Eirgrid staff moved their machinery on to Channel Road, but were confronted by a very determined group of residents who blocked their progress. A large Garda presence ensured that there were no ugly scenes between residents and Eirgrid workers. Safety issues are still to the forefront among resi- dents who are fearful of the dangers associated with the cables and they claim that Eirgrid have reneged on an agreement they made with the community. Resident, Mary Flanagan told the County Leader, “Eirgrid are in breach of an agreement with the community, which was witnessed by local represen- tatives and TD’s. It was made with Dermot Byrne, CEO, Eirgrid and they said they would not come into the town and start work until a Health and Safety report findings were published. They are here now, before the report is issued and we are furious that they broke the agreement. Eirgrid know they are in breach of the contract, yet they are here today,” she concluded. Eirgrid have moved swiftly to deny this and say that the safety report was delivered two weeks ago. Project Director, John Fitzgerald told the County Leader, “Over the past three years we have endeav- oured, in good faith, to deal with all of the questions and concerns put to us by residents, local elected representatives and by Rush Community Council. At the request of Rush Community Council, Minister Ryan commissioned an independent report by an expert on the health impact of electromagnetic fields. This report confirmed what EirGrid have said to date, there is no health risk in relation to the East West Interconnector. He continued, “The people of Rush have nothing to fear from the interconnector. We would not be developing the interconnector, or using this technology, if there was a risk to a single person living anywhere along the route. This is proven technology which has been used in many other countries in similar residential areas.” This is the view echoed last week by Councillor Ciaran Byrne when he said, “Decent people in Rush have been misled into believing this cable will damage their children’s health. Such action as disrupting of cable laying is unjustified and there is no safety issue with this project. I would not support Eirgrid if I thought there was the slightest danger to health,” said Byrne. The current phase of the works in Rush involves duct installation and does not involve cable installation. The plastic ducts will be installed in trenches working at up to 30 metres per day. EirGrid is continuing to work with Rush Community Council to address other safety concerns they have in relation to the cable. Bottle Bank LitterersCaught In Swords

The County Council have been successfulin attempts to combat littering in the NorthCounty. They recently installed CCTVcameras at the bottle bank in Watery Lane,Swords. There had been an ongoingproblem with illegal dumping at the bank.A total of 70 fines of €150 each, wereissued to people who were caught. Aspokesperson for the Council said, “Properdisposal of recycling and waste iseveryone’s responsibility. Leavinganything beside a bottle bank is not recy-

cling, it’s littering and as such is liable to a€150 on the spot fine or court appearance.Litter left at bottle bank sites around theNorth County makes it unsightly and cancause inconvenience to people living in theneighbourhood. The message from theCouncil is clear, people should keep usingtheir bottle banks to recycle their glassbottles and jars, but should not leaveanything behind as doing so would leavethem open to being fined. In addition tonumerous bottle banks around the county, the Council provide an extensive range ofrecycling facilities at Estuary RecyclingCentre, Swords”.

North County Social Welfarerecipients could have to pay forbin tags under new plans beingdiscussed by the Council. Atpresent, a waiver scheme is inoperation which means thatthose worst off don’t pay the tagcharges, but there are manywho feel that the €800,000 thescheme costs could be betterused elsewhere in these austere

Aproposal that all Social Welfarerecipients get their annualrefuse collection charges waivedmay see any revolt headed off. It’s likely that several localrepresentatives will fight thedecision at the Estimatesmeeting in December, wherethe council may have to backdown and agree a compromisedeal which may free some fundsfrom the scheme without it’stotal abolition.

Hesitant Labour MayThrow Seat Away

The Labour Party seem to have decided thatthey can only win one seat at most in DublinNorth in the upcoming General Election. Attheir selection convention to be held inBalbriggan, they will choose just one candi-date. This decision has mystified local Labourcouncillor, Gerry McGuire, who has declaredhis candidacy. McGuire told the CountyLeader, “The opinion polls indicate thatLabour can take two seats in the constituency. If Eamon Gilmore is to follow through on hisambition to be Taoiseach, he needs to havesufficient Dail deputies to ensure his election.”He also claimed that the Constituency Councilof Dublin North recommended a minimum oftwo candidates should contest the election.McGuire continued, “It appears that theorganisation committee are being undemoc-

ratic insofar as members are being ignoredand this could lead to disharmony in theconstituency. He also expressed his wish to bechosen as a potential Dail deputy. “I woulddearly like to be chosen to represent Labourand I’m making myself available for selectionas a candidate.Remember, Labourreturned six council-lors at the last localelections and theseresults, if replicated ina General Electionwould secure a secondseat for Labour. In1992, Sean Ryansecured about 14,000first preference votes, one of the largest inthe entire country and he would have easilytaken a second seat with surpluses. Thisshows that there is a strong Labour vote thatneeds to be brought out. He contends thatLabour lost a seat at the last General

Election, by not having a candidate to coverboth the north and south of the constituency. Fellow Labour hopeful, Cllr Ciaran Byrne wasjust as upbeat about the likelihood of securinga second seat. “I’m very strongly of the opinionthat two should be selected as Labour is verystrong in the North County. It is quite possiblethat Fianna Fail may lose both seats, aspeople are not stupid and will be afraid toreturn the same government again. I’m opti-mistic about my chances and I look to mycolleagues to nominate me. I tell the truth andI am unpopular in places, like Rush, but asthe truth energises people, it will be clear thatI took an honest opinion. I don’t believe in conpolitics,” he concluded. It seems strange thatLabour, with the wind at their backs shouldcommit themselves to only one candidate, at atime when there is such an appetite forchange. It may be argued in certain quartersthat it reveals a soft centre to the party andcould prove to be a fatal mistake to Mr Gilmore’s prospects of attaining thehighest office.

Pyrite Is MakingResidents’ Lives Hell

The extent of the pyrite problem is only begin-ning to emerge across the North County, according to Councillor Clare Daly (SP).Daly has been dealing with residents in a numberof estates in Balbriggan, Malahide and Rushwhere pyrite has been confirmed. She told theCounty Leader, “This is an absolute nightmarefor residents and the saddest part is that theproblem will not sort itself out. If pyrite has beenidentified in one part of an estate, the chances areit exists in other parts where the cracks have notyet emerged, but they will. Remedial works mustbe undertaken or the house will deteriorate. Theissue cannot be ignored.” “It is truly criminal thata huge part of the problem is that builders, andquarry owners and Homebond, all seem to behiding behind each other. Homebond was theguarantee put forward by the ConstructionIndustry Federation when they were allowed by

Fianna Fail to regulate themselves. But they onlyhave funds of about €24 million behind them. This is nowhere near the cost it is going to take torectify the problems in the houses.” “It costs about€70,000 to get the necessary works done, resi-dents have to uproot themselves and their fami-lies for up to six months while it is undertaken. This is a massive problem. It is inconceivable that

homeowners aresupposed to pick up thetab for this. If the CIFhas not got the funds, then those responsibleshould be tracked down. The householders areoften in negative equity, with mortgage arrears, and demands formanagement fees, andnow the governmentwants to add a property

tax. Householders have to wake up to this issue. There is probably no other way but to unite thoseaffected estates together and develop a significantpressure group that will force this issue onto theagenda. We will be working towards that in a co-ordinated way across many areas in the comingweeks,” concluded Daly.

RivermeadeGratitude To Josie

It was a sombre occasion last week for the

residents of Rivermeade, St Margaret’s as

the new mini-pitch facility was opened by

Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni. Josie

Donoghue, a well known member of the

community had been working hard for a

long time in order to get these facilities up

and running. Unfortunately, due to ill

health, Josie was unable to continue with

the project. Local man Robert Burke took

over the development and has been

working very hard over the last few months

to see the completion of the mini-pitches.

Josie was involved with the youth in the

area and after school activities which she

helped to set up. On top of all this, Josie

was very involved in the residents associa-

tion and had many duties including admin-

istration and secretarial to mention a few.

She established strong links with the

County Council and was very well liked by

everybody she knew and helped.

Josie passed away before the project was

completed but she will never be forgotten

for the wonderful work she did in the

community. The Rivermeade Residents

Association have dedicated the new facility

in her memory.

Taxi Fares To Stay StaticGood news for NorthCounty late nightrevellers after theCommission For TaxiRegulation decidedthat an increase infares would notdeliver any benefit todrivers. TheCommissioner alsoruled out loweringfares, deciding tomaintain the statusquo. A nationalminimum fare wasintroduced in 2006and increased byeight per cent toaround four euro.Almost three thou-sand drivers and

We all look forward to visiting restaurants forthat special occasion, or just to pamper theones we love, but are unsure of the service, quality of food and value for money on offer. These doubts are put to one side by a visit toMasterson’s Steakhouse Restaurant onSwords’ Main Street, where you will betreated to a culinary experience which willlive long in the memory.

The restaurant, which is ideally situated onthe Main Street, was established by owners,Robbie and Erica Masterson in May 2009. Inthis time, it has won the award of ‘BestEating Establishment in Fingal’ at the recent

Excellence in Business Awards, surely aremarkable achievement for such a recentlyestablished premises. Robbie is very gratefulto his many loyal customers for their supportin winning this coveted award. Customerswill be glad to hear that Robbie and his staffhave decided to expand the restaurant toinclude a Piano Bar upstairs. This excitingextension of the restaurant with a bar andlive music at weekends is sure to be popularwith customers.

This combination of Piano Bar and Wine Barhas its own unique atmosphere andprovides customers with the same qualityand service in an intimate setting. There is avery definite atmosphere in Masterson’s andit has a City centre feel to it. The presence ofa Piano Bar is unique to Swords and givescustomers variety. People who still want toenjoy the quality service and excellentcuisine in a quieter setting can now opt forthe more moody sanctuary of the Piano Bar.As Robbie explained, “We have a particularatmosphere in our downstairs restaurant, andthe Piano Bar upstairs wil l provide ourcustomers with exactly the same highquality, but in a more intimate setting.

Masterson’s philosophy is simple. They insiston quality food at the right price. Thiswinning combination is reflected in their useof the highest quality food available. “We use

the most expensive beef which is 100 percent Hereford and is produced by only about100 farmers in Ireland at the moment. We arealso very conscious about the local economyand we always source our food locally andinsist on supporting small businesses, partic-ularly our neighbours here on the MainStreet, where possible,” said Robbie.Customers can expect a wide variety of topclass food in Masterson’s. House specialitiesinclude, ‘Steak on the Stone’, where dinerscan cook their meal to their own particularpreference on a 400 degree lava stone. Thisis unique to the North County and is beingimitated in some of the top city centrerestaurants. Steaks are the house speciality, but their chicken and fish are also provingvery popular. An example of the variety youcan expect in Masterson’s is the availabilityof Barramundi on the menu. This is a deli-cious white fish, popular in Australia andSouth East Asia. It is a particularly mild andflavoursome fish, which is only available intwo restaurants in the entire country and istypical of Robbie’s adventurous spirit.

“Our chicken wings are also a particularfavourite and our head chef, Donal Doyle, uses his own sauce and the recipe is a wellkept secret. One particular American visitorwas very anxious to find the recipe, butDonal was tight-l ipped about it. Donalformerly worked in Picasso in Clontarf andMulino’s in Raheny and is a very importantmember of our staff,” said Robbie. Delicious

sizzling prawns are served with garlic andchilli and are proving to be much soughtafter.

Much thought has gone into the design ofthe interior of the restaurant and the impres-sive gallery of photographs on the wall imme-diately transport you to another world. Thephotographs all have a Hollywood theme andinclude icons of the Silver Screen, where theglitz and glamour of American movies arebrought vividly to life, add dramatically to theatmosphere of the restaurant. Robbieexplained, “We try to make sure that eachcustomer leaves satisfied that they got valuefor their money. We try our best to ensurethat our customers become repeatcustomers. We are very conscious of word ofmouth testimonials, which has seen ourcustomer base grow steadily,” he said.

Robbie has a wide range of experience in therestaurant business and studied HotelManagement in Athlone, before serving histime in the renowned Ballymaloe House inCork. He also worked in Steakhouses andItalian bistros in USA, and this provided agood background for the food served inMasterson’s. Robbie is a native of Swordsand married his wife, Erica, a native of Lusk, last August. They intend to set up home inLusk in the near future.

There is an Early Bird Special from Mondayto Thursday between 5:00pm and 7:30pmwhich will run until 16th December and willprovide excellent value for money during thistime. The restaurant is also available forBusiness Christmas lunches and, as placesare limited, booking is essential. There willalso be live music on New Year’s Eve whichpromises to be a great occasion, but earlybooking is also required for this event. Theopening hours are from 10am to 11pm eachday.

The variety, quality and friendly service whichawaits you in Masterson’s is a welcome addi-tion to discerning diners in the North Countyand a visit to this excellently run restaurantshould be included on everybody’s ‘to do’list. You won’t be disappointed.

Our discussions to datehave centred on beating thecompetition to get in frontof a decision maker. Wehave looked at taking atargeted approach in whoto apply to and your prepa-ration for interview. Takingup temporary / contractwork can give a prospec-tive employer a preview ofjust how good you are. The Recruitment industry isnormally about nine monthsahead of what most peoplesee in the economy. Wetherefore had a pleasure offeeling the recession wellahead of most; likewise weare now seeing an increase inactivity despite what you read

in the news. Most Irish small and

medium companies(SME’s) cut their

w o r k f o r c e

deeply when the recession hitand are now starting to needadditional resources. Theyare now understandably verycautious about the future andthe sustainabil ity of anyincreased demand. Enter temporary and contractopportunities. If you areimmediately available andyour mindset is to onlyconsider permanent opportu-nities, you are missing outhugely. Temporary andcontract opportunities oftenpresent at a level lower thanyour capabil it ies, as theemployer is considering whatthey NEED to get by. To you, this presents an opportunityto show them how your skillsexperience and commitmentcan make them moresuccessful. I have placed hundreds ofpeople in temporary / contractpositions over the years whohave taken these opportuni-ties and used them to get farbetter permanent roles in thesame companies. Temporary / contract work isa fantastic opportunity tonetwork and to display yourability in a way your CV can’t.It can also be a catalyst for anemployer to create a role tomaximise on what

you bring to their company.Consider these positions asan opportunity to showcaseyourself and your capabilities. Those that consider everysituation as an opportunity tobe maximised, are those whowill survive and excel regard-less of what is going on in thewider economy.

Best of luck.

However,Eirgrid said, “If there wasan accidental dig into thecable, the interconnector’sprotection system wouldimmediately sense the faultand disconnect it in 50milliseconds.” Local resi-dent, John Peppard spokeabout the genuine fears thatresidents have and spokeabout recommendationsmade by officials. “Anykind of pipes or cableswere to be located awayfrom houses, according toa government report,” saidPeppard. Eirgrid concurwith this and have empha-

Call For Swords AmbulanceService To Be Retained

Deptuy Michael Kennedy (FF), has called on theCounty Council and Dublin City Council to ensurethat funding for the Swords emergency ambulanceservice is maintained amid growing concerns over itssurvival. Kennedy told the County Leader, “TheSwords Emergency Ambulance service currentlyresponds to an average of 4800 to 5000 calls per year, and any cuts to this service would have serious conse-quences for this region. I am calling on the CountyCouncil and Dublin City Council’s Manager to ensurethat that continued funding is provided for the emer-gency ambulance service in Swords for its 2011budget”, concluded Kennedy. The Dublin FireBrigade (DFB) have been operating a full- timestation in Swords since January 2007, at which timethe Dublin City Manager decided to directly fund theprovision of an extra emergency ambulance to bebased at Swords Fire Station.
