With thousands of cancer patients receiving bloodtransfusions every year, NHS Blood and Transplant ischallenging people to make a date to donate to markthis year’s World Cancer Day.On 4 February people from around the world will join together to dispelthe myths around cancer for World Cancer Day. Many people who develop cancer have a need for red blood cell orplatelet transfusions during their treatment. Cancer patients may developanaemia (a reduction in the number of red blood cells in their blood) orhave a reduced number of platelets in their blood (the clotting cellswhich prevent bleeding). This can be due to the cancer or its treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A blood transfusion can givea patient more energy and improve the quality of their life.

Derek Carr, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, said “With platelets only having a shelf life of seven days and red cells having a shelf life of 35 days, patientsdepend on the generosity of blood and platelet donors to provide thevital transfusions they need.

“World Cancer Day is a good time to remember that blood is not only given in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases. With around 7,000 units of blood needed every day, I wouldencourage both new and returning donors to make a date to roll up theirsleeve and donate.”Once blood has been donated, it is broken down into individual components including red cells and platelets. Platelets can also be collected separately from donors using special machines at 24 centresacross England.

To find out if there is a blood donation centre nearyou or to book an appointment at any of the abovesessions, call 0300 123 23 23 or visitwww.blood.co.ukAnyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs)and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors whohave donated in the last two years.

Are you friendly and outgoing?Do you have a few hours to spareper month?

You could change the life of a child or young person.Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking forvolunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by NorfolkChildren’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families.

Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adultrole models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them.

Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding, support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get totake their young person out on trips and visits to places such as thebeach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee.

You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving the life of children and have some free time on a regular basis.

For more information please contact Steph at the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service on 01362 697537 or 07843345740, or e-mail: [email protected]: www.actionforchildren.org.uk

We are already half way through the month ofJanuary and we have started planning ourMothers Day Luncheon, but first we haveto complete our preparations for Valentine’sDay, which this year is on a Friday.

We will of course be offering our usual romantic Valentines Day Menu and this yearextending the celebrations to the 15th with aspecial Sharers Menu served in the bar andagain offering our Valentines Menu as well asour as usual Evening Restaurant Menu.

To add to the atmosphere we have live musicin the bar on the Friday and Saturday night.

We have also arranged a special pre- and post-Pantomime Menu for the OverstrandPantomime ‘Sleeping Bewty’ which is beingstaged at the Parish Hall on the 20th - 22ndFebruary 7.30pm as part of our charity fund-raising events for Nelson’s Journey.

It should be a really fun evening and wethought it would be a good idea to offer a special meal deal by way of a thank you toboth the audience and of course the ‘thespians’,many of whom are regulars at the White Horse.

Don’t forget we are still running our ‘2 fo1Meal Deal’ Monday - Friday lunchtimes andour ‘Speciality Food Nights’ are also making awelcome return every Wednesday eveningstarting in February.

Organisers of this year’s Reephamfestival have announced that legendary rock band Big Countryare to headline the two-day festivalin August. From 1983 onwards Big Country delivered a series of multi-million selling singles and albums including the classics In A Big Country,Wonderland, Fields of Fire and Look Away. The 1990s saw them touring with the likes ofThe Rolling Stones and The Who. In 1998 theyopened for the Rolling Stones on their ‘BridgesTo Babylon’ tour of Europe prompting MickJagger to comment that Big Country were ‘oneof the best opening bands we ever had’.

2007 saw a reunion of the band accompaniedby renewed success, endorsed by appearancesat the Isle of Wight, T in the Park, Oxegen andV Festivals in 2011 and 2012. Last year saw a major tour with new bassist Derek Forbes,ex-Simple Minds, who was voted Best Scottish Bass player of all time.

‘We’re really pleased to have been able to secure Big Country, especially when they arebeing scooped up by major festivals across theUK and Europe’ said Festival Chairman SteveJenkins. ‘It just reinforces Reepham’s growingpresence on the festival circuit. Reepham has a reputation for being able to bring in a well-known headline band each year - BigCountry continues that tradition and will undoubtedly appeal to older and newer fans

alike.’

Around fifteenbands and artists will be performing overthe Festival weekend of 9thand 10th of August and ‘EarlyBird’ tickets are on

sale from Saturday 1st February priced at£17.50 instead of the full price of £20. Dis-counted camping tickets are also available for alimited period

‘We’re expecting even more people to buy in advance this year’ explained Steve Jenkins‘partly because the event sold out in 2013 and we had to close the gates early, but also because Big Country are appearing – whichhas already attracted a lot of attention throughsocial media such as Facebook and Twitter.’

Details of ticket prices can be found at www.reephamfestival.co.uk and can be bought from UEA Students’ Union at www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk01603 508050 and at Soundclash,St Benedict’s Street, Norwich,Very Nice Things, Reepham and from Whitwell & ReephamStation.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week 24 February – 2 March Beat – the Norwich-based national eating disorders charity celebrates its25th anniversary during 2014

2014 is extra special as awareness week marks the start of Beat’s 25thanniversary. Since 1989 we have been supporting those with an eatingdisorder as well as their family and friends, providing informationthrough our Helplines, UK wide network of self help and support groups and online support; providing expert training and resources to professionals and schools; supporting and encouraging research and campaigning for better services and access to treatment.

To mark our special year on Wednesday 22 October we shall be holdinga Memorial Service in Norwich Cathedral remembering those who’velost their lives to eating disorders. Attending will be family and friendsfrom across the UK who’ve lost a loved one or experienced the distressthese devastating illnesses can cause.

Raising awareness is a serious matter, but it can be fun too. During theweek we run our Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising campaign andencourage people to get silly with their socks and raise funds for Beat.Supporters can hold silly sock days at school or work, organise a sockthemed bake sale or take part in a sponsored event in bright and funnysocks. This year the campaign is being supported by Britain’s Got Talentwinners dance group Diversity.

Dementia SummitFollowing last month’s G8 Summit on dementia, Norman Lamb MP iscalling on his constituents to share their personal experience of care forpeople living with the condition, to help inform a ground-breaking na-tional programme of inspections which is being led by the Care QualityCommission (CQC). The CQC is undertaking 150 inspections of care homes and acute hospi-tals across England until the spring of 2014. The findings will help painta picture of how people with dementia are cared for with a view to im-proving the quality of care for people with the condition. People can share their experiences with the CQC in the following ways: by email at [email protected] telephone on 03000 61 61 61 or online via a webformCQC is also working with local groups to gather people’s experiencesincluding: Age UK, Dementia Action Alliance, Regional Voices, De-mentia Advocacy Network and the Race Equality Foundation.Norman Lamb said “I see in my role as Health Minister, and in my con-stituency, the suffering caused by dementia not just for those with thecondition but also for their friends, families and carers. Dementia affects670,000 people in England, and this is set to rise considerably in the fu-ture. We want people to able be able to live independently at home foras long as possible but, when their needs are such that they need to gointo a care home or hospital, it is so important that they are well lookedafter. “It is important that the CQC is carrying out focused inspections of carefor people with Dementia – this can be one of the hardest things to getright in our health and care system, and the quality of care for peoplewith dementia varies substantially. There are too many cases wherestandards of care for people with dementia are simply nacceptable. Thisis an opportunity for people touched by dementia to share their experi-ences of care homes and hospitals so we can see what works well andwhat needs to improve. “There are three areas where we need to do more: better diagnosis rates, better care for those with the condition, and better co-ordination andfunding of research into the condition.”

At our December meeting, our President, Elsa Sequeira, welcomed 11 members and onevisitor. We all took along a non-perishable food item as ourtalk was by Tina and MalcolmNicholas of the Cromer FoodBank. For anyone who wasn't aware of how FoodBanks came into being and how they helpedpeople in need, this was a very interesting andinformative talk. Detailing the stages from theidea of a Cromer Foodbank to extend the reachof the Norwich one, through the staggering attendance of over 100 people at their firstmeeting followed by finding storage space anda depot and extending even further to includeSheringham, Aylsham, North Walsham and

Stalham. We also watched a DVD of theTrussel Trust's work - the organisation behindthe first Foodbank in Salisbury which washoused in a garden shed and garage. In the aftermath of the December Storm Surge, theCromer Foodbank provided almost a ton offood to people in Walcott and surrounds. At our January meeting, Elsa welcomed 14 members, four new members and six visitors. We were also joined by three representatives from the Norfolk WI Federation. Our speaker was Hannah Clarke the local NHS Health Trainer.

Based at the NNDC offices in Cromer, the fivehealth trainers for our area hold free clinics inlocal doctors' surgeries. They offer help andadvice on various health issues including stopping smoking, taking more exercise, healthy eating and reducing alcohol intake.

Hannah advised thatpeople can self-referor can be referred bytheir GP. An initialone hour session isfollowed by five fur-ther sessions to checkprogress and providemotivation.

Hannah used variousprops to convince us to change our ways!

From a'tar jar'showingtheamountof tar collectedover one year in a smoker's lungs, to a pickledliver (complete with gherkin!) to show how a sclerotic liver looks. So much good, free advice in the form of booklets, charts andDVDs are available from this excellent service.A very enjoyable and informative evening wasenjoyed by all and we still, as always, had cakeat the end!

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19 February at 7pm in the upstairs function room of the Kings Arms Hotel in North Walsham. Our speaker will be Gemma Morrisof Back in Motion, the Physiotherapy clinicbased at the Atrium in North Walsham. Gemmawill be explaining how Acupuncture can relieve pain and aid recovery and also the benefits of Clinical Pilates when recoveringfrom injury or to improve fitness and posture.

Visitors are very welcome at our meetings, wejust ask for £4 to help with meeting costs. Welook forward to welcoming many new faces in2014.

North Walsham Market Cross WIThe January meeting was held in our new venue of St Nicholas room. Our speaker for the evening was Mr Charles Lewis who gave us manyfascinating facts and figures on the spice trade. It was both a history andgeography view spanning hundreds of years. We were told of its exoticand tropical origins and how at one time it had been the world's largestindustry. Possibly we will now appreciate our humble spices of cinnamon and nutmeg when we use them. Kim gave the vote of thanks.

In the last report I incorrectly stated the subscription fees. I apologise forany inconvenience caused on the night and confirm the correct fee forthe current year is £34.70.

The President asked us to vote for the four resolutions individually, this was achieved by the showing of hands.

The next coffee and natter will be at Lily's tearooms situated at the Hadfield's garden centre at 10.30am.

Our next meeting is on 12 February where Mrs Maggie Gallop will give us a Denman Presentation.

The competition on the evening is anything to do with Love.

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month and we are now installed into our new venue at The St. Nicholas Room (this is accessedthrough the main St Benet Hall door. and the start time is now 7.30pm.A warm welcome is given to all so why not come and give us a try.

With Spring now fast approaching, it is time to make that important decision to get your cat neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies andhaving to find homes for the resulting kittens or place them into our carebecause homes cannot be found (we had 153 kittens in care last year).Obviously it is important that the female cats are neutered but equally soto neuter the males who will travel miles to find an unneutered femaleand consequently take the risk of being hit by a car on busy roads orcontacting FIV or FELV from other unneutered toms. This is born outfrom our recent experiences as at present we have three cats in care, allmale, all with FIV, and all have come into care as strays, although it isobvious they have had homes in the past as they were all very friendlyand affectionate. As they have very likely strayed from their originalhomes in search of females and got into fights with infected cats, theywill now all need new indoor homes either as the only cat or with othercats infected with FIV. Bombadier, Jude and Granville are all suchlovely cats and if only their owners had got them neutered, perhaps thiswould not have happened.

Last year, as is usual, we received a grant from our Head Office topay/help pay for neutering cats where the owner could not afford to, butthis had all been spent by April. All help with neutering from May to

December came from branchfunds. Although we are happyto help with the cost of neutering (both females - £26,and males - £20) we hope thatpeople who can afford to payfor this will do so. It takes alot of time and effort to raisemoney for the branch and weneed to ensure the money is spent in an appropriate manner.

As I prepared this article Iheard from Stephanie that shehad just taken in seven cats (amum and six 9 month old kittens) plus five 4 week old kittens and thenext day a further five kittens would be coming into care from anotherhousehold. If only their owners had got the cats neutered! There is now“no more room at the inn”.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on theabove number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kittenplease ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Walking in a WinterWonderlandCaring for your dog is a year roundjob, but in the cold weather we need topay extra attention to the health andwellbeing of our four legged friends. Here’s our top tips on keeping yourdog in tip top condition during thewinter months:• Grab your coat and walk off the

winter blues. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, try to maintain a regular routine as the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit.

• Be seen. Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead.

• Prevent sore paws. Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads, always rinse and dry your dog's feet when you get home to avoid cracked, sore pads.

• Stop snow balls. The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable snow balls forming when out on a wintery walk.

• Wrap up warm. Older dogs or those with short, fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat.

• Feeling thirsty? Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal.

• It’s cold outside. Don’t leave your dog out in the garden for long periods of time in cold weather, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside then it’s too cold for them.

• Be safe not sorry. Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

Open to the public from 4 February to 28 February at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museumin Cromer, Hope in the Great War will start a 4-year tour of RNLI and other museums and of RNLI lifeboat stations. Hope in theGreat War will highlight the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the waryears, conveying a sense of hope as many liveswere saved at sea by the charity. The exhibitionoffers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during WW1 and will feature a play area foryounger children.

The exhibition wasmade possible by an Arts Council England grant of£78,200 awarded tothe RNLI in order toshare more widelythe role of the charity’s coastalcommunity volunteers duringWW1 to help markthe centenary.

The lifeboat servicesto feature within theexhibition include:

• Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea

on 9 January 1917.• The 1914 Whitby

RNLI lifeboat rescue of the wrecked hospital ship HMHS Rohilla which saw 144 people saved from the sea.

• Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer SS Glenravel which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 August 1915.

• RNLI Port Eynon lifeboat’s service to the Dunvegan that took place 1 January 1916.

• The rescue of 23 survivors from the SS Alondra which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two Royal Naval trawlers.

The RNLI has been working with local community groups to create inspirational artworks that interpret their own local lifesaving story. These items, including a giant jigsaw, a podcast and an animation, will be included in the exhibition and allow thefullest story of the rescues to be told nationally,in an interactive and engaging manner.

The committee have been very grateful for thesupport we have had and we thank you all verymuch.

The main reason we have had to take this decision is that over the last two years we havehad a basket support collapse each year, thelast one very nearly hitting a customer. Thehooks we used were not supplied by us, we justused the hooks that were already in place andeach year we had a builder check the hooksand issue a report so that we were covered forinsurance purposes.

However we have old buildings constructedmostly from soft Norfolk Red Bricks and with baskets weighing virtually 30lbs with thereservoir full, perhaps we were tempting fate tothink that these supports would be sufficient. We looked at the possibility of a support replacement programme but the logistics and the cost is beyond our resources.

So what do we plan to do?

We are going to maintain hanging the eightbaskets around the Market Cross and the fourbaskets on the stand further up.

We are investing in five new towers like thoseoutside the church – one to go outside the PostOffice to replace an old one removed last year, two to replace the concrete rings at the entrance to the New Road car park, one to goin the centre of the beds at the entrance to theGriffon College site and one to replace the tubsnear the Market Cross.

We are also in negotiation with County Highways to add more saddle troughs to the railings outside HSBC.

We are taking over responsibility for the Griffon site beds on Grammar School Roadcurrently under the County Council control but effectively are not.

To continue in this capacity we still need financial support from the public and businesses in the town, so if any of you wish to sponsor a tub (£25 per annum displayingyour logo) etc please contact me.

Once again from the North Walsham in Bloomcommittee thank you for your support so far.We do hope you will be able to support ourprojects in the future.

On behalf of the North Walsham in Bloomcommittee by Chris Roberts 01692 402174

North Norfolk Social Centre for the BlindOn Thursday 5 December North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind held its annual ChristmasLunch at the Community Centre. It was almost a full house and we all had a great time. The Ludham Choir came again to sing some carols and everybody joined in. The ChristmasRaffle had many prizes donated by local companies. The main prize was a very large hamperfollowed by a huge amount of voucher, tins of biscuits, a selection of bottled wines and spiritsand lots of other prizes. The Committee would like to thank all members for their great support throughout the year and also the local traders who support us. We had a kind donationof £200 from North Walsham and District Round Table, other donations and prizes came in from The Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham, East Coast Plastics, Davenport's Magic Kingdom, Rossis Leisure, Waitrose plc of North Walsham, Tesco plc Stalham, Sainsbury plcNorth Walsham, Morrisons plc Cromer, Julie Mobray, Photographer Aylsham, Tetley TeaCompany, Yorkshire Tea Harrogate, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, Roys ofWroxham and Andy Grey Electrical. We thank them all.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 6 February when we will open up our doors again foranother great year of entertainment arranged by a very good committee that keep working tomake their members happy.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and everyone that has helpedour club in the past a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. It is not easy raising funds butthe support of the local community certainly helps and as a club we are very grateful.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOMNorth Walsham in Bloom is having to reluctantly withdraw from the annual supply of hanging baskets to all the town traders who have supported us over the years.

Record Passenger Numberson Poppy LineRecord passenger numbers last year on the North Norfolk Railway have now been confirmed. The Poppy Line carried 157,800 passengers in 2013, a rise of 6% over 2012 and an all-timerecord for the line. The previous best was 150,497 in 2011.

General Manager Trevor Eady said "Our volunteers and staff have produced an outstandingresult, especially given the year's constraints on disposable income and a weather-hit SpringGala at the start of the season. Key factors in the performance were an excellent August, andrecord traffic levels at Day Out With Thomas in May, the summer Steam Gala, and theSeptember '40s Weekend."

Mothers' UnionOur first meeting of 2014 was an informal one towhich members were asked to bring a favourite arti-cle or poem to share with the group. The meetingwas well attended and we heard a good selection ofmaterial.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11 February at2.30 pm in the St Nicholas Room when the Rev-erend Nigel Paterson will talk about his recent pil-grimage along The Way of Saint James. Visitorsand new members are always welcome. For moreinformation please contact Ann Herd on 402705.

Rotarians set a challengefor our future leaders Rotary International has a long tradition ofworking with young people. One of theways it does this is through the RotaryYoung Leaders’ or RYLA scheme, aweek long ‘outward bound’ courses foryoung people aged 18-25 who havethe potential to become the leaders ofthe future – in the workplace or in thecommunity setting.

Rotarians in East Anglia organise aweek-long programme in late Summer atGrafham Water, near Huntingdon. This year’s dates are August 30 – September 6.

Those who have been part of the scheme, called RYLA, in the past say it is a really fantastic, even life-changing, experience, pushing thememotionally, intellectually and physically to the limit, and enabling themto discover new strengths and skills, and to achieve things they wouldnever have felt they were able to do before the course.

Rotarians from the North Walsham and Broadland Clubs have workedtogether for some years to sponsor young people to attend and will meetall expenses for suitable candidates.

So if you are a young person aged 18-25 (on 1 September 2014) who isseeking a challenge, and aspires to a leadership role in the future, thismay be for you. Equally if you are an employer or teacher and know ayoung person who would benefit from RYLA, please tell them aboutRYLA.

You can find out more by downloading an information packwhich describes RYLA in full and tells you how to apply at www.nw-rotary.org.uk

District Council offices to accommodate County CouncilNorthern Area Children’s Services team Agreement has been reached for members of Norfolk County Council’sNorthern Area Children’s Services team to be accommodated in NorthNorfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices in Cromer.

In April, staff from the County Council’s Northern Area Children’sServices team will move from their current office, primarily in NorthWalsham, to their new base in Cromer.

NNDC Leader Tom FitzPatrick said “This is excellent news for everyone involved. Basing the Northern Area Children’s Services teamin Cromer will make it much easier for District and County Councilstaff to work together for the benefit of vulnerable families living in thispart of Norfolk.

“It also makes sound economic sense. The District Council has streamlined its operation to become more efficient at what it does and now employs fewer staff, while continuing to maintain our front-line services, so we have space available in our Cromer offices. We have agreed a 10 year lease with the County Council, at a commercial rent. As well as being good for our residents, this agreement will also be a more efficient use of public assets. We look forward to working more closely with our County Council colleagues at all levels in the future.”

James Joyce, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding Children at NorfolkCounty Council, said “This is good move which will benefit families in North Norfolk, as it means both councils will be able to work moreclosely together to support those in need.

“We want to work collaboratively with our partners wherever possible to share resources and make the best use of taxpayers’ money.

“This move will also give staff the opportunity to work in modern, open plan offices, making it easier to share information and work more efficiently.”

Dear Margaret,It seems staggering that January's cabinet meeting at North Norfolk District Council has been cancelled due to a "lack of business".

Individuals in the Tory administration have privately said much ofthe key decision making at the council goes on in these meetings,so I'm surprised they have found nothing to talk about at such animportant time.

What's worse is that the administration explained on Twitter thedecision was made in the middle of December - seemingly daysafter the floods hit the coastal areas of our district. What sort ofmessage does this send out to the communities wanting more action on flood defences from both council and the government?

The council will also shortly decide where the axe will fall for thenext round of budget savings - which includes negotiations overour towns CCTV systems - these meetings should be used to give the public an opportunity to have their say before the final decisions are taken.

There is no word on whether allowances will be deducted for thereported shortage of business to deal with.

New Vet CentreOpensNorth Norfolk’s newest Vet Centre has opened inNorth Walsham. Independently owned and operated, buildingwork was recently completed and the Centreopened its doors to its first patients.

Toll Barn Veterinary Centre provides modern pur-pose built premises offering compassionate and knowledgeable veteri-nary care for pets and exotic animals. With its own large car park, themodern premises have been designed to minimise stress on pets by pro-viding separate waiting areas and wards for dogs, cats and exotic pets,

with spacious facilities for pets needing hospitalisation overnight, and asecure outside dog exercise run. A Diagnostic Imaging Suite includingX-Ray and Ultrasound together with in-house laboratory means rapiddiagnosis, and two dedicated operating theatres enable early treatment. The high quality care includes 24/7 emergency service for clients.

VIP Clubs for dogs, cats and rabbits are also available, designed tospread the cost of routine pet healthcare.

Owner Faye Bethell said “Whether you have a fish or Great Dane, anexotic bird or reptile, we realise that pets are family members and weare committed to offering high quality care and treatment options. As an independently operated Centre we aim to offer the same vet or nurse for ongoing consultations and treatments ensuring client-vetcontinuity.”

Faye qualified at the prestigious Royal Veterinary College in London in 2009 and subsequently gained her European GP Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice. Whilst all pets are dealt with at the Centre,Faye has a keen interest in exotic pets and is often found performingdental treatment on rabbits, repairing damaged tortoise shells, treatingconstipated snakes and egg-bound birds, or performing caesareans onmonkeys!

Job cuts puts our coast at risk, argues LabourNorth Norfolk Labour Party has criticised the Government over funding cuts which has led to 1,500 jobsbeing cut from the Environment Agency - weeks after the Prime Minister praised their efforts in North Nor-folk.The organisation, which oversees flood and coast protection, is having to deal with government cuts to theDepartment for the Environment. The local Labour Party believe the move is putting public safety at risk, and have said that more investmentin flood and coastal defences is vital, especially as it is predicted Britain will see more bad weather like waswitnessed at the end of last year. The move came just weeks after MP Norman Lamb and the Prime Minister visited Wells praising the organi-sation and promising to do all they could to help communities affected. The Environment Agency issued nearly 7,000 flood alerts and warnings in 2012-13 – the largest number in itshistory. They are involved in maintaining rivers, deploying sandbags, and giving flooding warnings.Denise Burke, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “Successive govern-ments learned the lessons of the 1953 floods by investing in coastal defences, but that work could be undoneby these cuts. Central government must reconsider its decision to cut funding to the Environment Agency andinvest appropriately in robust emergency responses as well as fund the costly clear- up operations. Local MPswho supported these cuts are putting cost-cutting ahead of public safety and the economy of North Norfolk. We need collective action through central and local government to protect our communities.”

Did you know…Cricket returned to North Walsham during last summer when Bacton Cricket Club relocated to North Walsham High School?

Having problems with the Parish Council at Bacton, club representa-tives had no choice but to ask the High School and the Sports Centre, who came to the rescue and an agreement to use the School and Centre facilities was arrived at.

Club chairman Dave Gale said ‘we have been welcomed by bothschool and sports centre. We now look forward to supplying cricket inthe town for all ages and gender’.

‘We will be holding our AGM soon and we welcome all who wish toplay or serve the club. We are in the progress of applying for grantsthrough the Norfolk Cricket Board and are hoping, with the assistanceof the School, to start coaching sessions for both girls and boys which will hopefully result in being able to register a junior team for competitions’.‘A new youth team captain will be appointed and we are looking for a female coach/coaches to run the girls’ section. The facilities at theSports Centre and at the school are excellent and, with grants, we arehoping to improve them greater. If anyone is interested in joining us please contact the Chairman,Dave Gale, on 01692 650725’.
