In Junior Infants we have been learning all about the Polar Regions. We had so much fun during Aistear playing in our very own igloo. We pretended to be inuits (eskimos) and hunt for fish. We even had our own pond and fishing rods. Some of us made miniature igloos from sugar cubes that proved to be very challenging but great fun. We learnt about penguins and polar bears. We especially loved to learn all about how the baby chick penguin is looked after and cared for by his mummy and daddy. We made inuits with our buddies and learnt a song about the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

It is so lovely to see the first signs of spring and we can't wait for the weather to get warmer. We will be learning all about baby animals in spring soon. We can't believe we are half way through our first year in big school. We have started our own readers and are doing g-g-g-great with all our sounds. We love reading and learning. We also just finished some GAA with Tony from Naomh Barróg and he was very happy with our throwing, catching and kicking. If you see us around the school, give us a wave and say hello we are a really friendly bunch!!!

It is coming into the Spring time and we are very happy about that in Senior Infants. We have been looking out for signs of Spring and noticed that the days are getting longer and flower buds are starting to pop up!

We are singing a new song in Senior Infants called ‘Good Morning’. It welcomes everyone into school, wakes us up (just in case we are still asleep) and puts us in a good mood to start the work day. We are also working really hard on ‘go noodle’ to try and get to the next level. The latest dance we have been practising is ‘Cotton eye Joe’. We have some great dancers in our class!

We are learning about Africa. We found out it is one of the seven continents in the world and it is the hottest. We learnt that Zambia and Egypt are in Africa. We know that life is very different in Africa compared to how we live in Ireland. We made some Ancient Egyptian Jewellery, which we are modelling below. We made the jewellery out of paper plates and toilet rolls. The Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs wore a lot of gold. We wrote our names in Hieroglyphics and we are even signing our name in Hieroglyphics on all of our work..We made some pyramids out of blocks, cardboard and Lego to represent the Ancient Pyramids in Egypt.

One of our favourite animals in Senior Infants at the moment, lives in Africa. It is the Giraffe. We know lots of things about the Giraffe; ◆ They can sleep standing up. They

only sleep for around 30 minutes a full day.

◆ Their eyes are so big, they can nearly see behind them.

◆ A group of Giraffes is called a tower.

◆ They are one of the quietest animals in nature.

◆ They can survive for weeks without water.

We have recently read the book ‘Giraffes can’t dance’. We made a list of the things that we can do and also the things that we can’t do yet but will be able to when we are older for example driving and cooking.

We are looking forward to pancake Tuesday and Valentines Day.We are making valentine cards and are very excited about the cake sale. Tomorrow is Friday, We hope our fairy Alice leaves us a letter.

First class had a busy first term. We have been reading lots of new books and we have been enjoying ‘Buddy Reading’ with our buddies in 4th Class. We are writing our own book reviews and we have already completed two

book review books that we share with our class. We loved singing, dancing and acting in our Winter Presentation. We also love learning to play percussion instruments and we are learning a new song now called the Mango Walk, where we sing, dance and play instruments all at the same time!

We have learnt lots of Gaeilge and our favourite game to play in First Class is the memory game ‘Cluiche Kim’. We have had a lovely time during the ‘Friendship’ and ‘Kindness’ weeks and we are now great at giving compliments!

Learning about different animals’ habitats was great fun. We learnt about birds, hibernating hedgehogs and bats in particular. We have just completed our first projects on ‘Animals of the Antarctic’ and we are enjoying presenting all of our interesting projects to the class.

My Boat Scamander by Dara Nowlan Brady

My family go to the River Shannon every year. We go on a boat called Scamander, which usually stays in a yard in Rooskey, County

Roscommon.First we take out the boat and we decide where to go (it’s usually Dromod). We have to check the engine before we leave. We go to lots of places on the Shannon including Dromod, Lough Key, Jamestown and Carrick On Shannon.

Once, on our way to Tarmonbarry my dog Fiby fell in! She was looking at the sheep and cows in the fields nearby and then... splash! My Dad had to rescue her while my Mom took pictures. When she got out she was VERY wet.

My favourite things to do on the Shannon are to play Bodaborg, go out in the dinghy and to go swimming. I would definitely recommend boating as a holiday.

My holiday in Portugal by Jenna DunneI went to Portugal in August 2015 with my family. We had a lovely room. We went exploring around the beautiful square. We went to a few gift shops. We got some nice souvenirs for my friends and family in the gift shops. There was a huge pool with lots of children playing, diving and eating ice pops. My brother and I were splashing each other in the water.

I was only allowed in the pool when my sun cream was dry. It was always worth the wait. I played in the pool every day.

We went out to dinner every night and tried a different restaurant each time.

One night there was a magic show in the restaurant in the hotel. I ran off without my dad and went in the lift by myself because I knew my mam was down there already. When I came out of the lift and saw that the door to the restaurant was closed I thought it was a different floor. So I went back into the lift and pressed the same button but it didn’t move because I was on the right floor but I didn’t know that at the time. I got very upset because I thought I would be stuck there forever. I was crying so loud my brother heard me from the hotel room and said “Is that Jenna?” Then my dad said “it couldn’t be” But my brother went to the lift and pressed the up button and the lift started going up. He saw me in the corner crying. My dad came running and told me not to run off again. Then we all went down to the magic show together.

That’s me with the magician. I had a great time at the magic show.

My Visit to Povlen MountainBy Loukas Dragojlovic

One day in June, during my visit to Serbia, dad, granny and me, went on a mountain adventure. We went to Povlen mountain.Povlen is a mountain in western Serbia full of greens, oak trees, small rivers and hike roads. We had to travel a short distance by car and then began hiking up the mountain.

I picked up some delicious mountain strawberries on the way. Then we came to a fork in the road. We took one of the paths , but after a lot of walking we found out we went in the wrong direction! We walked back to the fork and took the other path. We found an oak tree and I carved my name, initials and the year of my visit. I left my mark!

We returned home late that afternoon. My legs were aching but I was full of great memories of my trip.I can't wait for my next one!

JKS Karate Olympics

By Keelin MacLoughlin

My sensei (Karate teacher) is the head of JKS Shotokan karate in Ireland. His daughter is working towards going to the Olympics in 2020. This is the first year Karate is in the Olympics. She has to travel to enter competitions and is training really hard. She is really good and I hope she gets in, she deserves to. Sometimes she teaches our classes.

I have been learning Karate since I was 7. I am a half red belt. We train once a week and our Dojo is in Swords. I really enjoy Karate. I plan to keep doing it until I get my Black belt. Karate is good for self-confidence, focus and fitness. My brother does Karate as well; he started when he was 6.

My Grandad’s Fake Leg

by Sadie

My grandad is called Fred. He is 74. He is a builder. He put in the junior and senior classroom windows here in our school. Two years ago at the start of winter he noticed that there was a bad pain in his right foot. So he went to the doctor who told him that the blood was not going into his foot properly because he was working so hard. The doctor said that he would have to amputate his foot if the pain got worse. A year later my grandad had enough of the pain. He went into hospital and had the operation. We visited him as he got better. So the hospital wanted to give him a fake leg and his options were a wooden foot, a bendy rubber foot or a plastic and metal foot. He didn’t choose the wooden one because he was afraid he might get splinters. He was afraid he might bounce everywhere with the rubber foot. So he chose the plastic and metal one which looks like a robot foot to me. One day he came to my house and my mum didn’t see his fake leg before. He pretended that he was falling over and my mum almost fainted. He still works a little bit but he’s in Thailand on his holidays right now. He likes to pretend that he’s a pirate in Thailand. My cousin Ennis calls his fake leg ‘Crazy Dave’.

Puppy Care Guide

By Nessa Maeve Brady

Introduction Hi! My name is Nessa and I have two dogs. One is a little puppy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Lola who is six months old. The other is a Golden Retriever called Casper who is four years old. Casper is fully trained but Lola needs some work (she will not sit unless there is a treat for her).

This is why I decided to do a puppy care guide. Make sure that before you get a dog you are living in a suitable place. Most likely a house with a big back garden for the puppy to play in. Also choose a breed of dog that suits you. Example – If you have a big garden and a nearby park go for a Border Collie or a Bulldog as these breeds need more exercise and more play time. If you have an apartment go for a Pug or a Poodle as they are calmer and do not need as much exercise.

Before you bring your puppy home

Your puppy will need –• The right type of puppy food

and treats!!

• Food and water bowls• A collar and leash

• An identification tag

• A crate (make sure your puppy will fit in it!)

• Puppy shampoo (and conditioner if you would like!)

• A puppy brush

• Small plastic bags• Lots of toys!

Before you bring home your puppy make sure your home is safe. Also if you have big or small children make sure that they know what is safe and what is not for a puppy.

Examples of what is not safe- cleaner paint medicines cigarettes chocolate

You can use baby gates to keep your puppy out of certain rooms.

The first day

NEVER leave your puppy alone in the house on the first day! It is a recipe for disaster!

The ride home from the breeder/shelter can be very scary for a little puppy but you can make it a little easier for them. Sometimes the breeder/shelter will give you a blanket or toy with the mothers scent on it. If so you could put the puppy in its crate with the blanket/toy. Make sure the crate is beside someone who can comfort the puppy. When the puppy is little it should sleep in a crate with soft blankets. For a day or maybe two you should let your puppy get used to the family so try not to invite over to many guests because this could overwhelm the puppy. Start by introducing it to close relatives such as granny’s granddads aunt’s uncles and cousins.

Why Is My Puppy Crying?

(a) It is hungry

(b) It is lonely

(c) It is hurt

(d) It wants attention from you

(e)It is trying to tell you that it wants to go outside

How to teach sit

With your puppy on its leash close to you, show it a treat. Keep it above its head so that it has to to reach up to sniff it. Move it over its head and back towards its tail as you say “*Dogs Name*, sit”. When its head follows the treat, its hips will automatically go down. Remember to give it the treat and praise it enthusiastically when it sits. This will reinforce the sit command. Also remember to teach your dog lie down, stay, come, watch me, heel, wait, stand, go to bed and leave it.

North Bay’s 5th Class @ Primary Science Fair 2018

CalThe BT Young Scientists & Technology Exhibition 2018 took place in the RDS during the second week of January. The exhibition ran for a week and students from all over the country participated with a whopping total of 2,031 projects being submitted. While it is mainly secondary school students who enter projects, primary school students from 4th to 6th are invited to show their Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths projects, also known as STEM as part of the RDS Primary Science Fair.

MiaEach of us had six options to choose from. The Human Eye, The Ames Room, Perspective in Art, optical illusions, Eye Vs Brain and Colour Blindness. I chose optical illusions for my project. We all had about two weeks to do our project.

AidanWe typed a bit on Google docs about eye related topics. After we had finished that we looked at optical illusions and chose which ones we liked best. Afterwards we created series of images on Scratch in a format we used to check for colour blindness. We tested 179 people in our school. Slideshow

TadhgWe learned about how the human eye can be tricked by 3D optical illusions, colour blindness and other things like that. It was a lot of hard work but I definitely think it was worth it.

HannahFor the Ames Room, we measured angles and built mini versions of it. Diagrams of The Human Eye were drawn and a game was created called “Naming the parts of The Human Eye.” On the topic Colour Blindness, we found pictures on Google and made a test using Scratch.

We were divided into groups and designed banners that were displayed at the fair. We also answered questions that were asked by the people and judges there. Our teacher Ciaran, gave us science fair badges during the fair.

JamesThis project was about colour blindness. We tested the whole school for colour blindness which could really help them to understand that they might not be able to do some jobs if they thought they would (like an electrician because they would have to know what colour the cables are). On the day in the R.D.S. the judges came around and thought ours was particularly impressive and well presented. We had lots of fun there, keeping track of the stall and looking around ourselves.

BrianWe brought the test results to the science fair. We also made an Ame’s room replica and brought it to the science fair too. Overall we had a great time and it was a big success.

Matthew BI think the judges liked our project. There were lots of other interesting projects from other schools like “Why can’t I launch my teacher into space?” and “Why is cows milk the most popular?” Overall I enjoyed the trip very much. Slideshow

In November the school got to see the Sam Maguire. Evan Comerford, a Dublin player and Tony, our coach from Naomh Barrog brought in the trophy and the school got a photo with them. There was a lot of blue all around the school. Some classes even made Dublin banners and hats. Evan told us about his school time and when he was a kid playing GAA and what it was like. He told us about what it was like to be a player and he encouraged us to play sports. It was a good day for Northbay!
