Courtenay-based author Paula Wild will visit the North Island Nov. 14-18 to gave a series of presentations on her latest subject matter.

Her timing is impeccable.

Wild’s latest offering, The Cougar: Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous looks at coexisting with the enigmatic cat, scarcely out of local headlines of late.

In recent weeks a Port McNeill couple were attacked while out walking their dogs, a series of sightings in the town led to school and daycare shutdowns and tracking dogs were brought in to find the animal.

In Port Hardy a series of sightings prompted a Facebook group to share information.

A pair of locals cleared undergrowth along a trail frequented by school kids after several reported seeing a cougar devour a house cat along the route.

Locals are well-used to living with wildlife, but these recent encounters — particularly those involving children — have concerned many, so Wild’s tour could not be more apropos.

The author is an accomplished wordsmith whose previous work has been well received, the author pickup a BC Historical Federation Certificate of Merit for her contributions.

Her most recent

work, The

Cougar, has been

a labour of love for

the past two-and-

a-half years after she

heard a cougar scream in the green space behind her home.

The sound began a

quest for knowledge on the mysterious feline.

Wild inter view ed sci ent ists, wild life offi-

cials, zoo keep ers, cou gar hunters and

people who have shared their homes

with cou gars, and took part a two- day safety and aware ness course that involved mock encoun ters with life- size card board cut-outs of cou gars, coming to the conclusion that, “co-existing with cougars isn’t about fear, it’s about knowledge.”

Wild will share some of that knowledge in a series of slideshow presentations and book signings on her North Island tour.

The presentations begin with a visit to Port Alice Library on Nov. 14, 7-8 p.m. For more information on the presentation call 250-284-3554.

Wild will be joined

by partner Rick James, promoting his book Raincoast Chronicles 21: West Coast Wrecks and other Maritime Tales, for appearances as part of Sointula’s Winterfest.

The pair will have a booth at the festival on Nov. 16 and will present at the Sointula Fire Hall from 10 a.m.- noon on Nov. 17.

For more information contact the author at [email protected].

Yvonne Moran-Mead and her daughter Demi have stockpiled more than 2,000 bras to help women who were sold into prostitution, many as children.

The Comox Valley mother-daughter team started collecting new and gently used bras after hearing about the U.S.-based non-profit organization Free The Girls early this year. The organization ships the bras to female human trafficking survivors in other parts

of the world where the women sell them to generate their own income as they start new lives.

Yvonne says she never expected the outpouring of public support to be as huge as it has been.

“It’s great,” she says. “I am very surprised. I expected it to kind of fizzle out by now to be honest with you.”

Comox Valley women quickly jumped on board and bra donations came flowing in; about 600 bras came in within about a month. Though Yvonne

expected public interest to fizzle out, the donations kept coming, with women on various other parts of the Island offering to become drop-off locations, then sending bulk donations to Yvonne and Demi.

Campbell River, Parksville, Nanaimo and Ladysmith women donated bras, but donations came from further afield as well. A group of University of Victoria women

gathered together a package of bras to send to Yvonne and Demi, and women from the Greater Vancouver area, women from Alberta, and even a woman from Ontario, all heard about Yvonne and Demi’s dropoff location and sent donations to the Comox Valley.

“It’s always a surprise when you open up the door and there’s a large box there,” says Yvonne. “We really appreciate all the donations that we’ve gotten — no matter how big or how small that they are, they still mean the same to us. We don’t get more excited because we’ve received 100 from this person, any more than we would get excited receiving 20 from somebody else. Each bra is just as valuable.”

Yvonne and Demi are waiting on a few more large donations they’re expecting before they send all the bras off to Free The Girls.

Free The Girls launched in 2010, and the organization

has collected more than 200,000 bras since then, according to its website www.freethegirls.org

After a pilot program in Mozambique saw women — most of whom were sold into prostitution between the ages of eight and 10 — making three to five times the minimum wage selling bras, the organization sent two more shipments of bras there.

According to its website, the women receive their starting inventory free, but then purchase additional inventory below wholesale value, making the program sustainable.

Yvonne and Demi offer to pick up bra donations as they travel regularly up and down the Island for their business Sweet Little Baby Cakes. To contact them, call 250-897-3224 or e-mail [email protected] Dropoff locations are listed on their website www.sweetlittlebabycake.weebly.com

For many the shing season has ended and boats will be pulled out of the water for winter storage and maintenance. A handful of guides will remain shing for the fall /winter and the rivers or salt will be the destination. Crabbing areas of note are Gowland Harbour and Menzies Bay. Professional guides who don’t sh for winter springs will be starting the season on May 1st. With the light rain we had, the rivers in the area are looking good as the coho will start moving up to spawn. The rivers will have a heavy concentration of anglers on the weekend and the water levels are ideal for the y angler. Flies tied

with a silver body and yellow, purple or green deer hair or polar bear hair are popular. One of my shing destinations has been the

Oyster River where on my last shing trip the water color was like tea and the trout were hitting ies within my rst 3 casts into the pool. There were some signs of coho moving up in the pools and a few anglers were throwing out small spinners in hopes of catching a hatchery coho. With the rain hopefully coming soon, some great catch and release shing will be had and as we get closer to the snow falling soon, the Oyster will be ready for y anglers both local and those coming to sh from the mainland. Local lakes can be shed from shore using spinning gear or bait, always check for regulations before heading to a lake to sh, also check for bait bans as described in the regulations.

Fractured means broken.

Whether you have a complete or a partial fracture, you have a broken bone.

Just about any bone in your body (except the funny bone) can be fractured. Fractures can happen in a variety of ways, but there are three common causes.

Trauma accounts for most fractures.

For example, a fall, a motor vehicle accident or a tackle during a football game can all result in a fracture.

Osteoporosis, or decreased bone density, can also contribute to fractures.

Stress fractures occur from overuse or continued pressure on a particular bone and are most common among athletes.

Usually, you will know immediately if you have broken a bone.

Doctors usually use an X-ray to verify the diagnosis.

Stress fractures are more difficult to diagnose, because they may not immediately appear on an X-ray.

Doctors use casts, splints, pins, or other devices to

hold a fracture in the correct position while the bone is healing. External fixation methods include plaster and fibreglass casts, cast-braces, splints, and other devices.

Internal fixation methods hold the broken pieces of bone in proper position with metal plates, pins, or screws while the bone is healing.

Fractures take

several weeks to several months to heal, depending on the extent of the injury.

Even after your cast or brace is removed, you may need to continue limiting your activity until the bone is solid enough to use in normal activity.

Usually, by the time the bone is strong enough, the muscles will be weak because they have not been used and your joints may feel stiff from not using them.

Proper strengthening and stretching exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist can help speed the healing process for most types of broken bones. Fixing your funny bone is, of course, a topic for an entirely different article.

Ben Chatterson is a physiotherapist at Rehabilitation in Motion which has four Island locations. Visit www.rehabinmotion.com
