Creativeness flourishes even in

lockdown From page 1

“At the studio, I became a ses-

sion musician, playing on a lot of

advertising jingles and countless

demos .

“I wrote a few songs for a come-

dy entourage that was performing

at theatre restaurants and also for

the Scout’s Bag Show Revue and I

was performing original songs in a

contemporary rock band.

“I learned a lot about layering

instruments and tricks to getting a

good mix and that led me to pro-

ducing and engineering a few in-

die albums.”

One of those was an album for

children which Chris co-wrote and

co-produced.

It was released on cassette with

a fully illustrated book including

lyrics.

“About 10 years later, it was re-re-

leased on CD with some additional

material recorded at my home stu-

dio in Rutherglen,” he said.

The move to Rutherglen oc-

curred in 1994, with Chris, his wife

and two children coming to live in

the house his mother was brought

up in.

“My wife and I agreed that the

North East would be a good place

to raise our kids and I could still

continue with my music and pro-

duction,” he said.

When Chris met Oxley singer/

actress/songwriter Linda Simp-

son, he added the monikor of

playwright to his impressive list of

skills.

“Linda had the idea to perform

a set of Sophie Tucker songs and

I was to be Sophie’s piano player,

Ted Shapiro,” he said.

“Sophie Tucker was a famous

Vaudeville Burlesque singer and

comedienne and when Linda told

me about it, I was suddenly in-

spired to write a two act stageplay

with nine songs and 16 characters.

“Thankfully, Linda loved what I’d

come up with and approached the

Wangaratta Players about produc-

ing it.

“The show is set in contempo-

rary times, with the main character

meeting Sophie Tucker which plac-

es Sophie in a modern timeline.

“Sophie off ers to mentor the

troubled young woman and that

results in a delightful blend of

comedy and pathos touching on

all the big topics of sex, love, self-

esteem, lies and the meaning of

life.

“I am so grateful and apprecia-

tive to Linda for inspiring me to

write a musical, and to Wangaratta

Players for producing the show -

whenever that actually happens!”

While Chris isn’t able to perform

his songs in front of live audiences

at the moment, technology has

enabled him to continue working

with other musicians and song-

writers.

“I recently released a single

with one of my songwriting part-

ners from Melbourne and the

whole project was created online

without us meeting in person,” he

said.

“He recorded his parts and sent

them to me so I could record my

parts and mix and master them

ready for release.

“I have also co-written and re-

corded half a dozen songs with

Everton drummer, Rolie Dwyer.

“He had a great idea of texting

one line of a lyric, and then I would

text back the next line until we had

a song.

“I then composed the music

and recorded a demo and sent it

to him to see if he liked it.

“Over the years, I’ve written

songs in so many diff erent ways

- sometimes, the whole song is

written in my mind and then I tran-

scribe it to an instrument, other

times I write music to lyrics, or

combine past musical ideas with

new ones.

“The creating process is what

motivates me. I love seeing an

idea developing into a fi nished

product.”
