
Procession is displayed in the Vatican Museum Collection of Modern Religious Art. John August
Swanson is the artist and he is a world-renowned contemporary artist whose works include many
colorful depictions of stories from the Bible. Many of his works are on display in churches,
universities, and museums around the world. Three of them are in our Church! We owe many
thanks to Art and Jean Budden for donating these beautiful works of art! Their desire was to
celebrate the building of the Center for Christian Life. They wanted our children to enjoy seeing the
Bible stories in a beautiful art form. With the suggestion from Carole and Peter Coe, Curators for
The Galleries of First Pres, the seriographs were placed in E T Smith, where one could relax in a
comfortable chair and enjoy the seriographs. In my opinion, our E T Smith Lounge has been a meet-
ing place for our members to enjoy refreshments, share conversations, treasure the memories of
loved ones who have passed with their families, study Bible lessons, celebrate birthdays, and so much more. Now we can also
teach our children Bible stories through art as Jean and Art Budden have wished. We are so grateful that Bill and Robbie
Broeffle invited Jean and Art to visit Vero Beach years ago. In 1998, the Budden’s retired, became winter residents and
members of our church. The world of fine art was and is a major part of the Budden’s
lives, and their home in Petosky, Michigan has more of their favorite pieces. Their
daughter has enjoyed painting as an avocation.
Shown here is “The Procession”. “The Procession” took 14 months for the artist Mr.
Swanson to achieve which reflects a unique expression of inner joy and faith. He calls it
“the grand work of my life”. In his own words he says, “...the great procession is a
celebration of life and faith where the rich and poor march in unison; the strong carry the
weak, and the weak humble the proud. A child lifts high the banner for all to follow in
joy, in peace, in love. This is the reality, the spirit I want to make real in this work.”
Please take time to come and enjoy and rest in the beauty of the artist! Praise God and
His people!

fellowship and hospitality. Our committee helps with large funeral receptions, hosting receptions for concerts, guest choir
events, new member receptions and hosting the lunches for several seminars and workshops through the year, to name a few.
You need not be a full member of the committee; a willingness to help serve or host at these various events is all we need!
Please contact Dottie Baird through the church office to find out more!
A Note of Thanks
“Thank you” could never express what you all have meant to me during the past few months. I am forever grateful for all your
words of encouragement, blessings, cards, and help that have given me the strength I’ve needed to help me move on. You are
a wonderful church family and I am truly blessed to have such loving and caring support.
God’s Blessing to you all! - Ruth Yensan
Spotlight on “The Galleries at First Pres” by Ann Faunce I am excited to tell you about “The Galleries at First Pres!” There are four different areas of display: In the Mighell Chapel
there are displays of Russian icons and artifacts from the Ukranian collection of Stephanie Lavollo gathered worldwide over 50
years. In the lobby of the Center for Christian Life Building there are world famous sculptures by Kathy Ferrell, which were
previously presented at the Stringer Gallery and in NY. There are paintings from Barbara Glover from her travels to other
lands; one painting is of Mona Lisa’s home. In the Gietz Music Suite and Peirce Library there are the famous Highwaymen
paintings by Ray McLendon. How blessed we are to have these exhibits at our church!
Our members Carole and Peter Coe have been heading up this endeavor. They both feel so blessed to be a part of our
church! Carole says that she has been in many choirs and none have been as accepting, loving, and as passionate about doing
the Lord’s work. Jacob Craig says that Carole and Peter approached him after seeing the advertisement in the bulletin asking
for Curators for the new Galleries. And, according to Jacob they have been invaluable and instrumental in making certain that
this program is taking off with great success. “It would not have been possible without their efforts, and I am so grateful to
work with them in every single way.” The purpose is to show beautiful and reflective art work in a way that, through
intentional planning and careful presentation, creates an aesthetic experience, so that all of Indian River County and beyond
may benefit. The Mission: The Galleries at First Pres exist as a service to the community through the presentation of fine art
throughout its campus. As a support to the already outstanding art community of IRC, we seek to encourage local artists who
are both established and emerging to show their work in a variety of subjects and mediums. We are pleased to support all
types of 2-D art as well as sculpture and artifacts. And Carole and Peter would love to have any member who has interest in
helping to please talk to Jacob Craig. Psalm 122:1 “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the
Lord.’”

Praise God and
His people!

The Church Life Committee Could Use YOU
We are looking for folks who are eager to serve and help us ensure we put our “best foot forward” when it comes to
fellowship and hospitality.
Psalm 122:1 “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the
Lord.’”
We would also like to thank Charlie Harper and Bonnie Nolan for
helping with SOS on Sunday and Wednesday nights.
Upcoming Special Events:
Sunday, May 14-Graduation Sunday! We will celebrate Ryan Nelson and Elizabeth Tuite at both the 9am and 11am worship
services. Graduates, their families and the SOS Youth, are invited to breakfast in E.T. Smith following the 9 am service.

Music and Arts cont’d...

NURSE’S NOTE
Here it is – Spring! I have been talking a lot about
walking lately and some people think exercise really
isn’t worth the effort!
Here are 5 ways walking can improve your life as well
as keeping the mind-body-
spiritual connection in tune.
Walking improves your mind and
stimulates brain chemicals that
may leave you more relaxed and
happier; walking combats chron-
ic disease and helps prevent or
manage existing problems; walk-
ing helps you manage your weight; walking boosts
your energy level and promotes better sleep giving you
more energy to do the things you enjoy. Remember to
enjoy all of God’s creation as you walk for your health!

Preschool Graduation is Near!
