Nordic Light design, manufacture and market a complete range of high-

performance, energy-efficient lighting fixtures. Our headquarter is located in

Skellefteå, Sweden. Our own factories, located in China, deliver cost-effective

production for the procurement and worldwide distribution of our products.

Why Nordic Lights products?

Our products have the discrete appearance of Scandinavian design

to blend in to the shop ceilings. Advanced computerized software

is used for product development and a 3D rapid-prototype print-

er allows fast verification even of PDM soft type polymers. All our

products go through a highly developed burn-in testing procedure,

which limits failure at the end-users. Our unique development of

electronics ensures the functionality of fixtures in their intended en-

vironments. All products also go through Nordic Light’s in-house

EMC characteristics pre-testing of components, both separate and

installed in fixtures.

We always work with fully-equipped professional subcontractors.

With global logistic centers and sub-centers we shorten our lead

times, which are normally very long in the electronic semi-conduc-

tors industry.

Our three paint plants adhere to the latest EU environmental restric-

tions, which ensures a clean pre-treatment process. Good pack aging

ensures that our products are well protected, which limits damage

during transit and environmental impact. National and international

third party certificates verify production and saftey of the products.

Color scheme for lighting fixtures

Most Nordic Light fixtures are available in the three standard colors

White, Black and Grey. Our European produced powder coat paint-

ing lines applied in Nordic Light factories, provide the most modern

and environmental friendly techniques while achieving the highest

possible quality and capacity. Special colors and treatments for larg-

er volumes offered on request.

Support Frames

The principal rule is that the sound absorbents should not be over-

loaded. Extra loads should not be applied to the acoustic ceiling but

should be taken by the framework structure. For down lights placed

in suspended ceiling with weights exceeding 0,3 kg, we recommend

use of a support frame, in accordance with recommendation from

supplier of ceiling system and local regulations.

Product Guarantees

Nordic Light´s HID luminaires and control gears are covered by our

guarantee at 2+2 years and LED luminaires have a 5 year guarantee.

For further information see our current standard warranty terms and

condition for the product in question.

Products more than 4 years can be repaired after quotation if rel-

evant components still available, for further information contact our

aftersales department.

Reflector and lenses

Nordic Light has developed a snap-in system for easy lamp change.

It also permits quick change of the reflector beam spreads by ex-

changing the reflector. To distinguish the different beam spreads

there’s a marking of (S, M or F) inside the reflectors. The reflector

angles vary relating to the application. For the correct angle, please

consult applicable data sheet.

Glare around lenses and filters

A clear front glass eliminates 4 % of the light entering and 4 % of

the light leaving a lens. To eliminate glare it is possible to modify the

glass surface so that it scatters the light beams, but this usually also

leads to spreading the light across a larger area.

Screen print on lenses also results in a similar glare control,

however it results in lower illumination values.

Honeycomb filters are very effective in eliminating glare, but are

usually too efficient. Nordic Light’s standard honeycomb filters re-

move only minimum light flow, especially for narrow and medium

beam applications.

Dicroic filters are available for colors, heatsink, Kelvin-changes and

so on, but must be used with care since light beams will be offset to

achieve target but will increase heat emission accordingly.

Flaps or barn doors are not recommended for wide-beam reflectors,

but will provide a stage look.

Re-position spot lighting. Disturbing glare usually results from faulty

positioning of spotlights. Wide beam reflectors give a dazzling effect,

especially if used for applications other than wall washing.

What we do today will affect our society in the future, particularly

when it comes to the environment. Our aim is to reduce our envi-

ronmental impact through continual improvements, making Nordic

Light a part of the push towards sustainable development.

Nordic Light follows all legal requirements and all of our products

have their own documentation drawn up in accordance with the

“Environmental Declaration for Electrical Products, Version 05.”

Nordic Light supplies lighting to many large companies and prides

itself on meeting these companies’ very high environmental de-

mands.

Nordic Light’s products are continually adapted to suit new and

changing environmental requirements, such as the RoHS Directive

(Restriction of Hazardous Substances) and the new REACH Direc-

tive (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), which

is being developed. The company is a member of the EL-Kretsen

recycling programme and works in line with the WEEE Directive

(Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

Filters

Some of Nordic Light Fixtures can be equipped with filter accesso-

ries. color filters to enhance and create attractive lighting are offered

in Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Cyan and Orange. Also available are

filters for special features such as UV filter, reducing UV radiation,

Anti-heat for reducing radiated heat, Filters for correction of color

temperature and Honey Comb filter for glare reduction.

The optical system for LED luminaires is optimized by using indi-

vidual lenses in front of each LED. The lenses are combined in a

lens module, which can be exchanged between spot, medium and

flood. To distinguish the different beam spreads there’s a marking of

(S, M or F) on the side of the lens module.

3-Circuit Adapter. New version, rotatable 360°

The adapter is factory installed on the track fixtures. It is used to

connect the fixture to the NLP 3-circuit track system. The adapter

also suits the majority of other 3-circuit track systems. Check with

Nordic Light. Track adapter is not sold separately.

Installation:

1. Push the adapter into the track

2. Turn the fixing knob clockwise

3. Select the desired phase on the circuit selector switch.

To remove the adapter from the track reverse the installation steps.

Suspension Parts

Suspending a track can be done in two ways with wire or rod. Use

047-180 or 047-181 for this type of suspension.

Wire: Thread the wire through the hole in the track clip and band it

back up through the wire lock. Secure the wire with the screws.

Rod: Thread the rod into the 047-181, the rod should have M6

threads. Screw: 047-76 or 047-93 can be used to fasten the track

directly into the framework with a screw.

To stabilize track on wire from tilting, use rod for wire suspension

track system to fixate the track 047-283.

Maximum distance allowed between each fastening point

is 2 m. The maximum load on the track is 10 kg.

For 1m track the maximum load is thus 10 kg.

The tracks have knockout holes on the top side. These can be

used for direct mounting into the ceiling with screws.

VIS

VIS is a visual user guidance for maintenace. VIS can detect a number

of different problems like electrical short cuts, high temperature, faulty

light sources etc. VIS is possible using our NLP GIII ballast with integrated

MCU. The MCU monitors the fixture and can send error signals to a LED

on the ballast. The signal is carried through an optical fibre to a Lens on

the chassis of the fixture or the ballast housing. The signal is displayed as a

number of red flashes which indicates different errors. The error signals are

indicated in 30 second intervals and 1 second between each flash.

Apart from the error signals VIS also displays a single steady signal when

the fixture tries to ignite the light source. VIS is available on some of our

newest products. If the product has VIS it is indicated by the VIS logotype

in the product datasheet.

Power Generation III – with I Micro-processor control

The Power Generation III optimizes user friendliness via proprietary

LED failure identification system known as the Visual Identification

System (VIS).

Power Generation IV – L-Link

L-Link adds 2-way communication between base and fixture. This

communication operates via our proprietary website solution and

requires no extra wires installed in track or to down lights. Fixtures

can be dimmed etc.

Power Generation V

GEN V is designed in order to meet customer demand in effi-

ciency, enhanced stand-alone mode and new regulations coming

on standby power consumption. Efficiency gain is accomplished

by new switch mode topology reducing energy stress on active

switch mode parts. The GEN V is design to meet the second stage

requirements in standby regulations.

Lighting is complex. There are lot of things we need to know when working with

lights. How the electronics in the fixtures is working as well as lamp life definitions.

Guidelines and certificate needed for different use in different regions. All together

helps us to keep a high safety and quality level.

Spreading angle from reflectors

Shown angles are measured in darkroom and correspond to the

international Elumdat standard requiring 50% of light flow to be

within the indicated angle. The standard does not specify where

the remaining 50 % of light flow outside the stated angle must be

distributed, making it difficult to compare the results with other

suppliers. Observe straylight not defined.

Electronic prognostics/ Reliability ”bathtub” curve

Bathtub Curve Showing Failure Rate with Time, along with Re-

maining Useful Life (RUL) Period. Failure probability for a device

typically follows a bathtub curve, with three distinct regions; 1) In-

fant Mortality (Burn-In) Region. Initial higher probability of failures,

Efficacy and efficiency in LED luminaires

The efficacy of a light source or a luminaire tells us how

well it transforms electric energy into light. It is the ratio

of luminous flux (measured in lumens, lm) to electric

power (measured in watts, W).

Efficiency tells us how much of the energy that is con-

served in the desired form as it passes through a stage in

the luminaire. Consider two examples that will occur in an

LED luminaire.

• Electric energy is transformed from mains voltage AC

to low voltage DC. The efficiency of the AC-DC conver-

ter is the ratio of output power to input power.

• Light passes through a lens. The efficiency of the lens

is the ratio of luminous flux that exits the lens to the

flux that enters.

When comparing the efficacies of two luminaires there is

a question that needs to be asked:

Are both numbers taken on a system level, and under

actual working conditions?

When talking about the efficacy of LED lighting, it is often

the efficacy of the LED itself that is mentioned. When

placing the LED in a luminaire that can be powered from

mains and direct the light in a desired pattern two sources

of loss are introduced.

• Loss in power conversion. Efficiency of the AC-DC

converter is typically in the range of 85-92%.

• Loss in secondary optics. An LED is always used with

some kind of additional optics. The simplest form is a

clear glass that protects the LED without affecting the

light pattern, but it can also be lenses or reflectors.

As the solutions can be very different efficiency will

also differ, values of 75-95% can be expected.

The efficacy of the LED given by the manufacturer is mea-

sured at a certain temperature, often +25°C. As there is a

strong dependency between temperature and efficacy of an

LED, efficacy needs to be re-rated for the actual tempe-

rature in the application. An LED rated at 100 lm/W at

+25°C may have an efficacy of 90-92 lm/W when mo u n t ed

in a luminaire where temperature reaches +75°C.

LED lifetime

LED manufacturers provide data for the expected lifetime

of their products under different operating conditions.

The two parameters that affect the lifetime the most are

temperature of the LED and current through the LED.

Temperature also has an impact on the color consistency

of the LED, as operation at high temperatures and may

cause the color point of the LED to drift over time. The

design lifetime for the Nordic Light range of LED lumi-

naries is 50000h minimum. This means that thermal

and electrical designs of the luminaires meet LED

manufacturer requirements for a lifetime of min 50000h.

Everyone has an idea of what light is. We would never spend a day without it

and can use it to help us through the day. But not many of us have knowledge

of the characteristics of light or ability to use lighting to create the perfect

atmosphere in a room. This is an introduction to the subject.

01. A brief introduction

Even in our day and age, the old maxim “seeing is believing” has some merit. It is said that 80 % of our decisions

are based on what we see. Seeing is interplay between the eye, the object viewed and light. The latter decides

how we perceive the object in view.

Lighting controls the visual impression. It is a bold, but true, statement. So, in order to achieve a desired atmos-

phere, knowing how to use lights and lighting is alpha and omega. Even with small means, the effect can be great

– remember, it only takes a flashlight to create a monster.

light. Light – not only for exposure

Light can make an exhibition or a shop more competitive and attrac-

tive, but it is also a workplace where staff and visitors should feel at

home. We know that our sight grows weaker with advancing age. A

60-year-old requires a lot more light than a 20-year-old in order to

experience the same brightness but is at the same time more sensi-

tive to sharp light, which is why properly placed sources of light are

of an outmost importance.

Energy effectiveness

Energy effectiveness is increasingly important in all lighting deci-

sions, both for economic reasons and for sustainable development.

With current technology, it is possible to make good lighting choices

for the object or surface than shall be exposed as well as for the

well-being of our planet. Ordinary light bulbs produce 95 % heat

and only 5 % light and often require additional cooling units, which

make them quite ineffective when it comes to energy use. There

are many options today that allow a more energy effective lighting

solution.

Know your lights

We have already stated the importance of how light falls on an ex-

posed object. Furthermore, we need to know how our choice of light-

ing interacts with the object when it comes to color representation. A

good example is lights in the grocery section at the supermarket. It

is important that their lighting enhances the red color of the tomato,

for example, to make it appealing to the customer.

Other ingredients such as colors of the lights, dazzle degree and

brightness are also factors important to the atmosphere and the ex-

posed object. An exclusive innovative exhibition stand may be made

dull by a poor choice of lighting, such as single-color fluorescent

lamps.

Quality, not quantity

Plenty of light does not equal good light. A large floodlight provides

ample light and is the right choice for late night Champions League

matches at Camp Nou, but would be a disastrous choice for most

exhibition stands. Instead, narrow beam spotlights can be used to lift

products, play down surroundings and catch our attention through

interaction between dark and light sections.

What is light?

When we delve into the question of how to describe light, we quickly understand the need for widespread defini-

tions that help us summarize and describe the properties of light. Below are short descriptions of five commonly

used terms and a short introduction to the constituent parts of light.

Lumen per Watt (lm/w)

This is a property of light that more and more people are aware of

when choosing which type of light source to use. It measures how

effectively a lamp uses the supplied energy (watt). An effective light

source will turn the supplied energy to light, while a more ineffective

one will turn it into heat.

Candela (cd)

Candela is the measurement of light brightness in a certain direc-

tion. Knowledge of the Candela of a light source allows us to cal-

culate how much light will reach a specific surface. The luminous

intensity of a light source decreases by a factor that is the square

of the distance.

Light is electromagnetic radiation

Visible light is in the wavelength 400 – 780 nm, where one nanom-

eter (nm) represents one billionth of a meter. In this short interval

we have the entire spectrum of colors. If the wavelength exceeds

780 nm, visible light turns in to heat radiation, infrared light. If light

has shorter wavelength than 400 nm, it is ultraviolet radiation, which

may be harmful.

If we continue to shorten wavelengths, we get x-rays, gamma rays

and cosmic radiation. If we increase wavelengths past infrared light,

we get the wavelengths used for radar surveillance, radio and TV.

Color temperature K = Kelvin

Color temperature determines the character of light and also how il-

luminated colors are emphasized. If the color temperature is low, we

perceive the light as a warm glowing light, with a red coloring. Higher

color temperature gives us colder light, which explains why fluores-

cent lamps, with high color temperature, has a light that we perceive

as cold whereas standard light bulbs are perceived as warmer.

Color rendering (Ra)

To measure the ability of the source of light to render surrounding

colors and our product exposures, rendering average (Ra) is used.

On a scale from 0 to 100, a rendering average of 100 represents

perfect color rendering and a zero represents a light source that

cannot render anything but grey tones. A Ra of at least 80 is recom-

mended for environments frequented daily by humans.

Lux = Luminous intensity

The luminous intensity is the most commonly used measurement

for light and part of the reason is that it easy to quantify. Lux can

be written as lumen per square meter, and helps explain how lumi-

nous flux of a light source hits a specific surface. For indoor work,

a luminous intensity of 500 up to a 1000 lux is common. In our

homes, the intensity is often around 200 lux. These numbers pale

in comparison to the luminous intensity on a sunny day, which can

exceed 100 000 lux!

The toolsHere is a presentation of the light sources available on the market, their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

Incandenscent light bulbsTraditional light bulbs have always been good for achieving a good rating on the color rendering index (RA), but are now making way for a new generation of energy-efficient light sources. Why? Because only 3% of the energy they consume becomes light – the rest becomes heat radiation.~10 lm/W, color Rendering Index, Ra 100.

Mains voltage halogenUsed mainly in home lighting. Only 6-7% of energy consumed becomes light. Approx. 10% less system efficiency than low voltage halogen bulbs, mainly due to a larger burner arrangementNo gearbox required, ~18 lm/W, Ra 95-98.

Low voltage halogen lampsWidely used in exhibition and shop lighting during the 1990s. Good color rendering, but consume too much energy to be suitable for the modern shop lighting of today. Lamp lifespan is also too short. Require a gearbox. Only 6-7% of energy consumed becomes light, ~20 lm/W @12 volts, Ra 100.

Compact flourescent lamps (CFL)Fluorescent lamps are good for ambient lighting but are not the ideal choice for showcases. Optical difficulties in controlling light flow. Require a gearbox. Approx. 20% of energy consumed becomes light, ~55-60 lm/W, Ra 80+.

Discharge lamps (HID) Single-ended, double-ended or as PAR lamps. Currently the most widely used light sources in western exhibition and shop lighting. Double-ended types usually have a longer lifespan, but dif-ficult to design narrow beam spread reflectors. Approx. 25% of energy consumed becomes light. Require electronic gearbox, ~90 lm/W, Ra 80+ up to 90+.

Linear flourescent lampsTypes: Previously, T8. Nowadays, T5 and others. Linear fluorescent lamps are good for ambient lighting but are not the ideal choice for showcases. Optical difficulties in controlling light flow T5 requires an electronic gearbox. Approx. 25% of energy consumed becomes light, ~90-100 lm/W (lower for T8), Ra 80 >90.

”PAR” HID-lampsWidely used in North America, but have a limited lifespan due to their design. Difficult to use for accent lighting applications because of inherent optical limitations. Approx. 15-20% of energy consumed becomes light due to the optical design of the reflector set. Pros & cons: less expensive light fixture, more expensive lamps.

Light-emitting diode (LED) LED is a semiconductor light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are increas-ingly also used for lighting. LED is good alternative for some applications. Electronic gear is required. 15-20% of energy consumed becomes light. 20-90 lm/W (3000K), Ra 80+.

Armlights for exhibitions and foldable display systemsArm lights are suitable for use in temporary installations or when ceiling height does not allow for other types of lighting. Can be mounted on permanent wall sections or on portable display systems.

Tracksystems to carry lightingTracks allow the user to connect several lights to one-circuit, three-circuit or low voltage tracks. Tracks can be used wherever needed for accent and ambient lighting. Surface mounted, recessed or sus-pended applications. Voltage may differ from country to country.

SpotlightsSpotlights are a flexible and efficient way of focusing light where you need it most. Spotlights draw atten-tion to your message and highlight your products. Keeping accents from hardly noticeable 2:1 up to 5:1 theatrical or even more focused.

Down lightsDown lights create ambient lighting. Pull-out and rotational downlights can also be used as spotlights. Light planning software such as Dialux can be used to calculate comfortable and suitable light levels.Light distribution measurements are usually taken at 0.8 or 1.0m above floor level. Light levels should not differ by more than ~30% at any point across the floor.
