Dear Friends,
Tis the season for graduations, end of the year
awards dinners for sports teams, and reunions of
all kinds. With longer days and warmer
weather, we all feel lighter, especially without
winter coats, hats and gloves! While the
program year of the church typically runs
September to June, the truth is that church
really is year-round! I recall in one church I
served, we had an outdoor service mid -summer
on the green in front of the church. A church
family on the way to the beach that morning
passed the service. One of the children in the
back seat said, “I didn’t know there was church
in the summer!” The surprised parents pulled
over and stopped in for worship on their way to
the coast. The truth is that we do indeed
worship God year round. Our church school is
complete now for this program year and will
resume after Labor Day. But now in summer,
there will be “family friendly worship” each
Sunday at 10 a.m. Bring your children, your
parents, aunts, uncles, cousins to worship.
There are always worship bags for the little
ones and the service can be heard in the
covenant room for the restless of any age.
I am delighted to let you know that my contract
has been extended through December 31, 2018.
If needed that can be extended another six
months. It is a blessing to continue to travel
together on this interim journey with you. The
Transition Team is finishing up their work and
soon will “pass the torch” to the Search
Committee. A great thank you to this hard-
working group!
The Search Committee has been approved by
the Church Council and will be commissioned
in worship on Sunday June 17. Members of the
search committee are Saramaria Allenby, Hank
Bertsch, Beverly Blaine, Sandy Checklick,
Lillian Kazanis, Joyce Kenneally, Linda
Thomas and Dennis Fox, ex officio. Please keep
them in your prayers as they engage in the
important work of seeking a new pastor for
North Falmouth Congregational Church.
In the midst of all the changes of the season and
the search process, may each of us take time to
give thanks for all that God is doing in our
midst. And celebrate the unique gifts each of us
offers as part of this special body of Christ here
in the heart of North Falmouth village. May we
walk in love together, remembering Jesus’ call
to us to “Love one another.”
In faith and in love,
Pastor Nancy

Graduating Class of 2018
Amelia Allen
I attended Falmouth High School where I sang
in the chorus and participated in school plays. I
also volunteered with the Choral Boosters. My
favorite subject is music and I also enjoy Child
Development.
I like to spend time playing my ukulele and
guitar as well as a little piano. My hobbies also
include reading, writing and spending time with
friends. I have always had pets and I especially
love animals. Being a part of the school chorus
afforded me the opportunity to travel to New
York in April where we sang in a music festival.
Sandpiper 5
I am looking forward to next year when I will be
attending Cape Cod Community College. I am
not sure what I will study yet but am considering
something involving music.
Something you might not know about me is that
I taught myself to play the ukulele. It was nice to
have the opportunity to play in church a few
times.
Leila Elguessab
I attended Falmouth High School and
participated in the acapella group Soulfege,
model UN club and teaching the Morse Pond
French Club. My favorite subject is English and
I enjoy reading, writing and spending time with
my dogs, Boston and Farley. Next year I will be
attending UMass Amherst Commonwealth
Honors College.
I’m currently enrolled to major in
communications, but that is definitely subject to
change as I explore my interests!
This past summer, I was lucky enough to go on a
service trip to Fiji. I had an amazing time and
felt that I really made a difference in the lives of
those in need. I've always loved the idea of
international travel, but the experience made me
realize just how fascinated I am by other cultures. I'm hoping to study abroad somewhere
in college, and I have even toyed with the idea of
joining the Peace Corps after finishing school!
Michael Fraser
I attended Mashpee Middle High School where I
participated in Varsity Basketball, Varsity
Baseball, Big Brothers Big Sisters, National
Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society
and Student government. My favorite subject
was AP Physics II. I really enjoy playing
basketball and hanging with my friends.
Next year I will be attending Worcester
Polytechnic Institute and majoring in
mechanical engineering while playing Division 3
baseball
Last summer I went to the state of Washington
and played in the Senior Babe Ruth Baseball
United States Championship. During the winter,
my high school basketball team played in the
Division 4 State Semi-final game at the TD
Garden.
Sandpiper 6
Madeline A. Heino
I have been attending Sturgis Public Charter
School East Campus and participating in track
and Sturgis Rovers. My favorite subjects are
English and Art and I also enjoy blogging,
music, shopping and nature walks.
Next year I plan to attend Mass Art and enjoy
living and working in Boston. My first year will
be a discovery year, but I am interested in
teaching and industrial design.
I really enjoy music. I taught myself to play a bit
on the ukulele and I am very good at spotting
new musical talent. I am very happy to listen to
the oldies, Ella Fitzgerald etc.
Church was a big part of my life growing up,
and so was the library, two places that I will try
to find when I go to Boston to get myself to
feeling that "home" feeling.
Kalyn Oliveira
I attended Falmouth High School and
participated in Field Hockey, Basketball,
National Honor Society, Math Honor Society,
Community Wellness Leaders Club, Student
Government, Jack's Pact. I especially enjoyed
my Internship at North Falmouth Elementary
School, as well as Math and Science.
My hobbies include field hockey and basketball,
running, reading, swimming and going to the
beach.
Next year I will be going to Gordon College in
Wenham, MA. I am undecided on what I intend
to study, but I am leaning toward education.
I really enjoy community service, whether it be
teaching Sunday school at church or
volunteering my time at school or with local
organizations. I hope to continue volunteering
throughout college and may even go on a mission
trip.

BLESSING OF THE BACK PACKS
Save the Date!!
Looking far, far ahead into late summer,
on Sunday September 2, all students are invited to
bring their back packs to worship for a special
blessing as the school year begins.
2018 Spring Plant Sale & Craft Fair
The weather reports the week before the fair were
saying Saturday, May 19th was going to be a wash
out. We were ready for that. Outdoor crafters were
given the choice to come inside and they did. Plants
were put in the Covenant Room so they wouldn't
get ruined by wind or rain. The Yard Sale was
postponed and will be the first or second Saturday
in June. Watch for notices on that if you have stuff
you want to donate to the Yard Sale. When
Saturday, May 19th finally came the weather didn't
show a terrible face. It was cloudy, windy and cool
but the rain held off until late and then it was mostly
just a drizzle so people did venture out to come to
the fair. Crafters that didn't set up Friday afternoon
were at the church bright and early at 7:30 a.m. to
set up their crafter's spots.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time
to dig up plants, from their yards to donate to the
plant sale. Rin Morway was in charge of perennials
and got some gorgeous plants from her yard where
a tree had gone over during the last big storm.
Carolee Packard and Laura Murphy also helped do
perennials. That is no small effort AND it adds a lot
of profit to the plant sale each time.
Thank you to the workers and crafters who parked
their cars at the North Falmouth Elementary School
so there would be more parking spaces by the
church for the shoppers. We thank the principal of
NF Elem. once again for allowing us to do that the
day of the fair. Many thanks to our “Shuttle Guys”,
John Checklick and Bill Martin, who picked people
up from the elementary school in the morning and
got them back to their cars in the afternoon. Thanks
also to the Thrift Shop workers who pulled extra
hours to keep the shop open while the fair was
going on. This year they tried a new idea on Fair
Day with everything priced $5 and above was half
price and $4 and below was $1. They had lots of
happy customers all day long and made much more
than a normal Sat. brings in. Thanks ladies !!!!!!!!
The kitchen crew of Linda Thomas, Rin Morway,
Betsy Woodley, Joyce Kenneally and Myrna
O'Hara worked very smoothly, as usual, busy all
morning preparing for the luncheon, serving and
cleaning up afterwards.
Bidding was brisk for the wonderful Silent Auction
items given by businesses around town and church
family members. The set up crew on Friday was
excellent and a special shout out to David O'Hara
for squeezing the liquid out of the lobster this year.
It was great lobster this year without too much
liquid so the job went fast.
Thank you to Debbie Pinkney, our church secretary,
for answering people's phone call questions, putting
out info in the bulletins and doing up the posters
that went around town. Also, Deb, thanks for all
little extra things you do for us during fair time.
Thanks to both Carolee Packard and Myrna O'Hara
for co-chairing the fair again this spring and for
making the many trips off Cape to Bridgewater to
get the flowers. Huge thank you to Carolee Packard
for taking care of the fair flowers in her garage until
fair time. This year's flowers were again from C.N.
Smith Farm in East Bridgewater, MA and as you
know if you bought them, they were beautiful.
We did notice that when we did the prayer circle
before the opening of the fair Saturday morning that
Sandpiper 8
the circle was quite small. We need to build up our
numbers of volunteers again or we won't be able to
do these fairs. Will you volunteer to help? We could
use help at the yard sale in June. Please think about
joining the fun. Even if you couldn't volunteer to
work this year we still appreciate you coming to the
luncheon, buying crafter's items, putting in Silent
Auction bids and buying plants to brighten your
yards and gardens this year.
The following people helped in some way to make
this fair a success. Don & Carolee Packard, Rin
Morway, Betty Galbraith, Michael & Toby Ryan,
Linda Thomas, Joyce Kenneally, Laura Murphy,
Cole & Saramaria Allenby, Janet King, Bill &
Marsha Martin, Betsy Woodley, John & Sandy
Checklick, Ken Evans, Pam Fernsebner, Sue Long,
Kay Clark, Myrna & David O'Hara. Thanks to all
who baked for the bake table too. If we missed your
name please forgive us as some people helped out
during the fair but hadn't signed up.
Yard Sale / Bake Sale Draws a Crowd
Because of the rainy weather forecast the day of the
Spring Fair it was decided to postpone the Yard
Sale until Saturday June 9th. We couldn't have
asked for a more picture perfect day 6/9 as it was
sunny and warm with a beautiful sky. Some people
probably went to the beach that day instead of
getting bargains at our yard sale but those who
came took away many treasures that people
donated.
Volunteers were at the church bright and early to
help carry boxes of items from the Thrift Shop
basement and Thrift Shop shed. Tables were set up
along the trees on the church side so we would have
good visibility when people went by on the road.
The shade of the trees also was appreciated by the
customers and volunteers. Signs out around the
community and an ad in the yard sale page of the
Enterprises helped bring in a good crowd.
Coffee and goodies were sold along with
homemade pies, homemade breads and many other
yummies on the Bake Table. Thank you to Marsha
Martin and Kay Clark for working so hard to make
the Bake Sale happen. Thanks to those people who
baked, you know who you are.
Big thank yous go out to Bill & Marsha Martin,
Jean Sawyer, Frank & Carolyn Reynolds, Jan
Hughill, and Myrna & David O'Hara for getting all
the things out and displayed. Thank you to John
our custodian for putting out the orange cones so
people wouldn't park on the Thrift Shop sidewalk.
Thank you to Ken Evans, Don & Carolee Packard,
the Martins ,the O’Hara’s and the Reynolds for
helping clean up and load everything into the three
pickup truck loads that went off to Dorothy's at the
Bourne dump. People at Dorothy's were actually
helping the guys unload when they got there and
were even climbing up in the pick ups to get things
they wanted. So we made a lot of people happy that
day.
We made over $500 for our effort, which was a
good showing considering everything was donated.
Last but not least a thank you to the ladies of our
Thrift Shop. Without those volunteers we wouldn't
be doing a yard sale to help the church. Without the
tireless Thrift Shop volunteers we wouldn't be
running a Thrift Shop which helps the community
clear their clutter and helps others in the community
to be able to afford clothing and household items at
reduced prices. Without the sorters, baggers and
key persons, of the Thrift Shop volunteers this
church's budget would probably not be functioning.
So, if you know a Thrift Shop volunteer, thank them
for what they do. If you would like to become a
Thrift Shop volunteer contact Joyce Bock. We are
always in need of volunteers.

North Falmouth Congregational
Church Profile Inventory
May 2018
During May of 2018, in support of generating a
church profile to be used in the search for new
pastoral leadership, the Transition Team of the
North Falmouth Congregational Church conducted
a survey of the church. The survey was provided to
both members of the congregation and active
nonmembers. Developed by the Harford Institute
for Religion Research, the on-line tool used was
specifically developed to help UCC churches better
understand their membership.
The on-line survey link was provided in the
Congregation newsletter, by email, by a snail mail
copy to those members without or unknown email
addresses and finally, via announcement and link on
the Transition Team’s web portal. For those not
computer literate, hard copies of the survey were
offered at the church office. The Transition Team
also offered three “after service” sessions for those
wishing a tutorial to complete the survey.
While the survey offers many insights into the
congregation, the Transition Team’s primary goal
was to generate better demographic information.
The entire results of this self-study will be shared
with church council for their discernment as well as
presented to the congregation as a whole in the near
future. For the purposes of this profile, a synopsis of
the demographic and some church satisfaction
results is provided below.
Sixty people submitted surveys with 53 completing all questions
70% of the respondents have been members 10 years of longer; 36% have been members 20 years or longer.
90% of the participants travel 15 minutes or less to/from the church. 92% responded they attend services at least once a month.
72% responded they are members of a church committee, group or organization
73% of respondents state they contribute $1,000 or more a year to the church (note: this reflects individual respondents; not households.
Two or more members of a household may be represented in this result)
Generally speaking, the congregation is satisfied with the worship services offered to the congregation
57% of the respondents prefer a 10 AM time for Sunday services while 34% desire an earlier service option
The respondents are generally satisfied with the Christian Education program.
When asked what attracted respondents to the church 52% selected “worship style”, 47% “responded the minister”, 38% said the “youth program” and 30% “because their friends attended”. (Note: respondents could give more than one reason)
When responding to what keeps respondents attending, 66% responded “worship style”, 58% said “because my friends are there” and 50% said “the minister”. (Note: respondents could give more than one reason)
The vast majority of respondents feel the physical assets of the church are adequate to meet the needs and are generally in good repair.
80% of the respondents were 55 or older with 38% reporting older than 75
70% of the respondents were female
72% were married and 18% widowed
28% responded as living with children in the household
76% have a college or post graduate degree
60% responded as being retired and 67% reported living in the area 20 years or more
85% reported annual household income of $50,000 or more
All respondents classified themselves as white
Summation: Our congregation is generally older,
married, well-educated members who live close by.
The majority are retired and have been members of
the congregation for many years. They are generally
satisfied with the worship style and Christian
Education program. They give generously and are
active in church organizations.

Transition Team to Complete
2018 Church Profile
For our congregation, the interim time between
ministers has been an intentional season that has
been guided in part by the preparation of a Local
Church Profile. This interim season has been a time
in a church’s life when it is valuable to give
attention to exploring the congregation’s vocation.
Using the Church Profile as its vehicle, the church
has discovered its data and expressing its story
through the Profile for the reliable discernment of a
search committee and the beginning of a new
pastorate. Searching ministers will wish to see this
document in its entirety.
There are three sections of the Local Church Profile
– WHO ARE WE NOW, WHO IS OUR
NEIGHBOR, and WHO IS GOD CALLING US
TO BECOME. Known together as the “Discovery
Document,” the Transition Team – not the Search
Committee – has drawn forward the gifts and
imaginative possibilities of the congregation. The
division of the labor between developing the profile
document and the actual search process allows each
group to dedicate time, thought and prayer to these
separate yet equally important task without
overburden.
Some questions were easy to answer. Some were
not so easy. Efforts to answer the questions
prompted conversations with the congregation, the
Church Council and their committees as well as the
staff of the church. Explorations, storytelling and
many prayers, were invoked as the Spirit moved
throughout the process and shaped a collective
articulation of Christ’s leading (WHO IS GOD
CALLING US TO BECOME) into the future. This
last question becomes the first section to be read by
searching ministers and is the boldest and most
actionable piece for faithful leadership into the
future.
Once completed, the Profile will be presented to the
Search Committee, Council and the Congregation.
It will also be given to our local conference for
inclusion in the call for pastoral leadership for our
church.
The Transition Team wishes to thank the entire
congregation for its help by completing the Church
Profile Survey and for your prayers over the past 6
months. Once the Profile is completed, the Team
will provide the Profile to the Search Committee for
its work as well as Church Council. Finally, the
Profile will be posted for the Congregation’s
viewing. Watch the next Sandpiper for complete
details on how to access the Profile.
Thanks again, Your Transition Team

Starfish Outreach……Who
wouldn’t like to receive a
beautiful card with a warm
message? We have nice cards
available outside of the church
office waiting for you to write a
little something and send it to
one of the shut-ins in our church family.
Occasionally, one of them may need a ride to a
church activity or medical appointment. This may
be a way for you to assist a fellow member in need.
Some of you may wish to visit with one of the shut-
ins. There are many ways to reach out and make a
difference in the life of another member of our
church family. For those who do not feel
comfortable with calling on a shut-in but would like
to do so, there is training available. It is a
heartwarming gift to yourself when you reach out to
someone else. If you have interest in sending cards,
providing transportation or shut-in visitation,
contact Pastor Nancy or Marsha Martin.
Calling all coffee drinkers!
Do you enjoy having a cup of coffee and a treat
while gathering with friends after the Sunday
morning church service? If you do, we would like to
invite you to volunteer to be a server for one or two
Sundays this summer. It doesn’t take much training
to make the coffee and put out the cream & sugar,
juice and goodies.
For this wonderful form of fellowship to continue,
we need more people to help put it on. I look
forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
