CHAZY — Since 1982,staff at the William H. Min-er Agriculture Research In-stitute have been teachingfifth-graders the basics ofagriculture in the commu-nity. And, from June 8-10,nearly 500 students fromeight different schools inthe county were intro-duced to “Farm Days forFifth-Graders.”

“Fifth-graders are a kindof funny age to work withbecause they’re still will-ing to ask questions,” saidWanda Emerich, dairy out-reach coordinator for theinstitute. “They tend tohave a little bit more back-ground to understandwhat we’re talking about. So, we decided to focus onfifth grade.”

Emerich, who has been working with the program since 1983, saidthe students tour eight different stations throughout the institute, from horse behavior and care, to field equipment, to cows.

“[The main goal is] to expose the students to agriculture as a part

of our community and to showstudents where milk comesfrom, what kind of technologyand equipment is used in pro-ducing milk,” said Emerich.“Also, where horses fit intothat farming community.”

Emerich said one of themain reasons they focus on thecare and behavior of horses isbecause of the age group theyare working with.

“When they get to be about12, a lot of kids want to have ahorse,” Emerich said. “So, wewant to teach them it’s morethan just riding the horse.”

Emerich has found one ofthe reasons it is so importantfor the fifth grade classes totake part in Farm Days is tohelp them better understandthe community, which is soagriculturally-based.

“Hopefully, it gets them alittle bit curious about nutri-tion and dairy research,” she

said. This year, students from Rouses Point, Cumberland Head, Saranac,

Morrisonville, Momot, Mooers, Northeastern Adirondack, andChazy elementary schools took part in Farm Days for Fifth-Graders.

CADYVILLE — When StephanieMaynard thinks about her mother, thelate Rose Rascoe-Maynard, she re-members her as a person who madeyou feel good to be around. And,that’s how she wants others to re-member her, too.

Maynard and her sister, Andrea, lost their mother in part of what wasdeemed a murder-suicide in March. The two have been looking for a wayto help them cope with their loss, saidMaynard, and, through their pain, they created an event they feel will dojust that — the first annual Run forRosie.

“She was always a runner in highschool and it was something she gotback into later in her life,” explainedMaynard. “She loved to run in thewoods. It was relaxing for her.”

Rascoe-Maynard would find con-tentment running through the trailsof Cadyville Recreation Park, which is thereason why Maynard and her sister wantedto host Run for Rosie at the park.

“She just loved it out there,” said May-nard. “It was where her escape was.”

The event, which will be held Saturday,June 26, is on a date that also has specialmeaning.

“It’s on her birthday,” said Maynard. It’s also the first one her family will cele-

brate since her mother ’s passing, shesaid.

“Having all our family and friendsaround on her birthday is really going tohelp us,” said Maynard.

Run for Rosie will also extend beyondhelping Rascoe-Maynard’s friends andfamily cope with their loss. It will helpraise money for the Rose Rascoe-May-nard Memorial Scholarship Fund, whichhas been established at Seton CatholicCentral School. Beginning next year, thefund will give a graduating student mon-ey for college in Rascoe-Maynard’s mem-ory.

“That’s why I’m hoping it’s a goodturnout,” said Maynard.

“We don’t want people to rememberour family because of this tragedy,” shecontinued. “We would rather turn it intoa positive thing and give back. My moth-er volunteered her time throughout herwhole life and it’s just right we give backto Seton Catholic with this scholarshipbecause it was such a big part of her life.”

Run for Rosie will begin next Saturdaywith registration at 12 p.m. and a 5-kilo-

meter race, 1-mile race and 1-mile walk tobegin at 1 p.m. Registration is $10, with thefirst 150 registrants to receive a free T-shirt.

Many seniors sufferfrom sleep disor-ders, or insomnia,

according to Caregiver.com. Itis estimated that as many as 30percent of the elderly popula-tion experience apnea, dis-rupted sleep patterns, andearly waking. If insomnia con-tinues for too long, seniorsmay become depressed andtheir general health may suf-fer. Insomnia has many caus-es, including chronic pain, anxiety, medications, andlifestyle changes. Caregivers may need to con-sider a number of approaches to the insomniaproblem:

• Check to see if any medications list “dif-ficulty falling asleep” as a side effect. If so,discuss with your loved one’s health care pro-fessional whether another medication can besubstituted.

• Limit eating and drinking before bedtime,so that bathroom trips will be less frequent.

• Try to maintain a routine: get up at thesame time every day and go to bed at the sametime every evening.

• Limit caffeine intake in the afternoon orevening.

• Limit or eliminate smoking, which cancause sleep-disrupting breathing problems.

• Try to incorporate regular exercise into

their routine- even a short dai-ly walk can improve sleep pat-terns.

• Some seniors find televi-sion too upsetting- encouragethem to read a book to relax be-fore bed.

• Turn off the phone in theirroom and keep the room dark.

• Try not to get upset or agi-tated when sleep disruptionsoccur- this may exacerbate theproblem.

• Try to create a stress-freeenvironment before bedtime-

engage in pleasant conversations involvinghappy topics.

• Treat the sleep-disorder solution as a teameffort. Encourage their input and opinions.

• Resist the urge to use over-the-countersleep aids. These may provide temporary re-lief but when used for too long, the body willbuild a resistance to them.

Insomnia and caregivingTekkie Fathers Day giftsWhat are you

getting dearold dad this

year for Father's Day? Ifdad travels a lot, perhapsa GPS unit could be agood choice. There aremany different kinds in-cluding apps for smartphones along with dedi-cated devices and so-called “connected” de-vices.

GPS via smart phone issimple; users must al-ready have the smart phone and needonly download the app. Many smartphones have a number of apps availablewith some offering hands-free, voicenavigation. The good thing about smartphone based GPS is people usually al-ways have their phone. A bad thing ishaving the screen constantly on willdrain the battery more quickly.

Dedicated devices are the ones mostpeople think of when someone mentionsGPS. They work very well having intu-itive, larger interfaces but they also costmore than just a smart phone app. Manydedicated devices are updated in twomain steps. Updates are downloaded toa PC and then transferred to the device. That’s more work than downloading an

app but, the reality is, theunit may need to only beupdated once or twiceduring its life time de-pending on the travelhabits of the user. Dedi-cated devices have comedown in price consider-ably in the last few years.I recently bought one forunder a hundred bucks.

Connected devices arejust like a dedicated de-vice except they offermore information for the

user. Where dedicated devices only re-ceive data, connected devices can initi-ate data requests. That makes reports forweather, traffic, fuel prices, etc. instant-ly available. More sophisticated ones canpull up flight information, movie times, and perform Google searches for nearbypoints of interest. The biggest drawbackfor connected devices is the cost, whichis more initially and typically requires amonthly subscription of $10 to $15.

Last summer, a Platts-burgh home gardenercontacted Cornell Coop-

erative Extension regarding aninsect problem in garlic. Surpris-ingly, the insect was identified bythe USDA as leek moth (Acrolepi-opsis assectella). This is the firstreport of this insect in the conti-nental United States.

Since the first report of leekmoth, this pest has been reportedin several other Plattsburgh areagardens both last year and thisyear. While most insects stayaway from onions and garlic, leek moth is aknown pest of all Allium crops, including leek, onion, chives, green onion, shallot, garlic, ele-phant garlic, etc. and is considered a seriouspest of these crops. The leek moth is native toEurope but can now be found in Asia, Africa, and North America. The first North Americanfind of leek moth occurred in 1993 in OntarioCanada.

While leeks are the preferred host, all Alli-um crops will be attacked. The larvae (or cater-pillars) cause significant damage to onions bytunneling mines into the leaf tissue causingdistortion, stunted growth, and secondary bac-terial and fungal infections. While most of thefeeding occurs in the leaves, feeding occasion-ally occurs in the bulbs. Flowers are avoidedsince Allium flowers contain saponin, a com-pound that inhibits the growth of insects.

The adults moths are small ( approximately1/2 inch wingspan; 1/4 inch long with wingsfolded at rest) reddish-brown moths with a

white triangular mark on themiddle of their folded wings. The hindwings of the mothsare heavily fringed and arepale to dark grey in color.Adults are active at nightfalland right before dawn. Eggsare laid in the spring on leafsurfaces. The small yellow-ish-green caterpillars eat anycultivated onion-type plantprior to pupating in a red-dishbrown netted cocoon. Most cocoons are found onthe leaves but they can also

be found on decaying plant matter near thecrops.

If you grow any of the listed Alliums in yourgarden, inspect them for damage. Look formined holes and windows in the leaves, smallcaterpillars, the caterpillars droppings (frass),cocoons, or adult moths.

If you suspect leek moth damage, it is prob-ably best to destroy the plants. It is hard to usepesticides on these insects since they are oftenfound inside the plant. If you do not have dam-age, a simple row cover can prevent infesta-tion. Infected plants can be harvested and eat-en but any portion of the plant not eaten mustbe burned or bagged and sent to the landfill inorder to prevent the spread of this non nativeinsect.

Anne Lenox Barlow has had experience in the agri-cultural field as a horticulture educator with CornellCooperative Extension in Clinton County. She canbe reached by e-mail at [email protected].

A familyfish taleAs most readers of

this column prob-ably know, I have

an affinity for getting kidsinvolved in the outdoors. Itis especially important inthese times, when the allureof electronic entertainmentis far greater than the allure of lures.

I firmly believe the best method for treat-ing an electronic addiction is to put a fishingrod in a kid’s hand. A fishing rod is the ulti-mate Xbox detox tool. The reality of a fishfighting at the end of a line, trumps the vir-tual reality of Space Invaders every time.

Recently, while searching for topic for a Fa-ther ’s Day article, I received an unsolicitedemail from a source that I didn’t recognize.Usually, I simply delete such messages asjunk mail.

However, the email was captioned: “Ourdaughter ’s big fish.” It piqued my curiosity.I opened it and saw pictures of a man heft-ing a large lake trout and a young lady stand-ing next to him, beaming from ear to ear.

The note read: “I wanted to share this pic-ture of our daughter Caitlin Keysor and herbig catch. Caitlin is 15 and loves to go fish-ing with her dad, Dale. This fish was caughton June 3, 2010. The lake trout was caught in

a "Secret" Adirondack lake andwas 12 pounds and 29 incheslong! She chose her lure, cast-ed, hooked, reeled it to the boatand dad helped her net it andpull it into the boat! She is veryproud of her trophy! I hopethat you enjoy these pictures!,Lynn Bushey.”

Now, I know there are a lot ofparents that fish with theirkids. And I know that manyfamilies have shared some fan-tastic catches. However, I fig-ured that the photo, which was

obviously taken at night, likely had an inter-esting back-story.

So, I contacted Lynn Bushey. As luckwould have it, Lynn, originally from SaranacLake, was scheduled to be in town for a rel-ative’s birthday party over the weekend andagreed to meet with me later that day.

Dale Keyor, a contractor by trade, ex-plained, “We usually try to get out at leastonce a week. As you can imagine, fishing hasbecome a pretty popular pursuit in our fam-ily. And we often come home late.”

Lynn agreed. “Caitlin’s determination hasreally got him more into it!”

Caitlin is a special young lady. She has sur-vived a very traumatic car accident at ayoung age and despite a long process of re-habilitation, she is currently a freshman atSaranac Central School.

When I asked about her fishing adven-tures, Caitlin explained, “I live fishing! It’sawesome. I caught my first fish when we

were camping at Buck Pond when I was fouryears old.”

Lynn added, “ Ever since then, she’d ratherbe outdoors than indoors.”

When I asked where she caught the big lak-er, like a veteran angler, Caitlin wouldn’tgive up the location. She responded simply,“In a secret Adirondack pond.”

Her father detailed the event. “I got home from work and called my bud-

dy, who didn’t want to go. So I hooked upthe boat and Caitlin made the choice of loca-tion. She also chose the lure, and cast it her-self. I looked up and her pole was just crip-pled right over!“

“She hooked into it and fought it for awhile before she got it to the boat. I saw itand slipped a net under, and when I hauledit out, the lure popped right out of it’smouth.”

“It was awesome”, Caitlin chimed in. “Iused my favorite lure, and I call it the Scar-face lure. He (dad) doesn’t have the luck Ihave.”

It’s a wonderful story, but even moretelling is Caitlin’s enthusiasm for the out-door life. She is a Girl Scout, who loves bik-ing, hiking, snowmobiling and driving a fourwheeler and explained that she would“rather be outdoors than anywhere!”

We need more kids like her!

Preventing dog bitesBByy SSaarraahh LL.. [email protected]

PLATTSBURGH — Summer has arrivedand with that more people are out andabout, along with their dogs.

For the last decade, the Clinton CountyHealth Department has been working to ed-ucate youth on the proper ways to safely ap-proach dogs and prevent bites.

“Children sometimes are somewhat ag-gressive when they approach,” explainedCCHD public information officer LaurieWilliams. “Dogs are kid-magnets is what wealways say.”

The CCHD and the Foundation of CVPHprovide videos to teachers on how best toteach children, specifically ages 5-9, how tosafely be around dogs.

“We want to remind them, you ask per-mission when you approach a dog, whetheryou know the dog or not,” Williams ex-plained. “You need to let them smell yourhand first. All those basic little things.”

Since beginning the training, bothWilliams and senior public health sanitari-

an Rita Mitchell have noticed a decline inthe number of bites.

“We’ll never get to zero, but we’re lowerand we think it’s because we’ve had thissustained outreach in the community everyspring,” said Williams.

However, despite declining numbers,Mitchell said they still receive notice of se-vere dog bites in Clinton County every day.

“People don’t realize ... all dog bites thatare treated get reported to us and we followup to insure that the dog is up to speed onvaccinations. That there’s been proper med-ical care,” Williams explained.

Mitchell said the education provided toprevent dog bites isn’t just for young chil-dren either.

“We try to educate the owners, too, onhow to make sure their dog is properly so-cialized with people,” she said. “That theydon’t keep an aggressive dog ... So, it growsup as a safe, family pet.”

Some of the ways Mitchell suggests peo-ple can make their dog less aggressive is bygetting them accustomed to children as apuppy, and have them neutered.

“A dog has the potential to really do somemassive damage to your hands or your face

particularly,” Mitchell said. “We’re trying toprevent that injury from happening, be-cause they can be lifetime disfigurement ordisability.”

Mitchell and Williams also said dogs whocause bites can be of all sizes and breeds.

“There are certain breeds that have moreof the propensity for aggression,” Williamssaid, “but, with proper training, they can allbe good pets.”

For more information about dog bite pre-vention, and about the CCHD rabies clinics, visit www.clintonhealth.org or call 565-4870.

Hundreds of dog bites are reportedto Clinton County Health De-partment every year. Most of

them are preventable. What are some of the reasons why dogs

attack?· Protecting their puppies, territory, or family members· Feeling threatened by you· In pain, injured or ill· Surprised by your sudden appearance· Bothered while eating· Frustrated from being chained or tied· Excited, nervous or “playing”

What are the warning signs?· An aggressive or fearful posture· Growling, snarling or snapping· Staring straight ahead· Teeth showing or curled lips· Hair standing on end

With all this nice weatherwe’ve been having, whynot try taking your next

AND IT STARTS IN OUR STORIES. When the tobacco companies advertise in stories, it’s New Yorkers who pay. And we all pay - smokers and non-smokers alike. The saddest part is that our kids pay, too. They’re the ones most influenced by tobacco marketing and in-store displays. The more kids see, the more likely they are to smoke.
