Nothing in life is m o r e wonderful than faith,

the one great moving force that we can neither

A M E S S A G E F R O M OUR P R E S I D E N T FOR T H E NEW Y E A R

As we begin a new year it s e e m s appropriate to join other groups in the traditional custom

of examining the events of the past year and attempting to look in the crys ta l ball of the days ahead

It is e ssent ia l to see where we have been in order to plan soundly where we are going.

A year ago the Board of Direc tors of the N. C. League for Nursing set an opt imist ic goal to

double the m e m b e r s h i p . It was thought that decreased dues and better coordinated p r o g r a m s

brought such a goal within the rea lm of poss ibi l i ty . However, this d r e a m did not mater ia l i z e in

1 956,

In trying to think through s o m e of the reasons for the difficulty in recruiting new m e m b e r s

for the League , I pondered a bit about the stated purpose of the League and the extent to which that

purpose is being fulfi l led. The North Carol ina League for Nursing is a s e r v i c e - c e n t e r e d organiza

tion - s erv i ce to the community rather than s e r v i c e to the individual nurse . Is this one of the

points we m i s s when we try to recruit new m e m b e r s ? It is t ime to change the usual question we

ask when approached about m e m b e r s h i p in an organizat ion. Not "what can the League do for m e ? '

but "how can I contribute to better nursing s e r v i c e and education through m e m b e r s h i p in the

League ? "

W i l l you join your profess ional and non-nurse col leagues in working dil l igently in 1957

toward furthering p r o g r e s s in nursing s e r v i c e and nursing education in every hospital , school ,

public health agency, and h o m e ? T h e r e is room for al l of us . Ten dol lars f rom each individual

is a s m a l l investment in relation to the potential returns f r o m our concerted effort .

My w a r m wishes to al l for a success fu l and prosperous y e a r .

A REPORT ON RESEARCH

"Patterns of Psychiatric Nursing: A Survey of Psychiatric Nursing in North Carolina" is the

recently published report of a study co-sponsored by the North Carolina State Nurses ' Associat ion,

the North Carolina League for Nursing, and the University of North Carolina School of Nursing

under a grant from the American Nurses ' Foundation, Inc.

This study was the result of a meeting, in August 1 954, of the Committee to Study the Nursing

Needs of the Mentally 111 in North Carolina, a committee appointed by the Coordinating Council of

the NCSNA and the N C L N . Nurses and others will find this report most interesting as well as

instructive and helpful.

The appointment of Miss Mir iam Daughtry, as Assistant Supervisor, Trade and Industrial Education for Practical Nursing, has been announced by M r . Murray D. Thornburg, Supervisor, Department of Trade and Industrial Education in North Carolina. Miss Daughtry, who has done graduate study this past year, will help develop schools of practical nursing over the state.

M r . Thornburg has also announced that enrollment in practical nurse preparatory and extension classes sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industrial Education, local schools and hospitals, was 755 for the fiscal year 1955-56 . Of this number, 230 were enrolled in preparatory programs which include a twelve months' training period of four months of related study in the c las sroom and eight months of practice and related study in the hospital. Those completing this course are eligible for examination for l icensure as registered practical nurses . Extension c lasses conducted for practical nurses licensed by waiver or examination had an enrollment of 525 during the past year. Extension courses are offered for those practical nurses who desire related instruction which they were unable to secure prior to l icensure.

R E C R U I T M E N T BROCHURE REVISED

"Now Is The T ime -- Take Steps to Enter Nursing" is the title on the new 1956-57 brochure listing

all accredited schools of nursing in North Carolina. The Brochure, first published in the fall of

1 952, has been revised each year and, by popular demand, the need has increased from 3000 to

7000 copies each year. Assembled and prepared by the N . C . Board of Nurse Registration and

Nursing Education, the brochure is financially supported by the N C L N , NCSNA, and N C L P N A .

Copies of the brochure are distributed free of charge to prospective students, counselors , deans,

principals, doctors, col leges, schools of nursing, and interested groups.

This fall 1103 freshmen students entered 34 programs of professional nursing in North Carolina. Total enrollment in these schools was 2985 on September 30, 1 956 and of this number 2382 were in hospital schools and 603 in collegiate programs .

MEETING, COUNCIL OF M E M B E R AGENCIES B A C C A L A U R E A T E AND HIGHER D E G R E E PROGRAMS, NLN

At a meeting of the Council of Member Agencies for Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs held in Chicago, November 25 - 28, major issues confronting nursing educators were discussed. According to Miss Marion Wood and Miss Mary Walker Randolph who attended, the critical issues identified will form the basis for council program planning during the next year.

On November 25 and 26, the problems of graduate degree education for nurses were considered with concentrated study upon the establishment of guiding principles for the development of educational programs in nursing which lead to a master 's degree. These principles will be useful to universities either offering or planning to offer graduate programs and may later be used as criteria for accreditation. The Sub - committee on Graduate Education has been working on these principles for over a year.

The last two days were devoted to the preparation of a statement of beliefs concerning the purposes of baccalaureate education and professional nursing education. Consideration was given to the meaning of specialization in nursing and the educational level at which specialization should begin. Preparations for leadership were stressed.

Miss Wood, who is Professor of Nursing in Charge of the Undergraduate Program, and Miss Randolph, who is Professor of Nursing in Charge of the Graduate Program, UNC School of Nursing stated that the reports from both conference groups will probably be available for distribution by the end of February. Watch for the announcement in the NLN NEWS and the NURSING OUTLOOK.

F A C U L T Y A P P O I N T M E N T , GRADUATE CURRICULA UNC, SCHOOL OF NURSING

We welcome Miss Mary Walker Randolph to the state of North Carolina and to the faculty of the UNC School of Nursing. Miss Walker's appointment is of special interest to graduate nurses since she has joined the faculty as Professor of Nursing in Charge of Graduate Curricula.

She is all ready well known to many nurses in the state, having been on the faculty of Duke University School of Nursing in 1941 and 1942. Her experience includes a four year tour of duty in the U .S . A r m y , following which she was appointed to the faculty of the University of Virginia. Prior to joining the faculty of the UNC School of Nursing, Miss Walker was on the faculty of the University oJ California in Los Angeles .

As Professor of Nursing in Charge of the Graduate Curricula, Miss Walker is vitally interest ed in providing educational opportunities to meet our needs in the field of graduate professional education. M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T

On behalf of the newly elected Board of D irec tors and of f icers of the North Carol ina League For

Nurs ing, I extend greetings and our s incere thanks to each of you for the support and help you

have given in planning and carrying out the p r o g r a m s thus far . It is my privi lege in this i s sue to

espec ia l ly recognize the splendid contribution the f o r m e r Public Relations Commit tee made in

planning and editing the News Le t t er .

In the past we have used these pages to present the p r o g r a m s of the League and to keep you in

formed of the various projects undertaken. Rather than do that I would like to take this occas ion

to talk with you about s o m e of the needs and prob lems which the organization faces :

1. We are proud of the fact that our m e m b e r s h i p has reached 340 - the larges t in our h is tory .

Only a s m a l l percent of our m e m b e r s h i p is made up of allied profess ional or lay m e m b e r s , and

the proportion of profess ional nurses in staff positions is low. In view of our purposes as an

organization it is wel l to consider this fact . The object ives of the organization can be achieved

only through further increasing the m e m b e r s h i p in al l groups . If we bel ieve that increased

m e m b e r s h i p is a responsibi l i ty of all m e m b e r s , then let us f i rmly dedicate ourse lves to the task

of convincing persons interested in health s erv i ce for people that N C L N m e m b e r s h i p is an i m

portant avenue toward the achievement of our goal .

2. Fund raising and foundation support for League activit ies are vital concerns . In order to

secure funds f rom foundations and industry we must have sound l o n g - t e r m planning for continuity

of p r o g r a m s and s e r v i c e s to be given to the people of North Carol ina.

3. The promotion of agency m e m b e r s h i p s among schools of nursing, hospital nursing s e r v i c e s

and public health agencies is an area of activity that should rece ive our spec ia l attention during

these next two y e a r s .

4. Individual m e m b e r s h i p participation in at least one activity each year is a goal toward which

we should s tr ive . If there s e e m s to be no p r o g r a m designed to utilize your spec ia l ski l l , then

your active participation can come through sharing of nursing information with cit izens of the

community .

5. The importance of counseling in high school and community action on behalf of nursing c a r e e r s

promotion are responsibi l i t ies of the League . Act ive cit izen participation of League m e m b e r s

who are non-nurses could lead to greater succes s in this work. (Continued)

Nurs ing is the p r o f e s s i o n a l "hear t" of o u r p a t i e n t - c a r e - c e n t e r e d e f fo r t . Unfortunately, the demands of the " b o d y " , wh ich has been rap id ly g r o w i n g , can hardly be me t by a "hear t" of d i s p r o p o r t i o n a t e l y s m a l l s i z e - and of impa i r ed e f f i c i e n c y , at be s t , b e c a u s e of this g rowth . I n c r e a s e s in the n u m b e r of hosp i ta l b e d s , i n c r e a s e d tempo in a d m i s s i o n s and d i s c h a r g e s , i n c r e a s e s in t e c h n o l o g i c a l and sc i en t i f i c advances in patient c a r e - all have d i r e c t imp l i ca t i ons fo r the graduate nurse as she finds h e r s e l f e m p l o y e d in our hosp i ta l s and for the student nurse in what she needs to l ea rn and how she wi l l learn it. We need m o r e nursing p e r s o n n e l BUT we need to train them be t t e r .

One half of the $. 62 of e ach $1. 00 spent at Rex g o e s into nurs ing s a l a r i e s ; a l m o s t one half of our 553 p e r s o n n e l are m e m b e r s of the nurs ing t eam. So , to state that an admin i s t r a to r should be in te res ted in nurs ing is undoubtedly the unders ta tement of the yea r i f one r e c k o n s on ly with the c o l d , e c o n o m i c facts of patient c a r e which must include the inf luence this m a j o r s e g m e n t of p e r s o n n e l has on the ef f ic ient ut i l izat ion of ma te r i a l and t ime through training and p e r f o r m a n c e .

E a c h admin i s t r a to r would do we l l to run an EKG p e r i o d i c a l l y on his own hosp i t a l ' s "hear t" and then set about to make c o n s c i e n t i o u s ef for ts to i m p r o v e its health. il Council of State Leagues F o r Nursing is to provide a m e c h a n i s m

purpose perhaps one of the most significant and challenging aspects of

le report given by M r s . Marion Sheahan on the work of the National

is it applies to the Southern Region. The data presented in Nurses

s on even greater implication for us when it is translated in t erms of

l eg ion . A full report of this meeting will be given at the State Con

vention in Jviarcn.

As the nursing profess ion advances in stature and in status, it moves forward on the difficult

road to maturi ty . Many improvements are yet to be made , but s i zable p r o g r e s s is being made

in improvement of patient c a r e , education, accreditat ion, s a l a r i e s , securi ty , ethical codes and

legislation. T h e s e advantages may be credited very large ly to the leadership and activity of our

profess ional organizat ions . M o r e gains will follow as we all plan and sow and reap together to

meet the needs of the Southern region and our own state.

For mysel f - a personal wish that as we look to 1958 we will be ever mindful of our spec ia l

b less ings , the most precious of which is the opportunity of serving our Mas ter day by day

through serving o thers .
