Last Time Out

It’s been a long time since the Bears last played a game, coming on November 23, 2019.

The Loooooong Wait

By the time Northern Colorado kicks off the 2021 season, it will have been 650 days since UNC played in an actual football game. The Bears’ last game came against Cal Poly on November 23, 2019. The program opted out of last spring’s Big Sky season making September 3rd head coach Ed McCaffrey’s debut.

McCaffrey was hired on December 12, 2019, making it 631 days on the job before finally being able to coach his team.

The last time in the Northern Colorado football pro-gram’s history they didn’t play a game was 1943 and 1944 during the second World War.

Coaches Debuts

Coach McCaffrey is looking to do something a good amount of previous coaches haven’t done before, win their debut game. Former coaches are 3-10-1 with Joe Glenn being the last headman to pick up the first game W.

Season Openers

Northern Colorado is 42-55-3 in season openers. The Bears are looking to end a current two-game skid to open the year.

Against the Pac 12

UNC is 2-16 against PAC 12 opponents all-time. The Bears have faced, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah and Washington State. Both wins have come against CU.

Family Connection

Not one, not two, but three McCaffrey’s will be on the roster either as a coach or player for Northern Colorado in 2021. Head Coach Ed will have his oldest son Max roaming the sidelines with him as the Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receivers coach. Meanwhile, the third McCaffery son, Dylan will be the Bears field general at quarterback.

No Sophomore slump

Jaren Mitchell started to turn heads in the Big Sky his freshman year. The Carrolton, Texas native set the program’s DI freshman record for yards in a game with 242 against North Dakota State where he also scored twice.

He led the team with 48 receptions and 740 yards overall. Mitchell eclipsed the 70-yards mark four times in 2019.

Agent 0

Jerone Jackson has a new number but is ready to bring the same game he did in 2019. He finished the year with 105 tackles to rank second on the team.

His performance earned him All-Big Sky honorable mentions. Jackson tied former teammate Luke Nelson with 65 solo tackles.

Besides making the big tackles, Jackson broke up three passes had two QB hurries and a forced fumble.

Welcome to the FCS

It’s not about where you play, but how you play. Northern Colorado’s 2021 roster features 17 trans-fers from the FBS ranks. Most will see significant playing time for the Bears.

Denver Broncos Connection

While Head Coach Ed McCaffery is well known for his time in the Blue and Orange, he’s not the only person with connections to the Broncos in the program. Former cornerback Jimmy Spencer is on staff as a volunteer assistant working with the secondary.

Also, first-year Director of Sports Performance Tyler Hill worked for the Broncos for two years.

Dylan McCaffrey is not the only Bear with connec-tions to the Broncos, fellow QB Andrew Brister is the son of Bubby Brister. Also freshman LB Keenan Guthrie is the nephew of recent Hall of Fame induct-ee John Lynch.

New and Improved

A pair of big projects are in progress on the campus of Northern Colorado with the construction of the new Empower Center and installation of turf at Nottingham Field. The Empower Center is a new state-of-the-art weight room for UNC Athletics that was 100% donor-funded. It is set to open at the beginning of the second semester.

Who Are You?

Northern Colorado fans are going to need a roster page during the first game of the season to learn who is who on the roster. The 2021 roster features 65 new faces that were not on the roster at the end of the 2019 season.

2021 Schedule Tidbits The 2021 Big Sky schedule is a rollover of what would have been the 2020 season.

After going 79 years without playing each other, Northern Colorado and Colorado square off for the

second time in four seasons.

The non-conference schedule has a Southland feel to it. The Bears play both Houston Baptist and Lamar out of the Southland. UNC has faced HBU twice with a 2-0 record and it will be the first time facing Lamar.

Academic Success

While Northern Colorado has not been able to pick up wins on the field during the long hiatus, they have been in the classroom. Northern Colorado led the Big Sky with 54 Academic All-Big Sky members for the 2020-21 school year.

Earning their Degrees

Northern Colorado has 24 student-athletes on their roster that have already earned their Bachelor’s degree, tied with Townson for the most in the FCS.

Around the Big Sky

COVID 19 brought about a different look to the 2020 season pushing the season to the Spring of 2021. Five teams did not play in the spring 2021 season in UNC, Portland State, Montana, Montana State and Sacramento State. Two teams made the FCS playoffs in Weber State and Eastern Washing-ton.

The UNC Coaches Show is back again for the 2021 season with a new location. Catch the Voice of the Bears, Jerry Schemmel alongside Coach McCaffery and others from UNC Athletics every Tuesday from 6-7 at The GOAT Sports Bar starting August 31.

What’s Ahead

The Bears are on the road again next week with a trip to Houston to face Houston Baptist. Northern Colorado’s first home game is September 18 against Lamar at 2 pm.

Overtime History

Since the NCAA instituted its current overtime rule in 1996, UNC is 4-3 (.571) overall in overtime games.

The McCaffrey Files EdEd

MMccCaffreyCaffreyHead Coach • First Season at UNC and Overall

Ed McCaffrey was named the 16th head coach in Northern Colorado football history on December 12, 2019.  The three-time Super Bowl champion came to UNC from Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado where he was the head coach for two seasons.  While at Valor Christian, McCaffrey led the Eagles to a 24-2 record winning the 5A state title in 2018 before making it to the quarterfinals in 2019. McCaffrey played in the NFL for 13 seasons for the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. He was on the Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII winning teams for the Broncos and Super Bowl XXIX with San Francisco. His best season as a pro came in 1998. He helped Denver win its second straight Super Bowl and he earned second team All-Pro recognition while being named to the Pro Bowl. In that year he made 64 receptions for 1,053 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.  He played his college ball at Stanford from 1987-90 under famous head coaches Jack Elway and Dennis Green. McCaffrey was a first team All-American and first team All-Pac 10 selection at wide receiver in his senior season. The New York Giants selected McCaffrey in the third round, 83rd pick overall, of the 1991 NFL Draft.  Upon retirement from the NFL, McCaffrey put work into his McCaffrey Family Foundation alongside his wife Lisa to assist children whose medical situation has created an academic or financial hardship. In 2012 he became the color analyst for the Denver Broncos flagship station 850 KOA. He called games for five years before stepping down to become the head coach at Valor Christian High School in 2017. He and Lisa, a former standout soccer player herself at Stanford, have four sons Max, Christian, Dylan and Luke. All four have gone on to play football like their dad. Christian was an All-American running back at Stanford, finishing as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 2015. He’s now an All-Pro running back for the Carolina Panthers. Max attended Duke University as a wide receiver and played in the NFL. He is currently on the Northern Colorado football staff as the Wide Receivers Coach. Dylan and Luke are still in college both playing quarterback at Northern Colorado and Rice, respectively.

Nottingham Field

Named for Northern Colorado Hall of Famer Vic Nottingham, who played tennis for the Bears from 1948-52 and has been an invalu-able contributor to the program, Nottingham Field opened its doors on Sept. 9, 1995.

The stadium’s first game pitted Northern Colorado against Colorado Mesa and the Bears were most ungracious hosts, handing the Mavericks a 58-7 defeat.

The Bears went on to win their first 13 games at Nottingham and enter 2019 with a 76-54 record at home since moving over from Jackson Field.

In the last several years Northern Colorado has made several renovations to the stadium.

The facility saw an across-the-board facelift in spring 2007 that included upgraded concessions, new restrooms and ticket booths. The East Plaza Concourse is now the hub of activity on game day.

Then, in summer 2011, the High Plains Club on the west side of the stadium saw an upgrade. A VIP donor lounge was created, complete with a built-in bar, ample seating, new carpet and a pair of high-definition flat-screen TVs.

The 2012 season brought a new sound system to Nottingham Field, resulting in crisper gameday music and public-address system. Over the 2013 summer, the track surrounding the field was resurfaced and several amenities were added to the terraces.

The summer of 2014 brought in a brand-new Daktronics video board to enhance the game-day experience, and 2015 brought in a video replay room and wind screens.

2018 saw the interior of Nottingham get a facelift with new graphics in the High Plains Room and the second level terrace lobby. The graphics were put in place to instill the rich history and tradition of success of the football program.

Prior to the 2021 season, Nottingham went from a natural grass surface to artificial turf thanks to the donation of an unanimous donor.
