Merhaba,
Örne¤in Zorlu Grubu’nun günefl enerjisinden elektrik üreten
kumafl haz›rl›klar›na bafllamas›, kir, koku tutmayan kumafllar›n
üretilmesi çok önemli geliflmelerdir. Bunlar›n daha da artarak
devam etmesi en büyük temennimizdir.
Nano teknolojinin tekstil alan›nda daha fazla kullan›lmas›
sokmas› gerekiyor.
fiunu herkes kabul etmel id ir k i ; Türk iye ’n in gelece¤i
tekstildedir, tekstilin gelece¤i nano teknolojiye yap›lacak
yat›r›mlardad›r.
Sayg›lar›mla,
Hello;
The importance of Turkey in textile is undoubtedly accepted in a
global way. The rise of our country in textile sector is reaching
the peak each day. However, is this position sufficient? Of
course no...
Though our leadership is accepted in production, we have to
have product variability in order to compete with countries such
as China, Pakistan and India. And just here, nanotechnology is
coming forward.
It is a very positive sign that giant textile groups of Turkey are
directed towards nanotextiles and this is very good news for our
country.
For example, the preparations of Zorlu Tekstil to produce
fabrics generating electricity from solar energy, the production
of stain-repellent and odour-repellant fabrics are very important
developments. We wish these to continue.
The increasing use of nanotechnology in textile will complement
our country's importance and present position in the world
textile. We also believe that Turkey will achieve the world
leadership through nanotechnology.
Meanwhile, the government must support the companies
producing with nanotechnology. Everyone must accept that the
future of Turkey is in textile and the future of textile is in the
investments in nanotechnology.
Best Regards,

Sevgili Okurlar,
ediyor. Baharda pek çok yeni ürün bizi bekliyor. Dergilerin ilk
sayfalar›nda yer alan yeni ürünlere dair haberlere bak›nca, teknik
tekstil ürünlerinin art›k günlük yaflam›m›za tamamen girdi¤ini
görüyoruz. Teknik tekstiller art›k hayat›m›z›n heryerinde.
‹nsanlar›n
günlük hayatlar›n› kolaylaflt›rman›n yan›s›ra, bu ürünler bafll›calar›
inflaat, ziraat, t›p, hijyen, tafl›ma, ambalaj, jeotekstil, askeri, ev
Ekonomik durumla ilgili gelece¤e yönelik kurulan karamsar
senaryolara ra¤men, teknik tekstiller sektöründe büyüme
Tehlikeli
maddelere (kimyasal, biyolojik, radyasyon, vb.) karfl› korunma,
yang›ndan korunma gibi çeflitli risk faktörlerine karfl› korunma
talebi ve ihtiyac› art›k gündemde.

Dear Readers,
Spring and the coming summer months give signals even from
today. Many new products are waiting for us in spring. When we
look at the news about new products on the first pages of
magazines, we see that technical textiles have entered our
everyday life. Technical textiles are in everywhere in our lives.
Having the mission to improve the life-styles of people, they meet
us in various forms. We can see them as raw fibers or as in
nonwoven, knitted, woven and composite structures. While they
facilitate everyday lives of people, they serve various sectors among
which construction, agriculture, medical, hygiene, transport,
packaging, geotextile, military, home textile, clothing, personal
protection for security, environmental protection and sports are the
major ones. The car we are using, the house we are living contain
many technical textile components.
Growth is expected in technical textiles sector inspite of all the
pessimistic scenarios related for the future of economy. In the
industry, there is a great deal of efforts directed to the potential
products and applications. Research & Development and Product
& Development activities are the most forecoming ones. New
applications develop when innovative and creative ides combine
with these activities and added value is obtained. Life styles show
important changes with regard to the past and this change is going
on. Consequently, the demand in technical textiles is increasing with
new demands coming from everywhere. Also, security concerned
personal protection is also a very considerably important matter.
Demand and need for protection against risk factors such as
hazardous substances (chemical, biological, radiation, etc.),
protection against fires.
Best Regards….
Greeting the Spring

500 tons are spun and, approximately 200 tons are used as blan-
kets and the rest part to be used at manufacture of socks, tricots
and clothes are sent to domestic and foreign textile establish-
ments.” Arif Oztan said that they had informed Cevdet Y›lmaz,
Minister of State and Mehmet Simsek, Minister of Finance about
the subject and they had been really interested in this subject and
spoke as follows: “Usak textile sector provides an added value of
450 million dollars by recycling the waste such as cotton, wool
waste and plastic bottle to the economy. We, in the name of in-
dustrialists appreciate the efforts of anybody who has provided us
about the incentive of environment until that day and will provide
us in the future.”
It has become the new sector of the city
Ismail Karahan, Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
said they were preparing to send the samples produced from tex-
tile wastes and plastic bottles to the meeting of Council of Minis-
ters. Karaman , stating that the city’s structure based on industry
had been struggling with crisis since 1997, said “Our sector went
bankrupt together with Russia through ruble crisis. And then at the
crisis of 2001 30 thousand employees lost their jobs in Usak. The
income of the city dropped below 1.500 dollars and we were inc-
luded in the scope of Promotion Law, so we could struggle with
global crisis. But we look for a way out together with diminishing
the effect of promotion law. We don’t want our fate to be similar
with Denizli.”
Samples are on the way to Ankara
Karaman, stating that factories that produce blanket and fiber
had inclined to “loss of textile” together with capacity reduction
by half, recorded as follows: “We collect the losses of textile on
the nature and recycle them into fiber. These products are
receiving interest together with increase in environment conscious-
ness. We bring in zero value to the economy. We transform plas-
tic bottles into granule and make them fiber. We recycle junk of
car tires into material used at tartan courses, play gardens. There
is development from traditional textile to technological textile. We
rescue 15 tons of car tires from being burnt.” Karaman expressed
that they request for support for the projects of recycling and he
mentioned that they were ready to send the samples to Prime
Ministry and related Ministers.

Minister of State, Zafer Caglayan, stating that the subject of R&D
is a delicate field, said “R&D, innovation and design are full of my
life. I feel a thing about these projects. There is an overwhelming
interest from the business community, This encouraged me. You
produce a project, Under-secretariat of Foreign Trade will provide
financial support. It will be 3-4 times more than this. All is up to
you as the phrase goes as long as we deliver significant projects".
Ca¤layan stated that there is need for mentality revolution and
he continued:
Textile is locomotive
"Textile and apparel sector is the locomotive of Turkey. The pro-
jects started in the sector will contribute to the export. Which one
is better? Selling one kilogram of fabric for 1 dollar or for 50 dol-
lars by adding technology... That's why this meeting is important.

the yarn or not. Project was started in September and is expected
to take a year. Korteks R&D Manager Mutlu Sezen, informing
about the project, said: "We will coat polyester yarn with organic
materials. We will adapt the structure of solar panels into the
yarn. If the project works, we will produce thin and flexible, folding
fabric panels.
Covering with organic material
Sezen, indicating that initially they are going to check if the photo-
voltaic material can cover the yarn or not, said: " Photovoltaic fi-
bers and textiles to satisfy the electric requirement of mobile elec-
tronic devices have high added-value and advanced functions as
well as they are promising for the development of textile industry
and intelligent textile export. We will coat an organic material to
produce electric power over polyester yarn with nanotechnology.
We are trying to bring the same structure of solar films in yarn by
using solar energy."
Foldable any time
Sezen, indicating that they will be able to obtain any kinds of tex-
tile structure such as clothing, curtain, backpacks of photovoltaic
fiber, if the project is completed, said: "This fiber will be able to be
produced. Thus, there will be more flexible fields of use as compa-
red to solar films.
The fabric with thin structure will be bendable and it will convert
solar energy to electric power.
It can be used in communication
Mutlu Sezen, recording that the project will also make communi-
cation easy everywhere, said: “Photovoltaic textile studies have
started to be applied in the field of military. People, needing elec-
tric during some activities such as working, living or sport in places
far from electric sources, can produce it through the photovoltaic
fabric they carry with them. It can be used in operating electronic
devices for heating, cooling and lighting." Mutlu Sezen added that
the initial cost of the project is 137 thousand dollars.

At the "Tire Technology Expo" in Cologne from 15 to 17 February
2011, Oerlikon Saurer, Allma Product Line, has received the cove-
ted "Tire Technology Award for Innovation and Excellence 2011" in
the "Tire Industry Supplier of the Year" category. Oerlikon Saurer,
Allma Product Line, was awarded this prize for its groundbreaking
new development of the Allma CC4.
Allma CC4 – the energy-saving miracle
Energy costs are the greatest cost pool in the entire tire cord cab-
ling process. They account for 30 to 50 percent for plants with wri-
te-down requirements, and even for 40 to 80 percent for machi-
nery already depreciated. The energy-saving miracle Allma CC4 al-
lows for energy savings of up to 50 percent, depending on the yarn
count and spindle type. Thus tire cord manufacturers can benefit
from enormous, even revolutionary production cost savings. The All-
ma CC4 is another milestone in the energy efficiency programme
e-save of Oerlikon Textile, which has been successful for years now.
"With the new development Allma CC4, Oerlikon Saurer proves yet
again its innovative strength offering a sustainable and resource-sa-

Smoking sensitivity, which has become widespread recently in

world and among politicians. One of the recent examples has been
experienced in suits. Instant solution has come from creative
entrepreneurs, when the people smoking start to complain about
the smoke and smell remaining on them. Thanks to a centenary
family experience, Levon Kordonciyan, who has become such a
magician of tuxedo and suit making without measuring, has
managed to produce a tuxedo and suit not reeking of smoke.
Master Levon said, "There remains no smell on your clothes, no

fabrics are being washed, ironed and re-pressed again and again;
special solutions are used. Cigarette smoke, known as the most
pervasive one, cannot penetrate into the fabric."
Politicians show interest
Master Levo, stating that it appeals to vip customers, told that his
invention has resulted from the demands of members of the
parliament and businessmen. Kordonciyan, indicating that the
ones smoking in TGNA lobbies and cabins at luxurious cocktails,
are exposed to disturbed eyes due to the smell of smoke, said,
"There has come out demand in this direction. I have started to
work. I have discovered the fabric impermeable to smoke."
Kordonciyan, also sewing for Çankaya Palace is receiving orders in
considerable amounts from abroad as well. The family of Levon

such a clothing culture to Turkey, has been maintaining their
vocation for four generations. Today, this tradition is carried on by
Levon Kordonciyan, the grand children of Levon Usta.

Being a person coming from the tailoring industry, in which there
were apprenticeship and semiskilled rating those times as well as
getting training in France, Levon Kordonciyan has gone a big fast
step further. After having training and doing internship on tailoring
in France for five years, he turned back to Turkey and started to
sew elegant suits and tuxedos together with his son in Havuzlu
Han. Levon Usta's family is still working in the same workshop

stated that Damatevi's web site has been visited by over 15
thousand people and tuxedo renting site by 10 thousand different
visitors and these figures account for the number of customers.
Kordonciyan is mainly making tuxedo. Their prices are determined

The production of nonwovens appears to be booming and opens tofurther growth possibilities in different application markets (geotextile, filtration, automotive, etc). The challenge requires specifical solutionsfor using textile technologies proposed by manufacturers. This is thecontext in which Italian textile machinery companies can play a

Italy and University of Ulster from Ireland have become a partner
to this project supporter by TUBITAK as well.
The project, in which Assoc. Prof. Dr.Huseyin Selcuk and Assoc.
Prof. Dr.Fehiman Ciner from Environmental Engineering; Asst. Prof.
Dr. Sema Palamutçu from Textile Engineering and Prof. Dr. Ahmet
Hilmi Çon from the Department of Biology are working, has
proceeded to the last stage.
Daylight is enough for cleaning
Nano particles are applied to fabric swatches in laboratory. Fabric
swatches made dirty through some materials, especially with
black tea, have been kept under the sunlight for about four hours.
It is observed that the fabric has cleaned the stains on it thanks to
the sunlight.
Project coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huseyin Selcuk indicating that
the product ensuring self-cleaning of the fabric under sunlight is
going to contribute to the textile sector and bring innovation, said
"We intended to use nanotechnology used in various fields such as
medication, insulation, environment and refinement in textile
industry. We have obtained the feature of being antibacterial and
self-cleaning by covering the cotton fabric with nano particles. We
observed that the stained fabric is cleaning itself under sunlight
and so on. We are going to conclude this work six months later."
Aim is to prevent detergent
Our Asst. Prof. Dr. Sema Palamutçu, pointing out that one of their
aims is to prevent the damage of detergent to the nature,
continues:
"We have enabled the fabric to clean itself. Water expenses and
detergent losses can be eliminated and minimized in this way. It
will be considerably practicable and useful for textile products
using too much water and detergent. Subjecting the stain on the
fabric to sunlight is required for stain's disappearance. We tried
tea and some other stains as wel l . Stain disappears when
exposed to sunlight."

In 1998, based on its 10 year experience and around 70 slitting
and spooling l ines instal led in various industries, Calemard
presented the Taurus line to the ADL (Acquisition & Distribution
Layer) producers. Today, after having already delivered more than
60 spooling heads worldwide, Calemard has recently launched its
third generation, the Pegase II.
The Pegase II has been developed to slit and spool sensitive
nonwovens. The targets: to produce jumbo rolls and to guarantee
no stress, no tension, no elongation, no twist on the nonwovens
strips. Our spooling technology has been engineered to respond to
the ADL producers’ need to improve productivity, mainly for baby
diaper production lines, by producing jumbo spools at high speed
(up to 600 m/min). These jumbo spools hold
12 to 30 km of ADL to give roughly 10 times
running time of slit pancakes on a diaper line.
This third generation of Pegase uses state of the
art technical solutions: accurate web regulation
tension, very precise web guiding and strip
conveying, wide double shaft unwinder for up to
850 mm mother roll loading down time, and
various options for productivity improvement
(VPN liaison, production parameter acquisit ion, pneumatic
counter-cutter shaft…)
Another important advantage of this new Pegase generation is its
new ergonomic ul t rasonic spl ic ing unit . Developed by our
Decoup+ brand, the specialist in continuous ultrasonic cutting and
welding equipment, this two steps’ web splicing solution is a
proven and accurate technology to produce unequalled quality
joins, without any colour fading or burns. Our technology consists
in an ultrasonic cutting operation which splices two layers together
combined with an ultrasonic lamination which enables the splice
to recover almost the original characteristics of the web.
In the nonwovens field, Decoup+ also proposes a wide range of
ultrasonic units to be integrated onto existing lines to cut and seal
in continuous, and also, handy devices for manual operations.
To discover our spooling and splicing technologies, meet us on our
stand 2569 during the Index 2011.

Addressing the sustainability in diverse markets, the German
nonwovens manufacturer will offer visitors insights in the versatile
possibilities of applying nonwovens in sectors ranging from hygiene
and wipes, to automotive, filtration and construction, to home
textiles.
Sandler goes green – Bio Textile for the wipes market
Reducing the carbon footprint of its products throughout their life
cycle is a top priority for Sandler AG. In the market for wipes
substrates, its latest state-of-the-art spunlacing line enables the
company to achieve even lower basis weights at low energy usage
while the well-proven quality is maintained. Consequently, raw
material consumption and CO2 emissions resulting from energy
utilisation are being minimised. The lightweight wipes substrates
also decrease the amount of waste after use.
In 2008, Sandler AG launched its “Less is Best to Nature” project,
focussing on low basis weights in wipes applications in order to
reduce raw material consumption and waste. A new development
for the disposable wipes, market takes this project to higher levels.
Sandler’s wipes substrate, bio textile by Sandler , was developed
in cooperation with one of the company’s raw material suppliers.
I t i s composed of 100% v iscose f ib res , mak ing i t fu l l y
biodegradable. The product features excellent absorbency and
softness at low basis weights. Moreover, both the fibres utilised as
well as the nonwoven substrate itself are certified according to the
PEFC standard, which stands for a sustainable handling of wood
and products made of it. The fibres are of European origin, thus
minimizing the overall carbon emissions in transportation and
positively affecting the carbon footprint of the product. The
Sandler Bio Wipe substrate is also equipped with a unique hydro-
emboss ing des ign wi th des ign e lements i l lus t rat ing the
manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability.
Latest Sandler nonwovens for floor cloths feature reduced MD and
CD elongation for increased resilience. In dry wipe as well as wet
wipe applications or impregnated with cleaning waxes, these
spunlaced nonwovens take on even the most persistent staining.
Naturally, established Sandler qualities will also be presented:

Hygiene / Medical Applications
Softness, elasticity and care are the themes under which the
company will exhibit a broad range of nonwovens for hygiene and
medical applications. In this market, sustainabil ity and the
protection of the environment are also vital aspects in product
development.
In various stretch applications for diapers and other hygiene
products, utilised materials have to offer extensibility to ensure
optimal fit. They also have to be soft and feature excellent tensile
strength. At this year’s INDEX exhibition, Sandler AG will show a
new spunlaced nonwoven for these applications, e.g. for side
panels . The utter ly soft and l ight mater ial features a high
elongat ion at low force and a high CD tensi le strength at
maximum elongation. Also on display is a newly developed, very

Sandler is also offering high-quality nonwovens made of fibres with
special finishes, or a share of cotton. Products of the botanicals
product series are enhanced with aloe vera, camomile, vitamin E,
or silk proteins and thereby complement proven functionalities. A
new embossing design applied to thermobond materials offers
additional opportunities for differentiation.
On the medical side, Sandler offers all directionally elastic carrier
materials for wound dressings and nonwovens for other wound
care products feature excellent elasticity and allow the skin to
breath due to their air-permeability. Materials for face masks will
also be presented.
Design & Differentiation
Sandler provides a choice of different designs adapted for various
target groups in the hygiene market, for instance the established
Sandler White Lace® und Sandler Silver Lace® design applications
in the style of finest lace. For wipe applications Sandler will exhibit
a variety of printing and embossing motifs for applications in
cosmetics and baby care. For example a new embossing design
which resembles the structure of garments. With up to two colours
customised printing designs can be conceptualised increasing
product recognition and opening up possibilities for product
differentiation.

developments as well as established products for technical
applications:
Nonwoven absorbers contribute to lightweight construction in the
automobile, reducing fuel consumption and thereby preserving
valuable resources.
With their excellent heat insulation they contribute to the air
conditioning in the passenger compartment. Thereby, the need to
use the a i r -condi t ion ing system can be reduced and fue l
consumption lowered. In external applications like the engine
compartment, Sandler absorber nonwovens prevent the engine
and adjoining aggregates from cooling down too quickly. Thereby,
cold starts are lessened and fuel consumption as well as wear are
reduced.
Sandler synthetic pocket filter media contribute to reducing the life
cycle costs of the filter: from energy efficiency to disposal after
use. With their low average pressure drop they reduce energy
consumption during operation of the filtration plant. The utilisation
of finest fibres ensures high efficiency and dust holding capacity
and the integrated pre-filter, with which special product lines are
equipped, prolongs the lifetime of the filter even further. Latest
developments focus on retaining high efficiency throughout the
operating life, thus already meeting the requirements of future
testing standards. In this way, Sandler pocket filter media combine
excellent performance with energy efficiency and long operating
lives.
At this year’s INDEX exhibition, Sandler AG will present its broad
range of nonwoven mater ials for the automotive industry :
Absorbers for interior and exterior applications as carrier materials
for moulded parts which combine excellent mouldability and
acutance. Nonwovens for seat upholstery featuring high recovery
rate and air permeability ensure long-lasting seating comfort.
Furthermore, a range of materials applicable as cover nonwovens
and processing aids will be on display. In the filtration segment,
Sandler AG puts forward its wide range of filter nonwovens grade
G2 to H11 for various applications from heating, ventilation, air
conditioning, to automotive filtration, to synthetic vacuum cleaner
bags.
Nonwoven materials for construction will also be exhibited: From
façade renovation to the insulation of interior walls; from roof
construction to footfall sound insulation – nonwovens offer textile
alternatives for various applications in construction and technical
insulation.
Materials for home furnishings such as upholstered furniture,
mattresses or outdoor clothing will complete the product range.
Convince yourself. Sandler is looking forward to welcoming you at
booth 2431 in exhibition hall 2.

Tarih ise 24-26 May›s...
Frans›z Tekstil Makine ‹malatç›lar› Derne¤i Genel Sekreteri
Evelyne Cholet (UCMTF), "Teknik tekstil üreticilerinin ihtiyac›n›
ve onlar›n bu özel ihtiyaçlar›na hitap eden uygun çözümleri on-
lara sa¤laman›n öndemini an›l›yoruz. Bizim esas amac›m›z, yeni
maliyetle bunlar› üretmede onlara yard›mc› olmakt›r. Bu sebep-
le, üyelerimizi gelecek May›s ay›nda Frankfurt'ta Techtextil'e
kat›lmalar›n› destekliyoruz" dedi.
Frans›z tekstil makine üreticileri kendi uzman-
l ›klar›nda daima dünya liderleri. Stratejileri
özellikle müflterilerin ihtiyaçlar›na yönelik çö-
zümler sunmak ve onlar›n uzun vadede çözüm
ortaklar› olmakta. Bu strateji makine imalatç›-
lar›n›n gerçek anlamda içinde bulundu¤u özel-
likle nonwoven ve teknik tekstil sektörüne yö-
neliktir. Teknik tekstilleri için yeni pazarlar bu
flekilde aç›labiliyor.
Bu strateji sayesinde, Fransa özellikle çözgü
haz›rlama, nonwoven, iplik e¤irme ve apre makinelerinde a¤›r-
l›kl› olmak üzere 6. makine ihracatç›s›.
Neredeyse tamam› bütün dünyaya ihraç edilen toplam ciro 1
milyar Euro'nun (1.3 milyar $) üzerinde. Bu piyasalar karma ve
s›n›rl›.
Makine imalatç›lar›n›n kapal› kap›lar ard›nda teknoloji yenilikleri
“We understand the unique needs of the technical textiles produ-
cers and the importance of providing them tailored solutions to
address their specific requirements. Our main objectives are to
help them design new marketable products and produce them in
a safe and cost efficient way. That’s why we encourage our mem-
bers to attend Techtextil next May in Frankfurt” states Evelyne
Cholet, Secretary General of the French Association of Textile
Machinery Manufacturers (UCMTF).
French textile machinery manufacturers are often world leaders
on their specialties. Their strategy is to offer tailor made solutions
to solve customers’ needs and be their long term partners. This
strategy is particularly fitted to the nonwovens and
technical textiles sectors in which the machinery ma-
nufacturers are really integrated. This is how new
markets for the technical textiles can be opened.
Thanks to this strategy, France is the 6th machinery
exporter, particularly strong in weaving preparation,
nonwovens, spinning, and finishing machinery. The
total turnover is slightly over 1 billion Euros (1.3 billi-
on US$), nearly all of it being exported all over the
world.
These markets are complex and limited in size. They do not at-
tract the new and large machinery manufacturers from such coun-
tries as China.
Not to work on technology innovations behind the closed doors of
the machinery manufacturers’ laboratories but very closely with
the customers to understand their needs and offer them solutions
is particularly important for the technical textile applications
which require real partnerships to design the specific technologies
to produce new marketable end products.
Since last Techtextil in 2009, UCMTF has been very active promo-
ting energy savings and fighting to protect property rights.
The new machines can achieve energy savings through different
solutions: fine tuning the machine to fit exactly the energy profile
of the production process, finding new low energy processes for in-
dividual machines and optimizing the energy consumption of a

önceliklerimiz aras›nda ilk s›ray› al›r" diyor. UCMTF, global bir
profesyoneller a¤›yla yak›n iflbirli¤i içerisindedir.
Gelece¤in ortaklar›
Evelyne Cholet sözlerini flöyle sonland›rd›: "Ticari bir organizas-
yon olarak, müflterilerimize 'tek sat›fl noktas›' sunacak imalatç›-

bir çözüme kavuflmak istiyor. Y›llard›r bu e¤ilimin fark›nday›z.

Farkl› süreçler uygulan›r: Sert lifler için hallaçlama, taraklama, ip-

yarn etiketi alt›nda, temeli 5 ticari markaya (Cognetex, San’t
Andrea Novara, N. Schlumberger, Seydel, Thibeau) dayanan
whole production line. These approaches are not exclusive one
from the other, they can be combined. In many real world examp-
les, the energy savings are in the 30-40 % range, same or even
more for the water consumption in dyeing and finishing.
“Protecting our intellectual property rights is also one of our top
priorities” states Evelyne Cholet.
UCMTF works closely with a global network of professionals.
Partners for the future
Evelyne Cholet concludes “As a trade organization we can help
complementary manufacturers to offer our customers a “single
point of purchase”. More and more, the clients want to get a
complete solution, shop for complete lines or even complete
plants. We have understood this trend for several years and adap-
ted our offer.
On our website www.ucmtf.com we offer ourselves a single point
of entry to the French textile machinery. We welcome all interes-
ted parties to visit us ».

At this year’s Techtextil in Frankfurt Andritz Küsters and Andritz Per-fojet once again underline their worldwide renown as pioneers andleading suppliers of technologies for the technical textiles and nonwo-vens industries. At booth no. 3.0 B15, experts from both companieswill present the latest developments and innovative process solutions, from bonding to finishing. The technological expertise of Andritz Per-fojet has led to the spunjet technology for spunlaid nonwovens. Thispatented process entails hydroentanglement of continuous filamentsin-line, thus creating a new generation of nonwovens with superiorfabric properties as regards bulk, softness, drape, and tensile strength.
Andritz ’s customers nowhave the opportunity tocombine the spunjet tech-nology with a thermobon-ding calender by AndritzKüsters in one line. Depen-ding on the requirements ofthe final product, the pro-cess can apply either ther-mal bonding and/or hydro-entanglement. Another
highlight from the Andritz portfolio for technical textiles is the teXcals-roll calender, with a maximum line force of 400 N/mm. Specialapplications, such as parachute silk and extremely high-tech outdoorclothing, require a defined low air permeability which – if at all – canonly be obtained with multiple passages on standard calenders. TheteXcal s-roll with deflection control and adapted surface technologyproduces the best compaction results in just one passage. With theneXline wetlaid technology, Andritz also leads the way into this mar-ket segment for manufacturers of niche products made from specialfibers such as aramid, carbon, micro glass, and other high-tech fibers. The product portfolio ranges from individual retrofitting of an inclinedwire part, to the design, implementation, and commissioning ofcomplete wetlaid lines. Andritz offers tailor-made solutions all alongthe line in terms of highest productivity at optimum energy efficiency. The team of experts from Küsters and Perfojet would be pleased todiscuss the latest developments and services with you in Frankfurt atbooth 3.0 B15 from May 24 to 26, 2011.

1992 y›l›nda gerçeklefltirilen çevre ve geliflme üzerine BM Dünya
Konferans›'na göre, sürdürülebilir geliflme gelecek nesillerin ken-

günümüzün gereksinimlerini karfl›layabilmektir.
O zamandan beri, sürdürülebilirlik art›k çevre sorunlar› ile ilgili
meselelerin göz ard› edilmesi mümkün olmad›¤›ndan daha fazla
dikkat edilmesini gerektiren bir konudur.
Geliflme; büyüme, güçlenme, geniflleme, yay›lma anlam›na gelir;
sürdürülebilirlik buna bir s›n›r koymak, kontrolsüz verimlili¤i fren-

As provided by UN World Conference on environment and develop-
ment in 1992, “the sustainable development is that which satisties
the current needi needs without compromise the possibilities of the
future generation to satisfy theirs” a central topic for the planet’s
surviving. Since then, the sustainability is a subject, which calls for
always more attention as is no more possible to ignore the issues of
the environment challenge. Development means growth, streng-
then, enhancement, expansion; sustainable gives the idea to put a
limit, a brake to the productivity without control; is therefore a alre-
ady an actual contrast in the words which unavoidably reflects in a
concept which is difficult to be put in practical. Is not an easy task
to find a balance among production, environment, social welfare
and economic development. To walk in such direction we need to
check again the intersection among the three arguments tightly
connected (society, economy, environment) and partially modify
them.. For this, the manufacturers not only need creativity but also
new machines, new technologies, new processes which can reduce
consumptions and emissions, maybe even with a performance en-

hancement. Concerning the specific field of the continuous indigo
and other dyestuffs dyeing of denim fabric warps, Master unveiled
a path toward the eco – sustainability prior to others, thanks to
studies and experiments fulfilled on its pilot plant as well as the
continuous cooperation with its customers, the high ranking denim
manufacturers of the world. A creative idea, a happy basic intuiti-
on, experimentally checked, allowed to Master to fulfil a new re-
volutionary system for the indigo continuous dyeing called “Geni-
us”, whose notable advantages have been reconfirmed by the run-
ning industrial plants. Genius is an integrated dyeing module,
which can be used in one or more units on the continuous indigo

heat and long timing in
an inert environment.
Practically, to the clas-

system, common to all
the traditional machi-
nes, based essentially on three operative steps repeated several
times: yarn soaking with dyestuffs, squeezing to eliminate the ex-
cess in it and dyestuff’s oxidation by air passage of the dyed yarn,
Genius adds a fourth operative step, that of the leuco diffusion/fi-
xation, with heat, through long timing in inert environment, envi-
ronment in which are fulfilled the yarn immersion and squeezing
too. From this, was born Indigogenius® (pat.), a new continuous
slasher dyeing with indigo and other dyestuffs for denim fabric
warps, which uses a new ingenious technology, ecologic, economic
with two or more Genius modules. The classic dyeing machines
are normally fitted with n° 6.8 dyeing vats, equipped with a squ-
eezing group to eliminate the bath excess and with a rollers, in air,
for the dyestuff’s oxidation. The bath present in such vats re-circu-
late continuously to guarantee the concentration evenness, but
such movement causes the continuous Exchange of its superficial
part, which is in contact with air, being the vats open in the upper
part and therefore this causes the exidation and the following we-
akness of the reducing agents in it. That is, sodium hydrosulfite

and caustic soda. Are anyhow the several oxidation steps, which
are integral part of the dyeing cycle, and which practically consist
in an air passage of approximately 30÷40 meters of yarn soa-
ked with leuco among each of the 6÷8 dyeing vats and therefore
for several hundreds of meters total, which highly tend to weaken
the dye bath’s element which soaks the yarn itself. From this, the
need to continuously integratead new dyeing bath with hydrosul-
fite and caustic soda amounts, which have been destroyed during
the oxidations, so to keep their optimum and constant concentra-
tion in the bath for a better dyeing yield and to guarantee consis-
tent and constant results; such continuous addings cause a slight
economic cost, increase the bath salt contents with following dye-
ing problems and create a notable pollution of the final washing
waters. While, new Indigogenius®, uses only n° 2-3 Genius modu-
les, in which, soaking and squeezing, the bath recirculation and
the specific step of diffusion/fixation of the dyestuff into the yarn,
are fulfilled in a closed and inert environment, which avoid each
dyestuff’s oxidation. Such original operative condition allows, the-
refore, to eliminate all the classic system’s problems, toward
which, Indigogenius®, presents the advantage not only to drasti-
cally reduce the caustic soda and hydrosulfite consumptions but,
due to the better fixation of the dyestuff on the yarn, even a sen-
sible saving of the washing water and final fixing agent. Further-
more, as the dyeing vats and therefore of the air oxidation rollers

are reduced, the length of the drawn-in yarn are sensibly lower,
and this allows it to keep a better elasticity beside to the advan-
tage to a sensible lower waste at lot changes. The above mentio-
ned advantages facilitate also the treatment of the sewage water,
principally for the notable dyestuff reduction (for the higher fixati-
on) as well as that of the sodium sulfite. If we add that Indigoge-
nius® one, for peculiar construction and functional features is the
only which allows even to operate with low or high concentration
dyeing baths, at low or high temperature, with or without yarn’s
heating and therefore with the possibility to variate the dyeing re-
sults, to apply new exclusive proceedings as well as lower environ-
ment impact processes is possible to claim that is the machine
much evolved and highly in line with the existing and future ne-
ediness. It is possible, therefore, to state that , applying the new
ingenious indigo dyeing technology, in a closed circuit and in inert
environment, is really ecological, for:
• Chemicals consumption reduction;
• Washing waters consumption reduction;
• Electricity consumption reduction;
• Drastic reduction of sodium sulphite and dyestuff in;
• Better environment conditions due to the elimination of smells
and smokes;
and positively answers to the IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention
and Control), demands, anticipating the BAT (Best Available Tech-
niques) application. Indigogenius anticipates legislative impositi-
ons and limitations which, no doubt, will come and give to the
companies a long-time competitive advantage. Being “green” not
only gives benefits for the reputation and image of the Company,
but even economical savings which, in the long term will prove to
be higher than the investments and as the same time living a con-
tribute to the sustained development. Sure that any human acti-
vity creates an impact on the surrounding environment; but is a
duty of the entrepreneurs to use technologies and novelties, if not
to eliminate it, at least to make it milder. “Innovation”; is today a
key word, unfortunately several times abused, used in a not discri-
minated way even to something with no novelty at all, only to
catch the reader’s attention. Concerning the “Textile Ennoble-
ment” sector, the actual innovation is that which focuses on the
productive processes using new technologies, to reduce raw mate-
rials and energy consumptions, to reduce the emissions and to in-
crease the work safety, with the target of a notable improvement
of the environment problematics, which are well in line with the
sustainable development and the life quality. Indigogenius is alre-
ady the ecologic denim dyeing machine of the future.

1.Introduction
Carbon fibers have gained considerable commercial importance af-
ter its development period of 40 years and after its use in special
applications. Its use has increased rapidly . The demand and supply
have increased due to a decrease in
prices. Its performance and cost have
caused carbon to be substituent of
metals. Its use in the market has there-
fore increased. Carbon fiber has a mic-
ro graphite structure due to the collec-
tion of fibers of acrylics resin.
Carbon fibers can be classified as PAN
based, pitch-based and rayon based.
PAN-based carbon fiber has the widest
production and application area. In the
beginning of 1970’s, the production of
PAN-based, isotropic pitch-based carbon fi-
bers began in big scale. Through the ends of
1980’s, the producers have taken their pla-
ce in the market. Japan has kept its top pla-
ce among carbon fiber producers. Carbon fi-
ber is mainly used as a reinforcement ele-
ment or as a component in resin, ceramic
or metal matrix. It has very good mechanical
properties (tensile strength, modulus). The
other properties such as low density, thermal
resistance, chemical stability allow it to be
used in a large number of applications.
2. Fiber Structure
The structure of carbon fiber was identified
by X-ray and electron microscopy methods.
Unlike graphite, carbon fiber does not have a
three dimensional regular structure. Carbon fibers are materials

‹ngiliz ölçü birimi“psi” dir (pound of force, per square inch of cross-sectional are-a). Karbon lifler 34,8 milyon psi’den düflük gerilme kuvvetine sahipise “düflük modüllü” olarak s›n›fland›r›l›r. Di¤er s›n›fland›rmalarise artan gerilme modülüne göre “standart modüllü”, “yüksekmodüllü” ve “ultra yüksek modüllü”dür. Ultra yüksek modüllükarbon lifleri, 72,5–145,0 milyon psi aras›nda gerilme modülünesahiptir. Böylece, en güçlü karbon elyaf çelikten 5 kat daha güç-lüdür. with high strength and high rigidity and
they can be combined with a matrix
material such as an epoxy plastic and
the composite material can be formed.
The reasons why composite carbon fiber
is used in applications that require ligh-
tweight are its high strength, high rigidity
and low density (Table 1). Some speci-
alized carbon fibers are useful because
of their high conductivity and high ther-
mal performance. Carbon fibers are al-
so used in defense aircraft systems du-
e to their engineering properties (Table
2).
Carbon fibers are produced from PAN,
pitch and rayon precursors with high
temperature carbonization and grap-
hitization. PAN-based carbon fibers
are structurally the most dominant
ones and they are generally used in
satellite structures, space radiators,
etc.
Carbon fibers are produced from car-
bon atoms and they are long and thin
fibrous materials with diameters ran-
ging between 0.05-0.010. Carbon atoms are connected with each
other with microscopic crystals with almost parallel order along the
long axis of the fiber. A few thousand of carbon fibers become un-
believably strong. The twisting of a few thousand of carbon atoms
make the yarn and this yarn can be used alone or woven as a fab-
ric. Yarn or fabric can be connected with epoxy and they can be
shaped with casting to give shape to different composite materi-
als. Reinforcement carbon fibers are used in composite materials,
air and space vehicles, race car springs, sail columns and in appli-
cations requiring lightweight with high strength.
3. Classification of Carbon Fibers
Carbon fibers are classified according to tensile modulus of the fi-
bers. Tensile modulud is the tensile force a carbon fiber at a certa-
in diameter can withstand without breaking. The English unit is
“psi” (pound of force, per square inch of cross-sectional area). If

Hercules'in PAN bazl› AS–6modeli (4.14 Gpa) bu gruba bir örnektir.
carbon fibers have tensile strength less than 34,8 million psi, they
are classified as “low modulus”. The other classes are “standard
modulus”, “high modulus” and “ultra high modulus” depending on
increasing tensile modulus. Ultra high modulus carbon fibers have
tensile modulus ranging between 72,5-145,0 psi. Therefore, the
strongest carbon fiber is 5 times as strong as steel.
Classification of carbon fibers according to modulus:
1.Ultra high modulus type (UHM): These are the carbon fibers
with a modulus higher than 500 Gpa. The P120 type (820 Gpa)
of Union Carbide Company is an example for
this.
This fiber is mesophase-pitch based.
2. High modulus type (HM) : Its modulus ran-
ges between 300 - 500 Gpa and the ratio of
strength/modulus ranges between 5-7 l0 -3 .
M50 type PAN-based of Toray (500 Gpa) is
a good example for this group.
3. Medium modulus (IM): The modulus is be-
low 300 Gpa and the strength/modulus ratio
is approximately l0-2 . PAN-based M30 mo-
del (294 Gpa) of Toray can be shown as an
example.
4. Low modulus (LM) : Carbon fibers having a modulus below
100 Gpa belong to this group. These fibers that have isotropic
structure generally have low strength.
Carbon fibers have extremely high strength when compared with
other high-performance fibers. Strrength is increased even higher
with various methods.
PAN based carbon fiber :This is a type of carbon fiber produced
with PAN precursor. It has high strength and high elastic modu-
lus. It is mostly used in space and industry.
Pitch based carbon fiber : It is produced from carbonization of
pitch precursor. It has a wide range of properties ranging from
low elastic modulus to ultra high elastic modulus.

Mesophase-zift bazl› kar-bon lifi ifllemi üretilen karbon lifinin ›s›l iletkenli¤i bak›rdan üç katdaha fazlad›r. Pan bazl› ve zift bazl› karbon lifinin elektrik iletken-li¤i, çeflitli bilgisayar ürünlerinde statik elektri¤i yok etmek içinkullan›l›r. Bunlar erimezler ve ›s› ile yumuflamazlar. Roket düsele-ri ve uçak frenlerinde kullan›l›rlar. Oksijensiz s›cakl›kla mukave-metleri artar.
Rayon based carbon fiber : The fibers with low elastic modulus are
produced from rayon. The fibers are first heated above 400° C
and then carbonization is completed above 1000 0C.
4. Properties of Carbon Fibers
Composite materials from carbon fiber are 5 times as strong as
1020 steel and they are lightweight. They are 7 times as strong in
comparison with 6061 Aluminum, 2 times as rigid and 15 times
lighter.
Axial Structure
Single carbon fiber can be regarded as a long cylinder with a di-
ameter of 7Ìm. These single cylinders can be packed with crystals
in the form of tapes. The length and
strength of the crystallites determine
the modulus of tapes called as “rib-
bons”.
The axial view of PAN-based carbon
fiber is shown in Figure 4.
These crystallites in the from of ta-
pes contain layers in a thin range. All
these layers consist of carbon atoms arranged as Chicken-wire in
the form of the characteristic hexagonal structure of graphite. The
strong C-C bonds on this layer plane provide energy for high
strength and rigidity. The weak van-der-Waals bonds between the-
se layers provide the increase in weak breaking strength. The loss
of thermal energy and electrons of the protons provide advantage
for the weak bonds between the layer planes. The width of the
tapes, the number of graphite layers and the length of the tapes
are used in determination of the electrical and thermal characteris-
tics of carbon fiber. The thermal and electrical conductivity of a
graphite plane, having a big and good orientation, is high. The in-
creasing of the orientation of the micro structure may increase ten-
sile modulus, thermal and electrical conductivity of the filaments.
5. The Uses of Carbon Fiber
Producers develop composite materials not only for commercial
airplanes, but also for the military and helicopters. The composite
materials used are aimed to decrease the weight of the airplane.
Composites that will provide high flying performance are targeted.
The general end-uses of carbon fiber are below.

The reasons why carbon fibers are used in aerospace industry are
as follows:
1. When weight is considered, the specific strengths of carbon fi-
bers are nearly 7 times higher and their breaking strengths 5 times
higher than metals.
2. Their tendency to expand with heat is very low.
3. They have better fatigue resistance than steel
and aluminum.
4. They are more advantageous with regard to
performance/cost ratio.
Carbon fibers are inevitable materials form the
aerospace industry when suitable strength and ri-
gidity are given. The parts produced with carbon fi-
bers are 30% lighter than parts made of other
substituent metals.
