Families that buy a home from Habitat pay the organization mortgage payments which are geared towards their income

level. Also, the mortgage is interest free and there’s no down payment, according to Miller, who added that it’s “a hand up, not a handout.”

According to Miller, the homes will be energy-effi cient, and Habitat plans to build them to Platinum Level Accreditation through Built Green

Canada.The organization is

looking for volunteers to help with the project.

It needs help with fundraising, which people can do on their own or as part of a team.

Businesses can also help fundraise, and Miller said JET-FM plans to raise $100,000 towards the project.

Habitat also needs skilled trades people to help with the physical construction work once the foundation and ground work is fi nished.

“The volunteers — their job is to put the walls up and get a roof on the house and we need a lot of support from the sub-trades,” said Miller, adding there is no minimum time commitment for volunteers.

On Friday representatives from Vancouver Island municipalities, First Nations and Regional Districts gathered in Qualicum Beach to listen to a panel of fi lm industry experts talk about the economic impact of fi lming on location.

Speakers included Executive Producer Casey Grant, (13th Warrior, Snowdogs, Catch and Release, Charlie St Cloud and Alvin & the Chipmunks,

Chipwrecked), Location Manager Kendrie Upton (Tron, Watchmen Final Destination 5 and CBC’s new hit series Artic Air), and Commercial Producer Heinrich Beisham (Means of Production worked on over 3,000 commercials).

Hosted by Island North Film Commission the goal was to inform and build consensus with regard to regional collaboration.

In 2011, INfi lm

serviced 102 productions, 34 chose the region to fi lm, with a direct economic impact of $2,142,735.00 . The fi nancial investment from the provincial and municipal governments in INfi lm saw a 21-1 return on the dollar. Compare these numbers to a standard fi nancial investment where 20

cents on the dollar is a good return and there is no doubt that INfi lm continues to do a great job.

MIFO is a continuous harvest operation (6 X 3 shift) in an effort to harvest approximately 1.1 MM m³ annually and build about 140 kilometers of road. The job is located at Menzies Bay but much of the work will be located in the Kelsey Bay area.
