  • 1.0 INTRODUCTION

    This report presents the results of the 1986 exploration program on Noranda's Duffel Lake claim block in the Meen Lake-Dempster Lake Greenstone Belt west of Pickle Lake, Ontario.

    In August 1986, a cut grid was installed on the property and followed by geological mapping, HLEH and proton magnetometer surveys.

    This report deals with tlie geology of the 6 new claims added in March, 1986, and the Mag and HLEM surveys which cover most of the original 24-claim property and the 6 new claims. The geology on the original 24 claims is described in a previous report.

    A total of 18 additional claims were staked in October 1986 to cover electromagnetic and magnetic trends indicated on the newly released Ontario government airborne survey of the Meen Lake-Pickle Lake Belt.

    2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS

    The property is located approximately 48 kms west-southwest of the Town of Pickle Lake, Ontario and is accessible by float- or ski-equipped aircraft from Pickle Lake or Sioux Lookout.

    3.0 CLAIMS

    The Duffel Lake property now consists of 48 unpatented mining claims situated within the Patricia Mining Division on claim map G.2013, Duffel Lake. Claim numbers and recording dates are listed below:

  • A.O PREVIOUS WORK

    1983 - Noranda Exploration: 64 claims were staked to cover a small gold showing discovered in 1963 by Norex funded prospectors, and a large teardrop shaped aeromagnetic anomaly situated approx 1/4 mile northeast of the showing. Claim line geology and VLF and magnetic surveys indicated a central group of 24 claims to be of primary interest.

    1984 - Noranda Exploration: A pace and compass flagged grid was installed over the 24 claims of interest and followed by detailed geological mapping, magnetometer and VLF-EM surveys. The geophysical surveys indicated that the large aeromagnetic anomaly was caused by a tightly folded and fractured segment of oxide and sulphide facies iron formation. Although this major formation does not outcrop on the property, two smaller sulphide zones were found to the south of the main zone, both of which returned gold values ranging between trace and 0.03 opt. The main gold showing which was first discovered in 1963, was found to consist of a narrow (l.O 1 wide) quartz vein with up to 35% arsenopyrite, extending for 8-12" into the host pillow basalts. Assays from this zone yielded values up to 0.43 opt/2.0 1 .

    1985 - Noranda Exploration: In February, 1985, a small basal till sampling program was carried out over the deformed iron formation, the results of this survey showed sporadic but highly anomalous gold values associated with the iron formation over a strike length in excess of 1600m. Gold values of up to 572 ppb were obtained in the survey.

    1986 - Noranda Exploration: In August and September of 1986, a 39 km cut grid was installed on the property and followed up by detailed HLEM and proton magnetometer surveys. This cut grid also covered most of the 6 claims staked in March of 1986 at the eastern end of the property. These claims were mapped by A. Chong, cont-act geologist, in September. In October, 18 claims were added to tho property to cover conductive and magnetic horizons indicated by the OGS-funded airborne survey released October 22, 1986.

    5.O REGIONAL GEOLOGY

    The Duffel Lake property is situated along the southern edge of the Meen Lake - Pickle Lake Greenstone Belt and is underlain by metavolcanic and raetasedimentary rocks. On a regional scale, the belt is comprised of a high percentage of mafic volcanic flows and clastic sedimentary horizons with felsic volcanic rocks largely restricted to fairly narrow tuffaceous horizons. Numerous granitic stocks have been intruded along an east-trending axis through the center of the belt. One of these stocks is located immediately north of the Duffel property.

    At least four styles of gold mineralization have been identified within the belt:

  • The first is cross-cutting quartz veins from which most of the gold at the Pickle Crow and Central Patricia Mines was produced.

    The second is silicified sulphide zones within iron formations as found at Dome's Dona Lake deposit.

    The third style of gold mineralization may be found at St.Joe's newly discovered Golden Patricia property where gold is associated with a narrow but persistent quartz vein within a shear zone related to the greenstone-batholith contact along the northern edge of the belt.

    The fourth type of deposit occurs at Lac's Hasaga property where gold occurs in quartz-sericite-pyrite schist and may have an exhalative or epithermal style origin.

    6.0 PROPERTY GEOLOGY

    6.l LitholoRJcal Descriptions

    B2 - Mafic Volcanic FlowsThis unit crops out commonly over the northern half of the

    property. It is typically olive-green, chloritic, and weakly foliated. Stretched pillows with long to short axis ratios in the order of 5:1 to 10:1 were observed in several outcrops. Carbonate and pyrite are ubiquitous accessory minerals.

    F3g - GreywackeThis unit is exposed sporadically throughout the central

    portion of thp property. It is somewhat variable in nature ranging from a hornblende-rich tuffaceous greywacke in the north to a more biotite-rich rock along the southern edge. It is generally dark grey to pale grey, fine grained and well foliated. Scattered garnets were observed close to the southern contact with the F3Q quartzite.

    F3Q - SandstoneThis unit crops out frequently throughout the extreme

    southern edge of the property. It is typically fine grained and consists primarily of quartz grains with minor feldspar and sericite. Where observed in outcrops, it appears as a light brown, very well foliated rock and is normally very soft due to surface weathering.

    J5F - Feldspar Porphyry

    Small feldspar porphyry dykes were observed in at least 10 outcrops scattered across the property. These ranged from 15cm to Am in width but could not be traced very far along strike due to overburden conditions. They are typically grey, with small (3mra) white feldspar laths set in a siliceous grey matrix. Disseminated pyrite in amounts of

  • 6.2 Structure and Stratigraphy

    The geology of the Duffel Lake property appears to be fairly straight-forward, consisting of mafic volcanic flows in the north, mafic tuffaceous greywackes and greywackes through the central portion, and a sandy quartzite unit along the southern property boundary. This southernmost unit is very different in appearance from the greywackes and may be an eastern extension of the later Timiskaming Age Billet Lake conglomerate-arkose-sandstone unit which strikes southeast from the Obaskaba Lake Pluton towards the Duffel Lake property.

    Strikes generally range from 085 0 to 095 0 Azimuth with vertical o steep northerly dips. Tops are generally to the south throughout the belt but none could be determined with certainty on the claims. Along the northern edge of the property, some variation in strikes was noted, ranging from 090 0 to 105 0 in the west, and from 090 0 to 080 0 in the east. These variations appear to be caused by the intrusion of the Duffel Lake Stock.

    6.3 Mineralization

    Gold mineralization of the property was found to be associated with a number of different geological environments. The best gold showing is located at 8200E/9850N and consists of a 10-25cm quartz vein trending approx 045 0 Azimuth with up to 3555 arsenopyrite extending for 25cra into the basaltic wall rocks. The vein was observed intermittently in a series of old trenches over a strike length of 25m and carries gold values of up to 0.42 g/t over 2.0'.

    Numerous other gold values in the 0.005 to 0.06 opt range were returned from samples of pyritiferous feldspar porphyry dykes, narrow po,py,mag horizons within the tuffaceous greywackes, and small quartz stringer zones in both the basalts and greywackes.

    7.0 GEOPHYSICS

    A total of 34.8 km each of HLEH and mag were surveyed of the property. The work was carried out by D. Hancock and J. Maclsaac, both employees of Noranda Exploration.

    7 . l Instrumentation

    7.1.1 Magnetometer

    The MP-3 Magnetometer, manufactured by Scintrex Limited of Concord, Ontario, was utilized on this survey. mhe total field measurement is read with a resolution of 0.1 nts. . Diurnal variations were recorded by a base station recorder.

    7.1.1 Horizontal Loop EM System

    The HLEM equipment employed on this survey was the MaxMin II unit manufactured by Apex Parametrics of Toronto, Ontario. The survey parameters used were as follows:

    7 . 2 Discussion of Results

    7.2.1 Magnetometer Survey

    The magnetics of the property vary from -9081 to 11902 nts with background in the range of 1000 to 1250 nts. The dominant feature on the grid is a magnetic high trending east/west in the center of the grid running from L8800E to L11300E. This high is marked by a series of bulls-eye highs. Between L9200E and L10100, the zone is significantly broader, in the order of 250m, with very contorted magnetics. The amplitude and narrow width of the responses indicates they are quite shallow.

    Other magnetic highs of interest are indicated and are generally related to EM responses. Pyrite, pyrrhotite and magnetite have been found in the vicinity of the magnetic anomaly..

    A narrow magnetic anomaly trends easterly across the bottom of the grid between L9300E and L11300E and is open to the west. The source of this zone is disseminated pyrite, pyrrhotite and magnetite.

    Another easterly trending magnetic feature is located on the western part of the property. This zone is significant as it is related to an EM response. The center and shallowest part of the anomaly is located on L8100E.

    The basalts to the north of the central magnetic anomaly are essentially flat as are the greywackes that occupy the region between the central and the southern highs. Numerous interpreted possible faults are indicated.

    7.2.2 HLEM Survey

    Five EM anomalies have been defined and labeled A to E:

    Anomaly A runs from L7800E to L8300 at 010+50N. The strongest response is on L8100E at 101+60N where the conductance is 80S and the depth of the top of the sources is 15m.

    Anomalies B, C and D are quite complex as they can only be seen distinctly on the ends of the responses where there is some separation. Between L9200E and L10200E it is more probable that we are dealing with a number of EM conductors and not just three. These anomalies display very high conductances and are generally relatively shallow. Anomaly D has not been closed off.

  • Anomaly E extends from L10400E to L11100E and is centered at 9950N. The conductance is generally good, ranging from 15S to SOS. The best response to test would be on L10600E or L10700E.

    8.0 CONCLUSIONS

    The widespread distribution of low gold values and the presence of one high grade showing, while not of economic interest in themselves, do indicate that a gold-bearing hydrothermal system was active in the area and was precipitating that in gold in structurally and chemically controlled traps.

    Past exploration and production in this belt has shown that structurally deformed iron formations constitute the main sites of gold precipitation within these hydrothermal cells. With this in mind, the tightly folded and fractured iron formation outlined geophysically on the Duffel Lake property is a prime exploration target.

    The short basal till sampling program formation in 1985 indicated highly anomalous of up to 570 ppb over a strike length of 1600m. anomalous values in the -250 mesh, clay indicating that gold mineralization is tied up rather than occurring in it; coarser free state

    The high conductivities of the EM conductors found within the presumed iron formation almost certainly indicate the presence of major sulphide zones.

    In summary, the Duffel for hosting a gold deposit of tested by a substantial diamond

    has excellent potential and grade, and should be as soon as possible.

    9.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

    In light of the discovery of three new iron formation associated gold deposits within the Pickle Lake belt in the past three years, the Duffel Lake property appears to have considerable potential for hosting a gold deposit of economic size and grade. It is therefore recommended that a 13-hole diamond drill program be carried out on the property to test the deformed iron formation for gold mineralization over a strike length of 2300m.

    Six of these holes totaling 775m are considered essential to test the central offset section of the zone between lines 9300E and 10200E, while the remainder would be set up to test the less deformed eastern and western strike extensions.
