Headmistress’s Message

This has been a remarkable year for Normanhurst School. Many pupils have made outstanding progress this year and achieved impressive new academic goals; pupils have excelled in sports; performed with such talent in music and drama and some have taken on new responsibilities and become inspiring leaders within the school community.

There have been exciting educational trips, we have hosted a range of speakers and workshops, pupils have volunteered in the local community and been a pleasure to teach and spend time with in school.

I wish all those pupils leaving us this year every success in their new schools and colleges. GCSE Results Day is on Thursday 24 August and Year 11 pupils can collect their results from the school hall between 8.30-10.00am.

I hope our pupils and their families enjoy a relaxing summer break and enjoy doing the things that there is too little time for in a busy term. I hope pupils come back to school refreshed, well-rested and eager to learn, prepared to work hard and to enjoy their time in school.

I am already looking forward to welcoming our new and existing pupils back to school on Wednesday 6 September at the usual start time.

With my very best wishes for a happy and safe holiday.

Mrs Claire Osborn Headmistress

Year 1 Visit to Suntrap Centre

On Friday 23 June Year 1 went on a trip to Suntrap Outdoor Education Centre in High Beach with their friends from Braeside school. The children took part in 3 different sensory activities and got to meet a number of animals.

It was a fun day and the children described it as being “brilliant” and “exciting”.

EYFS Celebration of the Year

On Monday 3 July all of the children in Early Years joined together for their annual Celebration of the Year. It was a lovely afternoon with the children, teachers, families and friends coming together to celebrate a wonderful year in the department.

Kindergarten shared some ‘highlights of their year’. Reception Greenin recited the poem ‘Please Mrs Butler’ and Reception Fisher told the story of ‘The Wide Mouthed Frog’.

After everyone received their individual certificates it was time for the grand finale. The children came together as a choir to sing ‘The Ugly Duckling’ supported by beautiful dancing swans from Lower Kindergarten.

Colchester Zoo Trip

On the hottest day of the year so far, Years 2, 3 and 4 had a fantastic

trip to Colchester Zoo and thoroughly enjoyed their workshops. Year

2 participated in an ‘Explore’ workshop, where pupils learnt about

animal skins and bones. Years 3 and 4 made links to their learning in

Art by looking at a variety of animal patterns and sketching them out.

The children heard a talk on penguins as they watched them waddle

around which was very informative. Pupils then had the opportunity

to walk around the zoo to see even more animals such as meerkats,

tortoises, frogs, fish, and many more. The highlight for most of the

children and the teachers was getting to feed a giraffe and an elephant. It certainly caused some excitement!

Years 5 & 6 Trip to Southend Aquarium

“On a very sunny and hot day, we packed our bags and left school to

go to Southend Aquarium. I was very excited. Finally at 9.25am we

arrived. Eventually we got to the beach which was right opposite the

aquarium. We put our sun cream on and started throwing stones

into the water. Then we had a shell competition which me and

Michaela won for the shell with the most layers.

At the aquarium we saw lots of sea creatures. It was very dark

inside. After we passed through three rooms we went and had our

lunch. While we were eating we watched a pa woman feeding penguins. The penguins were very small.

When we had all finished our lunch we went back in and started filling up our fun worksheets. Next we got to

stroke—with our pinky—a starfish. It was rough, smooth and squidgy all at the same time. We then got told

(by Rosie) how and what starfish eat, which was very disgusting.

Next we went through a tube where we could see lots of sea creatures. We even saw Michaela’s favourite, a

shark. Eventually we went and sat right where we could see the otters which were my favourite creatures.

Half an hour later we went to the beach and the teachers got ice cream for us. It was very yummy. After the

ice cream we went back to the minibus.” By Riana, Year 5

Reception Farewell Tea

To celebrate the end of term the Reception classes had ‘afternoon tea’ at a local café. It was a lovely way for Mrs Fisher and Miss Greenin to say a big thank you for all their hard work during the Reception year. As usual, the children behaved impeccably and were great ambassadors for the school. We wish them well for their move into Key Stage 1 in September.

Old MacDonald’s Farm Trip

On Tuesday 4 July, pupils from Kindergarten to Year 1 enjoyed a fabulous end of year trip to Old MacDonald’s Farm in Brentwood. They met farm animals like Freckles the Shetland pony and Betty the owl! The older children were interested in noting the features of the different animals.

Everyone then had a great time playing on farm-themed activities including inflatable slides, mazes and battle balls.

The children deserved a lovely day out for all their hard work and effort during the past year. All their teachers are very proud of the children and will miss them as they move up to the next stage of their education.

Atilla’s Hockey Ambition

As regular readers of the newsletter know, we are always interested in reporting our pupils’ successes both in and out of school. We recently learned that one of our younger pupils, Atilla in Year 4, is already pursuing his love of hockey.

When did you start playing hockey? I started playing hockey when I was 7.

How often do you practise and where do you practise? I practise every Tuesday at Walthamstow Academy.

Which position do you play? Right mid-field.

You recently received an award. What was it for? It was the shield for the most dedicated player.

Do you have any other talents? I’ve come third in a chess competition in Colindale.

Will you continue to play chess and hockey next year? Yes, I really enjoy it and I would love to be a professional hockey player.

Junior School English Day

On Friday 30 June, the Juniors and Early Years pupils were visited by three actors from Hobgoblin Theatre Company who performed a hilarious version of Robin Hood! The actors played all the characters throughout and even included the Juniors in some parts of the performance! After the children had watched the play, they returned to their classrooms and wrote some excellent creative writing based on the play.

The afternoon held the annual Junior Inter-House Spelling Bee in which Warren narrowly won by 6 house points! Well done!

TfL Safety Visit

On Tuesday 27 June Year 6 were visited by a member of Transport for London who ran a workshop on how to keep safe on public transport. It was especially important as many of the pupils will be taking public transport when they move into Year 7 in September. It was a very engaging workshop which demonstrated to the class what to do in a series of scenarios as well as how to enjoy the great range of transport that TFL provides. The class found it very useful and felt a lot more prepared to travel with friends, or independently, as they make the transition into the Seniors.

Year 6 Leaving Assembly

On Wednesday 5 July the Juniors and parents of Year 6 came together to watch Year 6’s leaving assembly. The pupils had been diligently rehearsing a short production called ‘The Zoo’ as well as Charlie Puth’s hit ‘See you again’, and performed both spectacularly. During the performance their parents were able to see photos of the pupils ranging from Kindergarten to Year 6! The class finally gave certificates to teachers for their hard work helping them over the years. It was a wonderful assembly and a great way to say goodbye and thank you to Normanhurst Juniors.

Sponsored Walk

This year’s sponsored walk in aid of the school’s nominated charity, SWAN/Dylan’s Story, took place on the afternoon of Tuesday 11 July. The whole school ventured out in torrential rain armed with coats and umbrellas, but nevertheless in high spirits.

Pupils from Years 3-10 covered a total of four miles with a half way stop for refreshments at the Biker’s Hut in High Beech. Many thanks to the NSPA for supplying the much appreciated squash and biscuits.

The EYFS and Key Stage 1 children were aiming for their own pitstop at Connaught Waters but were forced back early due to the rain.

Despite the unkind weather, a total of £2701.31 was raised, making it a very worthwhile venture.

Junior Spanish Workshops

On Monday 10 July, the advisor of the Spanish Embassy, Jesús M. Hernández González, visited Normanhurst School and led four workshops for all pupils from Reception to Year 6. The aim of his workshops was to engage young children in hearing and speaking Spanish through fairy-tales, music, and magic tricks.

The first session saw the Reception pupils sing engaging Spanish songs, while Jesús played the guitar. The second workshop was planned for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils and it enabled them all to revise colours through a song and magic tricks. Years 3 and Year 4 pupils

learned greetings through a song and revised colours and animal names through a series of magic tricks. Finally, Year 5 and Year 6 pupils were given a chance to sing Spanish songs and learned many animal names through a fairy-tale.

Jesús is a very experienced professional, who specialises in teaching Spanish as a second language to young children, a role that he holds as a supervisor within the Department for Education office at the Spanish Embassy in London.

All pupils were really engaged by the activities presented to them by Jesús, and it was really worthwhile to see how many words they managed to repeat and memorise through all the songs, tales, and magic tricks. Maravilloso!

Year 7 Design and Technology Trip

Year 7 pupils had the opportunity to explore the collection at the Brands Museum, Notting Hill. They developed a greater understanding of how brands evolve and use a range of visual techniques to market their products. Students participated in a session taught by the education coordinator in which, following research of existing brand marketing, they had to propose the next stage in the brands’ development, taking into account what the brands want to communicate to their target audience.

Pupils worked independently in the second half of the day to create visual studies of key objects in the collection.

My Charity Haircut

“Before I got my haircut I didn’t want to say goodbye to my long hair but I realised it is for a good charity to help people that need hair. When I came back from PE I went into Lisa n Girls, the hairdressers down the road, I was so excited. When I got my hair cut I actually preferred it to when it was long. They gave me the full treatment by giving me a hair wash, making layers in my hair and curling my hair. When they curled my hair, that was the second time in my life that my hair was curled. When my mum went to pay, the lady called Emma said it was free. With my hair I have given a little girl some real hair for her to have a wig.”

Year 7 Trip to the Institut Français

“On Thursday 29 June, Year 7 went on a trip to visit the French Institute, which personally I found interesting. There were two buildings – one for 0-12 year olds, which had popular books for children e.g. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter etc. and a building which had a café and a cinema.

When visiting the first building I thought it was impressive to read a famous Roald Dahl book in French – it made me see things from a different perspective. At the second building, we ate lunch and then watched a French film (with English subtitles) ‘The Young Girls of Rochefort’. It was a musical and I thought that the plot, which was about two twins finding their true love, was sweet; they kept missing each other by a few seconds which made us wonder whether they would meet each other again.

I think that this was a trip to remember and I would want to visit the French Institute again.”

By Harleen, 7K

“On Thursday 29 June, the Normanhurst pupils of both Year 7 classes went on a French trip to the Institut Français. Institut Français is a French language school based in Kensington, Central London. When we arrived at the venue, one of the staff members took us up to the library - ‘la bibliothèque’.

The library at the Institut Français was great; it offered great activities for all age groups from ages 4-16. The first activity we took part in was to read a French story. The story was based on different animals taking part in a musical concert. This gave the effect of a musical

orchestra. After this, we were given a word search which included words based on all musical terms. We had to find all the musical terms found in the text. As we came to the end of the first part of the trip, all the students were told to write stories to do with music. We wrote some words in French, some in English, and read them out to the class.

The second part of the trip was in the cinema. The movie was called ‘The Young Girls of Rochefort’, and it was about two twin girls who left their city each seeking romance! Although the movie was in French, there were English subtitles written beneath. The one thing I loved about the movie was the musical theatre genre which linked very well with the movie theme!

Overall, I think the trip was a great experience and great fun. I hope to come again, but to take part in different activities.”

By Nicole, 7T

“A couple of Thursdays ago, the whole of Year 7 went on a trip to the French Institute in Kensington. First, we went to the kids’ French library to spend the morning. In the kids’ library, we read all sorts of French books and participated in some fun French activities. After, we went to the cinema to watch a film. Parts of it were very interesting, and parts of it were a bit slow. To sum up, the trip was fascinating.”

Year 7 Induction Day

As part of their transition into the Seniors, new Year 7 groups participated in a moving up day programme.

After an introduction in the hall by Mrs Osborn and Mr Beint the pupils met their new form tutors and took part in taster lessons for Art and Science.

After lunch together in the hall the pupils went to Gillwell Park to enjoy some exciting outdoor activities which gave them more opportunities to get to know each other and bond in their groups.

Breakfast at The Front Room

Mrs Huxford and some of the Learning Support team invited sixteen students from Years 7 to 9 to have a Monday morning breakfast at The Front Room in Station Road, Chingford. The pupils selected were those who had improved their study and organizational skills this year, with the help of the Learning Support Department.

Pupils chose a variety of breakfasts from porridge to a full English. Everyone agreed it was the best way to start a Monday morning!

Annual Music Concert

Guests had a fantastic night at the Annual Music Concert. They were welcomed with a glass of wine on arrival, before platters of cheese and biscuits were brought to individually decorated tables, perfect for nibbling on throughout the performances.

Pupils performed a wide variety of pieces, both instrumental and vocal. There were some very talented individual performances, including Olivia singing ‘Wing Beneath My Wings’, Beth’s rendition of ‘Get Here If You Can’ and ‘True Colours’ by father and daughter, Mr Beint and Laila. The Junior and Senior Choirs and Rock Bands also impressed the audience with a number of songs. Nicolas in Year 2 showcased his talent in playing the viola, and both Maya and Ilayda played some very complicated pieces on the piano. Well done everyone, you should all be very proud!

Speech Day and Prize Giving

On Thursday 6 July Normanhurst held the annual Speech Day and Prize Giving, the perfect opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and successes of pupils throughout the year.

The event took place in Chingford Assembly Hall, and this year there was a very special guest speaker, Hannah Newman. Hannah attended Normanhurst from 1995 to 2007, and kindly agreed to come in and inspire the audience with tales of what she has been doing since leaving the school, while also bringing back very fond memories for some. It was great to hear her talk about her experiences; she gave the pupils a lot to think about.

As well as the huge array of prizes that were awarded, the evening was filled with many performances and musical numbers. The orchestra impressed the crowd of friends and family with the ‘Half Minute Waltz’, the Junior Rock Band performed ‘Come Together’ by Lennon and McCartney, while the Senior Rock Band provided a great finale with ‘Living on a Prayer’.

We are very proud of our Heads of School, Maya and Max, who both gave very moving speeches about their time at Normanhurst. We wish the new Heads of School, House Captains and Prefects the best of luck next year.

It was a fantastic evening full of proud pupils, staff, friends and family. Congratulations to all of our prize winners!

Year 10 CCSS Visit

As part of their Careers Enrichment programme, Year 10 pupils visited the Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies, or CCSS, an established and leading ISA independent sixth form college offering high quality A level courses.

The pupils were invited to participate in a range of different A level taster lessons to give them a sense of what it would be like to study at this level. Classes included Law, Psychology, Economics and Politics, to name a few.

In addition to visiting CCSS, the pupils were taken on a guided tour of Cambridge, taking in the historic sites and world famous colleges. It was a particularly good time to visit as it was graduation day for the students, who were dressed in their ceremonial gowns as they walked through the streets.

Our thanks to Mr Botha and Ms Hammersley (CCSS) for arranging a wonderful day, as well as Mr Christou, Ms Kazim and Ms Deen who accompanied the pupils on the trip.

Year 10 Careers Day

The Year 10 careers programme culminated in the annual Careers and Mock Interview Day on Friday 7 July 2017. The day consisted of two sessions. In the morning the pupils had the opportunity to listen to seasoned professionals who introduced them to their respective professions. The speakers were:

Mr Sam Harmon (Barclays, Finance)

Mr Vinesh Kumar (Entrepreneur)

Ms Karen Holden (Law)

Ms Sinead Greenaway (UKTV, Media)

Ms Siena Reed (Just So, Creative Design)

After the morning sessions, the pupils and the speakers were treated to a drinks reception and lunch, hosted by Mrs Osborn.

In the afternoon, the pupils were subjected to 30 minutes of interviews, during which they had to talk about their ambitions, interests and involvement in everyday school life. The interview panel was very impressed with the pupils and gave them some constructive feedback at the end of the session.

The Year 10 group, soon to be in Year 11, has gained valuable experience in how to conduct themselves in a formal interview scenario, an experience which will be extremely useful for the imminent sixth form application process.

The year 10 pupils would like to thank everybody who made the day possible:

Mr Botha for organising the event.

Guest speakers and the interview panel who took time out of their busy schedules help.

Mrs Osborn, Mrs Huxford, Ms Bonella and Ms Harmon for a wonderful drinks reception.

Mr Holden and his team for organising the venues.

Paul, Nicky and their team for a wonderful lunch and all the other catering arrangements.

9B Charity Netball Match

Monday 3 July saw the annual epic sporting contest of the staff versus pupil netball match that 9B runs in order to raise money for the school charity SWAN. The game took place during PSHE and pupils and staff all paid a donation to watch the game.

It was an excellent game, with both staff and pupils playing really well. There was exceptional teamwork by the pupils with some outstanding shooting skills by the staff team.

As a result of this, staff took the early lead. The pupils continued to work hard and with some fantastic play began to make a comeback. The final score was 4-4.

Pupils were very generous in their donations and support, raising a total of £50.00. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped to raise money for SWAN.

Year 11 Leavers Prom

The Year 11 leavers and many Normanhurst members of staff enjoyed a glamorous and fun-filled prom at Chigwell Hall on Friday 23 June. The evening began with photos in the secret garden followed by a delicious three course meal. All of the pupils looked amazing with the girls wearing elegant prom dresses and the boys wearing sharp suits. After the meal the pupils and staff enjoyed a disco and a dressing up box with some amusing props donated by the Drama Department. We wish our Year 11 pupils well on the journey beyond Normanhurst. We will miss them greatly.

Senior Gifted & Talented Visit to Forest School

“At our day in Forest School we attended the borough’s debate seminar. We had the opportunity to meet and engage in conversion with schools around the borough; Forest School, Harris School, Braeside, Saint Nicholas, Connaught School for Girls and Kelmscott to name a few.

We started the day with an introductory talk with the head of Middle School of Forest, Mrs J.K. Venditti, and we heard an encouraging welcome speech delivered by a Year 12 student on the topic of Model United Nations (MUN) and debates.

After the talk, we were then led off by prefects to the first lesson of the day, Philosophy and Ethics, where we looked at the responsibility of many countries and the spheres of ethical responsibility. We learnt quite a lot about the varying opinions on the matter of migration and why people felt a certain way. Later we attended a lesson taught by Mr Whitmes in the infamous Forest Martin Centre to look at the geographical side of migration in order to further support our final arguments. We addressed the impacts and effects of social, environmental, economic and political changes in migration.

After the lesson we broke for tuck and then were escorted to the Aston Block Room A16 in which we were taught a history lesson. We looked at the reasoning and effects (both negative and positive) of migration. We looked at two case studies – Windrush and Mayflower transportation to the New World that we now know as America. This workshop was quite riveting and enjoyable.

Before we could actually debate, we needed to establish the overall basics of presentation and debate tactics. This was taught to us by Mr Barlow, Forest’s English teacher and Debate Master. We gathered in the Martin Centre and attended a brief talk delivered by Arifa Nasim. Arifa has spent an inspirational Gap Year by founding Educate2Eradicate, an organisation that delivers safeguarding training locally on FGM (female genital mutilation), Forced Marriage and Honour Abuse. Her speech was fascinating and very pleasurable. We proceeded to do some research on the migration laws of our assigned countries and then subsequently we broke for lunch, provided by Forest School. This time was spent efficiently as it not only gave us the chance to observe and understand the minds our peers but also allowed us to find which countries to make alliances with in order to further widen our options with our debate later on that day.

Once our lunch hour was up we were then given an hour and a half to come up with our resolutions for our countries’ migration problems. We then (from 2:30 to 4.00) debated our points with the collection of children who also attended. The debate was as realistic as it could possibly have been and it was a wonderful experience to have. This trip gave us a detailed and great insight into the world of MUN Debates between countries in the UN on significant matters that impact everyone’s lives.” By Nicole, 10K

Senior Connaught House Trip

Connaught pupils enjoyed a wide range of activities at the

Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning on their annual house

trip. The 54 acre outdoor classroom set in delightful Essex

countryside provides activities including team building skills, caving,

and archery. But by far the best, according to Maisie in Year 10, was

the low ropes course over water. Navigating the course required

considerable skill, which was amply displayed by many pupils.

However, Tulsi and Prince are to be particularly commended for

completing the final and hardest task which involved crossing the water on a log without holding onto anything.

Many others fell into the 2 metre deep water including Ekene (twice), Paarth, Dennis, Kyarna, Eden and Lily.

Thankfully they remained good natured and went to change into their spare clothes. Also to be commended is

Alex in 7K, who attempted all activities on several occasions and often volunteered to go first.

The first activity undertaken by Group B was caving, which involved donning a red boiler suit, helmet and knee

supports before crawling through pitch black tunnels. These were particularly wet after the recent rain, and

Prince, who completed first, said he enjoyed it but felt it was “uncomfortable” and “claustrophobic”. This

activity was not popular with the girls, and was changed to archery for other groups later in the day.

Team building activities were wide-ranging and Imogen and Helena in Group A had to extricate themselves

from being tied together with string at their wrists. Progress was

made by Group B at the marble run, where they eventually agreed a

strategy led by Maisie on how to control the movement of a marble

on pipe guttering which had to be angled correctly.

Group B also made excellent progress at the swamp crossing, under

the firm supervision of Rachel. Jake issued helpful instructions, Alex

was perfect at the front and Maisie took charge at the back by

picking up the tyres. She was praised by the group leader, Simon,

who said her movements were “precise and focused.” Simon also praised Ekene who was in charge of the

middle of the bridge and represented a ‘solid foundation’.

Annaliese was also praised during the ball juggling session, where pupils formed a circle and threw balls to each

other while taking care with their footwork and ensuring that they did not touch the floor. Simon said she had

“not put a foot wrong!” Altogether this had been a highly successful day, taking place under warm sunshine

while admiring the rural setting of Lambourne End in the splendid countryside.

Year 10 Work Experience

“For my Work Experience placement, I had the honour of working at Reynold’s Catering company. Reynold’s is one of the leading fresh fruit and veg suppliers and wholesalers to the UK food service industry and catering industry. Verne Wooden was in charge of my work experience, and made sure I had a set timetable for each of the days I was there.

Year 10 Work Experience continued

On my first day of work experience, I had to have my health and safety induction. This made sure that I would be safe whilst working on site, but it also gave me background information on Reynold’s. I was then introduced to the staff who worked in the Contact Centre. I had a very warm and happy welcome, with many people who truly wanted to show me the work they do. After this I was placed in the Procurement Department. This is where the staff at Reynold’s decide what fruit and veg they should pick from different areas. These areas would consist of farms in London to farms in Spain. They make many international flights to make sure the products they buy are the best for their customers. During my time in Procurement, the staff made sure I had a good time, and they helped me to feel welcome.

On my third day of work experience I was placed in Supply Chain. This was by far my favourite part of Work Experience. Firstly I was shown the process of how the food has gone from being picked and brought, to the customers then calling in and ordering their foods, to them then being able to buy and sell the buyers’ products. After looking at this, I had to put on a pair of steel toed boots and a high vis jacket. This was because I was being taken down to the warehouse. As soon as I walked in it was freezing! The warehouse is where all the food is stored before departure. It was full of people who were going around on forklift trucks and many people scanning the products. As part of my time down in the warehouse, I was able to see the packing area and the loading bays. The picking area is where the small products are picked for the customers, and are placed into the lorries. Then, with the forklift trucks, the staff are able to move big loads of products. This was very interesting, but also fun, as I was able to move a pack of eggs, and some vegetables, whilst being shown how to add it onto the system.

Throughout my time at Reynold’s I was able to understand how to work well as a team and how everything comes into place in order for the food to be sold in shops and restaurants. This was a very interesting and fun experience for me.”

Senior Warren House Trip

“Warren House visited the Harlow Outdoor Centre to celebrate yet another successful year. It was a trip not to forget where everyone managed to have fun. Some of us even confronted our phobias like water and heights. Every student was allocated a group with a teacher and had two activities to do - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All the students had a great time doing activities such as Rock Climbing, High Ropes, Mountain Biking and Canoeing.

The school staff also took part. Ms Wren joined in with the High Ropes and Ms Taylor joined the Mountain Bikers. Miss Deen was with her group cheering them on which boosted their spirits. The weather wasn’t too good and started raining heavily, we all got soaked.

I would like to thank Mr Botha and my fellow Year 10’s for organising a wonderful and exciting day. Warren

House would also like to thank the Parents Association for their contribution to make the trip possible.”

This year there was an amazing response to the annual photography competition. With new categories ‘Portrait’, ‘Nature’ and ‘What makes me happy’, the pupils and staff were able to think about the meaning of these themes and visually interpret them with stunning results. The standard of the photography this year was exceptionally high and it is always a joy to see the creative responses of our pupils. After some difficult deliberating the following winners were chosen:

World Hockey Series Trip On Monday 19 June, Years 7 and 8 had the good fortune to be able to attend the semi-finals of the Men’s World Hockey Series, and watched two games at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre. Pupils drank plenty of fluids and covered themselves with sun cream as it was a very hot day. The first game had just begun when pupils arrived and Scotland went into the lead. Sadly the result did not finish in their favour and Pakistan, the opponents, completed the match with a 3-1 win. Before the second game began a few hand-picked pupils from various schools took part in a competition on the pitch trying to score goals from a line of static balls against the clock. Ubaid in Year 8 represented Normanhurst and managed to score 5 out of 10; he was narrowly beaten by one shot.

The second game was between the Netherlands and Canada. Pupils saw some very good stick work which will hopefully rub off on the pupils for next term’s hockey lessons.

National ISA Athletics Championships, Birmingham Normanhurst pupils made up a large part of the London North team at the National Athletics Championships. Pupils participated in a wide range of events on both track and field.

Prince (9T) - 200m gold and silver in long jump. Prince set a national record in the 200m.

Alicia (7K) - 100m silver.

Lauryn (Y6) - 80m silver and bronze in the relay.

This was a fantastic day out and it was great that Mrs Osborn and Miss Barnard were there to support and encourage pupils and to award medals. Well done to everyone who participated, and congratulations to all medal winners.

Borough Athletics Normanhurst has a very talented group of athletes so this year the team were taken to the LBWF athletics meet at Lee Valley. This was another successful day and records were once again broken and medals won. Again Prince won the 200m and broke a long-standing borough record. Jesse (9B) won silver in the high jump with a new school record of 1.67m. Alicia won gold in the 100m in a new school record, with Isaac (9B) winning the bronze medal in the 100m. Paige (7K) won silver in the 200m.

Value Games This year Year 2 and Year 5 had their chance to take part in the Value Games. This event is an Olympic legacy inspired event and allows pupils to have a go at many Olympic sports including archery, tennis, athletics and volleyball to name a few. Pupils were grouped with children from other schools across the borough and make friends along the way. This is a fabulous event and really strives to meet the Olympic Values, as teams have names such as Inspiration, Honesty, Dedication, Determination and Communication.

Rounders The girls’ rounders team represented Normanhurst in the LBWF tournament held at Forest School last month.

The girls played well in the qualifying round to make it through to the semi-finals; they met Forest and gave them a good game but the strong hitting from Forest saw them through. In a tough final Forest lost to Chingford Foundation. Our girls played really well all day and some fantastic hitting from Hawi and excellent bowling from Hannah helped them get to the semi. Well done to the whole team!

Running Club Mrs Botha and Mrs Taylor would like to thank everyone who has

come along and supported the club. We would particularly like to thank

Normanhurst parents Mrs Conway and Mr Kumar who have

generously given up their time to help this club. We are really

looking forward to this club next year and we hope more children

will attend.

Inter-House Golf This year saw the second year for our golf sessions

and the inter-house golf competition. The standard of play this year

has been very impressive. The event took place at High Beech golf

club over 9 holes on the red course.

In the junior competition, the results were:

1st Lily, Year 5 Warren

2nd James, Year 2 Warren

3rd Atilla, Year 4 Warren

The senior competition result were:

1st Rafael, 7T Warren

2nd Bradley, 7K Connaught

3rd Reuben, 7T Warren

Overall Warren House won for the second consecutive year.

If your child would like to take part in golf club next year then please register them with the office as places are

limited.

Normanhurst School Parents’ Association

Hello to all the parents at Normanhurst

As anticipated the Summer term has flown by and the long summer holiday is almost upon us! The Summer BBQ was a great success, with the rain (almost) staying away! As well as raising funds there was a really friendly and sociable

atmosphere which is just as important to us all. Thank you to all who supported the BBQ and all the other events that we have hosted throughout the school year.

In the Autumn term we have the following events planned:-

Our AGM will be held early in October and we will circulate the date in the new term. This is a great chance to meet the current association and parents and provide feedback and ideas. Additional committee members are also extremely welcome! Please do come along.

The Autumn term will also include a family social event and details will be available following our September meeting.

Finally, we are considering hosting a Christmas Disco for the early years children; if you are an early years parent please let us know if this is something you would support, as we appreciate that it is a very busy time of the year!

Our target in the next school year is to ‘Enhance the curriculum by making IT mobile’. In this respect we aim to raise funds to purchase electronic tablets which can be used in the classrooms. This will mean that the teaching staff are able to use the internet for learning without using the IT suites. More information will follow in the next newsletter.

Remember that you can keep up to date with the NSPA activities by liking the NSPA Facebook page. This is an excellent way to discover the activities that are planned by the NSPA for the Autumn Term.

Our next NSPA meeting is 11 September 2017 at 7.15pm in the school library and all are welcome. In the meantime have a relaxing summer break and we look forward to seeing you at the forthcoming NSPA events.

Best wishes

The NSPA Committee
