On March 26, California Chrome won the Dubai World Cup. Three weeks later, Arro-gate made the first start of his career at Los Alamitos and lost.

Yet in the 6 1/2 months since that race, Arrogate came far and fast, and on Nov. 5, in only the sixth start of his career, he knocked off California Chrome in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, announc-ing himself as the horse ready to take the mantle from California Chrome as the best dirt horse in the world in 2017.

was the third straight year he won it, and he used the exact template this year as last year with American Pharoah, training Arrogate straight into the Classic without another race following the Travers.

“You can only do that with a great horse,” Baffert said. “I cannot believe what he’s accomplished. He’s just a big kid, learning how to run.”

Arrogate, who started from the outside post in the field of nine, was third in the early going as California Chrome led from Melatonin. California Chrome had broken like a shot from the gate and immediately took the track from his rivals, with Victor Espinoza taking him off the rail though fractions of 23.28 seconds for the quarter, 47.15 for a half, and 1:10.96 for six furlongs.

Just as it looked as though California Chrome might sneak away three furlongs from home, Arrogate suddenly darted inside of Melatonin and took up the chase.

“I wound up cutting the corner going into the far turn, and he really picked it

up,” said Mike Smith, who rode Arrogate. “Then I got outside, and he was relentless. He’s got some stamina.”

California Chrome still led by 1 1/2 lengths a furlong out, but Arrogate steadily gained ground and caught him just before the wire, giving Smith his record 25th victory in a Breeders’ Cup race.

“I thought there was no way,” Baffert said of his thoughts as the horses came through the lane. “California Chrome is a great horse. I didn’t think we could run him down. I thought he’d get second. I’m thinking, ‘At least he showed up.’ But then I saw Mike getting down on him, and that big stride of his. That was an incredible race by two incredible horses.”

California Chrome had won six straight races this year coming into the Classic.

“He just got outrun,” said Art Sher-man, who trains California Chrome. “No excuses. He ran his eyeballs out.”

The figures bore that out. Arrogate got a Beyer of 120. California Chrome’s 119 was a

career-best, but he got beat.Sherman said California Chrome is

scheduled to race once more, in the $12 million Pegasus at Gulfstream in January, before retiring to stud.

Arrogate, a son of Unbridled’s Song, did not get to the races until April owing to shin problems at 2. Baffert, who trains Arro-gate for Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Judd-monte Farms, gave him the proper time to recover, and the results in recent months have proved the wisdom of patience.

Arrogate has won five straight races since his losing debut, and the $3.3 million he earned in the Classic brought his career earnings to more than $4 million.

Garrett O’Rourke, the racing manager for Juddmonte Farms, reiterated after the race what he had said before, that Arrogate would remain in training at age 4.

If there had been doubt as to who would take Chrome’s place at the top of the charts when he exited, there is no doubt now.

Midway on the backstretch of the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita, Highland Reel had a comfortable lead that rapidly became insurmountable. Highland Reel led by more than two lengths on the first turn, an advantage extended to 6 1/2 lengths on the final turn.

For Irish jockey Seamus Heffernan, a simple game plan was working brilliantly.

“I was happy to make the running,” Heffernan said. “I kicked when I thought I should kick. He’s brave in front, and when you turn him loose, he’ll go.”

Highland Reel’s lead was too much for a stellar chasing pack. Leading by four lengths with a furlong to go, Highland Reel held off Flintshire, the leading turf- marathon runner in the United States, to win the richest race of his career.

Highland Reel ($9.60) ran 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:23, winning by 1 3/4 lengths. Flint-shire, the 9-5 favorite, finished 2 1/4 lengths in front of Found, the winner of the 2015 BC Turf at Keeneland and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on Oct. 2.

Highland Reel and Found are trained by Aidan O’Brien for Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor, and Susan Magnier. Highland Reel gave O’Brien a record sixth win in the BC Turf, all since 2002.

Highland Reel was third in the Arc and was rated as a BC Turf candidate by his owners following that race, O’Brien said. The tactics of taking the 4-year-old colt to the lead were planned in advance.

“We know he gets the mile and a half

very well,” O’Brien said. “We know that he handles fast ground. He doesn’t mind dictating. He doesn’t mind sitting in.”

Flintshire had the best finish of an American-trained runner. Ulysses, based in England, finished fourth, followed by Ashleyluvssugar, the dominant turf-marathon runner in California in recent months.

The BC Turf was likely the final start for Flintshire and Found.

Flintshire, who won three graded stakes this year in New York, was fourth with a half-mile remaining and closed well to be closest to the winner at the finish.

“He ran a great race,” trainer Chad Brown said. “I’m disappointed no one went with Highland Reel early. To leave a class horse alone on a loose lead, he made every-one pay.”

Teddy Grimthorpe, the racing manager for owner Juddmonte Farms, said Flint-shire will go to stud in Kentucky at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in 2017.

Found is also likely to go to Kentucky to be bred, O’Brien said. He said the final plans have not yet been made. She was as far back as 11th after a half-mile in the BC Turf and closed steadily to finish four lengths behind Highland Reel.

“She ran a super race,” jockey Ryan Moore said. “The winner is a good horse. When he’s allowed to go loose like that, he’s difficult to catch.”

Highland Reel, a colt by Galileo, is likely to start in the Hong Kong Vase on Dec. 11, O’Brien said. In 2015, Highland Reel won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park in his only appearance of the year in the United States, finished third in the $2.1 million Cox Plate in Australia in October, and won the Hong Kong Vase at 1 1/2 miles last December.

Highland Reel won the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July, his only win in seven previous starts this year. In his career, Highland Reel has won 7 of 19 starts and earned $7,300,647. There is more that can be accomplished – in the coming months and next year, Tabor said.

“The future for Highland Reel, I think, is very rosy,” Tabor said. “I think he’ll carry on racing and hopefully keeping the same form as he’s been this year.”

Champagne Room was largely over-looked prior to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and why not? With just a maiden victory from four starts, she was one of the least accomplished of the 12 starters in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Peter Eurton is glad, then, that races are run on the track and not on paper. Prominent from the start with Mario Gutierrez riding, Champagne Room shot to the lead turning for home and went on to a 33-1 stunner in the 33rd running of the $2 million BC Juvenile Fillies.

It was the first Breeders’ Cup victory for Eurton, who is based year-round on the Southern California circuit.

“This means a lot to me,” said Eurton, who trains Champagne Room for the locally based partnership of Ciglia Racing, Exline-Border, Gulliver Racing, Sharon Alesia, R. Christensen, and Taylor Legan. “I’m trying to hold it in. I’m pretty emotional about it.”

Valadorna closed late to finish three-quarters of a length behind Champagne Room, while American Gal, the 4-1 favorite, was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third. Daddys Lil Darling ran on late to be fourth, another length back.

“I had a perfect trip,” Gutierrez said. “She broke really sharp. I was able to settle behind the speed and when I asked her, she ran with all her heart.”

Champagne Room returned $69.20 as the second-longest shot in the field after finishing in 1:45.12 over a fast surface. A Kentucky-bred by Broken Vow, Cham-pagne Room won an Aug. 6 maiden race in her second career start, and then was third in the Del Mar Debutante and fourth in the Chandelier.

American Gal was expected to make the lead from her outside post, but it was her Bob Baffert stablemate, Noted and Quoted, who was in front into the first turn, with Champagne Room giving closest pursuit. American Gal went very wide into the first turn and momentarily trailed, but she steadily made up ground while looping the field to be third at the quarter pole.

From there, as Noted and Quoted faltered, Champagne Room suddenly drew off as Valadorna angled off the rail after getting a good inside trip near the back. Gutierrez kept Champagne Room to a steady drive with a right handed whip, allowing her to

stay safe from Valadorna and jockey Julien Leparoux.

“She was getting a little tired, but there wasn’t anyone catching her,” Eurton said.

“I had to wait a little bit on the turn and I think the winner got away from us,” said Leparoux. “She ran a big, big race.”

Queen’s Trust had only one victory in seven starts and on paper seemed a bit out of place in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

But trainer Michael Stoute knew his horse had legitimate excuses when placing in three Group 1 stakes in Europe, and he very much wanted to run in the Filly and Mare Turf. He just needed to convince owners Patricia and David Thompson that a transatlantic trip was the proper thing to do.

The Thompsons, who race and breed under the moniker Cheveley Park Stud, gave Stoute the green light, and Queen’s Trust, under Frankie Dettori, backed up her trainer’s confidence with a thrilling late run to nose out the favored Lady Eli in the $2 million Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita.

Lady Eli, trying to cap a storybook year as she overcame laminitis to make it back to Grade 1 form, finished second by a length over Avenge, the pacesetter.

The win was the third in this race for Stoute, who captured the Filly and Mare Turf with Dank (2013) and Islington (2003).

This was just the second win in eight career starts for Queen’s Trust, a 3-year-old daughter of Dansili. Stoute said she had trouble in her last three starts, including a runner-up finish to Minding in the Group 1 Nassau at Goodwood in July and in the British Champions at Ascot in October, where she finished third.

“Her form was solid, she had a lot of bad luck in running this year,” Stoute said. “She’s been a model of consistency; things just haven’t gone right for her on a couple of occasions.”

Stoute said he had to convince the

Thompsons to run in the Breeders’ Cup. In 2005, they owned Funfair, who broke down in the BC Mile at Belmont Park and had to be euthanized.

“They had a misfortune in the Breeders’ Cup a few years ago, and they were never keen to come back,” said Stoute, who did not train Funfair. “I’m delighted they did.”

Stoute wanted to come because he knew Queen’s Trust would appreciate firm ground and a fast pace. Avenge, under Flavien Prat, sped off to the lead and set fractions of 23.10 seconds, 46.16, and 1:10.11 for six furlongs while being prompted by Catch a Glimpse.

Queen’s Trust was in 10th position, initially just outside of Lady Eli and then behind Lady Eli down the backside.

Lady Eli, under Irad Ortiz Jr., was along the rail down the backside, got off the fence, split horses, and then got to the outside approaching the top of the stretch. Lady Eli set sail after Avenge and collared her inside the sixteenth pole, but Queen’s Trust, who emerged from behind horses at the three-sixteenths pole, ran down Lady Eli at the wire.

Queen’s Trust covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:57.75 and returned $18 to win.

“I wanted to get to her wheels; I didn’t get to her wheels until midturn,” Dettori said, referring to Lady Eli. “Once I got to her wheels, I knew I could get there.”

For Lady Eli, it was just her second loss in nine career starts. She had missed more than a year after developing laminitis in the summer of 2015. This year, she suffered her first defeat in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga before winning the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont.

Trainer Chad Brown credited Ortiz with getting Lady Eli out of a sticky spot early in the race, but he was naturally disappointed with the narrow loss.

“I’m disappointed with the result, I’m not disappointed in anything else about the race,” Brown said. “I’m glad everybody got to see her run her ‘A’ race. That’s horse racing, I’ve been on both sides of those photos. This time, we were on the wrong side of it.”

Lady Eli may not be done yet. Though she was cataloged in Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale, she was withdrawn and her owners said she would race again next year.

“I don’t see any reason why she shouldn’t run next year,” Brown said. “She’s lightly raced, and she’s doing terrific.”

When Tourist ran in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita, he nearly took a tour of the parking lot on the first turn. Breaking from post 13, he was pushed even farther out around the bend, his race over barely after it had started. Two years later, Tourist and jockey Joel Rosario got the dream vacation package, sailing along inside and in the clear over the lightning-fast Santa Anita grass course and on to victory in the $2 million Mile.

“We went from having the worst trip you can imagine to having the best trip,” said Bill Mott, who won the Mile for the first time in his Hall of Fame training career.

Future Hall of Famer Tepin, who won the 2015 Mile, finished a strong second, coming wide for a stretch rally but falling a half-length short of victory.

“I’m not disappointed,” said trainer Mark Casse. “We would’ve liked to have won, but she showed she’s still got it.”

Tepin’s owner, Robert Masterson, said no decision had yet been made on whether 5-year-old Tepin would continue her racing career. “We still have some things to talk about,” Masterson said.

Midnight Storm, who tracked What a View’s furious pace, held gamely for third, a neck in front of late-running Ironicus, who in turn was a neck better than pace-tracking Miss Temple City.

Tourist ran the mile in 1:31.71, the fast-est Mile in Breeders’ Cup history, and paid $26.80 to win. A son of Tiznow and the Unbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Melody, Tourist was bred by WinStar Farm, which owns him with Adam Wachtel and Gary Barber. Elliott Walden, WinStar’s chief executive, said Tourist probably had run his last race.

“We’re going to talk about it, but when you win a race like that against the best milers in the world, and he’s 5 years old, he’ll probably go off to stud,” Walden said.

Tourist once had been a free-wheeling, front-running type, but over time he has learned to ration his speed, and after breaking alertly from post 5, he settled into a midpack racing along the inside. What a View, sent hard from post 1, laid down electric splits of 21.81 seconds for his first quarter-mile and 44.61 to the half, with Midnight Storm two to four lengths behind, his nearest pursuer.

“I thought we might be a little closer, but they were flying on the lead,” Rosario said. “I was just trying to stay there and save some ground, trying not to stop him. I kind of had to grab him just a little bit before turning for home, but after that, I got a clean run.”

Tourist burst past a tired What a View, pushed resolutely forward, overtook Midnight Storm in the final half-furlong, and finished resolutely while probably never even seeing Tepin several paths to his outside.

“I don’t think he was giving an inch,” Mott said. “The pedal was to the metal, and I think he was still giving it when he approached the wire.”

Tepin was giving her all, too, and the filly who beat her in the First Lady last month at Keeneland, Photo Call, beat only one horse in the Mile. “Tepin ran her eyeballs out,” said jockey Julien Leparoux. “She ran a great race. She’s been wonderful for us the whole year, done everything almost perfect.”

Almost, but not quite. No doubt, Tepin has had the better career than Tourist, though Tourist has been unlucky in his own right many times, encountering unsuitable turf conditions, dealing with nagging injuries and tough trips in big races. Reverse the trips Saturday, and maybe Tepin wins.

“I always said it’s the toughest race on the Breeders’ Cup card to win,” said Mott, who this time had good fortune on his side.

A champion mare produced a storybook ending to an amazing five-year career on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Beholder, the 6-year-old making her 26th and final start in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff, wore down the previously undefeated Songbird in a stretch-long street fight to win by a nose in a race for the ages.

There were tears everywhere in the Santa Anita winner’s circle, where trainer Richard Mandella, jockey Gary Stevens, and owner B. Wayne Hughes celebrated the win by Beholder ($8.60). It was her third Breeders’ Cup win, 11th Grade 1 victory, and also her swan song.

“It’s probably the most emotional [win] of my career, knowing this was her last race,” Stevens said immediately afterward. “I just asked Mr. Hughes if he has a paddock for me next to her. I probably should be getting on the plane with her and walking out right now.”

Beholder will retire to become a brood-mare at Hughes’s Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky, and there was no second-guess-ing by Hughes after the race.

“I think it’s time for her to go the normal route to go back to Kentucky and not having to have Richard and Gary to deal with,” Hughes said.

It was good-natured kidding delivered by a man with utmost appreciation for his

trainer and rider.“I don’t think I’ll ever have another horse

like this, and so I’m very grateful to have been a part of it,” Hughes said. “I mean, I really compliment Richard. I don’t know of any trainer that could have taken a horse for six years and done what he’s done. But Gary has been a big part of it.”

Beholder won at least one Grade 1 race in each of the past five years and was most effective utilizing the stalking style she employed in the Distaff.

The race unfolded as expected, with Songbird and jockey Mike Smith shooting to the front. Stevens said Beholder “broke sharper than she ever has in her career,” but when I’m a Chatterbox went up inside to press Songbird, Stevens was happy to allow Beholder to sit third on the outside.

The fractions were modest. Songbird went the opening half-mile in 47.16 seconds and six furlongs in 1:11.14. Nearing the quarter pole, Beholder ranged outside Songbird. From the quarter pole to the wire, Stevens said, “it was a street fight.”

Songbird, a 3-year-old facing older fillies and mares for the first time after winning her first 11 starts, refused to surrender. “I didn’t know how much fight Songbird had in her,” Stevens said. “I found out. I put her away three times down the stretch.”

Beholder raced outside, Songbird battled along the rail, and the two dueled to the wire. Stevens thought he had it won late. “I saw the purple with all the banners [on the rail] down the stretch, and said … ‘We’re close!’ ”

The margin was a nose; even-money favorite Songbird finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of Forever Unbridled. Stellar Wind, the 5-2 second choice, finished fourth, followed by I’m a Chatterbox, Curalina, and Land over Sea.

Corona Del Inca, a Breeders’ Cup Chal-lenge winner making her first start since May in Argentina, was injured and eutha-nized. She sustained a condylar fracture of her right foreleg, a sesamoid fracture, and fractured the first pastern bone.

Distaff winner Beholder goes out like the three-time champion she already is. Beholder retires having won 18 races and $6,156,600.

As for Songbird, her future is bright. She will continue to race next year at age 4 for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and owner Rick Porter.

Hollendorfer said he “could never be disappointed with Songbird. She ran great, just the other horse ran a little better.”

Beholder did it throughout her career. She won the BC Juvenile Fillies in 2012,

the BC Distaff in 2013, and won at least one Grade 1 for five years running.

“I’ve never seen a racehorse stay in peak form [that long],” Stevens said. “I know I’ll never sit on another one like her. In a way, I wonder, should I be walking out too? But I have [Saturday] to ride. Who knows what lies beyond that?”

As he watched the horses run away from the gate in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, trainer Mark Casse said he couldn’t find his horse.

“Did he come out?” wondered Casse, who was not looking toward the front of the 11-horse field.

Indeed, Classic Empire came out running and put himself right into the race in the early stages of the Juvenile. After stalking Syndergaard for nearly six furlongs, Clas-sic Empire took the lead midway on the far turn, opened up a clear advantage turning for home, then held off a late bid from Not This Time to win the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by a neck at Santa Anita.

It was 7 1/2 lengths farther back to Prac-tical Joke in third.

The win was the fourth from five starts for Classic Empire and most likely earned him champion 2-year-old male honors. Twenty-four of the previous 32 Juvenile winners were crowned champion, and Classic Empire’s résumé includes victo-ries in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity and Grade 3 Bashford Manor.

Classic Empire’s only loss was basically a nonstart. He wheeled at the start of the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga, unseating jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., and ran off for 10 yards. He was uninjured.

It was after that race that Casse put blinkers on Classic Empire. He won the Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland leading up to the Juvenile.

When Casse looked at the field for the

Juvenile, he anticipated there being three or four speed horses whom Classic Empire would stalk. He didn’t anticipate being a half-length off Syndergaard through a quarter in 23.05 seconds and a half-mile in 46.60. Neither did winning rider Julien Leparoux.

“I didn’t expect to be where I was, to be honest,” said Leparoux, who noted that there were speed horses directly to his inside and outside. “I had to break at least good and ask him away from there. I really thought they were going to clear me and I was going to sit third or fourth. By the first turn, I was happy where I was, that’s for sure.”

Classic Empire took the lead just before they ran six furlongs, which was timed in 1:10.48. Classic Empire opened up, and Casse thought Classic Empire was going to win by three or four lengths. But Not This Time, the 5-2 favorite coming off an 8 3/4-length victory in the Iroquois Stakes, had advanced from sixth to third and was on the move under Robby Albarado.

Not This Time kept grinding away but could not catch Classic Empire.

Classic Empire, a son of Pioneerof the Nile – the same sire as 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah – covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.60 and returned $11 as the second choice. He is owned by John Oxley, who purchased Classic Empire for $475,000 at the Keeneland yearling sale.

Oxley campaigned 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, who died two weeks ago due to complications from surgery to repair a ruptured intestine.

“Now we have another one maybe,” Oxley said. “We’d like to think he might replace him down the road.”

Trainer Dale Romans had been tout-ing Not This Time as potentially the best horse he’s ever trained. But Not This Time isn’t all there yet mentally, according to Albarado.

“He don’t have it serious where he knows exactly what to do, that’s the good part about it,” Albarado said. “He wasn’t all out today, there’s more to him. He’s an improv-ing horse, fourth start, I look for him in the future. He’s going to be a nice horse next year.”

“It’s going to be a fun spring,” Romans said.

Both Classic Empire and Not This Time are expected to winter in south Florida.

Trainer Bob Baffert appeared to be hold-ing a pretty strong hand when entries were drawn for the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint, with two of the top contenders in the field, including potential favorite Lord Nelson. But Baffert’s chances of winning his fifth Sprint title suffered a major blow several days later when he was compelled to scratch Lord Nelson due to an infection.

Fortunately for Baffert, his “other” Sprint candidate was the speedy and stead-ily improving 3-year-old Drefong, who proved he was more than a backup for Lord Nelson by outdueling 8-5 favorite Maso-chistic on the lead before edging away to an impressive 1 1/4-length victory in the Sprint under jockey Martin Garcia.

Drefong, a son of Gio Ponti, is owned by the Baoma Corp. He completed six furlongs in 1:08.79 and paid $9.80. Garcia was a last-minute replacement for Drefong’s regular rider, Mike Smith, who opted to keep his regular seat aboard Masochistic.

Masochistic broke best, with Smith rating him just outside and off Drefong, who sped to a short lead nearest the rail after an opening quarter in 21.41 seconds. Masochistic gained a short advantage on the turn and was seemingly going easi-est at that point, but Drefong would not be denied, responding to some vigorous urging to dispose of Masochistic nearing midstretch before edging clear at the end.

Mind Your Biscuits, last, as expected, in the run down the backstretch, finished best of all, falling just a nose short of catch-ing Masochistic for second.

A. P. Indian had his six-race win streak come to an end after finishing fourth, 4 1/2 lengths behind the winner. He was followed by Limousine Liberal, a tiring Delta Bluesman, and Noholdingback Bear, who was eased to the wire after having his best chances compromised by a slow start. Like Lord Nelson, Joking was scratched this week.

“It really hurt losing Lord Nelson this week,” Baffert said. “He was doing so well, and it would have been nice to have him in here. But Drefong, he was ready to go. And it was a great time for Martin [Garcia] to reunite with me.”

Baffert and Garcia parted ways in April, just prior to the Kentucky Derby, before mending fences last week.

“Drefong broke with him [Masochis-

tic], and Martin just let him ease up there the first part of it,” said Baffert. “When I saw the fractions, 21 and a tick, I thought that was manageable. Good horses could handle it.

“I could see Masochistic was bringing his ‘A’ game, I knew it was going to be a battle. About the three-eighths pole, it looked like Masochistic was going to have the edge on us. But this little horse, when the running started, he just brought it, and at the eighth pole, he showed the will he has to win.”

Baffert won the Sprint for the first time with Thirty Slews in 1993. He also won the race with Midnight Lute in 2007 and 2008 and with Secret Circle in 2013.

“Thirty Slews was the first horse I ever bought, for $30,000, and when he won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Gulfstream Park, it was so exciting, I thought I’d reached the pinnacle of my career,” Baffert said. “I never had that feeling again until I won the Kentucky Derby. And it’s still a thrill to win any Breeders’ Cup race because there’s so much on the line, not only the money, but championships as well. Hopefully, this will put Drefong in the conversation.”

Garcia said he had no choice but to put Drefong on the lead after breaking from post 2.

“As fast as I was going, he was running easy,” Garcia said. “It looked like that other horse [Masochistic] outside went past us, and I just asked my horse a little bit, and he responded.”

Smith, who had ridden Drefong to three straight easy wins, including the Grade 1 King’s Bishop, said he thought he had control of the race on the turn.

“When we hit the turn, we were looking good, sitting perfect, but I know Drefong, he’s a tough son of a gun,” Smith said. “He doesn’t stop. That’s why I tried to put him away over there on the turn. I thought I did, too, and here he comes again.”

Ian Kruljac has won four races as a trainer, all with Finest City. The latest and easily the most important victory came when Finest City ran the race of her life – as Kruljac had promised – when pulling an 8-1 upset in the $1 million Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita.

Always in the hunt after breaking sharply from post 12 in the field of 13, Finest City and jockey Mike Smith held off the oncoming Wavell Avenue to prevail by three-quarters of a length. Paulassilverlin-ing was third, another 1 1/4 lengths back, with Tara’s Tango nailing By the Moon for fourth, another three-quarters of a length behind.

Finest City returned $19.40 after finish-ing the seven-furlong distance in 1:22.37 over a fast track. A 4-year-old Pennsylva-nia-bred daughter of City Zip, Finest City is owned by the Seltzer Thoroughbreds of Tyler and Wayne Seltzer.

The pace was hotly contested in the Filly and Mare Sprint, with Gloryzapper hold-ing a tenuous lead over Paulassilverlining and Finest City leaving the half-mile pole, and By the Moon poised to strike from in behind that line. Approaching the quarter pole, Wavell Avenue and jockey Joel Rosa-rio were well under way with a big loop-ing move, and by the eighth pole, the race had boiled down to Smith going to work on Finest City to fend off Wavell Avenue.

Kruljac, 28, dropped out of the Race-track Industry Program at the University of Arizona as a senior when returning to his racetrack roots. His father, Eric, and uncle, Jay, are veterans of the California and Arizona circuits, and Ian has been a licensed trainer for only a little more than a year. Leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, Kruljac said he and the Seltzers had eyed the Filly and Mare Sprint with Finest City for months despite the fact she had run at a variety of distances and on both dirt and turf. Given the wide-open nature of this race – the favorite, Carina Mia, was a tepid 3-1 – Kruljac was quietly confident in the days approaching the race, saying: “She’s running, not me.”

“She sends herself out of there and Mike chose not to take her back,” Kruljac said in the race aftermath. “It was absolutely perfect. She has a high cruising speed and I could tell he was in hand. It is just such an honor to compete with all these top train-ers and have a top filly.”

“The old handicapping angle of ‘turf to dirt’ and a long turf race to middle-distance sprint is really a good way to get a horse ready for a race like this,” Smith said. “They learn to relax a little better and

it’s easier on them.”Last year at Keeneland, Wavell Avenue

and Rosario won the BC Filly and Mare Sprint at 10-1. Dismissed at 13-1 this time, she was bidding to become the second two-time winner in the 10-year history of this race, following Groupie Doll (2012-13).

New Money Honey is rapidly developing a diverse portfolio.

A 2-year-old filly, New Money Honey won her stakes debut and recorded her first victory in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes on a yielding course at Belmont on Oct. 2, her second career start. On Nov. 4, New Money Honey won her Grade 1 debut in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on a firm course at Santa Anita.

The win left owner Bob Edwards and trainer Chad Brown looking forward to longer turf races for 3-year-old fillies in 2017 and a possible try in a major stakes on dirt in the spring in the buildup to the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 5.

“I think the sky is the limit,” Brown said. “A mile is as short as she wants to run. I think this filly has an unbelievable future.

“It’s not out of the question that we give her a spin on the dirt to see how she handles it before the Kentucky Oaks.”

New Money Honey ($15) had no trou-ble with a firm course in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf. Ridden by Javier Castellano, New Money Honey was fifth early and raced in fourth place on the backstretch, about five lengths behind Lull, who set a quick pace of 22.35 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 45.75 for a half-mile.

New Money Honey rallied three wide on the turn and was fourth in early stretch. She closed steadily through the stretch to take the lead in the final furlong. New Money Honey was timed in 1:34.01. She finished a half-length in front of Coasted, who closed from last in the field of 14.

Cavale Doree, who was 10th with a quar-ter-mile remaining, rallied to finish third, 1 1/2 lengths behind New Money Honey.

Lull, who led by as much as 3 1/2 lengths on the backstretch, held fourth and was followed by Rymska, La Coronel, La Force, Sweeping Paddy, Roly Poly, Spain Burg, Intricately, Happy Mesa, Madam Dancealot and Hydrangea.

La Coronel, the winner of the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 12, was the 4-1 favorite. She was 13th early and raced wide throughout.

Coasted closed well on the rail in the stretch. The narrow loss was a frustration for trainer Leah Gyarmati.

“She had a good bit of trouble,” Gyarmati said. “I think that’s why she didn’t win. I was hoping she’d break and be a little closer.”

The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf was the first start in the United States for Cavale Doree, who previously raced in France. Jockey Flavien Prat said the tight track at Santa Anita, compared to French racecourses, caught Cavale Doree by surprise.

“She didn’t break very fast,” Prat said. “I had to put her in the race. She had a little bit of trouble on the turn. On the back-stretch, she made a nice move.”

New Money Honey gave Brown his third win in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf. He won the race in 2014 with Lady Eli at Santa Anita. Brown and Castellano agreed that New Money Honey would be best served by racing as a stalker.

“I like the way she did it,” Castellano said. “I had a lot of confidence with my filly. This filly is amazing. She gave me a power-ful move.”

New Money Honey was purchased for $450,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale. She has earned $686,600 for Edwards, of Boca Raton, Fla.

14—OSCAR PERFORMANCE (See above). Best Beyer: 93. 15—f., by Point of Entry. 16—c., by Ghostzapper. 17—No report.

Oscar Performance acted like a good horse from the time he was broken to saddle, and on Nov. 4, he was the leading man in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juve-nile Turf, tracking the pacesetting Wella-

bled, bursting to the front, and going on to a 1 1/4-length win over Lancaster Bomber and a tough-luck Good Samaritan.

It was a first Breeders’ Cup victory for both trainer Brian Lynch and jockey Jose Ortiz. “Just absolutely thrilled as I am for my first Breeders’ Cup, I’m thrilled to have done it with Jose,” Lynch said.

Oscar Performance, by Kitten’s Joy and out of the Theatrical mare Devine Actress, had shown ability from the time he was broken as a yearling in Florida by Barry Berkelhammer.

“He came up to me and said, ‘You’ve got one special horse,’ and that was a long time ago,” said John Amerman, who owns Oscar Performance with his wife, Jerry, Oscar Performance’s breeder.

Oscar Performance needed one race to show his talent, however, finishing fifth in a somewhat-troubled debut July 23 at Sara-toga. “We probably did expect a little more of him first time out,” Lynch said. “He was a victim of circumstance. But he damn sure was ready second time out.”

Indeed, Oscar Performance won his second start, a Saratoga turf-route maiden, by more than 10 lengths, and he followed that with a six-length win in the Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont, his last race before the Juvenile Turf. Oscar Performance led all the way in both races, but Lynch believed his horse would rate off the pace, and with the fast stretch-out sprinter Wellabled in the field, Ortiz was able to settle into a perfect pressing trip. As Wellabled set frac-tions of 22.30 seconds for the first quarter-mile and 45.88 to the half, Ortiz and Oscar Performance were perched just outside, waiting to pounce.

“Me and Brian talked about it, and it worked just like we wanted to,” said Ortiz, who is in the midst of a breakout season. “When I passed the half-mile going to the three-eighths pole, I felt like I had a lot of horse under me. I just waited a little more because no one was pressing me. I knew the horse in front of me was a sprinter. I knew sooner or later he’d come back to me.”

Oscar Performance had the lead turn-ing for home, and despite the fast pace, he rattled off a final quarter-mile in 23.84 seconds, too good for anyone to catch him. He stopped the timer in 1:33.28 for one mile on firm turf and paid $15.20 to win.

Lancaster Bomber got second by a neck over Good Samaritan.

Lancaster Bomber, in from Ireland for trainer Aidan O’Brien, broke decently from post 1 but lacked the pace to get up into the pocket before the first turn and wound up getting shuffled back into midpack. He

launched a bid between horses past the three-furlong pole and finished well for his second straight runner-up finish in a top-level race.

“He ran a great race,” said jockey Seamie Heffernan. “With a little bit more luck, I think I’m as good as the winner. He’s a bit inexperienced. I was drawn 1, and I wasn’t as quick away as the American horses.”

Good Samaritan surely ran at least as well as the winner in finishing third. Breaking from post 11 under Joel Rosario, he was away decently and tucked over in the tail third of the field, traveling decently into the first turn, but J. S. Choice came out in front of him just as Good Samaritan was leaning into the bend, and Good Samaritan (as with Rodaini outside him) lost his grip on the turn, floating very wide, dropping to the back of the field, and losing precious position. Caught wide on the second turn, he came with a long, sustained bid in a very encouraging performance.

As for the winner, who races with-out Lasix, he has made his last start of 2016, said Lynch, and with a turf pedi-gree, there’s no thought of trying him on dirt. A trip to Royal Ascot next year was mentioned as a possibility, but for now, a winter break looms.

Obviously, an 8-year-old gelding who made his U.S. debut more than four years ago, showed off his longevity in the Breed-ers’ Cup Turf Sprint.

Running in a Breeders’ Cup race for the fifth straight year but first in the Turf Sprint, Obviously ($9.60) led virtually gate

to wire in the $1 million race, winning by a nose over Om and giving trainer Phil D’Amato and jockey Flavien Prat each their first Breeders’ Cup win.

D’Amato, 40, was longtime assistant to trainer Mike Mitchell, who developed Obvi-ously from allowance sprinter in 2012 to Grade 1-winning turf miler before Mitchell died at age 66 in spring 2015, having never won a Breeders’ Cup race.

D’Amato took over for Mitchell, expanded the stable into a California powerhouse, and frequently acknowledges Mitchell’s influence. Obviously might be trained by D’Amato, but it was a mutual achievement with his former boss.

“To me, it couldn’t have been more special than winning the Breeders’ Cup with this horse. It’s like we both finally won our Breeders’ Cup,” D’Amato said. “Mike campaigned him to a couple of Group 1 victories, and passed the baton on to me with this guy, and here I am with the Breeders’ Cup win. Pretty amazing.”

Prat, 24, was riding Obviously for the first time. He was a teenager in Europe when Obviously made his U.S. debut. Prat has since relocated to Southern California, where he is one of the circuit’s top riders.

As for Obviously, he keeps on keeping on. D’Amato was among the scouts Mitch-ell sent to England in late 2011 to purchase horses for owners Tony Fanticola and Joe Scardino. Obviously had won two of three starts in Ireland prior to being purchased, and in the U.S. he gradually improved.

In summer 2012 he stretched out and became a front-running terror at one mile. He won eight graded stakes at a mile, including two Grade 1s, but every time he ran in the BC Mile, four straight years from 2012 to 2015, the same thing happened.

“We tried the Mile a bunch of times, and he kind of always got caught at the sixteenth pole,” D’Amato said, explaining the reason for cutting back to a sprint this year. “He had run on the hill with success, he had enough bottom.”

Shortening up after finishing third last out in a Grade 2 race at a mile, Obviously was quick to the lead under Prat in the Turf Sprint. “I was surprised to be on the lead that easy,” Prat said. “He relaxed really well … after that, I was gone.”

Obviously got a relatively easy open-ing quarter-mile in :21.41 on the downhill course, the half-mile in :43.08, opened up in the lane and won by a nose in 1:11.33.

The runner-up Om did not have the greatest of trips. He steadied at the break and was surprisingly last early. Jockey Gary Stevens lost his whip at the sixteenth

pole, and Om surged late to miss by a nose.“He got wiped out leaving the gate, which

he did to himself, and it was a tough beat,” Stevens said. “He broke completely side-ways from the gate and he had to overcome a lot. Almost got it done.”

Pure Sensation finished third after loom-ing a threat into the lane.

A gelding sired by Choisir, Obviously will continue to race into 2017, when he could try to equal the record of oldest Breeders’ Cup winner Calidoscopio, who won the 2012 BC Marathon at age 9.

Tamarkuz was fed a steady diet of one-turn races throughout his career, but in his 20th and perhaps final career start, he successfully stretched out around two turns to win the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, scoring an 11-1 upset over the likes of Dortmund, Gun Runner, and Runhappy.

The win was his first in a Grade 1 race, an important milestone for a 6-year-old horse owned by Sheikh Hamdan’s Shad-well Stable, where he will go to stud, perhaps quite soon. Though his connec-tions wouldn’t yet say he was retired, they acknowledged that this win will take Tamarkuz to a new level “when we take him home,” said Joe DeSantis, the assis-tant racing manager for Shadwell.

Tamarkuz was always intended for the Dirt Mile. Shadwell also had pre-entered Frosted in the Dirt Mile, as well as the Classic, and ended up putting him in

the Classic. Both are trained by Kiaran McLaughlin.

“Now all the media knows why Frosted is running in the Classic. We knew we had a horse who would win the Dirt Mile,” McLaughlin said, laughing.

Tamarkuz ($25.80), with Mike Smith aboard, rallied into a hot pace and drew away for a 3 1/2-length victory in the two-turn mile. Gun Runner held on for second by a neck over Accelerate.

The race’s disappointments were its early leaders. Dortmund, sent off at 3-5, pressed the pace of Runhappy but tired in the lane and was fourth. Runhappy, last year’s champion male sprinter, set a quick pace for a half-mile but began a steady fade on the final turn and finished eighth in the nine-horse field, his second straight disap-pointing race since returning from a nine-month layoff.

Tamarkuz was fractious behind the gate before the start, then raced wide while toward the rear for the first part of the race. The pace, though, was to his liking – an opening quarter in 22.45 seconds, a half in 45.37. He closed steadily at the weary front-runners, got the lead at midstretch and was never in danger thereafter. He completed one mile on the fast main track in 1:35.72.

“This is so satisfying,” DeSantis said. “This is what he needed – a two-turn race with speed.”

Gun Runner pressed the pace while three wide, got the best of Dortmund and Runhappy, but could not stave off Tamarkuz. Dortmund seemed to show the effects of three straight losses against Cali-fornia Chrome prior to this race.

Tamarkuz, by Speightstown, was bred in Kentucky by John Gunther, was purchased as a yearling for $325,000 by Shadwell, and began his career in England before heading to Dubai and then last year to the United States. In six prior starts for McLaughlin, he had never won, but in his last two starts, he had finished second in the seven-furlong Forego to A. P. Indian and second in the one-turn-mile Kelso to Anchor Down.

“He’d been second, fourth, a little unlucky,” McLaughlin said. “We knew he had potential.”

“We thought he was sitting on a big effort,” DeSantis said.

The victory was the third in a Breeders’ Cup race for McLaughlin, all with horses owned by Shadwell.

Tamarkuz has now eight times in 20 starts and earned $1,840,444.

“He’s very well balanced. He should make a nice stallion,” McLaughlin said.

DeSantis said his boss, Rick Nichols, and Sheikh Hamdan would decide whether Tamarkuz races again. If this was his final start, it was quite the curtain call.

The Grade 2 Nashua on opening day, Nov. 4, at Aqueduct looked like an inter-esting matchup between the impressive 2-year-old maiden winners Mo Town and Capitaine. But the complexion of the race changed when Mo Town was withdrawn following a minor physical setback, leav-ing Capitaine an odds-on favorite in a four-horse field.

And then the gates opened, and the $200,000 race took another turn.

Both 1-5 favorite Capitaine and 9-2 second choice Han Sense stumbled badly at the start. This allowed the maiden Hemsworth to make the lead while being pressed by Boys From Boston, the longest shot on the board at 7-1.

Hemsworth disposed of Boys from Boston on the far turn and drew clear, while Han Sense, along the inside, and Capitaine, three wide, tried to close the gap from several lengths back. They never could, and Hemsworth pulled away in the stretch under jockey Antonio Gallardo to win by 9 1/2 lengths.

Han Sense held second over Capitaine by 1 1/4 lengths. It was 15 1/2 lengths back to Boys From Boston.

Hemsworth, owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Tom Albertrani, paid $14 to win. With $38,000 of the $54,000 place pool wagered on Capitaine, Hemsworth returned $11.20 to place. Han Sense paid $6.50 to place. There was no show wager-ing.

Hemsworth set fractions of 24.37, 47.94, and 1:12.85 en route to a final time of 1:38.70.

“The plan was not push him or hold him back, whatever he felt comfortable doing, it was fine,” Gallardo said. “Once I saw [Han Sense] stumble from the gate, I said ‘Okay, let’s go.’ It worked out good.”

Hemsworth, a son of Bernardini, had finished fourth in his two prior starts.

Roughly 20 minutes after Finest City scored an upset victory in the Breed-ers’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita after turning back from a pair of two-turn grass routes, Kiss to Remember repeated the same maneuver with success at Churchill Downs in the $200,000, Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes.

A Florida invader, Kiss to Remember relished a return to dirt in the Chilukki, and recorded the biggest victory of her career by gamely outlasting heavily favored Birdatthewire, who had appeared poised to run her down in midstretch.

Winning jockey Joe Rocco Jr. credited trainer Marty Wolfson for the prerace instructions he gave him by phone earlier in the day, in which Wolfson told him to settle her off the pace and to go to the lead entering the stretch.

That was how the race played out, with Kiss to Remember sitting just off paceset-ting Mayla, as that one set splits of 23.27 seconds, 47.58, and 1:10.84 in the one-turn mile race, before she pounced with a quar-ter of a mile remaining.

“When she can the take the lead about turning for home she’s usually very tough to beat,” Rocco said.

“I was very worried when [Birdat-thewire] came outside her, but I tried to keep riding strong and she kept running strong and thank God she got to the wire first.”

Birdatthewire, the lone Grade 1 winner in the field, finished well clear of the rest

of the field, three lengths in front of her next-closest pursuer, third-place Sweet-grass. Birdatthewire was a bit slow to switch leads, not doing so to midstretch, and though she surged late, it was not quite enough, falling a head short.

Kiss to Remember ($30.40), a 5-year-old daughter of Big Brown owned by Miller Racing, had won just one race in nine starts in 2016 prior to the Chilukki, scoring the victory in an allowance at Gulfstream Park on July 31. She covered a mile under the lights on a fast track in 1:35.80.

There’s something about Santa Anita and long-distance runners that brings out the best in trainer Brendan Walsh.

The Walsh-trained Scuba on Nov. 4 galloped to a 4 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 Marathon Stakes at Santa Anita. Two years ago, also at Santa Anita, Walsh won this same race with Cary Street.

“It’s nice to win it again; this is where you

want to be isn’t it?” Walsh said in the Santa Anita winner’s circle.

Walsh said he called on his experience with Cary Street when he decided to send Scuba on marathon distances after going shorter didn’t work. The Marathon win was Scuba’s third straight. He won the Grade 3 Greenwood Cup at 1 1/2 miles in Septem-ber at Parx Racing, and the Temperence Hill Stakes going 1 5/8 miles at Belmont in October, before Friday’s victory.

Walsh said after the Greenwood Cup that Scuba “just seemed like he got so much confidence from getting his head in front and he’s gotten better and better. Going into this, his last two works were unbeliev-able.”

Breaking from the rail under Kendrick Carmouche – who was riding his first dirt race ever at Santa Anita – Scuba scurried to the front, but was soon confronted by Hard Aces and Blue Tone. Scuba was actu-ally third for a few strides entering the far turn the first time, but Carmouche held his rail position.

Though the stretch the first time, Scuba was back on even terms with Hard Aces, who was being smooched to by Santiago Gonzalez, which got Scuba on the muscle, according to Carmouche.

“He was wanting to get on the muscle and wanted to go, I kept talking to him ‘easy, easy not yet, not yet,’ “ Carmouche said. “By the time we turned down the backside, he fell back into my hands and I knew it would be a race from there.”

Scuba opened his advantage at the three-eighths pole and was never seriously threatened from there to the wire. Hard Aces finished second by 1 1/2 lengths over Blue Tone.

Scuba, a 5-year-old gelding by Tapit, covered the 1 3/4 miles in 2:58.20 and returned $6 as the 2-1 favorite. Scuba is owned by the DARRS Inc. stable of David Ross.

“It’s been great with this team that we’ve had with this horse,” Ross said. “We finally found his niche. I can’t thank Brendan enough. Kendrick is such a patient rider, this is a race that requires patience. He just did a terrific job.”

Frank Conversation scored a dramatic win at 36-1 in the $201,725 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita, the final race on the 10-race Breeders’ Cup program. The person most surprised by the upset may have been trainer Doug O’Neill.

“I thought for him to win would be a stretch,” O’Neill said.

Frank Conversation ($75.80) closed from eighth in the final quarter-mile to win by a half-length over 7-2 Free Rose. Black-jackcat finished third. Free Rose and Blackjackcat were part of a quick pace and stayed on well in the final furlong.

The Grade 2 Twilight Derby was the first stakes win on turf for Frank Conversation, who races for Paul and Zillah Reddam. O’Neill paid tribute to jockey Mario Gutier-rez for setting up Frank Conversation to rally wide.

“He got him to settle in a perfect spot, and he responded well,” O’Neill said. “Credit to Mario.”

Frank Conversation ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:46.81.

Free Rose, the winner of the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap and Grade 2 Del Mar Derby during the summer, set early fractions of 22.54 seconds for a quarter-mile and 45.88 for a half. Free Rose was unable to shake clear of Blackjackcat, the two racing within a half-length of each other throughout.

Oscar Nominated, the 2-1 favorite, finished fourth. Oscar Nominated is a full brother to Oscar Performance, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf earlier in the day.

Frank Conversation has had an eventful year. The colt won two stakes on the all-weather track at Golden Gate Fields last winter – the California Derby and Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby – before finishing last of seven in the $2 million UAE Derby on the Dubai World Cup program in March.

Frank Conversation was 13th in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes at Church-ill Downs on May 7 before being rested during the summer. In his comeback, Frank Conversation finished last of 10 in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile on Oct. 8 after being part of a torrid early pace.

Are You Kidding Me, Canada’s reigning champion older male runner, racked up his third graded stakes score of the Woodbine meet in the Autumn. Stakes on Nov. 6.

Are You Kidding Me ($3.70) rallied from third to vie for the lead with pacemaker Royal Son and Ghost Hunter on the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile route. Are You Kidding Me hit the front inside the quarter pole, and then drew clear in the stretch to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths over 21-1 outsider Oakton.

Freitag nosed out Ghost Hunter for third. Lukes Alley finished a wide fifth in his return from a long layoff, while Royal Son faded to trail the six-horse field.

The final time of 1:42.45 was just .23 of a second off the synthetic track record.

Alan Garcia rode Are You Kidding Me for trainer Roger Attfield, who said the 6-year-old son of Run Away and Hide had a foot problem leading up to the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes.

“He’s such a nice horse to be around and to train,” Attfield said. “I missed quite a bit of time with the horse with a quarter crack. My blacksmith kept asking me to walk him another two days, and I told him we can’t keep walking him. He put in a couple of nice works. A little bit of an easier time probably did him good, anyway. I went into the race with a lot of confidence.”

Are You Kidding Me races for the part-nership of Ronald Kirk, John Bates, and Michael Riordan.

Roy Lerman, the owner, trainer, and breeder of the 5-year-old mare Evidently, wasn’t sure if the addition of blinkers helped her win the Grade 3 Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct on Nov. 6, but he nevertheless was pleased with the result.

“She was more aggressive and into the bit,” Lerman said after Evidently closed up the rail to win the $200,000 Long Island. “I guess it worked, empirically anyway.”

The Long Island was the first time Evidently crossed the wire in front since July 2015 at Belmont Park. She was disqualified and placed fifth in that second-level optional-claiming race after bumping several times with a rival while between horses in the stretch.

“She was bumped pretty hard in that race and I thought ever since she seemed to hesitate a step before making her move,” Lerman said. “I thought the blinkers might help.”

Earring set an extremely slow pace in the 1 1/2-mile Long Island over firm turf while being tracked by Modernstone. Following fractions of 25.49 seconds, 52.75, 1:19.68, 1:46.62, and 2:13.12, Earring dug in for the stretch run but just failed to last after a final quarter-mile in a quick 21.38 seconds.

Evidently, ridden by Antonio Gallardo, saved ground near the back of the nine-horse field and then stayed to the rail for the stretch run. She just got up inside Earring.

It was a half-length back to Desiree Clary in third, and another head back to fourth-place finisher Swear By It. Itson-lyactingdad, the 6-5 favorite, stalked the early leaders, moved up three wide on the final turn but lacked the needed closing kick and dead-heated for fifth with Promo-tional. They were beaten three-quarters of a length.

Evidently paid $29.20 to win and was timed in 2:34.50. Gallardo has won eight races over the first three days of the Aque-duct meet to lead the rider standings.

Lerman used to operate Lambholm Farm in Middleburg, Va. He purchased

the Brookside Farm of Allen Paulson in Ocala, Fla., in 2000 and renamed it Lamb-holm South. Five years later, he bought the 1,800-acre Hobeau Farm of Jack Dreyfus and increased Lambholm South’s holdings.

Lerman currently has 12 horses in train-ing and spends half the year in Saratoga and the other half in Florida.

Lerman bought Evidently’s dam, Suppos-edly, at the Fasig-Tipton Timonium year-ling sale in 2000. Under his training, she won the Pearl Necklace Stakes and earned $150,000.

The Long Island was Evidently’s third win from 21 starts. She has now earned $259,000.

As the career of his star sprinter Stone-tastic is winding down, trainer Kelly Breen has another talented filly starting out. On Nov. 5 at Aqueduct, Miss Sky Warrior won her second straight race in the Grade 3 Tempted, a mile race for 2-year-old fillies.

Although Miss Sky Warrior has a long ways to go to reach the level of Stone- tastic, a multiple Grade 2 winner of $846,000, she is off to a good beginning. Miss Sky Warrior finished fourth to Breed-ers’ Cup Juvenile Fillies starter Yellow Agate in her debut, and then came back to win a maiden race at Parx Racing by seven lengths.

Miss Sky Warrior and jockey Paco Lopez pressed the early pace of Sky Gesture in the $200,000 Tempted. She took control of the race nearing the stretch, and then held off the late run of Berned to win by three-quarters of a length.

“Paco said he held her as long as he could and then let her go,” Breen said. “I was a little surprised because she’s so kind in the morning but I guess after two races

she’s starting to get the knack of being a racehorse and wanting to go, go, go. In the stretch, she got in the front and got a little green but Paco said her stride never short-ened.”

Miss Sky Warrior races for the Arlene’s Sun Star Stable of Arlene London, who bred the daughter of First Samurai. Breen said he would discuss future plans with London and Miss Sky Warrior would likely either stay in New York for the winner or go to Florida.

Miss Sky Warrior pressed fractions of 23.73 seconds, 47.55, and 1:12.69 before drawing away to complete the mile in 1:38.62. She paid $6.20 as the favorite in the seven-horse field.

Berned, trained by Tom Albertrani, raced in last position early, checked behind a rival nearing the stretch, and then finished well to overtake Eloquent Riddle for second by 1 1/4 lengths. Eloquent Riddle was forwardly placed throughout. Sky Gesture tired to finish sixth.

Ice Festival ($21.50) ran the race of her life under a shrewd ride from David Moran to take the Maple Leaf on Nov. 5.

Moonlit Promise set honest fractions in the 10-furlong route, with Hot Kiss and Ice Festival in close proximity. Hot Kiss made the lead on the far turn, after Moran

angled Ice Festival off the rail into a three-wide position. Ice Festival wore down Hot Kiss in the drive while holding off a wide-closing Goodyearforroses to score by a head, in a time of 2:03.25.

Goodyearforroses finished another head back in third in the nine-horse field. The favored Strut the Course never challenged after acting up in the gate.

Ice Festival was the second stakes success on the card for Moran, who also took the River Memories on Shelbysmile. He said trainer Sid Attard loved her chances in the Grade 3 fixture.

“Sid was very confident,” Moran said. “He said she’d take a lot of beating. He said to get a nice position. He wanted her on the outside, so I got a lovely chance going down the backside to move her outside. She was very game the last eighth of a mile.”

Ice Festival, a 4-year-old daughter of Awesome Again, earned $90,000 in her first stakes victory for Stronach Stable, which doubled up on the card.
