There are a few more remedies to consider in the treatment of prostate cancer but my goal as a naturopathic physician is prevention. So let’s start there.

How can prostate cancer be prevented?

Well there are many “anti-inflammatory” lifestyle measures as well as nutraceuticals that are important for cancer prevention

and the lowering of PSA’.s Anything that will lengthen telomeres (the length of the DNA) improves longevity and lowers the risk of disease including cancer. The SIRT1 genes in mammals are the most studied and exercise, caloric restriction, meditation as well as vitamin D, astragalus and resveratol have been found to increase telomere

length by modifying SIRT1 pathways. Blood parameters such as CRP (C reactive protein), homocysteine and glucose, when kept low, contribute to longer telomeres.

In my practice I like to measure 25(OH) vitamin D in most of my patients to obtain compliance in taking a therapeutic amount of vitamin D for the prevention of many

illnesses including cancer. Measurement of 25(OH) is controversial at this time but moderate dosing is generally effective at raising levels to a therapeutic level. Patients report better energy, lowering of blood pressure, improved sleep and mood. Higher vitamin D levels in prostate cancer patients correlated with less aggressive forms of cancer with better outcomes.

Curcumin in high doses is a great anti-inflammatory and treatment for many cancer lines including

colon, breast and prostate. To quote Dr.

Goel Ajay Goel, MD, of Baylor University Medical Center’s Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas

“Curcumin is a very, very strong

anti-inflammatory compound. Inflammation is the root cause of most chronic diseases. If we can reduce inflammation, we can reduce all of these things. Curcumin provides an effective natural way of doing this with very low risk of adverse effects.”

Including in my prevention therapies is a diet low in sugar and high in anti-oxidants including foods high in lycopene such as tomatoes, watermelon and grapefruit. I recommend consuming greens daily either in the form of salads, cooked greens or green smoothies. Omega 3

essential fatty acids along with healthy fats such as olive oil and coconut oil are anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer.

PSA to measure or not to measure? The medical community is not recommending PSA screening for the early detection of prostate cancer, but talk to any prostate cancer patient and they would be adamant about getting your PSA checked. The key is to monitor the levels of PSA and compare them to previous levels, looking for a doubling time. Even with elevated PSA’s that have been proven by biopsy to be non cancerous, as long as the doubling time is low, then the risk may also be low. Once a male has had a prostate biopsy they don’t want another one if they can avoid it! So if the PSA levels start to increase I get more aggressive with my treatment programs. I recommend having

baselines of PSA’s done at the age of 50 or younger and then monitoring every 1-2 years thereafter along with a yearly DRE (digital rectal exam).

Treatments for prostate cancer.

Newer research is emerging on the use of Magnolia (Honokiol) for the treatment of many cancer lines including prostate cancer. Honokiol inhibits prostate cancer cell growth and down regulates the androgen receptor and inhibits 5 alpha reductase which may also offer some protection against prostate cancer development. Honokiol is also safe with many different chemotherapy drugs for many different types of cancers.

Aggressive forms of prostate cancer can be controlled by lowering estrogen blood levels by using a remedy called Myomin.

In an earlier column, I mentioned the importance of using the best quality materials that you can afford when you build. I also like to encourage my clients to focus on materials that are sustainable.

Here are some of the characteristics that, generally speaking, define sustainability: The resource is renewable if used properly; it gives good energy performance; it’s affordable and sourced locally; it’s durable; it’s workable by hand without the use of elaborate machinery or excessive energy inputs; and, finally, it’s recyclable at the end of its use.

We need a revolution in ideas and practices to produce

more materials that fit these criteria.

What about insulation made from waste wood, like chips or tree bark? Can we repurpose Styrofoam waste into high-performance building

products? There’s growing interest in mushroom-based products such as insulation panels produced from agricultural waste bound together with mycelium. Straw bales

in home-building can also be part of the solution. Some interesting new products are appearing, although some may not be affordable for years to come.

Until then, “wood is good.” It’s a truly renewable resource; with proper stewardship and careful harvesting, we need never run out. Wood is versatile, with a wide range of uses and many types

and grades available. It can be produced locally without the use of heavy industrial equipment of the sort used to make plastic, glass or steel and it’s tactile, user-friendly and authentic.

Using locally sourced wood products is cost-effective and supports our communities economically. It also saves the energy that would otherwise be consumed by long-

distance transport. Let’s also not forget its aesthetic value: wood is a natural resource that surrounds us on the West Coast. When we build our homes with it, they harmonize with the landscape and reflect the unique beauty of this part of the world.
