Conference Speakers & Chairmen
Patrick McLaughlin Conference Chair
Patrick joined Devenish as CEO in September 2012 and has led the building of the Devenish brand by organic growth, through acquisitions and the opening of a new premix plant in Widnes. Working with the commercial and R&D teams developing new products Patrick has grown Devenish market share. Patrick is a board member of the NI Grain Trade Association and of the Institute of Global Food Security. Prior to joining Devenish Patrick was a director of Westland Horticulture.
Noel Lavery Noel is a chartered accountant and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He worked for ten years with Lamont Holdings Plc becoming Group Accountant. Following four years with the IDB Noel joined the Civil Service in 2001 and became Finance Director to the Department of Enterprise Trade & Investment becoming Deputy Secretary in 2003. Noel joined the Office of the First & Deputy First Minister in 2009. He was appointed Permanent Secretary in DARDNI in 2013.
MORNING SESSION
James Ryan Chair Morning Session
James is Managing Director of Hy-Line Ireland based in Co. Cork. His career started with Ballyfree Eggs building a breadth and depth of poultry experience with Cartons before coming MD of Hy-Line Ireland in 1998. The company supplies day old and point of lay pullets primarily to the Irish and N. Ireland markets. James is a long time supporter of the Poultry Industry Education Trust contributing to student scholarships and travel bursaries through sponsorship of PIET Conferences over many years.
Randy C. Borg As director of European Genetics, Cobb Vantress Inc., Randy directs Cobb’s European research activities, the commercial breeding programme and external research projects as well providing R&D support to Cobb’s European business. Prior to his present position Randy was the company’s senior Quantitative Geneticist and before that the company’s Pedigree Farms Geneticist. Randy Joined Cobb from Pfizer Animal Health in 2008. He has held research posts in Virginia Tech and Montana State University. He holds a PhD degree.
Stephen Turner
Stephen qualified NDP at West of Scotland College before joining the family commercial laying, feed mill and retailing business. Over 30 years ago, he joined ISA, a Hendrix Genetics Company at
Peterborough and Joice & Hill Poultry the operating company in the UK. Stephen became Technical Director in 2012 responsible for product quality and technical support overseeing UK breeding farms and the Peterborough hatchery. He is Chair of the Pullet Hatcheries Association and a member of several other poultry industry groups and committees.
Eugene Philhower
Eugene is Northern Europe Consultant to the US Soybean Export Council. He is a highly experienced agricultural specialist having spent 30 years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most recently as Counsellor in the London Embassy. He has a wealth of experience and is an excellent speaker and will cover sustainability issues particularly Sustainability Assurance from a practical point of view.
AFTERNOON SESSION
Keiron Forbes Session Chair
Keiron is Technical Director Agri-research (Ireland) Ltd with a focus on nutrition and has 30 years experience in the poultry industry. Prior to this Keiron worked with Colborn Dawes, Moy Park, and Ross Breeders and spent 5 years in the Congo. He returned to N. Ireland in 1994 joining J. Bibby & Sons and later Nutrition Services Ltd., before joining Agri-research (Ireland) Ltd. He graduated in Agriculture from QUB.
David Heckman
David is Global Marketing Consultant for Elanco Animal Health working with Elanco customers involving travel to 50+ countries world wide. His focus is on global poultry production. David holds an MBA degree from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, a liberal arts degree and a BSc degree in Animal Science and Genetics. Prior to joining Elanco in 1992, David worked as a genetics consultant in the dairy industry. David enjoys music, plays instruments and is associated with the Symphony Orchestra in Indianapolis where he lives.
David Trimble
David is the Renewable Energy Technologist CAFRE. David began his career lecturing at Greenmount before moving to the Fatstock Division for six years. Following a career break of several years spent in Hungary he returned to Greenmount in 2003 joining the DARD Renewable Energy team in 2008 tasked with responsibility for implementing CAFRE’s renewable energy strategy. He is now involved with delivering renewable energy training and workshops on energy efficiency and the range of renewable energy technologies. He is also involved with the delivery of DARD Renewable Energy Action Plan.
