appearance in such a race this year.“She’s a special horse and we had to keep

trying,” trainer Ken McPeek said.Daddys Lil Darling ($6 to win) closed

from third in the field of nine to win the American Oaks at 1 1/4 miles on turf by a half-length over 9-2 Madam Dancealot, who closed well from last place.

Daddys Lil Darling was timed in 2:00.11. Ridden by Mike Smith, Daddys Lil Darling stalked pacesetter Coachwhip to the turn. Smith guided Daddys Lil Darling off the rail with a three-wide move in early stretch and caught favored New Money Honey in the final furlong.

Smith said he was happy with Daddys Lil Darling’s position “the whole way.”

“I was up in the pocket a little too much,” he said of the filly’s position on the turn. “At the three-eighths pole, the horse next to me slowed and the two in front moved up.”

With running room, Smith guided Daddys Lil Darling wide into the stretch.

“I needed to get good momentum,” he said.

Daddys Lil Darling was fully extended to hold off Madam Dancealot. The two fillies have run well in major races against each other in the past. Daddys Lil Darling and Madam Dancealot were second and third in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Chal-lenge Cup at Keeneland on Oct. 14.

Madam Dancealot looked like a winner briefly in the final furlong.

“I thought Madam Dancealot would win because she has a good kick,” trainer Rich-ard Baltas said. “I thought she’d do it. The filly of Mike’s is a good horse.

Kathy’s Song, also trained by Baltas, finished third.

Daddys Lil Darling is owned by breeder Nancy Polk’s Normandy Farm. By deceased Scat Daddy, Daddys Lil Darling has won 4 of 15 starts and earned $1,138,405. She went past seven figures in earnings with the winner’s share of $180,000 from the American Oaks.

Earlier this year, Daddys Lil Darling was second in three Grade 1 races – the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in April, the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in May, and the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.

“We wanted to keep her in straight 3-year-old filly competition before the year was out,” McPeek said. “Fortunately, she stayed on form.”

With foot issues no longer a concern, Silent Bird won his first graded stakes in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Santa Anita on Dec. 30.

On Breeders’ Cup weekend at Del Mar in November, Silent Bird was entered for the Damascus Stakes for sprinters, only to be withdrawn with an abscess in a foot.

The $100,690 Midnight Lute Stakes was Silent Bird’s first start since finishing third in the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Stakes at Del Mar in August. The 5-year-old Silent Bird won his first stakes of the year in the $100,690 Midnight Lute, edging 12-1 Tough Sunday by a neck.

“He’s had a tough year,” trainer Mark Glatt said. “Minor things have come up at inopportune times. It looks like he’s back.”

Silent Bird ($8.20) was timed in 1:16.03. Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Silent Bird was always near the front, stalking the early pace of even-money Americanize, who set fractions of 22.18 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 44.75 for a half-mile.

Silent Bird wore blinkers for the first time and broke from the rail in the field of seven.

“Mark said to be careful out of the gate and that he could be sluggish,” Desormeaux said. “He was right. I had to ride him hard for a good 100 yards out of there.”

Racing on the inside, Silent Bird took the lead on the turn. He drifted off the rail and then quickly back to the inside in early stretch. Silent Bird led by a head with a furlong remaining.

Tough Sunday rallied four wide in the stretch, leaving jockey Tyler Baze to rue whether his mount would have been more effective closer to Silent Bird.

“I didn’t see the horse,” Baze said. “My horse gave everything he had. It could have been different if we would have been closer.”

Tough Sunday finished a nose in front of Americanize. Calculator finished fourth, followed by Solid Wager, Ike Walker, and Ohio.

Calculator was racing behind Silent Bird in early stretch when the winner ducked to the inside. Glatt was briefly concerned the situation would draw the attention of the stewards.

“Fortunately, there wasn’t an inquiry,”

he said.Silent Bird races for Robbie Norman and

has won 6 of 9 starts and earned $316,800. By deceased Summer Bird, Silent Bird won five consecutive races from January 2016 to January of this year, a span that included a win in the Damascus Stakes at Santa Anita in November 2016.

Midnight Crossing proved impossible to catch in the Grade 3 Robert Frankel Stakes for fillies and mares on turf at Santa Anita on Dec. 30, rewarding jockey Brice Blanc’s decision to put the longshot on an early lead.

Allowed to set a slow pace, Midnight Crossing ($47.60) held off a late run from 8-5 favorite Elysea’s World to win the first stakes of her career. Blanc rode with confi-dence and thought the 4-year-old Midnight Crossing had sufficient energy to hold off the closers in the $100,345 race for fillies and mares.

“When I called on her at the eighth pole, she had a lot left,” Blanc said.

The longest shot in the field of six, Midnight Crossing won by a half-length, finishing 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:48.10.

Midnight Crossing set fractions of 24.27 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 48.94 for a half-mile. Blanc and trainer Richard Baltas spoke in the paddock about placing Midnight Crossing on the lead, but also the need to avoid fighting for an early advantage with another rival even though the race lacked a confirmed front-runner.

“Richie said, ‘Don’t get in a speed duel, but don’t fight her,’ ” Blanc said. “She stayed relaxed nicely.”

Elysea’s World closed from fifth of six to just miss, and finished a neck in front of 9-1

Laseen. Jockey Javier Castellano guided Elysea’s World to a wide position in the stretch and trailed by two lengths with a furlong remaining.

“I thought I would catch her at one point,” Castellano said. “It was hard.

“I’m not disappointed with the filly. There was a slow pace.”

Laseen raced in traffic in the stretch and was beaten less than a length.

“If she gets through, I think she’s right there,” trainer Jim Cassidy said.

Gliding By, also trained by Baltas, finished fourth, followed by Responsible-forlove and Penjade.

Midnight Crossing races for the partner-ships of Abbondanza Racing and Medal-lion Racing. An Irish-bred by Dark Angel, Midnight Crossing was purchased for $240,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale.

Previously trained by Roger Attfield at Woodbine, Midnight Crossing was third in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron Stakes in July.

Midnight Crossing began her career in Ireland, where she won a maiden race at Leopardstown in 2016. Midnight Cross-ing was exported to North America in the winter of 2016-17.
